  • "Jenny Wren" is a song from Paul McCartney's 2005 album Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. Was written in Los Angeles, and is about a character of the same name from Charles Dickens' novel Our Mutual Friend. It also refers to a bird known as the wren, which is reported to be McCartney's favourite. McCartney wrote the tune in the same sort of finger picking style found in "Blackbird", "Mother Nature's Son" (The Beatles) and "Calico Skies" (Flaming Pie).

Its a personal opinion, and everyone will have their own favorites which I respect, but when I think of what I consider his greatest compositions, not just from his solo career but also from his Beatles days, this song gets a nice high ranking (and I am not an easy customer.) The twists of this vocal melody set against this guitar part is a HAUNTING bit of genius. It's one thing to learn to play it, its another to be the original creator of it out of thin air. Very nice live performance. The original version of this song from the Chaos & Creation CD is a sweet treasure.

Jay Spangler Very nice perspective. Paul had said the song derived from chords he played with George, that consisted of the beginning of a Bach piece. Which also had influenced Black Bird.

This brings so many memories! I had the immeasurable honor to be the Armenian duduk player who played/recorded in this song with Sir Paul, in the original recording... God's amazing blessing!!... we recorded it at Ocean way Studios, on Sunset Blvd, L.A. & we did it in one take. I truly do not know how I feel about hearing my duduk lines --one of the most expressive instruments in all history-- played on a MIDI accordIon/controller, triggering a duduk sample... still, I Love this SUPER GRNIUS!!! God bless him!!

I gave this song to my girl. Her name is Jenny. Yes, if you look at it, it can be translated random ways and moments in all one's life.
With this song I have seen each moment all the way through remembering stories she'd tell me in ernest. What it comes down to, is that she has had a beautiful heart all along the way through hardships. And now, once again, as she realized who we are together, her weary walls have fallen away, the mending she never thought could mend and catching up on the life with the love she always knew existed. This song is beautiful as it describes her heart.
    Thank you, Paul.

This one is so beautiful it's even hard to express with words, and the accordion solo is heavenly. Unfortunately, I think this is the last of Paul's signature stirring songs as of today, coz his latest album didn't give us anything as beautiful as this one...
