This was the first time I’d ever seen or heard of him. I didn’t hear Conan introduce him as a comedian so when he made his first joke about his name I didn’t see it coming. He was hilarious to me. And here we are.
"The only problem with having a distinctive laugh is that I know exactly when you're not laughing. 'Oh! Distinctive Laugh doesn't think that joke was funny!'" - Mitch Hedberg.
I still remember this set when I was watching this back in college when I used to watch Conan religiously. He was relatively unknown then. I was so glad he was able to achieve the success the he deserved.

I am floored by good the old show looks in HD; I know, duh captain obvious, but very few people had HDTV back then, so to me my memory of Late Night NBC Conan is always in grainy 4:3 footage.Conan looks so young in that clip too.
I also love the one where he asks "does anyone care if I smoke in here?" and he pulls a *cigarette from the pack and drops it, and you hear *tink tink tink* which is obviously a metal one-y painted like a cigarette. Then he apologizes for the prop comedy and says he feels like Carrot Top when he does that joke.
Fun fact. My old boss used to play basketball against the Big Show. They knew each other and he has videos of himself poking Big Show in the chest on the court as teenagers.

The first minutes I was watching his Netflix special, I was thinking, where are the jokes. And then bam, he got me hooked and it's one the most original specials with amazing improv moments. This bit on Conan is much more telling great jokes in a short period and traditional one-liners. His special is very different.

It's Netflix buying the rights to air a show or to air it exclusively on Netflix. Like Ricky Gervais shows on Netflix are just tapings of a show.
It just occurred to me this is an evolution to Mitch Hedberg. Hedberg did all these great one-liners, often w/ a jazz bass playing in the background. This is just the logical progression. Don't get me wrong, I think it's incredible, it's just cool to realize where it's genesis is. Another way I look at Zach and Hedberg is they are basically "jazz comedy". Just picking and choosing what...and what NOT...to say is just like jazz...it's only good if the right combo of notes is played...and NOT...played.
I like to think this is zach's homage to mitch, the piano is a a crutch between the non sequitur, but zach does well to use it as more of a bridge. It is crazy to think this is only a year after the untimely death of a legend.

For me zach galifinikis and norm macdonald are the two best stand up acts. I've listened to infinite interviews and podcasts with both guys and never once heard them mention each other, which is weird because they both, norm especially, discuss other comedians frequently. I don't know, just a weird little thing that I think about sometimes.
