Enjoy watching the videos. Going through my IFR training now and sometimes finding the right wordage is the hardest part when dealing with ATC/FSS. Great job explaining and learning from our experiences.
If you have an account with Leidos that includes your aircraft data, the ICAO information will be available to the FSS specialist when you call them with your tail number. You then will only need to provide data for the route, altitude, ETE, fuel, and souls on board.
First and foremost tell your Dad thank you very much for his service! If it were I, and it was not so you did what you as the PIC chose to do and it all worked out and it was a safe and successful flight period and that’s all that matters. I would have utilized ForeFlight, the Windy app, or other sources to see what were the forecast of cloud layers along your route even though it looked to be perfectly clear. I file IFR on the ground a lot of the time even on clear days because things just happen sometimes. That frustration in flight is something we don’t need to deal with and it was even hard for me to watch because I know just how irritating it is because I’ve been there. Great video as it helps all of us get better and learn so thank you for sharing!👍
FSS is archaic. I too am a product of the magenta line/ForeFlight, and I try to avoid dealing with them if possible. Don’t get me wrong, they provide an excellent service, but newer technology makes things so much easier. Great video. Best, Cary.
that did seem a bit needlessly complicated but I can understand why they do that. still titering on should i start working on my cert or not... instrument rating is something I want if i do start training, but just seems so far away at this point.
Could you have filed an IFR flight plan using foreflight at the time? If internet is required, could you have used your phone to create a hotspot and sign on with your ipad and file with Foreflight during the flight? The called FSS to open it?

Very good video! Thanks - I think filing before hand is a good idea!

@todkapuz... Do it!
File IFR all the time on cross country. Safer. Great practice. Use to to file that way prior to technology. We get spoiled.
Ditto on the ICAO equipment abbreviations. 😂👍
Great video. PLEASE turn the music down!
I love this about IFR pop ups or call FSS ? Can you get a pop up IFR clearance to get on top to VFR ?
yes, you could cancel on top or go VFR on top which keeps you on an IFR plan

no internet to file via phone/ipad in flight. Pretty remote area.
I've had good luck filing aloft from ForeFlight on my cellphone... ruclips.net/video/qwdArVqlL9s/видео.html
Love it
