I'm sorry, but we all know how TR-8R's wappity wappity stick was powered...
By pure force of LOYALTY.
Amen
+Spore6001 It's not a wap stick, he's not a goblin.
+Spore6001 TR-8R's loyaty gives you DETERMINATION
+Spore6001 so it's an element of harmony??
+Kendrick Taylor FAPPITY FAPPITY FAPPITY
Because Science explains Vibro Blades from The Old Republic
And training sabers! (since you fight multiple opponents with actual lightsabers using a training saber)
+Tallacus its not science, its made up cortosis weaves and mandalorian metal
both those things block lightsabers
luke V hence, SCIENCE!
La Nausée oh big ass electrical currents that could kill a rancor? dont think so
its a vibrating kendo stick with again i would assume echani weaves
in SWOTR its long after KOTOR and we know all those swords were lightsaber resistant with echani weaves or cortosis ore
+luke V
You know, it always annoyed me a bit how common those weapons were in KOTOR. Even Tusken Raiders could block lightsabers, and they make their weapons out of junk they find it the desert.
Might be why Lucas decided to ban all sword-like weapons capable of blocking lightsabers, since he felt it cheapened them. Not sure how Disney will handle it, but I actually approve of that decision even though it made the fights with the commando droids in Clone Wars a bit silly.
Unfortunately tr-8r (officially fn-2199, or "Nines") dies.
HE DIED FOR THE SPINS
He might of lived idk though
+Dylan W no, he definitely died. Han shot him and they checked his body
unless he can be revived via the power of internet fandom!
2199-2100=99 9/9= nines 9*11=99 right in the feels, may he rest in pasta.
You really do put together a great program. I have always loved science, physics and quantum mechanics...and in the past trying to find something that is informative yet entertaining was rather difficult. So I must applaud you and your team. Way to go. As someone who intends to become an educator I hope I can keep to my instructing as fun as you do.
+inkednpierced4u53 Thank you so much! That means a lot to me.
He died for our spins
... *slow clap*
***** oh crap, didn't notice. Thx bud
If Anakin could survive having his balls dipped in lava TR-8T would have no issue with a puny blaster bolt.
Alien Platypus nah, he's definitely dead...
***** "fan service" lol
*HEY!* didn't the Magnaguards for general grievous in revenge of the sith fight Obiwan and Anakin with electrostaffs?? it's the same thing with the Z6 Baton
Man, shame TR-8R got blasted by Han back in the second act...
+FN-2199 Han got what he deserved ;-;
+Swedish Joey Han Wasn't even loyal
No he survived the shot
I believe that stormtrooper armor is pretty strong. When hit by an average blaster shot, the armor absorbs the blast and desperses it throughout the rest of the body. But this usually knocks out the trooper in the process. So they aren't usually dead (but an KO'ed person on the battlefield is just as good as a dead one). But that may not be the case with the new trooper armor as it has changed since 4,5&6
rip in spaghetti he died for our spins
i love the hand drawn neon coloured asthetic. really makes this show stand out and have its own identity compared to other science shows on youtube. keep it up guys
Hi Thor how's the science going?
+Leighton Gore Aside from having to pause for the occasional ice giant ass kicking it's going good. -- KH
+Nerdist
2 questions:
1: Is the mind-hacking from the Matrix(learning to pilot a Huey in 5 seconds) possible?
2: What do you think are the chance any of your 3 kids showing in Ragnorok?
That sweater is gorgeous.
You can get it at H&M. My brother and my got a pair.
Okay, this is an interesting theory and all, but if this is how a lightsaber can bounce off of a baton, how do you explain how a lightsaber bounces off another lightsaber?
+The Ponyville Critic Another lightsaber would have the same magnetic field. It would repel in the same way, though depending on the blade orientation, it could also "stick"... -- KH
+Nerdist This is why blade slide doesn't happen in lightsaber battles, either they repel and you can't keep them near enough to each other for long enough to do so. Or, they stick to each other so hard that you can't push one down the length of the other or at least I think that is why.
i have a theoretical answer. at the core of every lightsaber is a crystal and each crystal refractive and reflective properties is different since they are naturally grown. this could mean every single light saber beam has a slightly different wavelength and different polarity
+Nonae Renada Nice triple post. I agree with your theory, it seems logical. Differences in focusing crystal could very well lead to a difference in the magnetic field required to make the plasma beam.
+dragonshardz sorry about the triple. Was on my mobile and it said the comment wasn't posting.
Wasp Newtons?
+skildren Because ... yummy.
So this is how the shwartz was twisted in the fight between Lone Star and Dark Helmet. Their blades had a similar magnetic field orientation.
That was actually a much better explanation than I thought. (I didn't know where you were going with the repel attract thing.)
This is the type of guy who measures each mini wheat before putting it in his bowl.
Re the end of this video: I just bought fig bars yesterday. Earlier this year a wasp nest formed INSIDE the outer wall of my house near my front porch. We couldn't get close enough to stucco the hole until the weather got cold enough to make the wasps sleepy. There were several days where I had to fend off wasps just to get in and out of my own house! The idea of eating wasp jelly in my fig bars is a way of celebrating my victory against those beasts. Scrumptious! Thanks Kyle!
Did you just ruin figs for me?
It doesn't happen to every fig, just a few of them. And they're well checked, so don't worry.
+Spartan3457 Dammit. I was hoping by eating figs I could get delicious revenge on those little flying bastards.
In the fig varieties that do this it is not a matter of checking as the wasps are dissolved into the fig. There is nothing to check for.
but not the larva muahaha
I love figs and this fact doesn't bother me at all.
Electromagnetism? THat means Magneto can manipulate lightsaber energy.
+Johnny Lee not really magneto can dissipate the magnetic field containing the plasma which means burning the jedi/sith using it to death and that shit is pretty brutal XD
yes if it is made of metal then it could be used that way but blowing a plasma compressed blade in ones face is more epic
+Johnny Lee Actually I think he can just control metal. If he controlled magnets his powers would be A LOT different.
+Zenith Wills No bro. He is called magneto cuz he controls magnetism as well. That's why he levitates and flies and shit. Cuz of the earth's magnetism. I'm sure that if he was strong enough he could move a planet lol
Chris Figueroa But that isn't how magnets work.
Kyle, give me a scientific explanation of how a character with hardly any screen time and maybe a couple of lines becomes so popular? Because I find this whole TR-8R thing to be totally ridiculous, and I have no idea why people find him so intriguing!
The tr8r guy was actually a friend of Finns while they were both storm troopers, it's explained better in the prequel comics for the force awakens
THANK YOU!!
It's really ridiculous.
It's really ridiculous.
+Rami Ungar It's because he is one of the only characters in the entire star wars franchise to stand up and nearly defeat a jedi, and of all people it's a storm trooper, famous for being cannon fodder.
Love these videos, cuz theres nothing better then to make this stuff real in people's minds. Now, while scientifically, this is pretty much the best explanation out there, there is one thing I havent seen mentioned concerning anti-lightsaber weapons. Cortosis people...cortosis. Not scientific, but in the Star Wars universe it is mentioned that cortosis is a highly conductive material that causes lightsabers to be repelled or even short out for a micro second.
Is it just me but. . .hopes thatTR-8R [FN-2199] didn't get killed off at the end of that scene but just lives and comes back in the next movie?
I understood every word you said. . .AND I LOVE IT!
THE X IN THE CIRCLES MEANS FIELD LINES GOING INTO THE PAGE........ NOT OUT XD
Kyle is the Cisco of Nerdist! love this videos keep up the good work!
It's not trademark it's tr-8mark
+Xtremely Cute NO!!!
That excitment towards the end was awesome
TR-8R is FN-2199, or nines. Just so you know.
A little mistake - at 1:42 the magnetic field lines are actually drawn to be moving away from our faces. It is correct when viewing from your drawing perspective though, but if it's the perspective you chose, then it's drawn incorrectly at 2:44.
I really like the tip my teacher taught me - dot represents the tip of the arrow and the arrow is flying towards me. Cross represents the feathered part of arrow and that's what I see when it is flying away from me.
So what if two Jedi are fighting? Wouldn't their lightsabers' attract each other?
This is definitely my new favorite episode.
His real name is nines
+BoringMan no, Nines was a clone
+zingy1914 You're probably thinking of Fives
+zingy1914 that was fives and I'm sure he's dead
omair khalid nicknamed nines
+BoringMan FN-2199 (Nines) is also known as TR-8R. The one that died was FN-2003 (Slip).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in that case, wouldn't light sabers be attracted to each other?
+Dustin Ouellette ....Sometimes. Makes it way more suspenseful. -- KH
No, all physical impact is actually electromagnetic fields colliding
+Nerdist how about how does the dead space plasma cutter work
At about 1:50, X in a circle is used to denote a vector going into a plane, not out. A few seconds later, you chose the wrong direction for the circular path of an incoming charge (assuming the field was pointing out as you said.).
I'm sort of hoping that Captain Phasma becomes the new Boba Fett in later movies
Captain Phasma sucked
she did nothing except betray her comrades to protect her own life
she's a real traitor
TR-8R should kick her ass
You mean an incompetent clone of the galaxy's most incompetent bounty hunter who's other clones become the poster children for cannon fodder? :P
"Electromagnetism, that's the real Force"
That's it, that's the only thing i needed to start making electromagnetic gauntlets
"Blaster weapons are basically useless against lightsabres, um, Order 66, the jedi were slaughtered with soldiers using Blasters, just saying.
There was a bunch of them shooting the guy all at once. Movie style "lets shoot one at a time" though is completely ineffective as well as is what happens in most of the movies hence the assumption. That's called a bad screen play in my opinion

+Aaron Gonzalez if the battle is one on one then lightsabers will win. However, overwhelming numbers will be your downfall. Ants can take down a spider with overwhelming numbers but if an ant is fight a spider alone, it sure to die.
Oh my god... The fuck just happened? I posted 19 times!!!
The magnetic field from 1:30 till 2:00 points in the wrong direction, the crosses mean, that the field goes into the backgroud, not trough the screen
The baton might have cortosis in it which 100% blocks lightsabers.
+SkiniNinja It actually depends on how much cortosis is in the blocking object. But pretty much yeah.
Sereda Hawke True true.
SkinyNinja its not cortosis, as it actually shorts out lightsaber.
You mean vibrosteel? ;)
SkinyNinja it's simply said electricity like blasters and such. And I no for all nerds dat blasters go whit gas. Every energy weapon we have seen blocks or gets blocked by lightsabers because energy blocks energy. So it's not cortoses. Not mad just saying ☺ This got a lot longer dan I expected 😫
At about 1:29 mark, when explaining the Lorentz force the illustration of the B-field is a little off. To audience, crosses mean the field is pointing INTO the screen, not out of it.Dots should be used to illustrate the field pointing out of the screen.
At 3:10 first stop of using right-hand rule, put left hand in a pocket. I wonder if these errors are caused by writing on glass on the other side.
in your world in asgard magic and science are one and the same. right Thor?
Only RUclips show other than Honest Trailers where I stick till the end.
Really love this show.
P.S. - I started watching it just yesterday and I am hooked
and I will never eat a fig again
+maeel7 Only natural figs would be a problem. We fertilize most of the figs we eat ourselves, without the need for wasp jelly carcasses. -- KH
+Nerdist I'm still gonna be thinking of wasp carcasses every time I see one now xD
+Nerdist and I was excited for some wasp jelly :( Wait a sec... you could make a video about insects in regular food
what an awesome sweater. the force is strong with this one.
As a totally straight heterosexual male, damn you lookin' fine Kyle
I pretty much imagined it was almost exactly what you said but a small change, in that I figure it either flips polarity super fast so both seem constant and then stops on whichever repels the lightsaber in question as I'd imagine they're all different and probably have lefty and righty fields to them. On the other hand I figured maybe the user decides and tunes it in as he uses it, kinda like fine tuning a scope on a rifle or whatever. Just my thoughts!
why is this guy so hot?*_*
+sempribo Because Genetics. -- KH
almost forgot: #nohomo ;D
+sempribo too late :p
+sempribo Because he's a bearded Steve Duda.
+Nerdist I was going to say because science but that works as well
You explained why lightsaber and lightsaber-like weapons collide very well but I just wanna mention that the most likely culprit is that the weapon was laced with cortosis which is the metal that is traditionally the most resistant to blasters and lightsabers.
But what if the saber hits the baton in the other direction? I guess the light saber would be stuck to the baton, right?
So, win win?
+Bram Kaandorp Exactly. Everything would have to align perfectly for this to actually work. But it could happen. -- KH
I shared this video with my physics teacher, because my test next week is about electromagnetism
"TR-8R is the new Boba Fett. He's a Storm Trooper that scary and one that actually knows how to use his weapon..."
except Boba Fett isn't a storm trooper. and in the films he never actually does anything to warrant the reputation he has.
+Xander B Finally I'm not the only one thinking that Boba Fett is famous for no reason at all!
He has 8 minutes screentime on episode 4,5,6 ffs. And 13 minutes if you add him being a kid at episode 1,2,3
xxAlx he has like, 3 lines one of which is "AAAAAHHHHH!" as he gets bumped by a blind man and his jet pack just breaks. I hear he gets some cool stuff in the Extended universe that's no longer canon
Mr420Spy it was Han who bumped into him wasn't it?
+Xander B Also Bobba had that 7 minutes of cartoon in that Holiday Special that really no one talks about due to Creepy Wookie Fantasies.
Rabid Dingo that never happened shut up
"SUPRISE LIGHTSABER" Gets me every time when I least expect it. It is a surprise lightsaber after all
wait! if when their magnetic fields "meet" they repel each other, bcs their magnetic fields are opposites, how come lightsabers deflect each other if theirs are the same?? anyone have an answer for that? +Nerdist
+Peter Phillips The Jedi and the Sith sabers have opposite magnetic spins (in some cases coinciding with the colour difference, as the natural green, yellow and blue crystals have a opposite charge to the synthetic crystals often used by the Sith, which manifest plasma in the red/maroon/purple spectrum); also, since Stormtroopers are outfitted to defeat Jedi they have their special weapon spinning the same way as the Sith sabers, but don't have the same colour because they are not imbued with the negative energies of the Sith.
+Alex Pope Ahhh ok thanks
+Alex Pope +Peter Phillips but didn't anakin and obiwan for example duel with same coloured light sabers? i think the original question is a good one, and remains unanswered, at least for me.
+Ilkka Heikkinen Yes they did, that is a very good point
+Peter Phillips Because fiction. If they repel when they are spinning opposite (because currents are flowing in the opposite direction), then they'll ATTRACT when you turn one around to face the other way, as you would while fighting.
Which doesn't address the question of what happens when they meet at a 90 degree angle.
i legit watched every because science videos in one sitting..i regret nothing.
I love figs.. even more so now mmm
I have an Idea for a video you could do. The seismic charge. I also have an idea on how it works.
The charge deploys a decaying force field that contains an acoustic medium. This allows for there to be sound vibrations that can violently vibrate apart objects that pass the force field.
I think you mean "anti-bitch stick"
small note: 1:40 the crosses indicate that the fieldlines would be going into the screen, not coming out of it
Hello Thor.
0:42 A wild Menudo appears!! ¡No te reprimas! ¡No te repirmas!
HI,This is very interesting and cool. What you said about light sabers, is it really possible to contain plasma in a magnetic field and is there any evidence of it?
+Imru I Yep! Check out this device called a tokomak: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokamak It contains rings on plasma with giant magnetic fields. -- KH
+Nerdist Thank you, so it might possible to make a light saber or a lazer weapon in the future.
+Imru I He will likely say theoretically, which is short for "not in our lifetime".
+KageRyuuUji oh really. but it might be possible 1 day. lol
+Imru I Theoretically, it is. But it might not end up very practical.
Dear Nerdists you guys are the best ive seen all your vids
Question: If the magnetic force around the plasma is the same in all light sabers how do they deflects eachother
To bad his real name is FN2199
+thepandaprodject But he'll always be TR-8R in our hearts.
Tom Leonard Of course
+thepandaprodject They seem to be trying to push "Nines" as his nickname.
W4yN3 N3r0 Yup
Kyle pls do a video about the force and pls tell me what you are working as cos I wanna become a scientist like you you are awesome
but... but his name is FN-2199... :|
But he's TR-8R in our hearts though
How could someone remember his real name ? lol
+Star BrickFilms well Finn's is FN-2187... I remember that
+Juan Saldivar He is TR-8R in spirit
We saw similar Batons by General Greivious's Droid Guards in Episode III
Does Yoda smoke weed??
Geeze, I saw 10 seconds of this and I already subscribed.
Meh. To bad he's dead
+brigham bentley Not necessarily. The stormtroopers have changed quite a bit in the new trilogy. They're good with their weapons and are actually good fighters. Can you say for certain that his armor didn't protect him and he was simply knocked out?
Mr4theLulz1 Maybe but it looked like chewy's blaster pierced his armor.
brigham bentley
True, but that doesn't necessarily mean the bolt kept going. While the armor broke, in the act of breaking, it still could have deflected the shot, or changed it's trajectory enough that it might not be fatal. Still, experience tells me that there are no such things as flesh wounds in the Star Wars universe, unless it happens to one of the main characters. So, TR-8R probably is dead.
+brigham bentley There is a hole in his chest
Lane Montoya Yes holes in chests usually kill people.
The more likely reason is that the weapon is lined with cortosis, which can block lightsabers due to its unique properties. It was an EU thing, but was brought back into canon in one of the novels that's a lead up to the recent Star Wars Rebels cartoon series, as the big bad's cyborg armor has a cortosis mesh in it.
"Trademark." Had to pause the video was laughing so hard.
This is what science class needs to be.
Quick question: The blade of a lightsaber is theorized to be a stream of plasma that is bounded by an electric field. If you present a device that would otherwise interrupt that field, say TR-8R's baton, wouldn't coming into contact with that cause the blade to lose its integrity and shoot plasma everywhere? Just a thought; I kinda just hoped on board in the middle here lol.
Another great episode.
+Aero of the Cosmos Thank you so much! -- KH
this is litterally helping remember stuff for my physics exam on monday...
This episode made me giggle more than any other.
Should've been Captain Phasma kicking ass with that beauty. But hey, she'll be back!
need more of these
I was expecting a surprise lightsaber, but I was still surprised when it happened. :D
Scifientifically, love it lol.
Aren't the magnetic field lines at 1.40 going into the screen and not out of it? With the whole arrow sense?
I always enjoy these.
This explains why I love figs! Delicious wasp-y goodness!
Star Wars: Where the most overlooked characters who show up for like, 3 scenes are the most beloved.
This is an awesome video! TR-8R is really cool
This might just be my lack of understanding of magnetic fields, but wouldn't the baton only work if it contacts with the lightsaber at predetermined angle? Say if the field was tuned so it would block the blade when they struck each other perpendicularly. But if it's tuned this way and the baton and lightsaber connected at more of a angle to each other, or somehow parallel with each other, would they get stuck together, or would the lightsaber then melt through the baton?
It's made of the same material as the Magnaguard's Electrostaff from Revenge of the Sith, Phrik. It's a very durable lightsaber resistant metal much like Beskar. Basically it's an electrostaff made like a tonfa or nightstick. No need for a drawn out examination.
+CassDaMan1138 Like I said, I think it's pretty cool if the baton could work scientifically, because then it definitely works in the Star Wars universe! -- KH
+Kyle Hill.....you were having way too much fun with this lol.
Well it could do that, but I want to add to it. It could be made of Cortosis, which is highly conductive (Helping to make a stronger magnetic field, and it is already lightsaber resistant, able to take several hits before being cut, and this means that it could be used with the electromagnetic field to keep it from ever being hit by a lightsaber, and if it was it would be able to take it.
Is that why figs are juicy? How tiny is the hole, because when I pick them off my fig tree they look pretty solid to me. Is it so tiny I just can't see it with the naked eye? Or did you just make all that up at the end?
Much more simple. The new order tech is running of Kyber Crystals what Jedis use in light sabers, as is in Kylo-Ren's saber, normally sith would have used synthetic knock offs. But the New Order has come a long way in tech since the Empire. It's a Kyber Crystal powered stun baton (Because lore/logic)
His real name was revealed in the prequel book Before the Awakening as FN-2199, nicknamed "Nines". The reason Nines singled Finn out and attacked him so aggressively is because he trained with Finn.
I'm reading the prequel books!
There's a argument about a moving portal moving towards a stationary companion cube. Will the cube fly out the other side? Or will it just stay stationary? Thinking as if a portal can be moved
Now i want to go and get some natural figs and a tiny little spoon to try and see what wasp jelly tastes like and if i can ingest enough to build up a tolerance to it.
Today I discovered you, Kyle Hill. Brilliant! :)
Light saber tech AND wasp jelly? It doesn't get any better than that!
Hahahaha "Sci-Fientifically" hahahahaha.
Love this guy.
As always very entertained
Xs are for field lines or charges moving into the screen.
The explanation that's given is the Z6 Riot Control Baton's energy (blue laser in between the two points) is able to form a lightsaber resistant field along the baton, giving the metal "lightsaber-resistant" properties though it is not actually able to fight back against a saber.
4:26 actually Nines/TR8R was part of the FN corps led by Captain Phasma not Kylo Ren.
