Manitowoc Minute host, Charlie Berens goes on a family vacation to the Northwoods of Wisconsin where he offers to go fishing to catch dinner. After coming up empty, Charlie raids the freezer where he finds some Sitka Salmon, Halibut and other fish to save the day and still put a fish fry on the table.

I grew up in Holland MI. My grandfather and father fished often, very successfully. Then doing laundry once, mom found a receipt from the local seafood fish store. Busted.

The fried perch to go were the best. I grew up on Lake Macatawa, but wouldn’t eat anything that swam in it. 😝

I’m picturing a Midwestern fish store, called “The Lake”. They only do cash and do not print receipts. They keep some stuffed fish around to take photos with, and only stock local varieties...
I'd shop there! I never catch fish when I promise it. Don't forget the beer.

I absolutely love our fish frys. Half the fish doesn't make it inside cause we all stand around the fryer and eat it right away.

Everytime I go to Wisconsin to see my grandma...gotta have me some Spotted Cow while I go fishin on the Rock River. Then on way back to Illinois gotta stop at Culvers for amazing as cripes cheese curds and burger.

Small town rural Illinois have WALLEYE special on Friday night. I don't recommend it unless you like bottom feeder yuk fish of unknown origin. Recommend the ribs,, don't ask me how I know. 😥

We do have fish frys but they are typically at churches that dont have good hours for the public

My family is no regular wisconsinite for fishing they rage and cuss every time they lost a fish and my dad yanks the fishingpole so much when he gets a little bite that the boat almost tips over

A few years back my buddy brought his boat that was at his Michigan place for about a year. He was too hungover so I took it out. About an hour later I saw a mouse 🐭 appear from the stern. Flicked it out into the water and looked away and heard a splash. No mouse. Well eventually the whole damn family came out and each one only lasted about 30 seconds until they disappeared with a good size blowup. I learned something that day!🎣🎣
I love when his dad is featured. You can hear in every syllable that he lost his last bit of patience and hope years ago and is just runnin' on pure IDGAF juice right about now. He's seen it all and is tired of this shit.

Charlie, you named a lot of Alaskan fish there...I’ve caught many, just look at my pic. Feed the family all winter with some tasty smoked salmon to boot. Come up and I’ll teach whatcha do.oh by the way I ran out of freezer space and it’s a separate freezer!
BTWays I lived at ole Hayward Lake in Hayward WI as a 6 - 7 year old. My brother worked at the farm-bar/steak place down the highway. If I was going to live anywhere else in America besides Alaska here it would definitely be Wisconsin!! I loved it there. Except the ticks. As a kid I always had ticks. But I landed here at 8-9 in 75. And never wanted to leave. Except for Hawaii here and there.

Scott Bessemer. Do you remember the old life boats that would take you from Macatawa Park out to the piers (they weren’t connected to land then) to fish for perch with a long cane pole and a bobber? My dad had a small boat that we would take to Lake Michigan and fill up a 5 gallon bucket with perch in two hours.
I like that the fry was actually panfish.
Luckily for me, there is a grocery store on the way back from the lake that happens to have perch, trout, and catfish

I live in Ohio now, but I introduced my husband to the Apple Holler on I-94 in Sturtevant one visit up to Wisconsin, and he fell in love. One time, we were up visiting on a Friday, and at dinner there that night, almost everyone at the table ordered the fish because it's Friday, and this is what we Wisconsinites do (even us Baptists have to get in on Fish Fry Fridays!). My husband, normally a big eater, was shocked when the older lady family friend who joined us out-ate him on the fried fish and then told him that what she ate was nothing compared to some people the real fish fries she's been to!
This is why I wait until I have caught a whole mess of fish to plan my fish fry! 😂😂😂 of course here in the South its usually blue cats
