Giving this car a service when it’s not even due and getting the wheels refurbed is what all traders should do when prepping their cars. I’d definitely buy a car from you!
Fully agree with your point at 13:52 about keeping older cars in good nick and on the road is better than buying a new EV being better for the environment. Trouble is the ULEZ coming to many cities and towns, thus restricting use of older cars. Shame really, because many looked after older cars have a lot of life left in them.
I'm in a position where I could acquire a new car (middle-aged and everything paid off) but I choose to own old cars. At the moment I have a 2008 Mazda that is almost in showroom condition. It only does 26mpg but while it remains reliable the monthly fuel bill is still way cheaper than a loan repayment. The government punish me with extortionate road tax though while my leased car colleagues get away scot free. The government has never liked thinking people who are careful with their money.
@@cmtlr I have colleagues who are paying £400 plus per month to lease cars. It's utter madness. Dead money! The supermarket car park is quite funny. Most of the ones who look successful and wealthy are the ones who are actually scratching about for pennies at the end of the month. 9
@@rain-bender4712 it's also usually those people who moan the loudest that "ULEZ hits the poorest hardest" ignoring the fact you can buy a ULEZ car for less than one of their monthly repayments. It actually hits the people with a 4 year PCP on a Diesel Range Rover or Cayenne the most, but they don't like to admit that.
You’re so right about the environment. Its far better to keep a car like this than go pseudo eco friendly with a Ecar with an environmentally damaging lithium battery. An the Jag has a style you dont get now
I bought a 2006 2.0d se model last year as a stop gap. It’s the 2nd cheapest car I’ve bought in my 35 year driving history. The car runs faultlessly and is spec’ed to the hilt. You can’t go wrong with these as a cheap reliable run around. As a petrol head, even I was surprised.
I purchased a 2.2d sport 10 years ago for a cheap daily work horse and it’s been nothing but rock solid reliable. As for it being a mondeo in drag. It’s a heavily modified floor plan of the mondeo just like the Mazda 6 and the freelander but the jag has a different wheelbase to a mondeo. Then again it’s no different to V.A.G group cars nowadays so I don’t understand the hate.
Blame that idiot Clarkson. Trouble is that there are loads of other idiots who just copy him.. Every and I mean every automotive organisation shares components across model lines from floor pans to reversing light bulbs and anything in between. He was just part of Thatcher's cult who just wanted to trash the UK car industry because "people didn't want to work in factories any more". They would much rather stack shelves in Asda. Destroying things is so easy when compared to building them.
Years ago I really upset an X Type owner in my local pub. He came in wearing head to toe, Jag branded clothing. After a few pints, I had to ask him, what Jag he had (totally was expecting an E-Type or something). He pointed to his car and he totally blew up when I said "sorry mate, I can only see a Mondeo". Whoops, too much beer and not enough mouth control on my behalf ☹️😂.
Rather impressed that you went with the full alloy refurb even with the age of the car. If only many more traders followed suit as i would definitely pay more for something that’s mint and drive away ready…
@@NEILB1989 it’s one of the first things I look at too. My theory (which may be nonsense) is that if someone has bothered to keep their wheels in good nick then they both a) know how to drive and have probably driven it with care and b) give a shit about the car and have looked after it well. A premium or powerful car with knackered or scuffed wheels is a massive red flag for me.
@@recall2880 yeah the wife says that all the time, although she doesn’t have low profiles. Breaks my heart to see what she’s done to a fairly small reasonably expensive car. She couldn’t drive sheep if the truth be known
I always liked these cars. They had a touch of premium prestige without slapping people in the face. Makes it easy to park without worrying about being keyed
Very interesting! Had an X type from new many years ago. It was a great car. Motoring journalists went on about it being only a rebadged Mondeo which was nonsense. It annoys me that they never said an Audi was just a rebadged Volkswagen or a Lexus is a rebadged Toyota!
By this point the Audi A4 was completely different from a Passat and the Lexus IS was unrelated to the Avensis, but yes the British press always give Jaguar a hard time

Had a 55 plate diesel one for about three years and loved every last mile in it. Great cars. Awesome content as always. Love the cheaper cars in your series
My dad had a 55 plate diesel too. I loved riding in it and it proper nipped along. Had it in the family for about 6 years and did about 130,000 miles in that time. After we sold it I kept an eye on its records and it did another 100,000 after that. I don’t understand the negativity that people have towards them. Like I said, dad had it for 6 years and never went wrong in that time.
@@CMS-qo3wz Much maligned, especially the diesels (even in this video he tell us to avoid them) but my 55 plate 2.0d SE is immaculate with just 60K miles. I wanted a manual X Type and one without a DPF so I was lucky. It could do with an extra 20bhp which can be resolved by a retune or chip but I'm happy enough to keep it standard. It has its foibles such as a stupid boot mechanism that has no key slot and mine doesn't have fold down rear seats; the door handles are not 'c' type and can get broken when the doors ice up in winter if you pull too hard. The bollocks about a Mondeo in a dress grates with me, many executive cars have humble proven platforms from other models and the dynamics of the Mondeo are good anyway. Only around 30% of the car is shared with Mondeo, it's just a popular myth to slate it for the commonality.
I had the 3 Litre AWD version of this (same year) & it was simply superb. Ran it happily for a couple of years then decided to get something that was cheaper on fuel. I've since often wished I hadn't! Actually the 3 litre AWD is surprisingly rare now.
Snap! I had a 2004 3 litre AWD manual. Superb car. Only sold it because at 90k miles it was getting a bit close to the psychological value dip of 100k miles. Traded in against a gorgeous Jaguar Racing Green S-Type 2.7d.
Judging by the reassuring service record, decent bodywork (tiny rust), great wheels and tyres, nice interior, 2.5 AWD with just 95k on the clock, 2200 quid seems very good.
I’m I little late with comment but I have just purchased only 24 hours ago a 2.1 v6 x type 2004, one owner for 20 years and full jaguar history, you can’t find any rust on it whatsoever, been wax oiled twice once on purchase and again 2017, 49600 miles by an elderly gentleman who sadly passed away so his brother sold it, this stuff never happens to me I usually miss out on any bargains but not this time, it’s so lovely to drive and I’m going to keep up the maintenance on it so it will last many more years. Matt you were the inspiration for me to get one of these beautiful cars thanks
I've had 2 x types in the past an now drive an XF. The x type isn't a 'proper' Jag but I really enjoyed driving my ones. Cheap as chips to run, good economy, nippy and reliable. Someone will be well chuffed with that Matt.
@@keithmountain9437 Depends really. My XF is only the 2.0d - 4 pot, so some traditionalists might say that's not a 'proper' Jag either. Unless it's bigger than a 3.0l engine and a V6/V8 then people will always take the piss. Hopefully an XJ for me next. That's definitely a 'proper' Jag IMHO
A Mondeo for sure, but a nice upgrade. That dash is gorgeous. It reminds me of my Standard Triumph 1300TC. Looking at the wood everytime you got in it just brought up a big smile.
I'm consistently surprised how cheap cars are in the UK. I'm not a JAG fan at all but for that kind of money, it makes a good shopping trolley for someone. Interesting to hear Great Harwood and Blackburn mentioned. I can just imagine it winding its way down the A59. Good luck finding a buyer. With that profit, you can shout yourself a new pair of jeans.
things are a bit dearer now in 2015 i bought a clk320 for 700 quid it was fully specced i loved that car, then a clk430 v8 for 1500 in 2016 i got a cl600 v12 coupe for 1700,, but these cars are a bit dearer now but a few years ago cars really had next to no value, it was great for people like you and me
I love you man, i was literally looking at Hyundai coupe , Toyota celica and i remembered how much i love the Jag x-type and how capable they are and pop you posted this video and set me further in this direction
I had a 2.5 AWD 2004 model of these back in the day. Very reliable car and very nice interior and exterior. It was like a smaller version of XJ. Misunderstood and way underrated car because it was hated by the "purists" who thought it wasn't a "real Jag".
Had a 2004 2.5 V6 AWD manual in Jaguar Racing Green and loved it. V6 had such a nice noise without being vulgar. Unfortunately, had endless issues with it and wasted loads of money. Replaced it with my current XF which I still adore after almost 7 years, and hope it will last many more.
I ran a manual 3.0 Sovereign for over three years and it was one of my favourite daily drivers to date. Comfy, reliable and handled well. Great all weather cars. Oh, and my early 2006 model had no rust, in fact she’s still on the road 😎
I find it amazing that these x types are now available for less than the mondeo on which they were based. I'm sure that's not how Jaguar thought things would turn out!
I agree with you! Being a Jaguar fan boy I have always looked for the positive and the X type was a lovely sensible upper middle class sedan. An old lady across the road from me ( now sadly passed away ) had one and when she didn’t feel confident enough to drive it I used to chauffeur her around (hairdressers, bridge, WI ) and she loved that I looked after her car. I really enjoyed driving it ( me the then owner of a new XJR and annF-Type). It really was a great car if it’s time and deserves some love and respect. Ps: I still have the F-Type and that’s not going anywhere!
I love jaguars but I had two of these and both had mechanical issues. Now have an xf and I am much happier with it. Tata have done a great job with jaguar even if the look is less distinct.
I like the fact you're open about the purchase price and the spend. As a dealer you have to make a profit and give a warranty etc. Recently purchased a first car for the youngest and the amount dealers that have clearly taken a part ex and done nothing to it is shocking. Garages in Bristol wanting £3.5k for a 2006 Polo with 2 months MOT and a million advisory items, terrible bodywork, high mileage, crap service history and needing money spent on it straight away. Ended up with a 2009 i20 1.2 for £1900 from a part time trader and paint sprayer. I serviced it myself, replaced a CV boot and got tracked, it had 6 months MOT with no advisories. Body work is spot on for the age, loads of history a sensible number of previous owners. Owed us £2200 after doing the jobs on it. Youngest quickly took a huge chunk out of a tyre side wall, reversed into a low wall damaging the back box, then scraped the bumper and wing on the garden wall. But if I didn't intervene he'd have spent £2700 on a 2008 Swift in terrible condition, with 6 weeks MOT and complete f'd brakes all around.
I owned one of these, a 20D S on a 55 plate. Brilliant car that has no more than 20% to do with a Mondeo, mine had 107'000 when I sold it. No rust anywhere and a very strong quiet engine. The X Type is a very nice car, very well equipped and awesome handling.
Love an X-type. I bought one as a daily whilst having my Aston. Spirit Ltd Ed 2.5 AWD similar to this one (albeit with a sporty factory kit). It’s awesome. Cuts through the snow whilst the pretend 4x4’s are slipping more than an Aston clutch. It was purchased for one winter and this its still with me as my daily 3 years later. Only downside is the mpg is worse than the 4.7 V8. Yes, really. A good one is a bargain.
What a refreshing podcast...not everyone can afford an expensive car..so great to see an insight to what's out there for little money... didn't mind the baby jag being on ford running gear.. certainly looks better and parts readily available.. really enjoyed this mate 👍
My dad has one of these and it's a genuinely lovely car. His has done 170k and it is going strong. I don't understand why people have such a downer on these. What's wrong with the Mk3 Mondeo that underpins it? They were a fine car and superior to any similar era Audi or VW which are basically Skodas/Seats too. Inverted snobbery. 100% with you on keeping older cars going, that's why I keep my 18yo petrol in fine fettle and I recently learned it's ULEZ compliant too! Winner. Great video fella
I owned a 2002 X-Type V6 2.1 SE in Zircon Blue 85k, had it for 12mo, but it was constantly needing work. Paid £1800 from a dealer and sold for £2200 privately after a lot of repairs. It was a pain to own but fantastic to drive, and the interior was identical to the one in this video. Watching this video has somehow motivated me to get another!
Owned a 2.1 petrol 2004, brilliant car, loved it and it was trouble free even after being hammered up and down to Spain many times. Irish road tax made me sell it,
Drove and sold heaps of X Types as a Jag salesman for 8 years. In my experience all versions both petrol & diesel were very reliable. As you say Matt, sill corrosion was a common issue, clunking due to drop links and auto boxes with a mind of their own were also quite common along with the occasional transfer box failure. Like you, much prefer the estate. Best one is the 3.0 (231 bhp) Sport Premium , especially in facelift form from 2008 onwards, which had no chrome, diamond stitch leather, or alcantara in earlier versions, carbon fibre dash trim and lovely 18” 5 spoke Proteus alloys. Although I’m a big auto fan nowadays, the 5 speed manual in the 3.0 was superb and made the car much more responsive and much better fuel economy. Very scarce nowadays but worth it to wait until one pops up. 😊
the engines are reliable or the whole car, as auto box problems would then deem the car as a whole as unreliable as would drop link clunking, alfa 159/ brera has clunking suspension and thats classed as unreliable !
i had a buddy who worked for the RAC once, and he said when ever he got called out to someones x-type he would never be sure if the crunching he could hear as he jacked it up was the gravel drive or the rusty sills.
Classic quality review Matt. Clarkson drove a saloon AWD down a ski run in an earlier episode. My BRG 2.2 manual estate in sport trim (no chrome) has been a reliable drive for the last 14 years. Chad Valley central arm rest storage always gets a mention…not it’s best feature!
Loved this video Matt. My first Jaguar was a 2004 X-Type 3.0 AWD SE manual. Awesome car. It's true the X-Type had 22% parts commonality with a Ford Mondeo, but that was no bad thing anyway. The AWD was great for stability on country roads, you didn't have to wait for snow to enjoy the benefit. V6 is creamy although I must say I found the 2.5 litre underpowered: the 3 litre was awesome at 6.6 seconds 0-60 mph. I definitely recommend you try out a 3 litre, Jaguar still made the 3 litre estates after stopping production of the 3 litre saloons. The Queen did run a 3 litre AWD Sovereign estate. Apparently she had previously had an XJ and the centre armrest had a special extension to hold her handbag - that may be where the hand bag story came from. You didn't show it, but the glovebox catch on the X-Type has an extra hook. You can use it to suspend a handbag, or very handy for a takeaway when driving home! Also it looks like your car has the split fold rear seat. Not all Jaguars had that and it's a welcome practical option. Worth a mention in your advert, if the car hasn't already sold! Also looks like it has a CD player in front. That's worth a mention. I wouldn't worry about no Satnav, the Jaguar Satnav from that age would be well out of date anyway. I would just have mounted my phone on a dashboard holder and used Google Maps.
Got a 2005 x-type gold, fold down rear seats, AWD 3.0,even has original disc changer in trunk, complete history since imported from England, all the books from factory as well as radio code, 182k for $2000 aside from routine things to do ,pretty great car. Even was included with sale a donner veh.
I am totally amazed by how cheap cars are in the UK. I bought a 2006 X-Type 2.2d in South Africa for the equivalent of £4000 a year ago and have spent a further £2000 in repairs to date. About to spend another £500 next week. Hopefully it will be perfect thereafter. It's my 2nd X-Type. Bought the exact same car new back in 2006. You guys are really spoilt 😀
Great episode Matt! It was really interesting to hear about your down to earth, honest and common sense approach in your job. Very enjoyable and one of the best 'motor' channels on RUclips!
I had this 2.5 se auto model in the first model year. Sandstone leather and a wooden accented steering wheel . fully loaded. Best car I have ever owned in my life and miss it to this day. Those heated front windscreens were awesome and it handled like it was on rails with traction control on.
Glad to see at last you have set your esteem on a classic car of which I had two back in the days I had money. One was White Gold and the other a pale blueish silver colour but latterly the second became difficult to park in our parking zone as folk bought into SUV's. Still good cars, even from Mondeo chassis and engines and folk gave you room on tight roads, more than can be said today. Cheers Matt. (£2 per gallon? I think you said that wrongly and meant £2 per litre?)
He said that on purpose. He likes to throw these eggs in the videos to see if we are paying attention. Was an obvious one tho being that fuel is the same price as a bar of gold.
As an old grandad almost a great grandad, a motorcyclist for 60 years and currently a MX5 owner (NB) I love the idea of these type of cars and comfort. Great video as usual
I gave my AWD X-Type to my daughter for her first car because it was a sedan and great in the snow…. Kids at school would always flip her leaper around, it was mounted on the hood back in the day. She stayed a Jag girl with her ‘17 XE 35t. She still refers to it as the baby Jag. Thank you Matt, love your videos Jag or not!
Has to be worth £2300 in-that condition with the extensive service history it’s got. Not a bad looking car for it’s age strapped to a smooth V6 somebody’s on to a winner. Would have been your ideal flip when you first started up Matt.
Great video, one comment from an oldy who lives in a motorhome, when you are driving a 4 tonn plus , 7.5 metre length with a massive overhang that can cost £120,000 plus its good to just cruse along. Our age group pays the lowest insurance rates, and always remember it only seems like 5 minutes ago I was 20 years old. Keep up the great video.
I've also never understood the disdain these cars received, I think they've always looked a pretty car and to be based on a Mondeo isn't a bad thing. The late model V6 Sport models look really good, they've aged pretty well too.
Ran a 2D sport estate for 10 years. As an all round daily motor it was one of my favourite cars. Had all the leather, air con etc. Have an F type now but I’d quite happily have another X type. My old one was 06 plate and still being used as a workhorse by a plumber. See it from time to time and have that feeling of seeing an ex with her new fella 😂
I drove an X type on a test drive 10 years ago and I loved it. And I drive an Alfa now. It felt special and the real 4WD in the snow is great. It isn't modern AWD which i like.
Great video as usual Matt! I’m really enjoying the cheap car series. Im just wondering if you could do a review of a B8 generation VW Passat. I see you’ve already done a video with the Skoda Superb and I’m wondering how it compares to that car. Cheers.
I enjoy this channel so much , very honest when things don't go quite as expected. Have to say I am a Jag lover, had one xjs and three x type, my favorite was the 2.2 but just love the x type as a beautiful car.👍
2.2D are quite a good engines, but as all diesels, if the previous owner changed the oil after 30-40k kms, put some garbage diesel in it, it wont matter and they will cost a lot to fix.
@@BeryProduction Old diesels are too expensive in road taxes, and is illegal to drive in public roads almost all over the world already. They are worthless.
@@andersnielsen6044 Depends on where you live. Most of the EU states don´t have road tax or very low. Please tell me, where its illegal to drive diesels on the world, cause you might be living on different planet than me. Whole EU runs on diesel. US would be too if their gas wasnt that cheap. Even if its old diesel engine with older EURO standards like EURO3/4 they can drive fine, just might not be able to enter city centers.
@@BeryProduction Within 5 years it is so all over the modern developed countries. Here you cannot drive in to any city without at least Euro 5. No filters = No fun = Worthless, which means that I have exported 400+ old dieselcars from Denmark to Eastern Europe and the Middle East, just this year. No one wants them here. Some cities in Germany like Berlin, it takes an Euro 6 to drive, several cities of France has abandoned dieselcars completely, or on specific days like in Paris for instanse. ;)
I had an x type sport 2.2 facelift. The engine pulled like a train. Never saw the inside of a garage other than servicing for the 06 years and 90k miles I put on it . Great workhorses. Traded it in for my current xf260.
The X-type was essentially the jag equivalent of the 3 series and it has a lot of character, on the exterior at least. The interior dates this car with that wood finish. Would look so much more modern with something like a carbon wrap or a dark paint finish on the wood panels. 90,00'ish miles on a car of that year is a little over 5000 a year which means it was probably the tool of choice for the short drive to the train station for the owner before he bought his copy of the Telegraph and hopped on a train to work. it might also have come out for a leisurely weekend drive once in a while to Lytham St Annes or Matlock or anywhere where you can get a nice afternoon tea Performance wise it matches a 3series onhorse power and top-end but only when you compare it to a 2litre diesel... With petrol now at a pound a pint it's an expensive daily if you are doing 400 a week given that the same 2litre diesel will, on a decent run give you close to 50mpg as opposed to 29mpg for the Jag. Still as a weekender for someone who always fancied having a Jag. I have to say you've given the old girl a new lease of life and you could ignore the reg plate snobs by playing the "British classic motoring icon" card and you'd still be welcomed at your local golf club. You'll have no problem shifting this one Matt. A nice low mileage example like that deserves the TLC you've given it !
My 2004 X-type is identical in colour and interior but with the 3.0 AWD and 50500km, left hand drive, (Canada). It is all original; hoses, belts, tires, etc. Always garaged. I inherited it when my Dad passed away 6 years ago. My daily driver is a. 2011 Mercedes E-550. The Jag’s been a good reliable car though!
I see a lot of X-Types around where I live, bought by people who have to pay for their cars with their own money, so they have to be pretty reliable. The 'Mondeo in drag' was meant to be a put-down, but the X-Type brought Jaguar into a market they had neglected for far too long and I think the styling has faired better over time than the S-Type.
I’ve always loved a Jag, even these, the badge itself makes the heart flutter a wee bit faster. Watching your video has awakened the love of a Jaaag and autotrader awaits this afternoon 👍.
Ah the terror I felt when you revealed the space saver. I bought a used 04 2.5 and faced a 100 mile drive home using one following a puncture the first weekend out. Heated windscreen?
I had a 2005 3.0 of course, American left hand drive for 10 years...loved it! What a hoot to drive! And fast! The best sounding radio in any car I have ever had. It had a 10 CD changer in the trunk. Jellie! I want another....
When I sourced an Omega MV6 auto estate for my dad several years ago. The guy who we bought it from owned Jag X type 3.0 AWD estate in dark navy colour. He raced single seater cars all over the UK and also had a lovely air cooled 911 carrera 2 in red. So he knew how to pedal a car, but he said the Omega MV6 was a better car to drive in the corners compared to the X type. I have always liked those 3.0 AWD estates too. 🤔😂 Never took the plunge to own one though. That 2.5 you bought will sell, looks really good now the wheels have been done and low miles for its age too. 👍
Your banter when driving is as good as it gets and shows such insight, Jag on the bonnet and v6 badges in the wrong font. I used to see them all of the time when they were a common 'daily driver.' There is a lot to be said for a bonnet mascot in the days when we had cars with bonnets and the mascot got there before you. Personally, I miss my old Mercedes. Nothing better than a car with a gun sight on the bonnet in the days when pedestrians were 2nd class citizens and cyclists only counted if you nudged one into a hedge ( I joke of course)

@@robertavadani5946 it’s a legal requirement to have headlight washers if the car has xenon lights. Obviously there is a chance, especially on an older car that it’s had a replacement, second hand, non washer bumper at some point and the washers have been deleted.
@@ShalomBrother I'm talking about having the washers, but the headlights not being xenon. That's what I meant. My car was exactly like that. Had washers and had halogen bulbs. I had to replace the headlights all together for xenon ones
@@robertavadani5946 that’s fair enough, but the question asked was has it got xenon headlights, or has it not as you can’t tell by the shape of the bulb diffuser in the light? If it left the factory with halogen lights then there is no legal requirement to have washers. Maybe there was an option to have washers with halogens or maybe the washers automatically came on a certain trim level, who knows? All I do know though is that xenon’s always come with washers from the factory by law
I heard it's actually only 16% Mondeo underneath. Nobody complaining about a Lambo being Audi which intern has parts from being a VW or Lexus being a Toyota, etc. Never understood the problem.
I always liked the look of the X type and nearly bought one several years ago until I test drove them and it was a major let down. It felt cramped for me. Just a very mediocre experience. They were manual diesels I tested so maybe I would have a different experience with the auto with higher spec engine.
I loved my petrol manual 3.0 AWD X-Type but I had a 2.0d manual X-Type as a workshop loan car once and it was a dog. Slow, cramped, noisy, unwieldy and unloved. I was so glad to get back into my 3 litre! Diesel X-Types are pretty good cars, apparently, but you need one that has been well looked after. That workshop car hadn't been!
I really love the X. I'd get one over a C-Class W203 or an E46 in a heartbeat. Beige leather for me, though. Is it good for bangernomics? Would a petrol, AWD one break my bank?
a 3litre x type before an 1800 c class?? yes easy choice but would you take a 3 litre x type before a 3 litre c class or beemer??? that's a much much harder sell for me
I'm from the states, I recently bought this same model year Jag, typical loose headliner and rust, but for 600$, a very nice investment. I just wish mine was this color, I absolutely love that gray.
I had a 2008 2.2 Diesel Sport Auto X-Type. I really liked it but it did have a recurrent Turbo Actuator valve issue, even after having the Turbo replaced. Other wise it was a very nice car. My eldest brother ended up having it off me when I replaced it with 2.2 XF Sport LE. My local independant Jag garage rates the X-Type too and with the exception of those plastic sill covers....which alow the sills to rust...there's a lot to like about them. Nice car.
Great video...these older, cheaper cars are the videos I really enjoy! I've said it before...and I'll say it again...pure Partridge...especially the bit where you find the receipt in the boot .."every little helps"....Tesco...or is it Asda? Genius! Coogan will be getting you to write his scripts pretty soon!
My dad bought a silver one new in 2002. Same spec but beige interior which looked quite classy. When he sadly passed away in 2007 I kept it for a while. Nice luxury motoring and as you say the V6 was very smooth. Cost a fortune in fuel though even then. Definitely not a £2/litre car. Sold it after about a year and got a Ford S Max as that was more suitable with two young kids and I wanted the Jag to remain immaculate. Happy days.😊
My Dad had a 51 plate jag X type auto in a kinda gold metallic colour…I was insured for it wen I was young…loved it…heavy on fuel tho if memory serves correct…and it usually does.
Owned my 08 plate 2L diesel for over 10 yrs . Never let me down i love it . No horrible crome or silly jag emblems on the bonnet I am happy to report lol Looks like the boot may have a leak Check the boot vents Just replaced mine lol £ 8 on ebay 👍
My family has a awd 2.5v6 estate xtype since 2005 and its been a extremely reliable car. The family only did the very basic maintenance and even now in late 2022 it works perfectly. Even when standing unused for several months (3-5months) it starts up with only one minor warning which goes away after a few miles of drive. Im surprised how well it holds up. It has run fairly low amount as its just over 152k km. But as i stated previously it only had the basic maintenance. So overall if these cars especially with petrol enginse get a tiny amount of love&care they do run without any serious issues. We only had to change battery 2times and the stability control electronic unit 2times in 17years along with oil and filter change every 2years or 10k km. We also had a 99' S-type bought used at 2017 with 180+k km and used it for 2years and 30k km with only 2oil and filter change and one battery change. So basically in my experiance jags from 1999 to 2004 are actually pretty great. Though this is only my experiance and i can't say all jags from that period of time will do this well but what i saw they do pretty well
Ive got a 2.0d sport it hasnt missed a beat in the 3yrs ive had it,ive just bought a c class merc,an im keeping the jag, because its so reliable and its quite quick as well,as audi an merc drivers have already found out.
I have a late 55 plate 2.0SD manual diesel estate, had it 8 years and fuel economy is brilliant. There should not be any visible screws fixing the top edge of the sill covers. They're held on with hidden plastic clips, very similar to interior door card fixings, and several all plastic plug and screw fixings underneath. They've probably been broken if the covers have been off for any sill welding.
I had a V6 AWD XType back in the day and loved it.. I didn't know that Jag produced different capacity V6s though. Mine was 3.0 ltr.. It was brilliant in the snow and the wet and surprised a lot of folks. Bit thirsty as you say. Had no issues what so ever and that V6 is a super smooth engine with loads of oooomph.

2006 2.0d fella here. What a good pick, mister. Cheers ;)
Is 2005 as good?
The hate usually comes from VAG fanboys, first blow and all that..
At least the X Type looked like a Jag. These days Jag's look like Mondeo's.... 🤣
Well said. It is just pure snobbery and Jealousy.

I have a white 3.0 AWD X-type sitting outside right now!
Mines a 2.5 but still happy with it when it's roadworthy!
Good economy on the highway
Got a 2005 xtype,gold,3.0 AWD

The XF platform is the same as the S-Type (and Lincoln in the U.S.) Does that mean that the XF is less than a "proper Jag" ?

I love you man, i was literally looking at Hyundai coupe , Toyota celica and i remembered how much i love the Jag x-type and how capable they are and pop you posted this video and set me further in this direction
I like what you’ve done to this Jaguar X Type. It didn’t take much, but it’s enough to completely transform it into a desirable car.👍🏻
Here in Denmark I just (may) traded one like this one, a 2002-model. Bought it for £4.000 and spend aprox £400 on it. And sold it for £5.700.
Tata have done a great job with jaguar even if the look is less distinct.
jag after 2010 is a slow motion train wreck
new warranty claims say it all. they were at the top of the industry in 2009 and now they’re at the bottom
The only thing that bugged me when I had an X Type was the centre arm rest which creaked every time I put my arm on it. Apart from that great car.

That’s a gorgeous example of an X Type. Beautiful Jag lines & of course “Radio 2” selected on the stereo 🇬🇧👍
Nothing wrong with 88 if you get that far you are like a good car Worth keeping !! Anything old is good is it not because it got there ???
I should be so lucky
I had 4 of these in the family and 3 out of the 4 went to the scrap yard with failed transfer boxes. The 4th was the 2.2 diesel that was FWD.

I've also never understood the disdain these cars received, I think they've always looked a pretty car and to be based on a Mondeo isn't a bad thing. The late model V6 Sport models look really good, they've aged pretty well too.
About 19% shared with Mondeo overall. The rest was new.

The X-type was essentially the jag equivalent of the 3 series and it has a lot of character, on the exterior at least. The interior dates this car with that wood finish. Would look so much more modern with something like a carbon wrap or a dark paint finish on the wood panels. 90,00'ish miles on a car of that year is a little over 5000 a year which means it was probably the tool of choice for the short drive to the train station for the owner before he bought his copy of the Telegraph and hopped on a train to work. it might also have come out for a leisurely weekend drive once in a while to Lytham St Annes or Matlock or anywhere where you can get a nice afternoon tea
Performance wise it matches a 3series onhorse power and top-end but only when you compare it to a 2litre diesel...
I really like the XType. Lovely to drive, massively underrated and unfairly ignored. They’re far better styling wise than most of usual euro boxes.
Totally agree!!!!
Great result and you seem to have a good mechanic at very reasonable rates.
Heated windscreen?
light in glovebox
I had a 2005 3.0 of course, American left hand drive for 10 years...loved it! What a hoot to drive! And fast! The best sounding radio in any car I have ever had. It had a 10 CD changer in the trunk. Jellie! I want another....
£800! What a bargain. Personally I think its worth every penny of £2500 after the work you have done.
I used to see them all of the time when they were a common 'daily driver.'
There is a lot to be said for a bonnet mascot in the days when we had cars with bonnets and the mascot got there before you. Personally, I miss my old Mercedes. Nothing better than a car with a gun sight on the bonnet in the days when pedestrians were 2nd class citizens and cyclists only counted if you nudged one into a hedge ( I joke of course)
Those were the days indeed
I have a 2005 2lt desiel same colour and interior.i absolutely love it.paid £650.00 for it.spent about £800.00 to get it upto spec.lovely to drive and own.sorry to say I put a leaper on the front.great video.
I think if it had xenon’s it’s would have headlight washers in the bumper 🤷🏽♂️
Not necessarilly, I had one that had the washers and no xenons. You have to check the bulbs to see if theyre xenons
@@robertavadani5946 yes but he’s saying if it had xenons it would have the washers.
If a car left the factory with xenon headlights it was also legally required to have a washing system installed.
If it left the factory with halogen lights then there is no legal requirement to have washers.
Maybe there was an option to have washers with halogens or maybe the washers automatically came on a certain trim level, who knows?
All I do know though is that xenon’s always come with washers from the factory by law
I used to have a 2.5V6 SE in dark blue years ago, absolutely loved it, did well over 100,000 miles in it.
surprise surprise a fantastic service history well would we have guesed that one ???
I have an x type 2.2 diesel sport premium and is a wonderful car. Love it, it's done nearly 200k miles
not a single warning light as per the norm ????
I like the mix of the higher production videos (which I've been enjoying), and the ones where its just you with a camera (which I've always enjoyed).
I really love the X. I'd get one over a C-Class W203 or an E46 in a heartbeat. Beige leather for me, though.
Is it good for bangernomics? Would a petrol, AWD one break my bank?
25 to 30mpg.
For daily drive these days , you might feel it.
Weekender….no problem.
a 3litre x type before an 1800 c class?? yes easy choice but would you take a 3 litre x type before a 3 litre c class or beemer??? that's a much much harder sell for me
I'm from the states, I recently bought this same model year Jag, typical loose headliner and rust, but for 600$, a very nice investment. I just wish mine was this color, I absolutely love that gray.
I had a 2007 3.0 AWD X-Type. No real problems until about 90,000 miles; ABS went, and I traded it for an XF. The X-Type was quite a nice car.
Genius! Coogan will be getting you to write his scripts pretty soon!
...ironically Alan would love this car!
Matt I just like to thank you for all the little things you show us on what to look out for when buying any used car.
Owned my 08 plate 2L diesel for over 10 yrs . Never let me down i love it . No horrible crome or silly jag emblems on the bonnet I am happy to report lol Looks like the boot may have a leak
Check the boot vents
Just replaced mine lol £ 8 on ebay 👍
I have no intention to be a car salesman, but I watch your content for your honesty, visuals, sarcastic funny ways of just being honest, and just telling it like it is.....From your content I bagged a E Class convertible and sold it with £700 profit...For that I thank you
Well done!
