Compared to the SATA-2 slots max of like 250 mb/s ish, and a m.2 sata cards max of like 500 mb/s ish, its not too bad! Austin, I don't like you, or your channel but I love the old Mac Pro and Power Mac G5. I did the exact same thing on a G5 2003 I got at a garage sale. I just fell in love with the thing and it has been the only dual socket thing I've ever owned. I gave it 8gb of DDR1 ram, new HDDs, the best AGP x8 GPU it could take, an AirPort wifi card, new DVD writer, new thermal paste ( a pain on those custom motorola CPUs). Mad respect for you to actually do this the right way and get an addon socket for this and max it out and go balls out. You just got a sub for helping this old Mac. This is what Apples were supposed to be for, cheap (relatively) and easy to user upgrade for the home and office professional look at the Apple 2GS or first Power Mac.

Not only was the CPU I installed never offered by Apple (trashcan Mac Pros came with 4, 6, 8 and 12 cores), but it's better-value than the official configurations: you could get a 3 GHz Mac Pro with eight cores, but the 3 GHz CPU I installed has ten.

    I've done this to 3 different vintages of mac pro towers. By showing a 3.06GHz clock it looks like you took it to dual X5675. you can always push those a little further and drop in the X5690 and push that to 3.46GHz base speed. I wouldn't waste money on delidded CPUs , just grab a matched pair on ebay. You don't need to delid them for the stock coolers. You do need to watch voltages though as the X5690 is a 130w chip, unlike 90w that apple shipped stock. I can confirm that the stock PSU will run dual X5690s as well as a Quadro K5000 without issue under 100% load. They still make great video and 3d graphics machines.

    Dude you should have asked the Low End Mac community for advice. I have the exact same machine, a 2010 Mac Pro. I upgraded mine from 2.4GHz 8 core to 3.46GHz 12 core. Installed 96GB of 1333MHz DDR3 ECC memory. You really only want to use 6 DIMMs with this model, because the CPUs only support triple channel memory configs. If you use all 8 slots then your memory has worse performance. I also added a Radeon Pro WX 7100 GPU, basically the workstation equivalent of the RX 580. It's single slot, single 6 pin power required. With the latest EFI firmware update, you can even boot off NVMe! So I have an NVMe card in mine with a Samsung 960 Pro boot drive. My NVMe card has room for 4 NVMe drives. I also added a USB 3.0 card and a 10GBe card, both from Sonnet Tech. Last, all my hard drive bays are filled with 14TB Seagate Iron Wolf Pros in RAID10, which I use for network time machine backups. My Geekbench multicore score is 26810.

      @chriscalderon1337 5 лет назад

      Other thoughts. If you really want to make it a crazy upgrade, you can even replace the wifi and bluetooth cards to enable hand off and Wireless AC. You could also do something called the Pixlas mod, which add extra PCIe power cables so you could install a Vega 64 card. Now THAT would be sick.
