    it took me several cups of tea, over several hours to fit the skew gear, so well done!

    I had one of these engines in my series 3 109 station wagon. I then discovered Land Rovers Ultra reliable engine, the 186 Holden. Life was simple after that :)

    The timing Cam wheel on the end of the cam shaft has a number of splines that allows for fine advance or retarding by a few minutes.. I'm hoping this may allow This might allow 20 degrees to be obtained bang on, if the pump drive is still out.... I see you have the 3 bearing 2.25. The 5 bearing 2.25 has a slightly altered Skew gear design, with one piece bronze bush and a thrust washer. Nice to see it being done...

    Cheers mate! Nicely explained 🔥. Little question. Does the flywheel has just one position on the crankshaft? Had someone paid to make a paint job and the shithead mounted the engine with the timing completely wrong (I even printed him the workshop manual). I think the EP mark is all lost and it doesn't indicate the right position. I'm trying really hard not to take the engine off the landy because I don't have the proper tooling, but I can't make the exhaust valve close completely while the EP mark is on the indicator. Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  2 года назад +1

      Hi, the flywheel can only be fitted in one position there's a locating pin that lines it up.
      The EP mark indicates when the exhaust valve is fully open not closed.
      Best of luck and thanks for watching. 🙂👍

    Hi mate. I am just about to replace my chain and sprockets but the new cam sprocket I have only has one keyway and I can't find a multi keyway version new anywhere. Would you reccomend using the old sprockets if they are not too worn with a new chain or would you say use the new sprockets too even though there is only a single keyway?
    Many thanks, for the video!

    super video, i've been following all your videos of this build, and am at this same point in my rebuild.. i see you really need the flywheel on to do this job and i'm trying to decide if i should install the engine with flywheel in the landy and then do this timing, or do it on the floor, as you obvs cant do this on an engine stand.. whats that frame you have there? is the engine bolted down, or just lucky it fits?

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  3 года назад +1

      Thanks🙂 the frame is a trolly for moving pool tables luckily the engine sits on it perfect if I didn't have it I would bolt it to the chassis it'll make things loads easier.

    Hello csm good video cheers timing a 2.25 diesel would I be looking for the middle of the flat spot off the cam or the highest peak book vary Haynes manual says bring cam to high est peak and put the chain on .lr
    book says middle of the flat spot so I set it at this but I would say it was lagging at this setting head scratch no sure

      @retro.restorations  Год назад

      Hi, thanks for watching!
      The middle of the flat spot is best if you've got running issues with it in the middle then you could also have other problems like a worn cam, injectors, fuel pump or fuel pump adjustment. 🙂👍

    just blue a hed gasket on my 1978 series 3 have a spare engine from a 2a stripped down at the moment going to do it up and then swap it over i know its a 3 bearing compared to my 5 bearing any ideas.thanks.

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  3 месяца назад

      A 78 series 3 would of originally come with a 3 bearing engine, and to be honest, unless you're thrashing it off road it won't be a problem, land rover and rover were using the 3 bearing crank for nearly 40 years without major issues unless driven really hard. Why not replace the gasket on the other engine? 🙂👍

    When lining the skew gear up, do you turn the engine to top dead centre on the compression stroke (cylinder 1) then rotate again to the degree marks

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  3 года назад

      The skew gear goes in at 13 degrees before top dead centre on cylinder one making sure its on the compression stroke its easy to get 180 degrees out on the wrong stroke 👍

      @@retro.restorations Thanks so much. we have battled the overhauled 2 1/4 diesel, and it's winning. I feel the distributor pump may be 180 degrees out of time. Engine turns over, but it will not produce power/accelerate.

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  3 года назад +1

      No worries 👍
      It is easy to get it 180 out you need to make sure the piston is on its compression stroke when setting the pump and that the flywheel is set at 13 degrees before tdc if thats all correct the master splin on the skew gear will be roughly facing 4 o'clock when lining the pump the outlet to No1 cylinder will be in line with the master splin +or- a couple of millimetres.
      I hope all the makes sense.

      We have the engine running. We are experiencing extreme amounts of white smoke. We are going to pull the distributor pump and verify the drive gear of the pump is properly aligned. AGAIN! We are experiencing what we think is pre-detonation.

    poor engines these, they eat timing chains they had them in the black cabs in the 60s but soon took them out and replaced them with the bmc diesel engines.

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations  2 года назад

      If maintained properly they can be very reliable one problem is when people change the timing chain they ignore the warn sprockets causing chain failure. Regular and thorough maintenance is the key. 🙂👍
