In 2010 I bought a 2003 3.0 litre car, for only £2,600, and it was absolutely wonderful! Very quick when engine revved hard, as it had 240bhp. Thanks for the video review, very interesting. Looks are always in the eyes of the beholder, but I agree with you that S-types look better now than they used to when new.

great lively commentary, big ups. I absolutely must draw your attention to the one thing that everyone says about the engine though...its being 'Ford-sourced' etcetc. The V6 was originally a Porsche design; the ladder block, as per the 928's V8. The Duratec V6 is - apart from the angelic Busso - one of the best sounding V6’s out there. I’ve always like the S-Type, I understand that people won’t like the quirky looks but that’s an appeal for me lol. Great review of a lovely car Matt!

Such a beautiful design! Love the x-tipe, the Rover 75 and the Mini-Cooper too. Those British car designs are my favorits! If I had enough money, I would revive all those cars mentioned exactly as they have been designed in the 90es, with new technique and thus interior. Cheers to these great British designers!
I purchased my 2008 Jaguar Type S from an estate sale in 2020 for $7 K that had 24 K actual miles. It had belonged to a US Marine and I suspect was placed in storage for extended periods of time. The car was pristine both inside and out. It basically is a brand new car for seven thousand $.. I love this car…
I have got to say Matt i was glued to the screen on that one, iv been contemplating getting a S Type for a while and after watching your review im definitely going to bite the bullet as they say. Iv got a 2020 Seat Alhambra xcellence for the family and a V6 Golf for me but there is something about the S Type that makes me think Mmmm i like that!!! I would like a auto 3 litre i think? Something a bit bigger and a more comfortable, like an S Type lol....🙂👍
Having had 3 I know a thing or two about them. I have a 2.7 version at the moment (Diesel, 2005). Check Sills as they rot like crazy under the sills, cam belts, and Gearbox service which a lot of owners miss. Its not a sealed box so factor in 4-500 quid if there is no history of gearbox being serviced. Make sure you have a GOOD battery on them, otherwise the electrics go haywire! The EPB will stick on etc.
I've just picked up a 2001 with 68k miles fully specced 3.0 manual sport V6 1500quid amazing cars for the money sleek looks most the modern shit you want plenty of power go for it
Great review, I had two of these, the 2.5 with an interesting fabric upholstery, was lovely. Later on I had the 2.7D, but I found that less reliable, coolant leak issues. I still miss them, especially the 2.5, a big cat with a real sense of occasion.
The X202 S-Type, released for 2002 , was heavily reengineered from the Ford DEW platform and has virtually nothing interchangable with the Lincoln LS - although many parts are shared with most other contemporary Jaguars e.g. suspension control arms introduced on S-Type were shared by X350 XJ and X150 XK models. This means that the 2002-onwards S-Type feels (and indeed fundamentally is) nothing like the Lincoln LS. It's just an evolutionary artifact used to criticise the S-Type by people who have never driven an X202. The X202 is a wonderfully balanced chassis and is very capable. Indeed it's still the underpinnings of the spectacularly capable XFR-S - which I also owned. The only dynamic advantage the E39 BMW 5 series had over the S-Type R was the option of a manual gearbox. Even then not everyone would agree that was an advantage in an executive performance saloon. Interior wise, you may enjoy the S-Type's leather e.g. on the back of the front seats so the rear passengers see leather rather than plastic seatbacks like the 5-series had resembling, which looks more Mk.4 Ford Escort than it does luxury saloon.
I think e39 had limited slip that STR didn't have. Also m5 suspension was stiffer as it was faster around track. I however think s type is superior to bmw on road comfort / performance and also reliability is suprsingly superior on my s type vs my bmw e92 coupe that broke too often.
The facelift versions were a significant improvement and very good and under estimated cars, I say this as I'm in the fortunate position in that I've driven every version produced. When the Diesel was launched many existing owners and prospective customers couldn't believe it was a diesel as it was that good.
A great review of the car that got me my job at Jaguar! Although I would not have worked on that car as I was working on XJ B.I.W. by then. I would love to have a Jaguar S Type one day.......
Stunning - absolutely stunning! I always loved these cars, and still think they are very elegant cars. This is example is the best I have seen for years 👍🇬🇧
A friend of mine, a most gentlemanly gentleman owns one. When I mention his Jaaag, I see a wicked glint in his eyes, he takes on a kind of persona, silver haired "Terry-Thomas & Leslie Phillips" oh rather !
Back when he was advertising Halifax Liquid Gold Saving Accounts, I think they were 10% + interest rate. Truly a nice little earner in today's climate 🤣
The DEW platform was the start for the S197 Mustang. Not much of the DEW was left but when I took the plastic panel to check my fuel pump on my 2005 Mustang the lid had a Leaper embossed on it. 😂😂
Great review of a car I have always loved. Personally, I would go for the V8 pre facelift. I would never buy a car with an electric parking brake. The styling has always been a strong suit if the S-Type. So elegant yet strong elements that bring it to life. As an aside, the rear side marker lights would be red on a North American example.
The earlier models dash and rear lights take styling cues from the Spitfire. The round bits in the rear lights match the RAF circle on the Spitfire and the dashboard vents are designed to look like the Spitfire wings. It's because the car was made at the Castle Bromwich aircraft factory where the Spitfire was made. I think you got a commemorative book with the first ones sold.
Just joined the Jaguar club . 2000 S Type...3.0....please do a video on these..include what to look for as problems...haven't put it on a lift..got a great price...love it so far..steering wheel super touchy...??? Clunky noise on n off...grease job ..shocks... Low on $$ thanks to Pandemic...but engine looks clean and looks well serviced...1st time I bought a car with no service records..checked vin# no recalls or problems cited... Mirrors and wiper fluid..doesn't work..fuses seem like some missing. The inside head covering..coming undone in a few spaces .moonroof works...windows work .fob works..radio not bad. Works...I really do love it...just petrified of repair costs although all cars are costly now for repairs..not much more... So...can you help...do a video...with concerns..thx
Although the front looked a bit odd I was a big fan of this car when it came out and bought a 1:18 scale Maisto model of it which I still have in this very colour, I think it still looks particularly good from the rear three quarter view. Such a pristine example it's hard to believe how old it is.
I have an 07 plate X type and i have to tell you ,to me X type and S type and just simply stunningly beautiful cars, no matter what others say. On top of that collaboration with Ford made parts cheaper and more available. Whats not to love!
I was fortunate to own a 2004 4.2 (naturally aspirated) S Type for the past four years (sadly, redundancy, lockdown, etc, meant it had to go about two months ago). It was a wonderful car, the best car I've ever owned (yes, better than its Merc C, E Class amd ML predecessors, good as they were). The V8 performance was outstanding and I never felt any regret for not buying the supercharged 'R' model. It was exceptionally comfortable and wafted along like nothing I've ever had before, and with the added enjoyment of being able to lift up its skirts and with its 6.3 seconds to 60mph, leave lesser machines (like BMWs!) in the dust. Rust can be a problem but I bought carefully and maintained well. I'd have another in a heartbeat if and when the world returns to normal.
It could be argued that since Jaguar (the feline) is native to North America, that the US pronunciation is correct. But of course, Jaguar Cars was founded in the UK, so the English pronunciation is also correct (if you know what I mean).
Regarding that retro look being cool these days, its true. My 2000 Merc e-class (when it's shined up) really gets looks. The car you're driving has much the same style as mine. I'm hooked on the 4 round light front end style.
Certainly one of my top 5 designs ever. And contrary to what was said in the video, I had that feeling from day 1 after its launch. Sadly it is beyond my budget to fill up insure and maintain.
Correction on 0-60. If it’s not the 2.5 petrol V6. In real life they do 0-100 kmh in about 7 seconds tested and 7,9 in the brochure. 0-60 is 7.5 on the 2003 auto 3.0 according to Jaguar. Probably around 6,6-6,7 0-60 real world testing. They were not far off in terms of 0-60 compared to the 4.0.
Hello, I've bought myself an old S-Type like the one in the video. At 18:22 in the video I noticed that the car makes a noise when downshifting. Mine does the same thing. Is this a problem with the S-Type and is there a solution for it?
I may be a philistine but I pull any dealer sticker off the rear window - or anywhere else for that matter. I don't buy a car to be an advertising board for the dealer for free
I got a beautiful facelift example fully loaded 6 speed auto (believe it or not completely rot free including sills) for the princely sum of £300 for my elderly father as my work colleague went and bought a new Jaguar and they offered him nothing on a trade in and he said the first person with £300 could have the big cat. Ours was completely reliable but it did get the odd error code due to only getting used once a week to go to the shops as once the battery gets a bit low it can throw the odd engine management light but wish he never sold it as it was a great waft wagon.
I once thought of getting one of these, I am old enough to have had the original, but didn’t really want a Jag shaped Mondeo. Currently have an XJ351 V6 Portfolio. Despite moans from those who don’t like the departure from’classic XJ’ I can’t help but say that the 351 is a beautifully sculptured car. How many speakers? 20 actually. no slouch either - 298bhp, I can’t really find anything (apart from the large touch screen and on or two switches), find any plastic. It is all walnut wood and leather finish - even the roof lining is suede. Jaguar? You can’t mistake it for anything else. Saab? Yes I had a Saab 2.3 litre 9000 in 1993 - I can vouch for your comment regarding those, miles ahead of anything BMW or Mercedes back then.
It looks like new and still is an impressive car. Nevertheless, the design was not so successful as Rover 75 and despite the obvious differences in value, a perfect 75 has more british legacy.
The 3.0 with the 5 speed auto is pretty damn quick tbh. I'm looking at getting one with just 48k. Keep an eye out for rotting sills and rear subframe as things can get expensive. If you have a good un then zeibart the underside to keep things corrsion free. Expect about 19-26 mpg sometimes more on a good run.

@@paulpalmtree9295 Thank you very mutch Paul. Hope we can enjoy these fine british classic Jaguar cars for many years in the future. Also normale Verschleißteile.
The Duratec V6 is - apart from the angelic Busso - one of the best sounding V6’s out there. I’ve always like the S-Type, I understand that people won’t like the quirky looks but that’s an appeal for me lol. Great review of a lovely car Matt!
It does have a great sound, almost as good as a V8! The looks have certainly mellowed over the years
the mercedes m112 sounds excellent in a clk320
I have the 3 litre. The sweet spot in the range in my opinion. Significantly better performance than the 2.5 with hardly any difference in economy.
I really need to color match my fenders like that. I have the leaper but no badge on the grille like that.
the sport model does have stiffer ride but still comfortable i have 3.0 sport it is the most comfortable and reliable car i have ever owned and the s type still gets looked at when you driving . great video as always
Lovely car. I think it must be the quietest (non-elec) car you've ever reviewed Matt. Silky smooth. Love it. Thanks
Till you stick your boot in with J3 or J4 engaged and the purr changes to a big-cat snarl; lovely!
You should have a look at this one, its low miles, loaded and perfect history
It looks perfect Matt the only problem I have is its a bit far to travel to look at a car, I'm based in Gloucestershire!!!
Hi check behind those plastic cill covers,
Having had 3 I know a thing or two about them.
I've just picked up a 2001 with 68k miles fully specced 3.0 manual sport V6 1500quid amazing cars for the money sleek looks most the modern shit you want plenty of power go for it
Exceptionally nice example all the better for its Ford components. Definitely a design that has improved with age.
"Having the growler on the front" ... I always find it less perturbing if it is.
Always had a soft spot for these.
There is of course a third type of person that some have in mind when Jaguar is mentioned. That is Arthur Dayley.
Back when he was advertising Halifax Liquid Gold Saving Accounts, I think they were 10% + interest rate. Truly a nice little earner in today's climate 🤣
Yep a old jag also means Arthur Daley to me
Loving the content lately, and also the amount of it. Please do keep it coming 👍
I love the leaper. I plan on adding a leaper to my XE at some point in to the future.
The DEW platform was the start for the S197 Mustang. Not much of the DEW was left but when I took the plastic panel to check my fuel pump on my 2005 Mustang the lid had a Leaper embossed on it. 😂😂
I would say........ 1999 version is Iconic for S-Type Jaguar 🐆!
Yesssssss 🐆I have a white 99, live my white Queen
A beautiful very underrated car I always wanted one but never got round to getting one, again thank you for this video keep up the good work
Oh and the door speakers are MK3 Mondeo 6x8 ones unless you got the Alpine upgrade so not that flash!
As I understand it, the electric parking brake in the S was very prone to failure. And surprisingly expensive to fix.
This very nice Jaguar S Type, has now been sold.
I was in USA in the late 90s and Americans called a Jaguar a JAGWAAAR
They do. And yes the w sounds like a native Indian word.
Would love a manual one of these…
Me too...I have a 1999 auto at the moment...
That's a jolly good motorcar, sir Richardson! 😁👍
Rather pleasant!
Great review! I do still fancy having a S Type as a daily.
I have one love it only 16k miles on it
Wow, at just £8,450 the Jaguar represents terrific value for the money.
Wood and leather equals luxury
Although the front looked a bit odd I was a big fan of this car when it came out and bought a 1:18 scale Maisto model of it which I still have in this very colour, I think it still looks particularly good from the rear three quarter view. Such a pristine example it's hard to believe how old it is.
I have an 07 plate X type and i have to tell you ,to me X type and S type and just simply stunningly beautiful cars, no matter what others say. On top of that collaboration with Ford made parts cheaper and more available. Whats not to love!
Love these, despite the... unusual front end styling
Another great car ,love your test drives especially cars from Wayne @ Stone Cold Classics .
The jaguar is native to SOUTH America, the Amazon basin, nothing to do with Yankeeland!
Americans say often "JAG - warr" with a definite "w" sound.
How beautiful they were - even compared with modern Jaguars.
Regarding that retro look being cool these days, its true. My 2000 Merc e-class (when it's shined up) really gets looks.
The car you're driving has much the same style as mine. I'm hooked on the 4 round light front end style.
Great presentation 😅
Certainly one of my top 5 designs ever. And contrary to what was said in the video, I had that feeling from day 1 after its launch. Sadly it is beyond my budget to fill up insure and maintain.
they can be bought for 750 euros in uk
Some bits of the car remind me of the crown vic
Aged very well. Great video.
Excellent car & review, beautifully edited 👍🏻
Lovely car and review, thanks for this.
It's funny, the S type has become quite good looking in it's old age. whod'a thunk it when it was released?.
Oh, yeah old age. Right.
Lovely car and terrific value
Correction on 0-60. If it’s not the 2.5 petrol V6. In real life they do 0-100 kmh in about 7 seconds tested and 7,9 in the brochure. 0-60 is 7.5 on the 2003 auto 3.0 according to Jaguar. Probably around 6,6-6,7 0-60 real world testing. They were not far off in terms of 0-60 compared to the 4.0.
Hello,
I've bought myself an old S-Type like the one in the video.
Very nice review and car. Love the S-Type
Still looking classy
Saabs aren't wierd, I had two 9-5's, the last one of which was an Aero. Brilliant cars. Ido like the S-Type though.
Yes the V6 is a Ford Duratec engine though it does have some Jaguar parts like the Cylinder heads, which are Jaguar.
Hey Matt. About time you tested some modern hot hatches or future classics.
It looks like new and still is an impressive car. Nevertheless, the design was not so successful as Rover 75 and despite the obvious differences in value, a perfect 75 has more british legacy.
Gorgeous car! Here in America people in the “body business”would have chosen a Cadillac for more trunk space! 😵
Lincoln Town Car
What did Joe Pesci drive?
A brilliant video as always Matt. A friend of mine had a couple of these before his XF which he says isn't a patch on the S class.
s class is tough to beat
Hi Matthew loved you vido I'm big Jag fan is good to see u diving sumthng good
The 3.0 with the 5 speed auto is pretty damn quick tbh. I'm looking at getting one with just 48k. Keep an eye out for rotting sills and rear subframe as things can get expensive. If you have a good un then zeibart the underside to keep things corrsion free. Expect about 19-26 mpg sometimes more on a good run.
Its a great rare classic cars these days. Mutch underrated. But here in Germany the prices for good examples with the 3.0 and 4.2 litre motor begin to grow up. The prices grow arround 20 - 30 procent in Germany with in one year. It's a head turner, especialy outside the UK.
You’re comments are very much appreciated, many thanks.
Manchester, England.
@@paulpalmtree9295 Thank you very mutch Paul. Hope we can enjoy these fine british classic Jaguar cars for many years in the future. I have an S-Types 3.0 litre from 2006 since two years, bought it from an 87 years old gentleman near Hamburg. I have had BMW and Mercedes, but the Jaguar is another world for me as a car enthusiastic. I don't want to give it away for the rest of my live. Best regards from Krefeld Germany.
Also normale Verschleißteile.
I agree that they have aged very well. I do quite fancy one with the extra R. I looked st an all black model some years ago that I thought was pretty cool. My wife wasn't so keen. Shame.
It's growing on me but I'd still take a late model XJ40
S, Gold, Sovereign, XJR or Majestic?
@@cornishrider
4.0 Sovereign
There definitely getting better looking with age 👍😀
