  • Earlier this year I met a wonderful couple who I later learned were building a tiny house in the Sacramento, CA area. I offered to lend a hand with the build and ended up not only working before the video crew arrived but also well after. I had a ton of fun and took a few behind the scenes shots while helping build this awesome tiny house. Enjoy!

    Great build. What type of interior paneling did you guys use?

    • @1lifejourney
      @1lifejourney  9 лет назад

      +Tiny House Chattanooga The interior paneling was finish grade plywood that we cut into 2ftx4ft strips and then finished by coating with linseed oil.

    I like the size of the tiny house. I find some of the tiny houses actually claustrophobic instead of small. I think 250 -300 feet is a reasonable size. You can get street legal trailers large enough to construct a 300 square foot size tiny house upon :) The only thing I find is a bit of a design flaw to me, is the inaccessibility of the front porch area from inside of the tiny house :( There needs to be a side door access. Also, the size of the front porch is great, but, perhaps slightly overkill. If you took 15 inches less and pushed the kitchen (?) out the extra distance into the front porch area, and built upon an extra-wide trailer base, then you could have a couple of feet more of width as well :) As is, it is still very roomy in appearance. What's the deal with the video crew ? Were you shooting for TV broadcast ?

      Personally, I'd say 150-175 square feet not including a separate sleeping space is the absolute minimum, with 200-225 being a more comfortable minimum. Anything 250+ is great until you start making it so big it defeats the purpose and starts becoming a regular house again.

      +rikkiesix It depends how much of the build you want to do yourself. This house cost around 45k when all was said and done. The house we are currently working on will cost around 75-80k. Most of that comes from the finishes that were put into the house. A lot of custom one off materials that the home owner wanted. The trailer alone cost almost 14k. This is an example of one of the more expensive homes that we have built.

      +1lifejourney The biggest problem is that you can't put these houses anywhere. It's the same problem with trailers. You have to pay $600 per month on trailer park rent. At that point, you should just buy a regular house.

    My husband and I are really looking forward to moving into a Tiny house. From what I've seen, I would definitely like to have a house no less than 24 feet long. Preferably 26 or 28 feet long and with what I want and ALL solar I expect it will cost anywhere fron $35,000 to $66,000. I hope someone can get back to me. Because I have many questions. I need to know, for instance, can we get WIFI? Can we have just Solar? I want 2 lofts. I want a compost toilet. I want a bath and shower combo. I want windows that look like they're Tiffany designs. I want to look out and no one look in.. Exactly what kind of a vehicle do I need to pull it? Can I have a REAL closet? Those type of questions. Please help? Thank you.

      You'd need something in the range of an F350 or F450 range truck to tow that. If you went 20 feet long or less, you could probably handle it with an F250 range truck. You can certainly configure a place to run on JUST solar, a bath and shower is definitely possible in that size range, IDK about Tiffany windows, you can probably find one-way glass, though, or electronic darkening glass, but that stuff's expensive. A REAL closet? IDK, do you mean a standing closet? A walk-in? A pull out?
      I'm sure I can draw up some designs and go over options. I've researched this stuff enough to practically start my own company building and/or designing them, the only problem is getting myself situated and funded. Hit me back if you wanna know more and can give me your definition of a 'real closet', okay?
      Also, an alternative idea to lofts would be to have 'wolf dens'. less worrisome ingress and egress. Ask me more about that if you want, too.

    how much is the highest sq ft you can go on a a tiny home??how much would coast hear in southern california?

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 8 лет назад

      I'd say anywhere from 600-800 square feet with 3-4 separate sleeping spaces is about as big as it gets before not being a tiny house anymore. Up to about 1400-1600 square feet would still be smaller living depending on the amount of rooms and sleeping areas again given the 'average' house in America is 2500-3500+ square feet.

      Thanks...but the lofts and ceiling/roof heights DO count. How much is the square footage including that space, and the front covered porch as well?
