Most of the audience have no idea that Nicholas Pettas (older guy) was a fierce and fearless K-1 (professional marshal arts) fighter standing against far bigger champions and other world class peers. A kind of legend in Japan. Anyway the golden rule regarding fish & chips is that you must start eating it within 60 seconds of it being out of the deep fryer. You will not be disappointed insofar as this rule is met particularly in Japan where fish of all kinds with sushi-grade freshness is available wherever you go.

It's just past 10:00am in the UK, Playing this video I really want fish and chips! The Hobgoblin looks like a chain of pubs in the UK called Wetherspoons, the pubs are named after interesting places and events in British history. Glad to see that Cider is beginning to make his way into Japan. I live about 30 minutes away from where Thatchers is produced in the UK (Somerset) it's nice to see it featured. I'm glad you enjoyed the Great British staple that is fish and chips, the fish batter sounded fantastic! Yet another great video!

Fish and chips used to be served in newspaper, it started in the second world war because of paper rations, but by the mid 1980s it was decided it was unsafe for the food to come into contact with newsprint without a greaseproof paper liner. Nowadays they're mostly served in plain paper. I think some places used fake newspaper wrappers for a while? I miss it, I remember the smell of newsprint blending with the vinegar adding some extra aroma to the dish.

18:56 as a brit who has been making fried breakfasts for 30 years rule 1: pls always fry the bread in oil, dont toast it in a toaster, rule 2: use peeled tomatoes, rule 3: after some cooking, get the oil which has already cooked the bacon and peeled tomatoes and use it to cook the fried toast. the oil should be red from the tomatoe, that bacon oil mixed in the tomatoe juices will create the yummiest fried bread youve ever had.

Wow, really interesting to see the Hobgoblin! It was literally a pub in central Oxford, the sign outside with the green colouring and yellow lettering looks just like the Oxford pub had as well! The pub is still open today but it's been renamed as the St Aldate's Tavern, I assume because they dropped the Wychwood partnership. Cool to see the name survives in some way. Also, as someone from England I especially appreciate 15:49 with "Now you can get your bollocks in a bottle"

The fish and chip place we grew up going to (town in Ontario Canada) used actual newspaper. It’s the only place I’ve known that uses real newspaper. Been to other decent places but they use food wrap printed like newspaper. ITS NOT THE SAME.
Hobgoblin looks like the pubs we go to here. And I’m a cider girl. My friend also loves cider. It’s big here in Ontario. We have a bunch of craft breweries that do cider and there’s craft cider brewers. One in Toronto is very good, brickworks.
My grandfathers English breakfast growing up (in England in the country in a small village) had the egg, tomato and the toast fried in the bacon grease. Which sounds like the greatest thing ever.

@@JunkFoodJapan It's definitely the taste of home. My son moved to New England from the UK, and he's got a stash of proper baked beans for his fry ups. Hasn't found anywhere doing Sunday roasts in CT, though they do have a local chippy that's not too bad. So he does his English breakfasts and Sunday dinners at home from scratch (aside from the beans!).

Two absolutely enthralling personalities coming together to captivate and entertain the Japanophile's of RUclips... I love it, even more than the fish and chips in that second joint you frequented (and a tad more than the first...yuck).
I also loved Nicholas Pettas' Blue Eyed Samurai book, which I read to my kids, chapter by chapter, as a bed time story... inspirational to day the least (as was Judd Reid's version)....
I will certainly be dragging my arse out of bed to get on down to the bookstore to purchase a copy of Abroad in Japan, first thing in the morning... or maybe the afternoon, depending on how long this exquisite bottle of Caribbean spiced rum lasts and when my evening draws to an end...

You can't beat British fish and chips. It's a skill to create fish and chips, that's been developed over centuries.
Freshly cooked, now that's a serious YUM!
[Edit] OK I'm genuinely impressed with the HobGoblins full English breakfast, roast dinner, and fish and chips.
