- Donkey Kong's Dark Secret | Retro Mysteries - This 1981 smash arcade hit is one of the most beloved arcade games of all time and was the springboard for Nintendo’s eventual domination of the video game market in the 1980s. It was also Shigeru Miyamoto’s first time being the head designer for a game, but there is a dark secret to its development that seems to be a topic Nintendo doesn’t like to talk about. And I can’t wait to share that secret with you in this video. Let’s get started. #DonkeyKong #retrogaming #darksecret

Wow! That’s a crazy discovery dude! How am I just now hearing about this?
Dude I know right? I am glad I clicked that super script beside Nintendo R&D1 cause it led me down this rabbit hole lol.
Because the internet wasn't around back then to tell us this. And I'm pretty sure the lawsuit didn't hit American TV news back then because Japan is very big on privacy.
@@GenerationGapGaming You want a dark secret about "family friendly" Nintendo I got one. Its pretty well known that Nintendo started as a playing card company (mainly hanafuda cards). What is not as well known is that the name Nintendo (when each syllable is translated) may have been a wink/nod as being a "safe haven" of sorts to their customer base at the time, which were believed to have been mainly gamblers with heavy ties to the Yakuza. Hanafuda was a game of gambling and had been illegal only a few years prior to Nintendo's creation. Nintendo also got involved in the sex industry. They did other cards outside of hanafuda, including poker cards. Of those poker cards, Nintendo had dabbled from time to time with making nudie cards. And this would not be the limit to their business in the sex industry. As Nintendo began to branch out into other fields of business, like toys and hotels (before finally settling on video games as their bread and butter) they briefly ran what is known as a "Pleasure Hotel" or "Love Hotel" where Japanese business men could discreetly take their prostitutes and/or have prostitutes provided to them.
It is worth noting that Congo Bongo and Zaxxon were also mentioned in this video, both of which were Sega's hits at the time. I never realized how significant ITC really was until now.
Also Congo Bongo used an upgrade of the Zaxxon hardware.
Read it as Donkey’s DANK secret. Immediately clicked.
Awesome video Sir!!! Could this explain why Donkey Kong 3 was nothing like the first two, as Nintendo couldn't reverse engineer anymore because of the lawsuit?
Thanks so much dude. Now I'm gonna have to go research DK 3 lol. I was never a fan of DK Jr but I do love DK 3.
@@GenerationGapGaming Sweet, I've always wondered why they removed Mario from DK3, more so why they never used Stanley ever again.
That's why until its release on the Switch- we had never seen a release of the Donkey Kong arcade franchise on modern systems! They only had the rights to the NES counterparts!
You are correct!
Donkey Kong was ported to a whole lot of other systems than the NES: ruclips.net/video/BSxXwJVkZT4/видео.html
DK64 has original Donkey Kong game included.
M1XART Yeah it was in DK64 but technically Rare wasn't allowed to do so. In fact they weren't provided with the rom by Nintendo and instead someone from Rare admitted at one point they downloaded the rom from the Internet.
@@M1XART so does the original animal crossing
Man, I never knew any of this. I vaguely remember the Popeye connection but all the other stuff....insane. Goooooooood stuff!
My jaw hit the floor when I found it cause I thought I knew everything about DK!
So here is the deal, Nintendo should have put in the original contract that they own the source code of the game. There is nothing wrong with paying another company to do work, but again just make sure that you are paying them to own the game you want contracted out. If ITC was to own the games source code then what did Nintendo pay them for? Sounds like they just didn't work out a good deal at the start, but also Nintendo didn't know how successful the Donkey Kong game was going to be so once the game became a favorite then Nintendo had a different "deal" in mind I suppose.
I'm sure they would have had to pay more.
Dawg Nintendo just screwed them. But that’s not good enough? ITC made the game and didn’t get a cent of profit. Then they waste money on court fees, and still only end up getting half? That’s good business or shady? Which one? But I get it you need money. They made a great game and get no money but the people you help make billions of dollars and they get famous and all this and that off of your work? Man your cool bro I would love to hang out with you
this is some story btw...i had no idea there was this much legal battle in this game. We are talking MILLIONS of dollars here and one of the biggest games ever...timeless...
I know man this story shocked me too!
A video nicely done yet again! Love watching your videos man! You do a great job! I never knew this about Donkey Kong! That’s crazy! But like you, I am glad things worked out the way they did!
Thanks so much dude. Always appreciate the support. The story to the top in business isn't always the cleanest lol
I knew a lot of companies worked together on multiple titles back then, but Nintendo used shady practices to assume all assets. The same also for Atari and the Lynx handheld.
Another terrific video! I've been playing Donkey Kong since its release, and had never heard any of this!
Thanks man! I'm the same way. I love me some DK and thought i knew everything about it's history until this!
Very interesting indeed mate. Thanks for the share. Never really been into Donkey Kong, but did a arcade challenge on it the other week. Loved it so much I want a DK cab in the living room. Always class video mate. 😉
Donkey Kong is definitely one of my all time favorites. Number 2 arcade game for me personally. Glad you enjoyed the video man.
Good job on all the research you do GenGapGaming.
mullet boy in the lock on donkey kong junior! at about 4:33. also, very neat information! I knew they had many legal battles before but I never knew about this particular one. thanks for the video! see ya next time!
You're welcome for the video Jonny! You found mullet boy too!
Love the Billy Mitchell reference, lol.
that "squish" sound effect is straight outta Earthworm Jim. good callback on a history vid!
sweet video I'm a retro gamer and I didn't know this you just earned a sub. keep up the good work
Wow! Great video as always dude. Very informative!👍
Thanks so much man!
Good work on pulling that stuff up it’s something to add to gaming history and love the console you playing on 👊🏽
Thanks man!
i forgot all about your channel, love your stuff!
hey man m great video as always. I was completely unaware of this story. thanks for sharing in such a creative video dude. like you I am glad things worked out the way they did or we might not have some of the great experiences as gamers today. shame things went down the way they did however.
My thoughts exactly William. I was shocked with how it went down, but I just can't hate Miyamoto or Nintendo lol.
Amazing stuff. Great video.
Great Video. Very informative. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much Mikey! Happy you enjoyed it so much
Great video, Tyler! I learned something today, And learning is half the battle...Yo Joe!
Sorry...that just poped in my head.😅
Btw...love that Voltron you got in the background when playing that tabletop. 👍👊
Thanks as always man. Yeah I love that Voltron. The kids and I had a blast building it. I probably had the most fun though lol.
awesome video! Thanks for sharing! Not a huge fan of the OG Arcade DK, but none the less I love finding out some new gaming lore I didn't know. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words Jake!
Amazing work!! Thank you!!
Really interesting thanks. And what a classic game.
...awesome video..i learned a lot!
Loved the video brother! I never knew any of that!
Yep, this is why you never saw an arcade port of the game because of licensing/IP issues. Finally it’s on the Switch via Arcade Archives.
Yes sir! I really enjoy the switch version. Great to have the original on the go.
Amazing video thank you
Very interesting video, thanks :)
LOVE THE CHANNEL & THAT BACKGROUND MUSIC 🏆
Thanks dude. I love this music too. I used it in my Friday the 13th video too!
@@GenerationGapGaming HELL YEA I REMEMBER 😃MY CAPS ARE NOT YELLIN, I JUST CAN'T SEE THE TINY TEXT 😆
Once again, excellent video. You should have more subscribers.
Thanks so much Chris. You are too kind my friend!
interesting stuff man, thats crazy. . Love the video
Thanks so much MegaDan! You the man!
Damn......didn't know this. Great investigative journalism!!! Just goes to show "never meet your heroes"
Yep lol. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
That was a great video. Learned something too. I vaguely remember that game Congo Bongo you mentioned. Was it a NES game? Thanks again.
I remember now. My cousin had it for his coleco
Yeah it was originally for the Arcade, then was ported to other systems. But I would say that personally the SG1000 port is the most comprehensive port that's the most fun. For some reason with all the other ports, it seems like the developers were so locked into the mindset of maintaining the isometric view that they were willing to sacrifice level design and content for the sake of proving capable graphics. The SG1000 port from Sega on the other hand decided to dial things back to a 45 degree angle that's more 2.5D-ish if that makes sense by today's modern standards, to take better advantage of limited memory in favor of maintaining all the levels and content. Give it a shot if you haven't and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
You're right there were many ports of Congo Bongo like on the 2600 and Coleco, but it was originally an arcade title from Sega. Glad you liked the video Jeff.
Criminally underrated channel you do great work brother . It shows in your videos how much hard work you put into this I appreciate it
Thanks so much Marvin. Very nice comments about the channel and I really appreciate it.
Love your videos and animations, Tyler.
I appreciate it man. I try hard to make each video better for everyone. Hope it brought a smile to your face.
Sadly, this is probably one of the reasons we rarely ever see any official, accurate releases of the other pre-Donkey Kong Nintendo arcade games.
Wow! Some serious digging there. Great job!
Thanks Anthony. It was fun research!!!!
These videos are great. Your research and all the vintage footage is spot on. What is that cocktail arcade game you have
Thanks so much man. The cocktail cabinet I have was one that has 60 classic arcade games on it. It was a Black Friday deal at Sam's Club about 5 years ago.
@@GenerationGapGaming do they play smooth like the actual arcades. Or are they scaled down alternative like home versions. I know you know what I mean.
They play extremely well. Just like the arcade experience. Highly recommended.
Much love for Kong. Spent many quarters and days trying to beat it. Dark secrets makes this still a gem in gaming history.
I remember spending so many quarters playing Donkey Kong ..😊👍🤘
Glad to see ya again man!
You too Big Rudd! Great to hear from you man.
Thanks for sharing
Good episode!!
I love your channel man! Wondering if you ever watch GGG boxing haha he is the man
You talk about stuff I never heard before this is one of the reasons why I like your channel not the only reason cuz you have a good channel but this is exciting I never heard this
Thanks Nate! That's why I was excited to make a video about it cause I have never heard anyone speak of it before!!!
Surprised nobody has ever made a DK hack featuring Popeye characters.
Numba1 Heathen there is a Popeye game that’s like donkey Kong
@@jokerproduction5135
Yes, the "catch the hearts" arcade classic. Love it, even the Colecovision version.
Numba1 Heathen yeah and their is a kangaroo game lols
@@jokerproduction5135 Yep! By Atari, clobber the monkeys and save the baby at the top.
@@scottakanumba1heathen379 Kangaroo was developed by Sun Electronics (later known as Sunsoft). It was imported to the U.S. by Atari.
I actually think I remember just a brief something of that ages ago... when I was a kid. But since I was a kid, it was garbage in and garbage out...
Great video! Very interesting!
Thanks so much dude. I couldn't wait to share this video with everyone!
Loved the Punch-Out shirt and the Donkey Kong info was fascinating
Awesome my friend as usual!!!
Thanks so much Jimmy. Great to hear from you.
Would have never had known! Great detective work, that tabletop DK you own is sick!!👍 Wonder how many other big players did he same🤔 countless perhaps. I loved me some Popeye back in the day!
Thanks! And my cocktail arcade cabinet was a Black Friday special from Sam's club about 4 years ago. I love it!
That was really exciting to hear
Great video Tyler!
Thanks TJ. I think your other comments had some RUclips glitch and it won't allow me to comment about mullet boy but you found him second! Shout-out next video!
😉😂😂
Great video. Keep it up.
Thanks so much man!
Never know this about Donkey Kong, thank you for this nice little info! I knew in the 80 outside contracting for game development without giving any credit to said company was kind of the norm (heck, it still was up to around the 2000 and even still is a form of practice). ITC (Ikegami), like many outsource companies, sucked at making contracts most likely and I am sure never had a royalty stipulation somewhere. They got a lucky break Nintendo tried the reverse engineer the game making them be able to have a case to take to court.
This probably wouldn't had stop any of the things Nintendo continue to do (or Miyamoto). Back then his name associated with games wasn't huge except internally and the Nintendo name was the important association with the game been made.
Well put man. Great comment Carlos!
I played Donkey Kong arcade when playing Donkey Kong 64.
In that game on the Nintendo 64, you had the first RARE game called JetPack and the original Arcade version of Donkey Kong.
I knew that Radar Scope is one of the games that was a quiet success in Japan but a massive failure in the USA market and thus needed to replace those cabinets with a completely different game.
ITC was one of the companies that was behind the programming of many of Nintendo arcade games I believed considering this was the normal practice back then in the early 80s before gaming become larger than it was predicted to be.
I wonder who was the original programmer for PacMan that was credited by Namco?
Every game has a story behind it. This is well done as usual. 😎
Thanks Mark! Always appreciate the support buddy.
I love it , I love it. Great work. Thanks for the content.
You're welcome Ryan! Thanks for the support.

I always wonder if Nintendo owned the original source code for donkey Kong. Now I know. Thanks again.

This game is a definite classic I want to try to buy an original arcade cabinet if I can find it
What arcade cabinet are you playing on?. I have been researching some for purchase...

It was a 60 in 1 cabinet I bought on a Black Friday sale at Sam's Club about 5 years ago. Thanks so much for subscribing to. Good to have you here at G3!
A Retronauts podcast discussed this years ago covering Sega arcade games - Ikegami also had a hand in developing Sega's Zaxxon and Congo Bongo.
Yep! I spoke about Congo Bongo and Zaxxon briefly in the video. Didn't hear the Retronauts podcast episode though. I will have to check it out. Thanks!
4:32 I SEE YOU
Yep lol

I didn’t see the video post, busy day at work. But yeah I caught this on one my first run.

very interesting story, also I found mullet boy, he appears right at the 4:31 mark. I know I'm not the first but it's always fun to look for him!
You found him man! Glad you like to find him.
off topic, but where did you get that mike tyson everyone has a plan tshirt? great quote i believe in reference to tony mandarich if i remember correctly
This is one of the main reason there's a missing level to almost all the of the Doneky Kong home ports like the missing pie level and I knew about this long ago.
Why is the pie level missing on the home ports? Was it a coding or licencing issue?
Wow, I had no idea. This was some amazing research on your part. I cant imagine the world without Nintendo. Landscape could have been vastly different. Id love to see a video from you on the issues with sony and nintendo on the disc accessory that never came to be and how it created the ps1.
Thanks man! Yeah the Nintendo PlayStation. I will have to see.....
@@GenerationGapGaming Awesome, I hope to someday see it on the channel!
Beer Bourbon and Games - Yeah, the gaming landscape would have better vastly different. Maybe Atari would have had a comeback, Sega could have been the Nintendo we see now, but more Arcade focused? Sonic would not have existed or at least in that form. Remember, Sonic was born out of Mario; color scheme and speed. SONY PlayStation might not have existed, or in that form. XBOX could have been the SONY we see now.
Motion controls would not be where it is in gaming. Handhelds would probably have looked different. Maybe Neo Geo would have dominated. Who knows... Nintendo is definitely a HUGE and important player in the gaming industry and I can not see how the industry would be without Nintendo.
@@NYCJoeBlack I agree 100% it be awesome to do an alternate reality series.
I love that Tyson shirt
Thanks man! It's one of my favorites!
Like always, the secret sauce for success contain a bit of crime.
4:44 the 1983 conversion for Japanese yen was 237.55 yen to 1 US dollar, so 580 million yen was around 2.44 million US dollars - quite a massive difference from what you’ve stated.
Well those numbers came from an article I found about Donkey Kong that had legitmate sources for back then. I tried my best lol
I watched the cash dropping section of the video in slow-mo thinking you would put MB onto a $ during a 1/4 second piece of video :)
Lol that would be great but it's tough to perfectly line up MB in full motion video.
Subbed
I heard the DK arcade game included in DK64 is actually not a port using the original code, it's a remake due to legal issues. Same for the NES home version. The Switch Eshop/Arcade Archives version is said to be the first time the original game code was rereleased perfectly & legally. So it's nice Nintendo & Hamster could finally rerelease it.
Is Donkey Kong anyone else's favorite coin-op of all time like me!? Solid video btw. I give Two Jump man way up
Donkey Dank. The hidden secret.
Cool
Love your Punch Out shirt!
Once again 🔥😏
CALLED IT! Great video Tyler. See ya buddy.
Yep you nailed it Stuart!
I thought it was because King Kong. Not a complete rip off of some one else's tech!
Very interesting! The game was too difficult and expensive for me. I play all the spin-offs though. Isn't it interesting how the creative process works? I guess businesspeople do what they do.
Vocal track needs more treble so the audio is more audible at lower volumes. Just a tip.
That would explain why the distance between the joystick and the jump button were so far apart; and I play cross handed so just imagine how hard this game is for me to play. Even with that handicap, I was able to get to level 19 with 824,000 points. I’m sure if the buttons were closer, or god forbid, if the joystick was on the right side instead of left, I could score 1 million or at the very least, get a kill screen.
Radar scope... Nintendo DID reference this. In the gameboy camera! And just any TRUE Mario fan should always know about Mario and popeye.
Good scoop!!
Thanks man! Fun to make this video.
Many if not all publishers prefer to hide these kinds of facts. Of course if they PAY for it they can whatever they want!
