For the record: Portals can move. In Chapter 5 (The Escape) at the thirty-third level of the game, you have to place portals onto moving panels to cut neurotoxin generator tubes by using a laser - • Portal 2 walkthrough -... - This gameplay mechanism is not activated by default, so a special command was used to achieve the experiment (sv_allow_mobile_portals 1).

The fact that portal is able to run this kind of stuff at a pretty good frame rate honestly surprises me.
it's the same as when you put portals on parallel sides of a room
@@vibaj16no
It's not completely real time, and thus is manageable without a strong computer, there are temporal shaders. Most of what you see deep in the nested portals has already been rendered before. That's why there is a delay. Similar effect to pointing web cam at display that shows feed from the same webcam.
@@CossackHDthis same principle is how they created the old doctor who intros, it's called howlround
Not only is this scary because theres an infinite number of you trapped with yourself, but also that any sound made in this crushed state would theoretically never end or silence because the sound has no where to go but straight back to you over and over again
While that is scary, in regards to the sound your body would eventually absorb it all so I don't think it would last forever. But it would certainly last a lot longer.
I think it would be absorbed back into yourself
_"Row, row, row your boat..."_
@@Alpha-kt4yl *_While that is scary, in regards to the sound your body would eventually absorb it all_*
There is an infinite number of "yous" in this state, so that means there is an infinite number of "things that can produce a sound." A sound getting absorbed and eventually stopping would imply the number of sounds made are finite. How can the sound eventually "go silent" if there is an infinite number things MAKING IT?
Repetitive sounds (even those normally not heard) like your heartbeat would accumulate, so eventually you'd be plagued with noise pollution your own body caused -- billions of heartbeats overlapping one another.

Portal is actually a relatively light game. So not much would need to be used for the game and more can be focused on processing the visuals for the fractals.
Actually since fractals are just an infinite repetition of one single geometry I'm pretty sure they're insanely easy to render. I believe there is a game based entirely on this concept where you are a marble that has to roll through HUGE fractal landscapes

I have a funny feeling the developers simply accounted for this experiment in their programming.

This looks and feels exactly like one of those dreams where somebody explains to you the actual meaning of life and you think “Oh my god! That’s so simple! How the hell did I never think of tha-“ And then you wake up and IMMEDIATELY forget!
First you would crush into your own body. Then, once they meet, there would be no portal, because it would lead to itself. Although an odd circumstance would be if they met but with different rotations. The portal would exist everywhere but one, overlapping point.
There will still be a portal no matter how hard you try you cant acheive 100 percent contact with the portals everything has a thickness etc unless your trying to make a black hole and no you would not be crushed by your body if you got crushed fast enough being in contact with your own body would slow you down
It’s like the ending to interstellar, you are both in and out of space.
Ok
I love interstellar
Being out of space is impossible (in a game then maybe not). Being in a void and out a void would be like in a black hole, but in a neutron star as well.
Nikodem Kraszewski well what I mean by “out of space” is like saying being inside of a singular point with no surface area or density, black or holes typically have these however spinning black holes do not, what they have is called a ringularity which is similar to the portals in portal, it has no surface area with no mass or density, being inside of a ringularity is still not known nor do we know what would happen if your were between two of them... also when I say between 2 ringularitys I’m referring real life not what would happen in portal.

Silver Ash Fur fuck, you got me
Man, you HAVE to remake this video with Portal RTX.
That's not doable. Portal 1 doesn't support moving portals.
@@TomatoRadio Yeah, makes sense.
This reminds me of when the animation team of Interstellar rendered a black hole for one of the scenes. And then theoretical scientists were like....."you know, that's not wrong..."
Imagine if this game engine got it right if you created an extra dimensional space by pressing two portals together.
The theoretical scientists are the ones who rendered it genius
well theoretically if this could and did happen then anything crushed between the portals would just be crushed by itself infinitely or smth right
If the portal even horizon doesn't actually have any volume on the other side to fill, you will be crushed, just like with a Stargate iris. And since your matter has nowhere to go, it will just evaporate as pure energy, like hawking radiation. You will essentially be turned into a miniature blackhole that will evaporate pretty much in the blink of an eye.
The fact a game can simulate endless fractal reality similar to how powerful hallucinations show your own reality kind of makes me wonder what that computer program is thinking.
Well, that's an interesting question. As far as I know the engine with which the game was made has been specifically made for things to go through portals... Not Portals going through things. The portals themselves work like this. First up: Display what you would see when looking through a portal with in game cameras. It's basically a live stream. Secondly: Add teleportation of any object when it collides with da portal.
Thirdly: Store velocity before entering portal. Add velocity after exiting portal.
My theory is that this is the result of the portals sort of looking at itself, no crushing mechanic being added to the game and the engine's restriction. Once again: It was made to handle things going through portals. Not portals going through things.
As I recall the game only simulates a certain number of recursions in the "infinite portals" scenario. 12 maybe?

Kilo Kai This would be 2D, since there's no depth. There is only height and width which is equal to the size of the portals' openings. Think of it as a drawing on a sheet of paper, as it pretty much doesn't have depth.
But if we're being really technical the portal 'paradox' wouldn't be a paradox or a problem in real life, as no two objects in existence can touch eachother down to the electrons, due to their equal electrical charges, making them repel eachother. Therefore if this (video) was to happend in real life, there would be a microscopic ammount of room between the portals, meaning it would still be in '3D' where the depth of the room would be infinitely long, while being as wide and long as the room would be otherwise, except you would be trapped from going further to 'the sides' by the portals' edges.
keep in mind you would also be crushed by your own body ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'm surprised the game doesn't just crash
why should it?
Games crash for errors or just lack of memory in your pc. Inside a game there is nothing impossible since there are no laws of physics inside a game.
fIRE It's just kind of weird, is all. I want to know why this happens, and more on how portals work in this game. It can't be just a teleport, b/c that would've killed you instantly (since it would've teleported you into a 'crushed' space). It's really interesting, but I'm just kind of confused
Not necessarily true. The game mechanics are Source Engine based since it's Valve.
Open up SDK point two mirrors at each other and the map you attempt to make will never compile. The engine can't handle 'infinites'
So I'm kinda surprised as well, but I assume since it's portal they have preset limits to account for weird things like this.
It's like when you share your screen over skype or some screen capture program while the app itself is in the field of view. When you decrease the amount of the screen shared to *just* the app, it infinitely shows the screen inside the app. (I hope that makes sense...) In Portal, that "field of view" is a tiny circle that almost never has the other view inside of it.
A fate worse than death. Trapped in negative space. Nothing but yourself, and time. All the time in the universe. The eerily haunting theme of the Self-Esteem Fund is a very fitting choice.
