No need to program the batteries unless it has battery management. It looks like a small control module on the negative terminal. Typically if you have start/stop it will have it though, in that case you need to have it reprogrammed at a shop or dealer after reinstall. Sorry for the delayed response!
Thank you, FCP. I love your battery install video. Easy to follow instructions. I ordered my first Odyssey battery today from Odyssey website and the programming questions left me wondering if there was an extra step involved. On the other hand, if there was a programming issue I'm sure you would have mentioned it in the video. Best
@@madmex6526 no problem! Next time you need to order an Odyssey battery and want it to come with a lifetime Guarantee be sure to check it out on fcpeuro.com :-)
My MK7 Autobahn has start/stop, but I don't see a module on the negative terminal. Is recoding necessary?
@@JohnPaulLafata I don't know. My 2016 has start/stop too. My first Odyssey battery purchase was for a 20 y/o SUV I have. I'll be ordering another Odyssey very soon for my GTI as my original battery is now 4.5 y/o.
@@JohnPaulLafata ....just ordered my Odyssey from FCP Euro. From my wasted hours of reading - there's nothing to do with the coding. Like the video says, drive around the block and any dash lights triggered by disconnecting the battery should turn off. One guy just turned his steering wheel left and right, never left the driveway, and his dash lights turned off. I'll report back after my install.
I knew how to change a batter but explaining the lights at the end was so clutch . Thank you!!
Great video.
I just did this and found the large H6 size battery at Costco even though they don't have VWs or BMW in their computer..lol
The fit was great.
I always use battery terminal gel to prevent corrosion.
Had traction control and tire pressure errors that went off after driving and reset pressure.
Clock didn't lose it's setting or radio stations, stereo settings.
I cut the outside corner of insulation jacket and covered the terminal wires as well to protect them from heat. I had no corrosion in the battery tray on '15 Sportwagon
115 dollars at Costco for full size H6 Interstate Battery.
I tried H7 from Costco and it looks like the bottom of air filter would need to be removed to slide batt in and no room for tie down plate and I didn't want to experiment fitting it currently.
Cheers
This is what I did to my 2015 GSW TDI (Mk7). I just replaced my old EF H5 battery (I think it was a CPO replacement) with a Die Hard H6 AGM battery. I also bought battery terminal protector (small packet gel) and coated the terminals and connectors. I have a slow 2 amp setting battery charger, and connected both ends to the cables in the car before I removed the cables, and kept them attached the whole time. You can tie off the negative one to keep it out of the way but keep the charger connected. I also used some small rags around the cable connectors just to be sure nothing sparked. After the new battery was in, I attached the positive cable first and then the negative. No sparks. I then unclipped the battery charger cables. My smart VW was clueless that it had a new battery. Using OBDeleven I updated that I now have a "Binary-AGM" battery type (not EFB) and increased the rating from 61 to 70 Ah. I really don't think it cares about Mfg or serial #, but I guess you put those in just to keep the data current. I left 1111111111 in place and typed in DIEHARD. There were zero faults in this process. I'll update if I have any issues.
You need make to know in ECU the battery had changed ! The batterys AGM comes with a code with and need to be insert in ecu for better electronics gerency. The cover in the battery increase ther life
Thanks for letting reminder of that extra bolt securing the battery. My son and I were pulling with all our might to get the old battery out. He thought there was possibly something else possibly holding it down. Sometimes teenagers do know stuff.
So glad we could help out!
You should discuss the whole issue of AGM vs regular lead acid. I recently replace battery in my 2016 GTI and I kid you not, i called over 15 shops including 2 dealers and most thought the car had AGM stock and said you MUST reset the computer after installing new battery and you need scan tool. Autozone refused to sell me a battery cuz they said it MUST be reset by dealer or mechanic. Even vw dealer told me it was agm but I called multiple dealers and finally talked to vw PARTS GUY, he looked up the VIN and said ITS A NORMAL LEAD ACID, H5 OR H6 WILL WORK, NO RESET NEEDED.
I spent weeks researching this as my car was still starting but slower and battery tested BAD by 2 diff auto parts places so I knew it was going out and it was 5 years old. But no one knew what kind of battery was oem and wanted PR codes. The vw PARTS guy told me PR J1L and also gave me oem vw battery p/n. so FINALLY after all that junk i realized i could just go to sams club and get a h6 installed (free installation). As you noted, battery tray is long enough for h6 and multiple mounting holes for the hold down bracket to mount. MANY places said i coul NOT get AGM if car just had regular lead acid. some said you cant get regular lead acid as the car came with AGM and charging system made for it. SUPER CONFUSING. Some said you need a MEMORY SAVER to plug in or put battery charger on the cables while battery was out to SAVE THE SETTINGS...but my settings where there after even though sams club didnt put on charger while battery was out. oh, the windows would NOT auto up/down right after...you had to hold the button for all the way up or down THEN they RELEARNED and auto up/down worked. car ran fine though and all radio stations were there.
Please do video explaining all this krazy AGM stuff and resetting computer and what not. BAD INFO all over the internet and auto parts places are confused too.
How much did it cost u at sams club? Like how much should i expect to pay in general?
Thanks for sharing this helpful video with the DIY VW community outthere. In my case the battery died on me all out of the sudden w/out any warning. I was lucky to be at a gas station where I was able to get it jump started so I could drive to the closest VW dealer to have it replaced. So I wonder why modern car technology doesn't allow the driver to check on the battery status as it was in the old days when most cars had a voltimeter on the instrument cluster?...
Mk7 battery needs to be coded for longevity. While it doesn't overall matter, the battery will not last as long due to the charging curve been different as it ages.
If your vehicle came with a standard flooded battery and you install an agm it will not charge correctly. You need to change a few settings with VCDS.
1) battery manufacturer
2)Battery Type- change type to "fleece" for AGM
3) battery capacity- input the AH the battery is rated for.
4) battery serial number- put anything in for this, it just let's the ecu know a fresh battery is being installed.
The MK7 GTI isn't listed on the fitment tab of the page linked in the video description. Is the linked page definitely the right battery for a MK7?
Water and baking soda mixture to neutralize the acid. Use an old paint brush to scrub the tray. Flush with clear water. Use a terminal brush to scrape the corrosion off the car battery terminals and brighten up the battery posts. You may need a battery clamp spreader pliers to expand the clamps to fit the battery posts..
I’ve read online and have heard from local mechanics that putting in a new battery for many audi/vw vehicles requires some sort of coding to the ECU? Is that correct?
Thanks! Saved me a bunch of time and money. You da man 🤙
Great and thorough tutorial, thanks a bunch!
More mk7 GTI vids! Great video as always.
More on the way, Mike! Glad you like the video!
would you guys recommend using one of those memory saver things that plug into the obd port?
Thanks for this, now I installed my new battery on my mk7.5 gti properly! ❤️
Is urs Start Stop? If So , Did you need to write code of battery on ecu with vcds? Thx
do you need to tell the computer that the car has new battery now?
I have a 2017 GTI Sport. I assume I don’t need to register the new battery right?
What setting are lost when the battery is disconnected. Clock defiantly, driving statistics?
Hi would I need to reprogram the radio and that?
What about battery registration?
ive brought a new battery for my 2014 VW caddy maxi, if i change the battery do i need to do all the computer stuff aswell?
Great video! You guys should post a video about n80 valve! I hear disconnecting it/ replacing it on higher mileage mk7’s makes a big difference
Glad you like the video! We'll definitely look into that, thanks for the suggestion!
Do you guys have a video of a battery replacement for a 2019 Jetta 1.4? Does a 2019 require adaptation or just driving and turning the steering wheel end-to-end will reset everything, by the vehicles ECU?
The 2019 Jetta will typically require the same sequence and adaptation as the MQB Mk7 GTI. In our experience, the steering adaptation usually resets itself after the battery is changed provided that the one coming out is not completely dead, and the car has not been without power for too long.
I have 2015 GTI - dealer said while replacing the battery to use trickle charger so some computer settings do not get erased - is that true?
I was told I had to get the “computer/ charging system” reset on my 16 Jetta TSI after I change the battery. Is this true, or is there a DIY procedure for this?
is the Mk7 GTI and GLI come with AGM battery, or regular 12V?
mine came with a regular 12v, i assume they all do
Cover protect from cold not from heat. Second is to perform adaptation for Ah and bartery type.
Perfect. Thank you.
Battery Heat Shield
According to the VAG ERWIN Self-study guide, guide No.504 “Vehicle Batteries- Design & Function”, the engine bay is considered a high temperature place for the battery. This can adversely affect the durability of the battery due to:- “Corrosion of the positive grid, water consumption, & self-discharge increase.”. They also state that AGM batteries must retain the heat shields they have been installed with as they are more susceptible to heat damage. Conversely if your car wasn’t fitted with an AGM battery there is a chance that it won’t have the required heat shields & you will have to retro-fit them.
The memory of the computer in the car is not lost? Some people say that if u disconnect the battery, you will lose the memory of the car.
yes the ECU will lose its memory and you will lose your radio stations. The ECU can relearn everything though. When you first start with the new battery, the engine will be pretty rough, no cause for alarm it just had its settings cleared and will relearn them.
So with this battery switch I don’t need to reset the computer on my mk7.5?
thanks, very helpful.
You're welcome, Jon! Glad to hear it was helpful!
Thank you very much. This helped a ton.
Is there a light weight replacement battery that has the same power spec as this one?
I would have washed the area out with baking soda and water. This is to neutralize the battery acid so it doesn’t eat through the metal.
That's a very good idea.
can we replace EFB with AGM ?
I have a golf mk7 GTI and just replaced the battery - it has battery management on -ve terminal and start/stop technology.
Went into carista to set the battery type expecting to find "fleece" as the Battery technology to set, but it is not listed.
I have the following options:
WET (LEAD-ACID)
AGM
BINARY AGM
EFB
EFB+
Setting for the factory fitted battery was EFB (seems odd) at 69Ah
Installed a Bosch S5A05 AGM start-stop 70Ah
Is this a failing of the carista app? Do I keep with EFB or move to AGM? Everywhere I look says fleece is the setting...
My understanding is that AGM is the same as "fleece". I guess you figured it out 2 years ago.
Great explanation and quite simple
Glad you think so!
Very helpful!
Don't you have to code a new battery?
Great video… Thanks!
My car battery died but I thought I could get a buddy to help me jump start it. The car came back to life but then said Immobilization Active and it would not turn over. Any idea wtf happened there? Is it not recognizing my key? If I replace the battery so it has full juice again, how can I get the Immobilization to disable or recognize my key?
Second time installing a battery in my MK7 both times the CEL/TPMS warning didn't go away and I had to remove them via VAG/COM. Anyone else experience this?
Those should clear after a short drove, if not clear them with OBDeleven or Vagcom and initialize the tpms
Hi, i didn't see you do a reprogram of the battery monitoring system, wasn't it necessary?
I seen from other videos that it is only required if your VW has the start/stop feature and if it does there will be an extra cable going to, i think the positive terminal. If your car doesnt have that system you could still reprogram a different battery size and it shouldnt hurt anything but not required.
Just had to change my battery on my 19 gti. All the comments had me worried about this. I have the stop/start system. However after driving, it seems all codes cleared themselves.
What happens when the lights and codes don't go away after a drive as depicted. I can't seem to clear my ABS, ESP, steering angle fault
Did you figure this out? Please replay.
@@DatGameCollector Those should clear after a short drove, if not clear them with OBDeleven or Vagcom
@@fcpeuro it did. But was freaking out while it was happening.
mine never went away, i cleared them on obd11 but they came back
defo start with negative, i started with positive on my car, the spanner touched the ECU, now no car.
I saw what looks like three little screw marks inside the battery Bay. Is that to adjust what size battery you put in there? And if so would it be possible to stick an h6 or h7 battery in there for more cranking power and reserve capacity? And then would the car have to be completely reprogrammed?
I tried H7 from Costco and it looks like the bottom of air filter would need to be removed to slide batt in and no room for tie down plate and I didn't want to experiment fitting it currently.
@@sonofrobert don't think you can go bigger than H6
@@AgentOffice
You're right, returned the h7.
H6 is great!
It wasn't worth doing modifications to get h7 to fit..lol
Cheers

I should have grabbed an extension in the first place. Follow
thanks for the video!
I just bought a 2019 GTI, opened my hood and noticed that 2nd hole behind the one that the battery is mounted on. I thought that the dealership forgot to put the bolt back and i started getting all paranoid. Its just an optional battery mount hole hahaha
glad you got that sorted out!
stock battery is size 47, the space can accommodate a size 48 if you use the other mount hole
I would have wiped down the base plate with either soapy water or baking soda water to neutralize the acidic residue left behind.
Hello, so my MK6 gti sat for a few months and the battery completely died. I charged the battery and tried hooking it up, the alarm started going off. What should I do???
Try using the key to lock and unlock the vehicle via the door lock.
Disconnecting a battery on a late model car without backup power is just asking for problems.
In Germany this replacment costs 310€.
it's really ridiculous
£250 in UK so pretty much the same, I remember when batteries used to go for £50-60 ...
If the battery is dead, your settings are already gone.
Almost all batteries come from the same facility. Just buy the cheapest battery you can find
FCP, why won't you answer the do I need to reprogram for the new battery questions? Yes or No? If so, show how. If not, great. Come on, man.
just pinned a response Mad Mex, sorry for the delay on our end! Hope it helps clarify everyones questions
