    To make some things clear to those who bought a Lenovo S340-15API, I got the 256 NVME SSD (I didn’t know this was nvme when I got it) with 4+4gb ram. I upgraded the 4gb slot (only 1 upgradeable ram slot) to 16bg for a total of 20gb. I also installed a 1TB ssd into the hdd/ssd slot which wasn’t being used internally on my laptop for a total of 1.256TB of memory. Machine runs great and having the additional 1TB of storage separate is great. I suggest popping open the back panel to see what you have. It requires a T2 star bit and a pry tool. I hope this helps

      I just bought the same one and to be honest im not super familiar with pc's. Did you notice that there almost seems to be a delay of some kind when clicking on things? Its driving me insane that its not snappier considering im coming from a 2012 MBP. Does the RAM upgrade speed things up? Also, Ive read not to upgrade the removable ram because it makes it less efficient. Just wanting to make sure before I go through the process and upgrade it.

  • @AmpliFreQuency
    @AmpliFreQuency 5 лет назад +1

    I bought the S340-15IWL on sale for $420 and it came with a 250GB m.2 NVMe, a 4GB RAM stick (making the total RAM available 8GB as the extra 4GB is soldered on), and a slot for a 2.5 drive. I took the Samsung EVO 850 out of my old laptop and installed it in the Lenovo for storage, and will upgrade the stick of RAM to 8GB and the NVMe to 512GB. It's a VERY nice laptop, just don't expect high quality gaming on it.

    • @ovidiukk

      Why not? I mean when I search on youtube the proccesor 3500U I find some games that runs very fluid. You don't think this laptop will run CSGO fluid? In ytb I found that's run with 100fps most of the time on low settings 720p

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  5 лет назад

      I think nobody expects high quality gaming for this kind of laptop.
      However, it plays 3D games fluidly with appropriate graphics settings.
      For example, you can play FIFA19 with auto setting flawlessly with about 30FPS all the way.

    Hello, great video I enjoyed it a lot. I’m ordering a crucial 8gb to replace my 4gb when my laptop gets here. Also mine comes equipped with a 256gb ssd should I add more or is this enough? I’m only going to be playing games like Minecraft and CSGO. Also mine comes with 8gb of ram but I saw ur comment that video card takes 2gb so adding 8gb will make 10g available.

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  4 года назад

      It depends what you do with this laptop.
      I think 8GB ram expansion is a kind of necessary to do something beyond casual web browsing, or netflix.
      If you like to install some games, I think it is wise to pick 500GB ssd, because SSD gets slower when you almost use all space.

  • @zkratzz

    Thank you for the review and upgrade! What is the laptop made of? Does the charging connector feel flimsy/cheap? Can you play modern games on it; if so how hot does it get?

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  5 лет назад +2

      Case is made of aluminium, gives a decent build quality.
      Charging connector is a DC standard power pin. looks little bit old-fashioned compared to USB-C PD laptops, but looks robust. Power brick is very small, and simple.
      It is very disappointing that this laptop doesn't support USB-C PD power supply.
      For gaming performance, it is capable to play modern package games like FIFA19 (single player mode) with automatic graphic setting. Fairly smooth, keeps 30FPS most of the time.
      However it is not optimal device to play multi-player games require higher performance.
      I am preparing a simple review covering gaming performance. stay tuned :)

    I really appreciate the time you took to explain us how to do this. I have two simple questions. What''s the biggest capacity the replacement ssd can have? and why didn't you use a 3200Mhz memory as suggested on lenovo's website,??

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  4 года назад +4

      1. There is no limitation for maximum capacity of SSD in the spec sheet. I think it should work with any SSD up to 1TB.
      2. It is true that the Ryzen desktop processors performs better with high frequency RAMs like 3200Mhz.
      However, mobile Ryzen 5 3500U processer only supports up to 2400Mhz. So there is no reason to use faster&more expensive memory.
      If you are buying newer laptop with new Ryzen mobile processor like Ryzen 5 4500U, you should look for 3200Mhz RAM. Because the cpu supports it.

    Nice video! Where can I get the flat plastic tools you use to open the case? I know the case is aluminum, but are there any delicate pins inside (like on a plastic case) which break easily when opening the case?
    I got a Lenovo S340 model 81QF0002US . It comes with a 256 GB M.2 MVMe SSD and does not have a 2.5" SATA hard drive. I'm wondering if I could I could add a SATA hard drive or SSD? My guess is my model will not have a mounting bracket installed and I'd have to find one. It might not even have a SATA connector which would make it near impossible to add a 2nd drive.

      I bought the tool at Aliexpress.com but it takes like ages for shipping. If you are in the US, I recommend to buy it from Amazon.com, search 'phone repair tool'
      www.amazon.com/VIPFIX-Multi-purpose-Opening-Professional-Disassemble/dp/B07DLS46M2
      I don't think the plastic latch of the laptop is too delicate, but it is highly recommended to open it gently with plastic tools that I used. As long as using the right tool, it should be okay.
      For your specific model, I think it should have one 2.5 inches SATA bay empty to upgrade.
      Any laptop with empty 2.5 inches bay for upgrade, it should have required mounting bracket included.
      To be sure, you may need to contact your regional Lenovo distributer to clarify that.

    • @gyuhangcho2584

      I can think of 3 possible reasons.
      1) degraded battery : if you have used the laptop more than 1.5~2 years under very harsh condition (=meaning charging/discharging frequently), the battery may be too degraded. check battery cycle, and estimated capacity.
      2) if you connected anything to the power charging port, it will drain out internal battery even the laptop is off. disconnect all USB peripherals, and test again to verify if this is the case.
      3) This laptop has an battery indicator function even if the laptop is off. if you are using key skin, it may press keys to activate this function without you knowing it. enter the bios (or UEFI) and turn off the function and see if it helps.

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  4 года назад +1

      Good question Ian.
      For modern pc & laptops, dual channel work not only symmetric setup(same sized modules) but also asymmetric setup. If you install 8GB module, 4 GB portion of your 8GB RAM module will work as dual channel with 4GB of onboard RAM. and another 4GB will work as single channel. This is not same like symmetrical dual channel, but it is still beneficial.
      Dual channel is 'technically' beneficial for more heavy load situations such as 3D gaming, hi-res graphic job.
      In fact, having 4+8GB RAM is so much better than having 4+4GB setup, because total RAM capacity is way more important & effective for everyday use, including casual office/graphic works.

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  5 лет назад +5

      If your model came with 8gb ram total, it is 4+4. 4gb soldered, 4gb module inserted to ram slot.
      If you want to add 8gb, you need to take out 4gb module came with.
      Which makes 12gb total.(4 soldered 8 expansion)
      Physical ram is 8gb for your device at the moment, but 2gb us reserved for integrated graphics core (AMD VEGA). so, if you upgrade to 12gb(4+8), about 10gb will be usable ram
      By specsheet it supports up to 8gb ram module, but actually supports 16gb module, too. Which makes 20gb ram(4+16), usable will be about 18gb

      Also, in some region, this laptop may comes with 2.5 inches SATA SSD or HDD. In that case, you can't add one more drive.
      First, check your laptop has 2.5 inches SSD or HDD already. This can be done by disassembling or thru software like Crystaldiskinfo by checking product code to determine if the storage is NVMe type or 2.5" SATA type.
      If your laptop is not equipped with any 2.5 inches, choose an additional 2.5" HDD with 7mm thickness. There are drives with 9.5mm thickness which can't be fitted nicely.

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  2 года назад +1

      First, you need to verify how your 8gb is setup. It could be 8GB soldered with blank RAM expansion socket, but also it is possible to have 4gb soldered and 4gb module inserted to the RAM expansion socket, the latter is the more likely setup.
      Opening up the laptop will give you definative answer, but if it is too much trouble for you, you may try apps like CPU-Z to check in advance.
      In case if you have 4gb soldered, and 4gb module. you need to consider switching existing 4gb module with either 8gb or 16gb module.

    영상 잘 봤어요. 저 또한 이 제품을 구매한 사람입니다. 아직 배송 대기중인데 궁금한 게 있어서 댓글 남겨요. 요즘 나오는 7mm짜리가 아닌 9mm 구형 노트북 하드도 장착이 잘 될까요? 하판이 튀어나온다는 말도 있고 해서 여쭤봅니다.

      스펙상 7mm만 사용 가능합니다. 억지로 넣을 수 도 있지만 권장하긴 어렵네요. 제 생각에도 하판이 튀어나올 것 같습니다.

      You need to lookup PSREF Lenovo website with your laptop's model code.
      psref.lenovo.com/Product/Lenovo_Laptops/
      If your laptop is Ideapad S340-14IWL, I think it has same design, 1 NVMe and 1 SATA.

    Hi, can we add both SSD(given with the laptop) + 1TB normal Hard disk together? SOFTWARE installed in 1TB hard disk... Boot from SSD?

    • @gyuhangcho2584
      @gyuhangcho2584  5 лет назад +2

      That is totally possible, but you need to consider this.
      If your S340 is equipped with NVMe, you can simply add any type of 2.5inch SATA drive you need, HDD or SSD.
      But, you MUST check the thickness of your 1TB HDD before you install.
      This laptop only accepts 7mm HDD or SSD for its SATA bay.
      Most 2.5 inch hard drives are 7mm nowadays, but still there are 9.5mm hard drives.
      for example, HGST 1TB or WD black 1TB are 9.5mm. these models can't be fitted to the s340.

      @gyuhangcho2584  5 лет назад +2

      @@ashokvardan7387 This laptop has 1 x NVMe slot and 1 x 2.5inch SATA bay.
      So if you want to use SSD+HDD, you need to use 1x NVMe SSD with 1x 2.5inch SATA HDD.
      Of course you can use both together. Booting with NVMe, and installing softwares on SATA HDD is also totally possible.

    Do you happen to know if the ideapad L340 has soddered ram or memory module installed?

      There are several different models of L340 lineup, so you need to be specific.
      For Lenovo products, you can find all the detailed technical specifications on psref.lenovo.com/
      For example, L340-17API has 4GB soldered, and has one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket.
