Nice video! Where can I get the flat plastic tools you use to open the case? I know the case is aluminum, but are there any delicate pins inside (like on a plastic case) which break easily when opening the case? I got a Lenovo S340 model 81QF0002US . It comes with a 256 GB M.2 MVMe SSD and does not have a 2.5" SATA hard drive. I'm wondering if I could I could add a SATA hard drive or SSD? My guess is my model will not have a mounting bracket installed and I'd have to find one. It might not even have a SATA connector which would make it near impossible to add a 2nd drive.
I bought the tool at Aliexpress.com but it takes like ages for shipping. If you are in the US, I recommend to buy it from Amazon.com, search 'phone repair tool' www.amazon.com/VIPFIX-Multi-purpose-Opening-Professional-Disassemble/dp/B07DLS46M2 I don't think the plastic latch of the laptop is too delicate, but it is highly recommended to open it gently with plastic tools that I used. As long as using the right tool, it should be okay. For your specific model, I think it should have one 2.5 inches SATA bay empty to upgrade. Any laptop with empty 2.5 inches bay for upgrade, it should have required mounting bracket included. To be sure, you may need to contact your regional Lenovo distributer to clarify that.
Hi Gyuhang... May I know the MTM number mentioned back of your Lenovo Ideapad S340-14api? Because I'm using MTM 81NB001TIN which says max I can upgrade upto 12gb. Can you please suggest.
I can think of 3 possible reasons. 1) degraded battery : if you have used the laptop more than 1.5~2 years under very harsh condition (=meaning charging/discharging frequently), the battery may be too degraded. check battery cycle, and estimated capacity. 2) if you connected anything to the power charging port, it will drain out internal battery even the laptop is off. disconnect all USB peripherals, and test again to verify if this is the case. 3) This laptop has an battery indicator function even if the laptop is off. if you are using key skin, it may press keys to activate this function without you knowing it. enter the bios (or UEFI) and turn off the function and see if it helps.
I think casual video editing is okay for this laptop. However I strongly recommend you to install additional RAM. Mine came with IPS panel, it depends on regional model.
I used Logitech Anywhere MX here. It is my daily driver for laptop only. Anywhere MX series is a great everyday carry mouse if you don't use middle click. Because its middle click is seperated from scroll wheel.

Good question Ian. For modern pc & laptops, dual channel work not only symmetric setup(same sized modules) but also asymmetric setup. If you install 8GB module, 4 GB portion of your 8GB RAM module will work as dual channel with 4GB of onboard RAM. and another 4GB will work as single channel. This is not same like symmetrical dual channel, but it is still beneficial. Dual channel is 'technically' beneficial for more heavy load situations such as 3D gaming, hi-res graphic job. In fact, having 4+8GB RAM is so much better than having 4+4GB setup, because total RAM capacity is way more important & effective for everyday use, including casual office/graphic works.
Dual channel is not a thing to turn on or off. It automatically works. Do not worry about it, and just upgrade RAM as mush as you want. :) You can check if dual channel is 'on' with softwares like CPU-Z
There is no sticker you need to break into the motherboard. Metal EMI shield covers the memory socket is detachable. The only thing you need to take extra care is the plastic tab which holds back plate. It is easily broken if you do not use proper opening tool & and right force. Good luck!

Hey friend what do you think about of adata ram memory? Can I agree the adata memory to the notebook? Without conflict. Sorry my English is not good. Thanks a lot.
There is no guarantee for cetain RAM module will work or not. But, RAM modules are generally fine nowadays, because they have JEDEC memory standards. As long as you pick RAM module from well know brands, it should be fine. I think ADATA is fine, if you have no other option like Samsung, Crucial or corsair.
If mines doesn’t come with a sata SSD or HDD, do I have to copy/transfer the operating system onto the SSD/HHD before installing it and booting it up? Like the computer is brand new. Not turned on
Officially supported up to 8GB, but actually you can install 16GB module, too. I suggest 8GB though. because 16GB is a kind of overkill unless you 'really' needs more RAM for your everyday task. For example, super hi-res photoshop work, or heavy EXCEL works.
I managed to install 16gb of RAM in this laptop, so I got total of 20GB (4GB onboard + 16GB SO-DIMM) and dual channel works perfectly, but I broke one of the plastic clips in the process, now my laptop have a very small annoying gap in the bottom :(

@@kinjalpandya9366 oh ok, i misinterpret your question before lol. No, so far there is no problem, im running ubuntu and windows in this laptop with total 18gb (2gb for integrated GPU) ram just fine.
If your model came with 8gb ram total, it is 4+4. 4gb soldered, 4gb module inserted to ram slot. If you want to add 8gb, you need to take out 4gb module came with. Which makes 12gb total.(4 soldered 8 expansion) Physical ram is 8gb for your device at the moment, but 2gb us reserved for integrated graphics core (AMD VEGA). so, if you upgrade to 12gb(4+8), about 10gb will be usable ram By specsheet it supports up to 8gb ram module, but actually supports 16gb module, too. Which makes 20gb ram(4+16), usable will be about 18gb
@@coolguyvideos599 Yes, this laptop only supports up to 2400 Mhz, and there is no overclock option in the UEFI(BIOS). Since the most (99%) RAMs have backward compatibility for low-frequency, so there is no reason to intentionally buy a DDR4-2400 module instead of a DDR4-2666 module (which is easier to find, and generally cheaper). If you buy a DDR4-2666 laptop RAM module(called SO-DIMM) manufactured by well-known brands such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron, Teamgroup... it should be okay.
@@gyuhangcho2584 I have a samsung evo 850 ssd. Do you happen to know if that is a 7mm drive? Also is upgrading the battery to a bigger battery possible?
Technically, S340-14API can be equipped with one NVMe(M.2 PCIe), and one 2.5 inches SSD or HDD. However, it only designed for SSD or HDD with 7mm of thickness. Also, in some region, this laptop may comes with 2.5 inches SATA SSD or HDD. In that case, you can't add one more drive. First, check your laptop has 2.5 inches SSD or HDD already. This can be done by disassembling or thru software like Crystaldiskinfo by checking product code to determine if the storage is NVMe type or 2.5" SATA type. If your laptop is not equipped with any 2.5 inches, choose an additional 2.5" HDD with 7mm thickness. There are drives with 9.5mm thickness which can't be fitted nicely.
You may install m.2 - PCIe NVMe type SSD. Typically this model is shipped with NVMe SSD as a primary storage, so you may need to replace it, not adding it.
No it's not. All you need is a standard precision screwdriver. The most important thing is that you MUST completely turn off the laptop before even open the case, and you MUST unplug the cable from battery connected to the motherboard before trying to upgrade. It is also helpful to have plastic disassemble tool because if you use screwdriver for unplugging the battery cable you may damage the motherboard by accident.
No, I don't, and never used it. It is totally up to you. Using screen protector may protect your laptop screen from minor scratch, but I think it is not necessary unless if your laptop is 2-in-1 or yoga style.
Yes, possible to replace WLAN card. see my other Video. ruclips.net/video/c-osg0FC3Ao/видео.html 4GB onboard with mine. Maybe different in other region.
I disconnected the battery to update the ram. When I turned it on, it doesn't recognize the battery and it's only on if I have it plugged in. What I can do?
Up to 8GB module is officially tested, and confirmed by Lenovo. Anyway, it is highly likely to work up to 16GB, because it is technical max. limit per channel. I even heard someone installed 16GB successfully. Anyway I recommend you to try with memory module from well-known brands such as Samsung, Crucial, or Teamgroup.
@@svijaykrishna1097 You can find compatible RAM module from Crucial website. www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/lenovo/ideapad-s340-14api#memory 2400, 2666, 3200Mhz models are all supported.
2 or more modules with different capacity works flawlessly. Technically, only 4GB of a 8GB module will be work as dual channel mode along with soldered 4GB onboard ram, but in real life usage, you won't feel any drag. It is always better to have dual memory setup for any CPU with GPU core integrated, especially AMD.
I bought one of these but it didn't have the memory soldered, it had a 4gb module in the upgradable slot. It's weird because it's the same reference as yours.
That's weird, According to the official reference list, there are only 2 setups for the memory. '4GB Soldered + 4GB DIMM DDR4-2400 for expansion slot' or '4GB Soldered only' I think you bought a 8GB ram model with 4GB module already installed. You can check your total memory capacity from task manager(ctrl+shift+esc) > performance tab > memory section.
@@gyuhangcho2584 No, it only had 4 gb of ram and I had to change the ram module to a 8gb one due to poor performance on games , it's prety weird that they done that because task manager still shows 1 of 2 slots being used, so they didn't soldered a module at all.
Typically this model comes with NVMe storage, and 4GB Ram soldered only. So, you can expand RAM with 1 empty slot. For storage, either you can install 2.5 inch SATA SSD or HDD with 7mm thickness, or even replace NVMe SSD. There are some 1TB HDD with 9mm thickness, so be careful. it can't be installed.
It depends on specific models. You need to check with the seller. Usually it is 512GB NVMe for Lenovo stock model, but still there is a chance that seller exchanges low capacity NVMe with larger capacity SATA SSD.
Hello, i try to upgrade my S340, i try to add SSD. Because, i think, i do not disconnect my battery, bios has lock, laptop can not be open or charge. Service unlock the bios and he work fine now. Somebody know how can i hard reset the bios? Not from hole from left. Like bios battery disconnect.
First, you need to verify how your 8gb is setup. It could be 8GB soldered with blank RAM expansion socket, but also it is possible to have 4gb soldered and 4gb module inserted to the RAM expansion socket, the latter is the more likely setup. Opening up the laptop will give you definative answer, but if it is too much trouble for you, you may try apps like CPU-Z to check in advance. In case if you have 4gb soldered, and 4gb module. you need to consider switching existing 4gb module with either 8gb or 16gb module.
You need to lookup PSREF Lenovo website with your laptop's model code. psref.lenovo.com/Product/Lenovo_Laptops/ If your laptop is Ideapad S340-14IWL, I think it has same design, 1 NVMe and 1 SATA.
That is totally possible, but you need to consider this. If your S340 is equipped with NVMe, you can simply add any type of 2.5inch SATA drive you need, HDD or SSD. But, you MUST check the thickness of your 1TB HDD before you install. This laptop only accepts 7mm HDD or SSD for its SATA bay. Most 2.5 inch hard drives are 7mm nowadays, but still there are 9.5mm hard drives. for example, HGST 1TB or WD black 1TB are 9.5mm. these models can't be fitted to the s340.
@@ashokvardan7387 This laptop has 1 x NVMe slot and 1 x 2.5inch SATA bay. So if you want to use SSD+HDD, you need to use 1x NVMe SSD with 1x 2.5inch SATA HDD. Of course you can use both together. Booting with NVMe, and installing softwares on SATA HDD is also totally possible.

If you are in the US, I recommend to buy it from Amazon.com, search 'phone repair tool'

I don't think the plastic latch of the laptop is too delicate, but it is highly recommended to open it gently with plastic tools that I used. As long as using the right tool, it should be okay.
For your specific model, I think it should have one 2.5 inches SATA bay empty to upgrade.
Any laptop with empty 2.5 inches bay for upgrade, it should have required mounting bracket included.

Does anyone has battery problem with above notebook Ideapad S340-14API eg. battery unable to hold charge, or battery lost power very fast ?
I can think of 3 possible reasons.
1) degraded battery : if you have used the laptop more than 1.5~2 years under very harsh condition (=meaning charging/discharging frequently), the battery may be too degraded. check battery cycle, and estimated capacity.
2) if you connected anything to the power charging port, it will drain out internal battery even the laptop is off. disconnect all USB peripherals, and test again to verify if this is the case.
3) This laptop has an battery indicator function even if the laptop is off. if you are using key skin, it may press keys to activate this function without you knowing it. enter the bios (or UEFI) and turn off the function and see if it helps.

hey nice vid, can u tell me if it has the digital pen within the box?
I hear that upgrade this laptop with 8gb single ram will disable the dual channel mode. Is it true? And what consequence ill get?
@@gyuhangcho2584 thanks for ur reply. Can I ask another one? How to activate dual channel mode on this laptop? Is it active by default?

@@gyuhangcho2584 I have a samsung evo 850 ssd. Do you happen to know if that is a 7mm drive? Also is upgrading the battery to a bigger battery possible?
Is it possible to add a HDD or is there no support?
In this model in specify, can we put a m.2 ssd?
You may install m.2 - PCIe NVMe type SSD.
Typically this model is shipped with NVMe SSD as a primary storage, so you may need to replace it, not adding it.
Does this notebook support dual channel?
Do you need a ground or special screwdriver to use it internally? I don't want to short my motherboard, done it on my macbook before -_-
No it's not.

Opening up the laptop will give you definative answer, but if it is too much trouble for you, you may try apps like CPU-Z to check in advance.
