Is This CHEAP Jaguar S-Type The BEST Car To Work On?
HTML-код

- I bought the cheapest (and probably the ONLY) manual Jaguar S-Type in the country. This 2003 Jag S-Type is powered by the 3.0 Duratec, with a 5 speed manual behind it, and it's rear wheel drive! A pretty incredible package for how cheap the car was. Now we're going to fix TONS of problems we found in the last video and keep working on it until it's back to it's former glory. That's going to cost thousands of dollars but I think this car is actually worth saving.

That's it I'm making an entire video on wiper blades since people keep saying they aren't $3... I actually paid less than $3ea ($2.64) for these but I'll go show you the price at OReillys with and without an account. Buy the right wipers (Trico Standard or 30 series) and they're still cheap, pay $30ea if you want but there's no reason.
I'll be watching for this. Haven't seen blades that cheap since refills stopped being a thing.
If you live near an Ollie’s bargain outlet they always have wipers and they are less then 5 bones a piece
I recently paid 99p (UK) for a blade for my BMW 7 series. Not just the refill, the whole lot.
However, personally I went for the flat blade type for my S Type, like I have on my XF. They work much better, especially at speed. JR, look up Bosch AR608S.
I've never had any luck with Trico. I'll pay $10-12 each for Bosch Evolution or Icons which I can guarantee a year out of.
I've been following since before he was fired for doing RUclips. I've only ever commented a few times. I've GOT to say, it's really fun having him back in his garage like the good old days.
Yes, but I'm sure he'll find a right-sized garage with some storage and a lift. The giant building he sold had to be a relief to get rid of, I'd imagine it was just a huge money-pit from every aspect.
100% worth spending money on this Jag, superb engine and you just don’t see any more. People are so quick to dismiss an old Jag and say it’s rubbish but I’d happily say it’s far better engineered and reliable than an equivalent 3 series by a long stretch (and I know the Wizard would agree) Yes it’s a Ford engine but that is a good thing! The Duratec V6 is a superb engine. But people wouldn’t winge about a BMW because it’s a bloody BMW.. yawn. Huge kudos to you JR! Love the Jag
Yes, I've seen many of these V6 3.0 Duratec engines with well over 250,000 miles! That's and the ZF 6 speed auto found in the later models pushed be to get an 08 S-Type. Purchased for $4K in 2019 and I LOVE IT!!!
It is the Ford 3 l. Yeah, those 3 l v6s were great engines. It's just everything else attached to it. That was terrible on the Fords that is infamous Taurus transmissions that never last more than 40,000 mi
I think I wrote on an earlier edition that when it was fully inspected on a lift the issues were all down to maintenance stuff not being done. Of course having to do it all in one bite is expensive but that car is a solid well built car that delivered even when running on sub spec parts.
Well done JR for keeping the faith on this unsung beauty. She will reward your faith.
Great that you're bringing it back. These cars have beautiful styling, good power and handling and it's a Jag.
It is a decent looking car and it still drives nice even with completely worn out suspension, sign of a well designed car I think. It'll be a really nice car when everything is done and the 5 speed should make it worth more 👍
Pull the o2 sensors and put spark plug non-foulers in the o2 bungs then put the o2 sensors into the spark plug non-foulers. It will get rid of the check engine light.
I love the S Type. It has the classic Jaguar inspired lines, but with modern updates. That said, the car maybe tight inside.
It’s a beautiful thoroughbred car. The v6 engines are long lived and very reliable if serviced properly. Over here in England an illuminated check engine light is an MOT (inspection) failure. I had to replace one of the cats on my S type , got it from eBay only about 200 pounds, so no more check engine light. If it needs inspection disconnect battery for a few minutes it will go out for a few cycles before returning. You also need the insulation put back on the underside of the bonnet. Cheers Chris
I haven't looked recently but I found the under-bonnet insulation was difficult to get. I have a 2.7d and the insulation shrunk so all the mounting holes tore off. I tried unsuccessfully using double sided tape to fix it on. Is there a source of new bits of insulation? I saw one in the US which was aftermarket but it wasn't shaped in any way.
Here where I live in the US, a check engine light is an automatic emissions inspection failure which means either you fix it or your vehicle registration gets revoked.
@@AnontheGOAT that depends on your state, it's not US-wide.
@@AnontheGOAT US has many states and some states have emissions testing. In Midwest they are smarter and most states in fly over country don't have that stupidity (except some big cities).
@@annechang6459 no emissions tests in Florida
I fixed the CEL on my 2002 Chevy Blazer (4.3L), after replacing the blown out cat with an aftermarket one, by using a simple 'sparkplug extender' on the downstream O2 sensor.
The joke about Jaguar is that they went to Ford for help because they couldn't figure out how to make the electronics leak oil. LOL.
Love the S-Type. I went through the almost whole Dew98 platform, had a V6 LS Sport for 17 years, STR for almost 2 years which was amazing and now have an XFR which is just best car for the $$.
I have a 2003, S Type. 3.0L. Blacked out version. March 2024, and I have 59,000 miles on it. Not a spot of rust.
Changing out the original plugs, coils, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, and new injectors. Rear sway bar links too. Parts aren’t cheap, but I’m 100% behind what you’re saying…it’s a blast to drive. It’s not the price of the parts, but the car. And surprisingly, it’s really good on gas when cruising down the thruway.
I’m having the local foreign shop do my rear suspension. I could do it, but they can do it much faster and easier with the lift.
Good looking car and it’s worth saving. If it was some import four banger with turbos the people that told you not to fix that car would be telling you to throw everything you can at the other car.
It's actually because it says Jaguar on it and most people associate early 2000s Jaguar with pile of shit
Nice, Jaguar. Nice when it was new. Just joking, love the content. JR goes after fixing any of these old cars. Nice new Ford P/U. What a road trip car hauler beast.
Thanks for saving the S Type! One one my favorite Jags! Even the 6. Especially with the manual. One of my aspirational vehicles. Keep it up!
Im happy you are fixing the Jag, Im a Jag fan from way back and I love most of them
Love the Jaaag JR. I'm very glad that you are saving this one. Having driven a similar car (an automatic) I can first hand confirm that these cars have amazing power delivery and a smooth ride, all while giving a very connected to the road driving experience. There is an enthusiast for every car type on the road, some lucky person will benefit from all the hard work you are putting in on this old girl.
Another great video from JR. Keep it going
What a great car. Really interesting video. Interested to see what it’s like/what you feel when you’ve finished working on it.
Love it! Great to see another S type fan! :)
You can buy angled lambda sensor connectors that move it a bit further away allowing the engine light to go off as it’s not getting the same amount of hydrocarbons and such so that light could potentially be out as well if they work for you.
Oh…. An good to see you got your mojo for the videos back.
Somedays you just gotta keep pushing.
I love that you're saving this car, thank you.
I' m replacing the steering road on my SType 4.0 and it s really not a piece of cake 😁👹. But for the rest each time nothing too hard for maintenance work with parts easy to find. A great car that worth to be saved.
Agree with you driving experience is special
Grease those door hinges too JR!
Been a sub for a long time. Always enjoy your content. Your knowledge is impressive, did you go to school or just learn as you go?
I for one am pleased you're fixing this car. Jag's are cool and this one looks smart, simple as that.
New merch: watchjrgo hat thing with a pad in it so you can hold up a car hood with your head and change the struts without hurting your head
I have a 2003 jaguar s-type r only 205 made that year 400hp supercharged v8 brembo brakes perfect condition garage kept all its life
Totally get the wiper thing, first thing I always change as major bug bear of mine is crappy visibility due to poor wipers, I tend to always got for Bosch, bit more expensive but definetly last
I know you have your rules about cars, but fixing everything once in a while is a great video!
We need car crusher update, JR? We need to see it eat! Nom...nom....nom
I must admit watching your videos inspired me to change my hood struts 3 years ago. Thank you 🤣🤣
You can tell ur not where it snows too much. In NY we'd never use wipers that aren't one piece. Those cheap ones would trap snow in the arms and you won't see anything. But I can't wait for more videos on the Geo for sure
Great to see the Jag getting some love.
I owned one of those a few years back. Loved it
J Swap a Miata! I have one you can put it in.. keep up the awesome videos! You show people how easy things can be (or tricky) and not to be afraid to pop their hoods!
3:35 omg! I tried to catch the hood for you lmao
Glad you are saving it.
Hi JR, Love how these cars drive. I am also reviving an old Jag from the early 2000’s, an 04 XJ8. Lots of the same suspension issues…..curious on how you develop and clear that airbag light.
You can get the check engine lights to turn off for $5. Without replacing the cats. Look up a secondary o2 defouler. You need 2 one for each secondary o2 sensor. It pulls it out of the stream and makes the o2 read as is you have a good cat. That's the old-school way to do a cat delete without tuning.
Beautiful car, it's worth saving. 👍
I'm a big fan of the 3.0 Duratec. I have an old '11 Fusion with that engine. It's just a good drive. I have 238k on it, and it is almost as solid as the day I got it. And the maintenance isn't too hateful. Until your "upper" oil pan gasket starts leaking. In the Fusion, it's an engine-out repair. Oh well. Nothing is perfect.
Yay!!!!!!
Any car that has you smiling that much driving around the block must be worth saving
Jaaaaaaaaag is baaaaaaack
And better than ever... by tomorrow it'll be a different car 😳
Am glad your fixing ye jaguar
Definitely try the spark plug fouler trick on the o2 sensors see if it works.
I'm really impressed with how quickly you replaced those parts. 👍
You can get spark plug non foulers for the rear o2s to evade the p0420
I've always loved the way the S-Type looks. Really like it in white. Wonder if an LS will fit under the hood? 🤔
Loving the S-Type Jag. Good choice sticking with it. Any "hacks" on getting the early ECUs to either void or accept the new cats?
You buy the bulk trico (not the fancy ones) in the back on a commercial account (any shop) I can totally show you a receipt
@WatchJRgo. If you like it, fix it up and enjoy it for a few months. I think it's cool. Spent some time in Lincoln LS and felt the same way.
my sister has a 2002 Jaguar S-Type and the front ball joint was shot/no good, it had lots of up and down play in it so we replaced it and it still had up and down play in it after we doctor it up😲 did some research and i think if this happens you got to replace the knuckle wonder if you will run in to the same problem?>
I think if you look up the coolant spec it is not Dexcool.
It's orange, which is literally the exact Dexcool spec. The label on the car and the book call for orange coolant 🍻
Great content JR! Any chance you can gets CATS out of a junkyard or is that the first thing they take off the car?
It's still a nice car, so definitely worth saving.
Personally, I'm happy for every car that's saved, especially the ones where it's not worth it from a financial pov. Just seems wasteful to junk cars that could still serve someone well if fixed.
I think the fact that maintenance and repairs were not done by previous owners and the vehicle is operational, for let's say a work commute, is a testimte to how good it is.
I dumped $1300 into a 04 CR-V my parents gave me and at 277k it's still rolling.
THAT IS A NICE CAR JR
Are you actively looking for a new shop? What's going on keep us posted

Trico on any commercial account every day of the week... they'll sell you a whole case for $20 🤷♂️
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!!
I love this car I am happy it’s getting saved
Ha ha I jumped to grab the hood for you lol
Run a 5/8” drill bit through a set of spark plug non-foulers and install them between the secondary o2 sensor and the bung. Problem solved!
That might be the fix... getting really hard to find those now that eBay banned them 😬
@@WatchJRGo O’reilly still carries them! Dorman part.
JR always up for a challenge, maybe he's met his match. Parts filled the back seat, he might want to use his flatbed
See if you can get a Europe tune put on it, will deal with the cat codes unless they are totally gone, high octane fuel only though.
Cheapest 24" Trico blades I found at O'Reilly auto parts were $23.99. Do you get that big of discount by mentioning them?🤔 I'm glad to see you fixing up the Jag, it deserves to be saved for the fun to drive factor alone.
I've got a s type that always has the radiator fan on when turned on. Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix that?
Project idea for you: get a 2000s Thunderbird, a Jag S-type R-type. Swap over the drivetrain, Supercharged v8 and manual gearbox, the Dash, console, seats. And then the front clip from the Jag. That body line crease looks to be about the same as the the Tbirds
There was an R years ago
Welcome back.
These videos are making me think about buying a 3ltr Jag S type that I don’t need especially with our fuel prices 👍🏻🏴
If you're in the UK, I'd recommend the 2.7d. Going from the 3.0 petrol at 22mpg to the 2.7d at 45mpg opened up a whole new world of road trips for me!
Those cars aren't bad on gas
Seems to me it would make a great Oreilly’s run vehicle or a daily. Whichever one you would prefer
JR, what's the latest on finding property for a new shop?
I prefer silicone blades. So quiet when you just want to swipe away a light mist.
Pretty sure not getting them for $3.
$3 Trico's sound like there would be a lot of chatter in that situation.
Make sure to include slight mist, mostly dry performance in your wiper video if you make it.
The feeling you are sensing is quality....They have been around long enough to fix that , same as bentley and rolls Royce
The V8 model and the supercharged V8 model is worth saving. They are increasing in value and they are a pleasure to drive.
"back to it's former glory"- don't think anyone in the history of the world ever said that about an S-Type! lol
I have an idea. Visit other RUclipsrs around the country and replace hood struts for them. Have O'Reilly sponsor this.
John Ross even with aftermarket cats on you should still be able to take out the engine light! 🤔
Hey JR, I would love to know what kind of bmx bikes you have hanging back there?
Remembering the day you installed a quickjack on your garage and spoke about the air tools, it may help you everyday.
I'm happy to see you extend this car's life, but I hate that you are back working like a muggle. Hope to see a lift in your future
again a great video, I see the sound-proofing is missing under the hood
Is that sound proofing or head protection?
@@philtowle4683 it's the felt that is usually glued to the hood (bonnet) to prevent height heat dissipation from engine to paintwork as well as reducing noise

Nice!
we need the turbo escalade
Hood struts - the 1st thing needing money and effort. What happened to the old slot-in rod? Don’t recall that thing ever breaking.
M539 Restorations is RUclips`s BMW Guy. Is JR turning in to the Jaaag Guy? 😂
Oxygen sensor spacers on the post cat sensors have always worked for me
P0420 is an L 😒
Gm coolant probably a good thing heater cores always plugged up and stopped working in all the fords
Have one and have been fighting oddball issues for years with it. Just wait till it arbitrarily commands a global open (all windows down and sunroof open) while parked. Also, a majority of the mechanicals are available from ford for way less $$ as most of it is a lincoln LS.
This car is worth saving; unlike that metro.
I only buy older cars usually Volkswagens and mini coopers. Whenever I’ve needed a cat is only once what I did was I bought a car that had the same cat that was wrecked and took the cat out and put it out the rest in junket.
Are you still looking for a shop? Or are you going to build something from the ground up ?
I always wondered why they didnt sell more,,, maybe it was the ford badge, but they are powerful and so distinctive on the road ,,
Is it possible to add a resistor to get the CEL for the cats to turn off?
I love what you do JR but why in the hell have your videos become so short? I look forward to your content and I get 12 minutes of content? Come on man! We need more!
Did you not know he has a TON of videos under the videos tab on his channel. I am sure he probably has a crunch on his time between his personal life and the time it takes to edit and produce these videos. Give the guy a break already.
Personally I like this length of video.
I like them concise and to the point.
As mentioned in your original vid the coolant level light will still come on as the float does not float in modern engine coolant. If you don’t believe me cut float out of old tank and do a float test. As soon as pressure increases in system down goes the float.
You must have got a faulty tank/float. I replaced my tank after about 160k miles a few years ago due to the float no longer floating when the coolant was hot and I've had no issues since then.
Of course the one from the old tank won't float properly, that's the issue, they go bad over time.
Anyone know why my S type when I get between 1st and second on the transmission it seems to miss a bit then I hear a thud and it triggers a gearbox fault...then it shuts the car down into limp mode. You turn off the car wait minute restart clears the code off the limp mode gone and you can drive i regular until it happens in the same time...the tranny runs great drive it everyday. One guy I read said the tranny is a Lincoln but the jag engineers tied a coil mis fire to the tranny so if you have a coil bad its not the tranny its the coil or electric for if it was the tranny it would be bad all the time ...any help? I do have a check engine light on too.
