I feel so lucky! I have a straight back GSD, who has always been low energy. When he was younger he'd go from sleeping to being ready for a walk in a heartbeat. He's always been low maintenance around the house.

Great dogs. My neighbour had one when we were kids and it was the sweetest thing - but man, once, we were having a party in their house, and there was a bit of trouble... that sweet dog became the most ferocious beast protecting us! My German Shepherd is the best and nicest dog I've ever had in my life. She loves everyone she comes across and is friendly to other dogs, cats and livestock but her motor is non stop. I can't get her to come inside and relax with me hardly at all, she will pace the house looking out the windows and want right back out. I would like her to relax a bit but maybe that will come later in her life since she is only 3 years old now.

Yes I had a GS that had hip problems since she was a pup. Drs told me the best that I could do is put her down. She lived to be 12. I hate seeing the sloop back. On your video, at the beginning I was excited to see the back standing straight up and not slop.

I've had both working and show lines of this breed. The working lines are often just too much dog for the average person. The show lines are a lot of dog too, but most people can handle a well-bred one. The show ones in the AKC have had much stronger selection for herding instincts, so they are not useless dogs. People get way too worked up about the rear and gait in these dogs, often (incorrectly) linking them to hip dysplasia. I have a young dog right now that is out of AKC champion lines, both OFA excellent parents, and he has 7 points toward his AKC championship. He is being trained in herding right now. He loves kids and is super obedient, and he will be used at stud if he passes all his health testing. He is great with other dogs. I don't think you could turn him into a protection dog, but he does have strong herding instinct and is very intelligent and biddable. If you want to look him up online, he's Hammersmith Can I Kick It (named Quest, I hope you get the reference if you're old enough).
I would recommend anyone wanting a German Shepherd to get a working line dog, mostly for health reasons. I would also suggest that you properly socialize and exercise your them. Because if you do they can be amazing

GSD is best for what you want, get a working line GSD, take a look at the different lines out there, DDR, West German and Czech lines. Get one with a health guarantee and wait to hike with your dog till an age suited for such activates. Good luck!
As always great videos. I would like to see you do a video on the Chesapeake bay retriever. They say they make excellent guard dogs as well as family and hunting dogs.
I wanna back you up on your comment about the choice between a malinois and a shepherd being a lifestyle dependent one. A few things, I have owned a bunch of shepherds and my family has bred them in the past (my grandmother had an exchange program with American and Euro shepherds to attempt to get the American raised shepherd mass and strength with the Euro endurance, tenacity, agility and temperament. These were serious dogs but all of them were dogs that a family could live with. The mals I know of we're lovely dogs but are extremely needy. They NEED to be worked or they will become aggressive or destructive. Their energy is limitless. The last one I met was in a house with two Navy seals and one of their wives and someone was always home, she went to the park for hours a day and was a well cared for dog, but eventually the dog was sent away to work on the farm of one of the Seal's parents because even with a minimum of 2 hours a day of hard excercise, she was destructive. They are serious dogs for serious dog people. Shepherds can gaurd a house well and discourage intrusion, but don't NEED to get run into the ground just to sleep at night rather than eat your sofa. Shepherds are a nice mix of family dog and working dog and guard dog, even if you can only work them 45 minutes a day. They are one of the best balanced breeds you will find. On the flip side, now that leyla the malinois works a ranch, she is the best dog and she gets 4 or 5 hours a day worth of running in and when she comes home sleepy she is amazing with the family. It depends on how much time you can put it on a daily basis with the dog.
Show line GSDs are gonna have dropped hips vs workline shepherds which are gonna have the straight back and their hips aren't as dropped. Showline GSDs tend to have more hip problems the bigger and older they are.
I have an Australian Stumpy tail cattle dog. Almost every time I take him to the dog park the German Shepherds chase him all over the place and only the German Shepherds I don't know why that is.
Even with a back yard there should be added stimulus, playing fetch or obstacle course etc, obedience training. You have to engage there mind as well as there body's. Then you have a happy, healthy well rounded dog.
Hi Zeke, looking at your great videos I have noticed that many breeds in the US looks different then here in Europe, like german shepard, cane corso, rottweiler, doberman (difference in size, coat, head shape, body shape).. do you have an explanation?
Intro was awesome, I liked the facts about my favourite breed The only thing new to me in the video is I didn't know that the GSD comes in blue and liver colors. I am Somesh of India
How about doing a video on the swiss shepherd. They're sooo pretty and great family dogs. More mellow then the German shepherd. They're also pretty rare in the u.s.
Standard Colors for the GSD include black and tan, black and red, bi Color, and black. Anything else is a DQ in the show ring and most oftenly cause health issues bc they're bred by irrisponsible breeders. Working lines are no healthier than show lines when bred correctly. American lines tend to get a lot of backlash bc of the less regulated breeding standards here.
There is no getting away from it but what I can say is if you do it about an hour or so every few days outside, it saves a lot of the muss and fuss. My dog Hobbes sheds like a machine even for a shepherd but I play fetch with him outside and broadside him with a come while we do it and if you do it outside even my old lady who is allergic to non hypoallergenic dogs can have him lay in her lap, sleep with her, etc. And not feel lowsy
Tray Muse I think that’s where preference comes into play. I give my boxer all the attention and time in the world but I got a boxer specifically because it’s a short coat and very little shedding
VIK TECH yes, just like human foods there are fillers in dog food and cat so on and so on. I feed my German Shepherd puppy a holistic diet and raw. Also, start your pup on cod liver oil, look on Amazon, you can get it for dogs. After your pup gets over a year old start adding some cosequin. It helps with their joints over time. Another good pointer is don't let your puppy jump down from higher up places. It can damage their hips later down the road. 🙂
Anal frunculosis is the only reason that I'd never get another shepherd, I honestly love the breed so much and think they are the most incredible, intelligent and loyal breeds but my gsd died of anal frunculosis and unfortunately its an illness hard for breeders to detect in their lines and super common in gsd but not often talked about :(
A 200 pound man (average robber size) broke into my house and my 75 pound GSD couldnt handle him and got injured. I now go for larger dogs such as Rottweilers. They can easily take down 300+ men
It's not BS. A man that has the mentality to fight a dog can easily beat a dog under 100lbs or if it has a lot of scruff to grab on to. There's a video online of some asian guys pitting a GSD against a overweight guy. The guy grabbed the dog easily and controlled it the rest of the fight. He could have easily chocked the dog if he wanted to. Personally, the GSD is one of my top 5 breeds but they are more of a personal protection dog then a guard dog of property. Either way, it's always best to own more than one dog if want your property protected to the max. Also, i don't support animal cruelty and i hated it in my guts to watch the video. But there's truth to what the above comment says about some people having the ability to injure a protection dog.
@@jameswolf4894 true, but then again, the temperament and training plays a major role, and each dog, whatever breed it may be is different. Size doesn't matter when it comes to it's temperament. Mal's are the finest examples
My German shepherd is a show line and she is such a goofball but when she needs to get protective she'll let no one near my family but she is decent around strangers she behaves well but dosent trust them
Hi, I am just curious to know that German shepherd are third most intelligent dog breed where as Belgian Malinois ranks 26. Even then why now a days police and military prefer Belgian Malinois over GSD.

Are there any noticeable physical differences between the show and working line, or are differences limited to temperament ?

Curious you mentioned the colors liver and blue but I didn’t think those colors were part of the AKC standard
My half brother Ben and his family have a male black and tan
Short haired
German Shepherd
nice videos. still waiting for Labrador ret videos though. :)

How about doing a video on the swiss shepherd. They're sooo pretty and great family dogs. More mellow then the German shepherd. They're also pretty rare in the u.s.
Can I get a source on the different coat lengths?
And you said long coat German Shepherds don't have an undercoat?
Could you do a more in depth dogumentary on American Great Danes?
Hi!
Could you make a couple videos about Amstaffs?
All about living with an amstaff*
Can you make a video on greyhounds?! Thanks 🙏
Sable is a DQ ?
Your next video should be on the white german shepherd?
Gsd is loving
I really want a German shepherd but that dang shedding is a major con for me
The amount of attention you HAVE to give them DAILY should be the biggest con.
Tray Muse nah maybe they can give them all the attention in the world. It’s fair to say the shedding is the biggest con for them
There is no getting away from it but what I can say is if you do it about an hour or so every few days outside, it saves a lot of the muss and fuss.
@@agentmartagentmart9122 if they can give them all the "time in the world", they can groom them properly.
Tray Muse I think that’s where preference comes into play. I give my boxer all the attention and time in the world but I got a boxer specifically because it’s a short coat and very little shedding
Our shepherd lived for 15 yrs never heard a shepherd lived for 9 yrs it’s all because of dog food
What do you mean exactly....Does Dog food is slow poison to dogs....I also have 4 month old German shepherd...That's why i'm jst curious to know
VIK TECH yes, just like human foods there are fillers in dog food and cat so on and so on. 🙂
My pup looks EXACTLY like the one at 3:28
Like this if you love German shepherds 😍🤩
Anal frunculosis is the only reason that I'd never get another shepherd, I honestly love the breed so much and think they are the most incredible, intelligent and loyal breeds but my gsd died of anal frunculosis and unfortunately its an illness hard for breeders to detect in their lines and super common in gsd but not often talked about :(
A 200 pound man (average robber size) broke into my house and my 75 pound GSD couldnt handle him and got injured. I now go for larger dogs such as Rottweilers. They can easily take down 300+ men
TYLER1_PLAY_VARIETY what training did the dog have? I call bs on this
It's not BS.
Agreed to an extant on a dog's temperament but size does play it's fair share in real life encounter.
Please do more Akita videos
My German shepherd is a show line and she is such a goofball but when she needs to get protective she'll let no one near my family but she is decent around strangers she behaves well but dosent trust them
Raul ?? German Shepherd's are the best all around!
Make video on all about st benard
Love the video but it was a little too quick in my humble opinion. Great work none-the-less!
Hi,
I am just curious to know that German shepherd are third most intelligent dog breed where as Belgian Malinois ranks 26. Even then why now a days police and military prefer Belgian Malinois over GSD.
💖❤️
We are still looking for a breeder that has that 60 pound Males working line that can be a good new family member
