Hmm, oddly, I wouldn't have thought of that. I just always think of him as having a very consistently great channel with tons of useful information and tips.

Great comparison as always! It's very helpful to hear how ON, OFF, and AUTO sound under all these very different situations. I haven't experimented with these settings at all to be honest, i usually don't use the sound from my GoPro so i just had it at off but i think i'll switch to auto now👍

Possibly go for an accessory? I know there was a foam piece that fit over the 5-7 series, is there one that can go on 8? Honestly I wouldn’t use any of the internal mic audio. I have microphones I hook up to my GoPro with the adapter, one of them wireless, both really cheap, but still good.
Great test, great trials. I did not find that much of a difference between the 3 modes, ON,OFF, AUTO. Each mode had a distinct difference to them. I think it depends on what your doing to set your mode for optimum performance. But in general, I would also say AUTO for all around.
As others have said, auto seemed to be consistently the best (not always tho). I find the differences between the cameras video (and audio) qualities curious. I'm assuming that they were all setup identically except for audio setting but colors and saturation seemed to vary, sometimes widely. Thanks for the excellent comparison! Auto it is by default for me going forward.
AWESOME comparison. Just got the Hero8 and put it on a Losi db xl-e. Looks AMAZING but the WIND was TERRIBLE. I think from what I saw I will be putting it on Auto. My wife is deaf and has a cochlear implant in one ear. Subbed. Actually sent from Flying 90 from a Hero8 wind talk.🤜🤛💯🙏✌️
Did you know that if the wind is really bad you can get those little microphone beard thing to help, also love your videos keep up the good work as always.
Hi Mic. I haven't seen your videos for a while, so welcome back if you haven't been on. Or maybe it is because I have just realised that I hadn't subscribed (ooops). So now its done. Great video but I found myself reading the writing you put on, on each video playback 3 times haha, so what a muppet I am. I have the gopro fusion 4 and the gopro hero 4 (both second hand as I can't afford new) but these videos make me want to get an 8, so maybe sometime soon. I also have the hero 2 but the housing just makes the audio crap (as does the four for underwater videos). Only thing that I have seen and not happy with on the 8 is the built in brackets (which is wobbly but then you can still get the case holder) and the glass/plastic lens cover that can't be removed and replaced as it is permanent, so if you scratch it, it is an expensive fix, so that is another thing that is putting me off saving up for one. Great videos though and keep them coming. Just went to click the subscribed, and it was already subscribed Derrr LOL.
Did not hear that much difference between all settings. Maybe there is a little advantage when turned on or auto. But not that much that I think about upgrading from my hero7 to the 8...
@1:38 to @1:58, you will hear popping and static noise from OFF and AUTO mode, not in ON mode, these popping sound happened on my Gopro 8 since day one and happened on many Gopro 9. Today, no fix from Gopro yet so I will only use ON mode.

AUTO seems best overall, even underwater. It reduces background audio distraction & focuses on desired sounds...

Great video Mitch. The Auto mode seemed to be balanced and could be the safest bet as the default option to be kept.
I just brought a hero 8 black, partly because of your channel and videos :) I love my go pro!
I would say auto at most scenarios and I'd like to add that you do put it to the test. Very creative 👌.. great job.

I bought some of those small mic mufflers and sadly the Auto setting seems to think my voice is wind now. Had to set to off when using them.

I found it worked best onthe auto setting for most of the testing, when on the bike, they all sounded the same lots of wind noise.
