  • Watch our overview video on Romans 5-16, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Romans, Paul shows how Jesus created the new covenant family of Abraham through his death and resurrection and the sending of the Spirit.

Got challenged by a pastor to read Romans. I'm an atheist who didn't grow up religious. I'm a good enough reader to know the bible is filled with words used differently than how I use them and that I don't understand the context of the bible. So I came here for an overview before diving in. I've got a super cool journaling bible and I'm writing notes in it along the way. It's not my goal to become Christian by any means, please don't misunderstand. I just wanted to say that your videos are appreciated in what may be unexpected quarters. Thanks bible project guys!

When I got saved, I didn't expect or desire to be a Christain at the time. However, I wasn't an atheist at all, I was raised in a Christain home, I just didn't want to be a Christain at that time, but God finally got me to wake up and then he saved my soul! God always knows what it takes for us to come to him and man oh man he sure did with me! And I'm thankful for it! I'll keep you in my prayers!

Probably my favorite book of the Bible because it shows the core of what being a Christian is all about. Even today, there are divisions in churches based on worship differences that aren’t essential to the core message of grace, and Paul tackles that very issue in Romans by saying that “who are you to judge the servant of another?”

The rest of the days in a week, I give a more personal and practical reflection on the content. But Bible Project videos has been essential in giving a comprehensive view of the Bible books we examine in school. Your comment is an affirmation that we made a Godly decision in using TBP videos. :)

How can you know and understand what the gospel is if you don't read it for yourself? Let every man work out his own salvation. You must stand in conviction as to why you believe it is that you do... how can you do that if you've not read for yourself? Every man shall give account of himself to God. What are you going to say? You didn't want to read Gods word? How can you be so sure what the gospel is? How do you know these people have interpreted it correctly?

I think one beauty of the gospel isn't that God causes us to triumph over evil, but that He causes us to triumph in spite of evil. Paul lives this out fully. For every seeming defeat, he channels his efforts into breaking through in other areas. Thank you, Paul, for showing us how to not be overwhelmed by the evil devices of the devil.
Thank you, BibleProject for this wonderful summary.

I absolutely love your videos. I am a very visual person so this shows such profound concepts in a way that I remember. I appreciate your talents and the way you are using them to glorify our Savior. Only one suggestion. Sometimes it may be better to put the sentences in all at once instead of lettering one letter or word at a time. I find myself concentrating on what the visual is writing that I lose what is being said and have to go back and listen instead of viewing. Does that make sense? I get a little distracted and dizzy, have to close my eyes for a moment. But that may just be me. Again, these are fabulous! So very good. Thank you for blessing me.

      ISAIAH 45 - ROMANS
“Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’?” (Isaiah 45:9)
      WORDS BY: JESUS
"The world consists of two images - those of the image of the Former and those of the image of the reformer. My Father is the Former of mankind and the devil is mankind’s reformer. The devil cannot create but only contort which is why when My Father said, “Let Us make man in Our image according to Our likeness,” that became the enemy’s dread and it has been his duty ever since to twist and corrupt that image. Your duty as a believer is to make sure this doesn’t happen and make sure you are being renewed day by day into My image. The path of least resistance, where you do not find yourself striving against My hand, is the key to allowing Me to mould you into My image. Resistance to light was the cause of Lucifer’s fall and it becomes yours when you choose denial. Remember that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess My name either in this life or the next. You must view confession as the agreement of your heart not the words of your mouth; for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. What you confess now makes a difference in which image you are being moulded into.
There are many things the reformer will do to stop you growing spiritually. The answer to this is found in both Isaiah 45:22 and Romans 10:13 - Look to Me and be saved for whoever calls upon My name shall be saved. Make this your confession. From whatever trouble you face know that I am your answer and I will lead you to the path of victory. As long as you look to Me and not strive with Me, you will be transformed by the renewing of your mind as I will gladly mould you into the image of your heavenly Maker."

Jesus wasn’t just “a human who lived in faithful obedience to God.” Yes, He was flesh. But, He was God manifested in flesh. Jesus was/is the physical manifestation of God. Jesus is God.

Question: if being a physical descendant of Abraham did not necessarily make one a member of the covenant, in what sense are those who are ethnically of Abraham (but who also reject Jesus) part of God's covenant people?
I'm asking in relation to what Tim said during the ch. 9 & 11 sections.

@@MultiTacs They didn't avoid those things - they justy mentioned them briefly (not using those exact words, but explaining the concepts). However, they also didn't get bogged down in those topics, as if they were the main point of the book.
I don't always agree with their interpretation of things, but often it's just that they are saying the same things in different ways, using language that people outside (or new to) the church will underrstand.

That was a wonderful video, I do feel it just a little miss leading the way that it was said The Sabbath which specifically refers to a commandment from God which existed from before the giving of the ten commandments to Israel as compared to what Paul actually said which was in reference to ceremonial Sabbaths which Moses gave. I think that there is a distinction to be made because out of the entire ten commandments written by the hand of God, that was the only one which we all where specifically asked to remember. Just voicing that concern although I realize that you don't want to make it a denominational issue which I do respect, I just find it a little miss leading.

I'm still confused, do we follow the laws of the Tora or is that done away with?

    • @shakirathompson763
      @shakirathompson763 7 лет назад +1

Walt Manuel Walt Manuel I am a little confused by your comment. First you say that God gave Moses the 10 commandments plus the rest of the law and that only the ten were documented at the beginning and Moses documented the rest before he died.
Then you say that everything that Moses wrote is the traditions... That only the Ten Commandments are to be kept.
You mentioned Deut 6:4 the Shema, which is what Jesus said is the first greatest commandment, the next is to love your neighbor as yourself (the whole Torah hangs from these two commands). That proves that all the commands in the Torah were given by God. So the 613 commandments is God's law... Not just the ten...
So based on your contradicting comment, we are to keep most of the 613 commandments, I say most because it is obvious we don't have to keep the priesthood and sacrificial laws. Jesus is the high priest now... But we are to keep the rest, like eg. Don't sleep with your fathers wife, or your brother/sister in law etc... There are purity laws like not touching a dead body, or not eating unclean animals and goes on... That is also to be kept... Jesus did not only kept the 10 commandments, he also kept everything that applied to him under the 613 laws...
It is also important to know that the Jewish people have two sets of laws 1. The written Torah (first 5 books of the bible, yes that includes the 613 commandments that people deny)
      2. Oral Torah which is said to be the traditions and interpretations of the elders... Now days is known as the Talmud... Eg they have over 1k laws on how to keep the sabbath Etc
      Shalom

If you are hurting people and not offering love, then you are not following God's commands. It's as simple as that. The Torah was something given to the Jews to keep perfectly. If they failed to keep it perfectly, there were procedures put in place to makeup for those failings (animal sacrifice). That option was made obsolete in 70AD. It is now impossible to keep the Torah perfectly. It has been superseded by a new covenant that was predicted in the Old Testament.
Keep in mind that this letter to the Romans was written around 55AD when the full Torah was able to be kept by the Jews. The Gentiles had no obligation to follow any other than Christ. The Jewish believers in Christ were still obligated to follow The Law until 70AD.

    • @AndreColon
      @AndreColon 7 лет назад +3

I disagree...scripture teaches that the Law is VERY valid for today [more so than ever] ... Remember the 2 greatest commands? ...are not new AND they come from the Law not commandments. Also whenever you read these laws, they come from the voice of the Almighty not Moses.
      >>Lev 11;1 And יהוה spoke to Mosheh and to Aharon, saying to them.... you get the point. >Lev 20;7 ‘And you shall set yourselves apart, and shall be set-apart, for I am יהוה your Elohim,>Lev 20;8 and you shall guard My laws and do them. I am יהוה, who sets you apart.>> Acts 21; 21 --->>>24, All of Romans!!
In fact one of the missions of Christ was to GLORIFY the law
      >>Isa 42;21 It has delighted יהוה, for the sake of His righteousness, to make the Torah great and esteemed.

[Christ Came to Fulfill the Law] not you
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
      Romans 10
4 For [Christ is the end of the law] for righteousness to everyone who believes.[b]
*Although the Greek word for "end" (telos) can mean either (1) "termination," "cessation," or (2) "goal," "culmination,""fulfillment," it seems best here to understand it in the latter sense. Christ is the fulfillment of the law (see Mat 5:17) in the sense that He brought it to completion by obeying perfectly its demands and by fulfilling its types and prophecies. The Christians and Jews is no longer "under the law" (6:15), since Christ freed him/her from its condemnation, but the law stills plays a role in his life. He is liberated by the Holy Spirit to fulfill its moral demands.
Note: In the Old Covenant it's all about yourself performance [self-effort], your own works.
In the New Covenant it's all about Jesus (Yeshua) fulfilling all the requirements of the law. So look toward him, follow him, believe in him, receive him, and focus on him. He is your TRUE TORAH. You are guided by the Ruach Haqadash (Holy Spirit) to help you walk in Jesus (Yeshua) footsteps. You have to receive the baptism of Ruach Haqadash (Holy Spirit).
When accepted Jesus into your life God the Father, Jesus and the law are written within your mind and heart.
      prophecy
      Jeremiah 31:31-34King James Version (KJV)
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
      Ezekiel 36:26-27King James Version (KJV)
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
      Fulfillment
      Hebrews 8:8-13
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
      Romans 8:1-4King James Version (KJV)
8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

    • @AndreColon
      @AndreColon 7 лет назад +4

El Yah yup, notice how the law still remains? christ fulfilled his part of "messiah" - luke 24
Everything wasn't fulfilled, we still are without the king of Israel psalm 110
if Christ came to fulfill the law ,meaning to do away with them after he died and resurrected, then why does he tell people to continue "to observe and teach the commandments and you will be called greatest in heaven" the next verses after?
also why do his apostles still observe the laws all in the book of Acts?
Also another, is "do as they say, not as they do" look up why?
then the whole book of Isaiah testifies to the servant and his reign on Mount zion with the law for every nation.
hmm Lastly, if the prophecy of the new covenant as said in jerimiah 31 has "fully" passed, then we should all be observing the law from our hearts without any one teaching us, right?
reread your letters from Paul as letters to people not cherry pick verses. I promise context will prove the Law given to Moses will ALWAYS be perfect.
