      You know, it always annoyed me a bit how common those weapons were in KOTOR. Even Tusken Raiders could block lightsabers, and they make their weapons out of junk they find it the desert.
      Might be why Lucas decided to ban all sword-like weapons capable of blocking lightsabers, since he felt it cheapened them. Not sure how Disney will handle it, but I actually approve of that decision even though it made the fights with the commando droids in Clone Wars a bit silly.

      I believe that stormtrooper armor is pretty strong. When hit by an average blaster shot, the armor absorbs the blast and desperses it throughout the rest of the body. But this usually knocks out the trooper in the process. So they aren't usually dead (but an KO'ed person on the battlefield is just as good as a dead one). But that may not be the case with the new trooper armor as it has changed since 4,5&6

    Okay, this is an interesting theory and all, but if this is how a lightsaber can bounce off of a baton, how do you explain how a lightsaber bounces off another lightsaber?

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  8 лет назад +118

      +The Ponyville Critic Another lightsaber would have the same magnetic field. It would repel in the same way, though depending on the blade orientation, it could also "stick"... -- KH

    • @somethingfunny9402
      @somethingfunny9402 8 лет назад +31

      +Nerdist This is why blade slide doesn't happen in lightsaber battles, either they repel and you can't keep them near enough to each other for long enough to do so. Or, they stick to each other so hard that you can't push one down the length of the other or at least I think that is why.

    • @nonaerenada
      @nonaerenada 8 лет назад +16

      i have a theoretical answer. at the core of every lightsaber is a crystal and each crystal refractive and reflective properties is different since they are naturally grown. this could mean every single light saber beam has a slightly different wavelength and different polarity

    • @dragonshardz
      @dragonshardz 8 лет назад +1

      +Nonae Renada Nice triple post. I agree with your theory, it seems logical. Differences in focusing crystal could very well lead to a difference in the magnetic field required to make the plasma beam.

    Re the end of this video: I just bought fig bars yesterday. Earlier this year a wasp nest formed INSIDE the outer wall of my house near my front porch. We couldn't get close enough to stucco the hole until the weather got cold enough to make the wasps sleepy. There were several days where I had to fend off wasps just to get in and out of my own house! The idea of eating wasp jelly in my fig bars is a way of celebrating my victory against those beasts. Scrumptious! Thanks Kyle!

    Love these videos, cuz theres nothing better then to make this stuff real in people's minds. Now, while scientifically, this is pretty much the best explanation out there, there is one thing I havent seen mentioned concerning anti-lightsaber weapons. Cortosis people...cortosis. Not scientific, but in the Star Wars universe it is mentioned that cortosis is a highly conductive material that causes lightsabers to be repelled or even short out for a micro second.

    At about 1:29 mark, when explaining the Lorentz force the illustration of the B-field is a little off. To audience, crosses mean the field is pointing INTO the screen, not out of it.Dots should be used to illustrate the field pointing out of the screen.
    At 3:10 first stop of using right-hand rule, put left hand in a pocket. I wonder if these errors are caused by writing on glass on the other side.

    I pretty much imagined it was almost exactly what you said but a small change, in that I figure it either flips polarity super fast so both seem constant and then stops on whichever repels the lightsaber in question as I'd imagine they're all different and probably have lefty and righty fields to them. On the other hand I figured maybe the user decides and tunes it in as he uses it, kinda like fine tuning a scope on a rifle or whatever. Just my thoughts!

      +Peter Phillips The Jedi and the Sith sabers have opposite magnetic spins (in some cases coinciding with the colour difference, as the natural green, yellow and blue crystals have a opposite charge to the synthetic crystals often used by the Sith, which manifest plasma in the red/maroon/purple spectrum); also, since Stormtroopers are outfitted to defeat Jedi they have their special weapon spinning the same way as the Sith sabers, but don't have the same colour because they are not imbued with the negative energies of the Sith.

      +Peter Phillips Because fiction. If they repel when they are spinning opposite (because currents are flowing in the opposite direction), then they'll ATTRACT when you turn one around to face the other way, as you would while fighting.
      Which doesn't address the question of what happens when they meet at a 90 degree angle.

    I have an Idea for a video you could do. The seismic charge. I also have an idea on how it works.
    The charge deploys a decaying force field that contains an acoustic medium. This allows for there to be sound vibrations that can violently vibrate apart objects that pass the force field.

      True, but that doesn't necessarily mean the bolt kept going. While the armor broke, in the act of breaking, it still could have deflected the shot, or changed it's trajectory enough that it might not be fatal. Still, experience tells me that there are no such things as flesh wounds in the Star Wars universe, unless it happens to one of the main characters. So, TR-8R probably is dead.

    The more likely reason is that the weapon is lined with cortosis, which can block lightsabers due to its unique properties. It was an EU thing, but was brought back into canon in one of the novels that's a lead up to the recent Star Wars Rebels cartoon series, as the big bad's cyborg armor has a cortosis mesh in it.

    Quick question: The blade of a lightsaber is theorized to be a stream of plasma that is bounded by an electric field. If you present a device that would otherwise interrupt that field, say TR-8R's baton, wouldn't coming into contact with that cause the blade to lose its integrity and shoot plasma everywhere? Just a thought; I kinda just hoped on board in the middle here lol.

    This might just be my lack of understanding of magnetic fields, but wouldn't the baton only work if it contacts with the lightsaber at predetermined angle? Say if the field was tuned so it would block the blade when they struck each other perpendicularly. But if it's tuned this way and the baton and lightsaber connected at more of a angle to each other, or somehow parallel with each other, would they get stuck together, or would the lightsaber then melt through the baton?

    It's made of the same material as the Magnaguard's Electrostaff from Revenge of the Sith, Phrik. It's a very durable lightsaber resistant metal much like Beskar. Basically it's an electrostaff made like a tonfa or nightstick. No need for a drawn out examination.

    Well it could do that, but I want to add to it. It could be made of Cortosis, which is highly conductive (Helping to make a stronger magnetic field, and it is already lightsaber resistant, able to take several hits before being cut, and this means that it could be used with the electromagnetic field to keep it from ever being hit by a lightsaber, and if it was it would be able to take it.

    Much more simple. The new order tech is running of Kyber Crystals what Jedis use in light sabers, as is in Kylo-Ren's saber, normally sith would have used synthetic knock offs. But the New Order has come a long way in tech since the Empire. It's a Kyber Crystal powered stun baton (Because lore/logic)

    The explanation that's given is the Z6 Riot Control Baton's energy (blue laser in between the two points) is able to form a lightsaber resistant field along the baton, giving the metal "lightsaber-resistant" properties though it is not actually able to fight back against a saber.
