The problem is that people liked Matrix for different reasons (some for the action, some for the cyberpunk / sci-fi high and others for the philosophical undertones etc).
I don't think that is true. Everyone loves the first Matrix because it is one of the tightest movies of all time that delivers on so many levels. The problem was the directors are mediocre and couldn't produce another film even close to the level of the original film, so thought upping the action in sequels and overdoing the philosophy to ridiculous superficial levels was enough to make up for the fact that they didn't have the ability to make another good movie. That is why I shocked they gave the new movie to one of the original directors, because they have had constant misses since the first Matrix. Matrix sequels where bad and not fondly remembered, Speedracer, Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending all flopped, so it was ridiculous to give the Wachowski this movie again, when they have made nothing but flop movies since the original Matrix. They were simply one hit wonders.
I really liked 2 and 3. I know it was hit and miss with some people but it's great that they explored the actual war. Sooner or later they would need to and I think that is what people didn't like or didn't understand.
For me The Matrix was a 5 stars film and Reloaded and Revolutions were both 4 stars. I don't understand the hate. Even if someone didn't like/understand the plot, the action, visuals and music were glorious.
I also love that Revolutions showed how machines aren't inherently evil, that they were just trying to survive and programs can also experience emotions. A fascinating concept.
I liked 2 and 3 as well. I found myself appreciating them more once I started understanding the philosophical undertones. Reloaded especially was heavy with exposition.
I would've been okay with a meh story if they had brought back the Fight Choreographer for the original trilogy. Yuen Woo-Ping's fight choreography was iconic for the first 3 movies. I love the philosophy. The first one was simple, easily digestible in pill form, available to be consumed for the masses. The sequels showed what it’s like to actually go down the rabbit hole, and if you just let go of your left-brain, conscious mind and allow your right brain to navigate, you can enjoy the ride. Just rewatched Reloaded last night and it was so good- it was a lot more humorous than I remember.
I have shown the first Matrix film to my teenage son and I really enjoyed rewatching it. However we have skipped 2 and 3. I am much more interested to show him Dark City. It actually stands out more for me, in terms of story and the whole atmosphere.
I bet I’m going to like it. I liked the first and second Matrix movies. Wasn’t a big fan of the third but party because it was almost TOO much action which made me sleepy. I love me some action but it has to have meaning and depth behind it. Not action for actions sake. But we’ll see!
I see the potential in this movie but it ultimately just disappoints. Yes, the action scenes are choppy, like Walker Texas Ranger action scene choppy. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The fight on the train was awful but intriguing at the same time. Instead of agents taking over people, the matrix turns people into the rage zombies from 28 days later. When bugs said “what’s up doc” I was seriously done, Screw this movie.
Not a surprise it's lacking in the action cinematography department. Yuen Woo Ping and his stunt team made that first Matrix film what it was, not the Wachowskis.
“The Wachowskis have made some of the worst films in cinematic history”? Come on, John. _Speed Racer_ and _Cloud Atlas_ pushed the boundaries of the medium in ways we won’t fully appreciate for another generation. _Sense8_ is some of the best TV ever made. Their weakest work is _Jupiter Ascending_ , which was a three-hour film crammed into two, and it is _still_ packed full of great ideas, visuals and set pieces. And the much-maligned _Matrix_ sequels are undergoing a reappraisal as misunderstood masterpieces. John, I humbly suggest taking another look at “cinematic history” before maligning the most important American filmmakers working today. P.S. They also wrote _V for Vendetta_ and produced _Ninja Assassin_ , so bonus points for that 😎

@@simransidhu3444 You can literally find videos on that sort about any hated movie. Contrarian opinions aren't a new thing. Both sequels are still largely considered to be highly mediocre, especially Revolutions.
It’s a great movie. The movie f’s with your mind. It’s self aware... like a program. I think because covid the action scenes were limited on the grandeur, but still good. Makes me wonder on binary program NEO was working on, in the matrix.
Idk why ppl talk so much shit about Matrix 2, thats one of the best......the action in that movie is arguably better than the first...and the story is what it should be a middle point in the plot to stop the machines complete takeover of the known world and human consciousness. Smith was a radical program causing hella issues, maybe the cliffhanger kills it for people idk...
Lily said she didn’t want to work on it because she didn’t want to go back to work did did before her transition. Nothing to do with the content for Matrix 4 itself.
Matrix Resurrections should be something I'm excited about. I was nine when the original movie came out and I loved it. I may not have fully understood it at the time but the action, style, and characters were enough to rope me into the Matrix world. And I was 13 when Reloaded and Revolutions came out and I was just as excited about those. But so much time has passed and my opinions on the films have changed. I still really love that first movie. But my feelings on 2 & 3 aren't as strong. It's also one of those things where I watched them so many times growing up that I'm kind of just tired of them. When they announced Resurrections I didn't even have a glimmer of nostoliga. I was just kinda, "Meh. I might check it out." Honestly, if it were theater only I would have skipped it until digital release but since it's getting an HBOMax release I'll be checking it out there. But I am nowhere near the hype I was when the original first came out. It was really groundbreaking at the time. But now it's just more of the same.
Bit harsh saying the Wachowskis have made only the worst films in cinematic history since The Matrix came out. The Animatrix was legitimately great, Speed Racer & Cloud Atlas were underrated and now have cult followings, AND Sense8 was legitimately good. That aside Matrix Reloaded had some interesting ideas and scenes, and is nowhere near the trainwreck that was Revolutions. Plus, the Wachowskis allegedly helped shape the V for Vendetta movie too. In a world where formulaic AF movies make millions, the Wachowskis & M. Night Shyamalan (The Last Airbender & The Happening aside) deserves at least a *little* respect for continuing to at least TRY bringing something new to the screen every time.
The Matrix Reloaded is freaking amazing! I just didn’t like the last Matrix movie. I fell asleep I was kind of bored. But the first and second Matrix movies are awesome! The freeway scene alone is AMAZING!
Don’t forget: a lot of the original Matrix aesthetic was lifted from Steve Norrington’s BLADE (1997). Like: whole shots ‘borrowed’. And Michel Gondry and Guy Ritchie had both used bullet-time previously….
Most of the reviews I have seen have said the movie is mediocre, which is why they have put an review embargo to less than 24 hours from the film being released in cinemas. That is a huge clue that the movie is bad. Which probably explains why Weaver and Fishburn didn't come back for this movie. They should have never given the new movie back to the Wachowskis again because they have kinda proved they were mediocre directors with bad Matrix sequels, Speedracer, Cloud Atlas and the awful Jupiter Ascending. They should of got new better directors to bring something fresh and innovative to the new movie.
I mean the Wachowskis basically got lucky with the original. The first two sequels were slowly less well received and on top of that they decided the world really needed to be exposed to Jupiter Ascending.
I think it may get 50 to 60% fresh in Rotten Tomatoes. I guess most of us have extremely high expectation hoping it will top the original Matrix in 1999. According to so many interviews with the cast and Lana that I watched, it looks like Lana made a huge change in style, tone, and direction so that it is not a reboot of the original. With that, a lot of us will be disappointed. Like videogames, we are all used to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. of basically the same game but with added or different characters, more actions, better CGI, more explosions, etc. Last of Us II is a great example. One of the key characters died in the beginning of the game, some gamers were very upset and trashed the game big time. I personally still love that game. That is the story the creator chose. So the success of Matrix 4 depends on how open-minded we are.
The Matrix was a lighting in a bottle film. Released at the zeitgiest the new millennuim(Y2K) it was new, hip, and groundbreaking. It was prasied as the FUTURE of movies. If you were old enough in 1999 you'd know what I mean lol. But after 2000 it got parodied and homaged too much for it's own good, it's lost it's WOW factor. And that seems to be the case with Matrix Resurrections.
They made Neo, one of the coolest characters in cinematic history, a wimp in this one. I am not talking about in the beginning where the matrix is confusing him and feeding him nonsense to keep him in check. Talking about the second half, where he is able to dodge bullets, even missiles, but is rescued by Trinity because she can fly now and has powers of the one. They never alluded that Trinity was anything more than a love interest who could decently hold her own. She lost to the ghost twins in reloaded and Morpheus' shot saved her. Now, suddenly, she is all powerful. It was a stupid plot. I am a huge fan of the Matrix and this was such a let down. Reloaded and Revolutions had at least awesome action and music. This has no redeeming quality. The relationship between Neo and Smith is totally fucked up in this movie.
Yep agreed 1000 percent but they most like are going to make another one just base on some chracters that came back and didn't die and said he'd going to have his revenge and I'm not talking about agent Smith. they can fix it maybe in the next flim but I think they should do the alien matrix comic turn that into a movie
@@steazy45jug69 I would be ok if trinity is now as powerful as Neo, but they did Neo dirty. There is a certain atmosphere in the matrix movies, this one is all wrong.
@@SpiceAndSauce maybe I’m just getting tired of every single movie changing the from a powerful male to a powerful female.. I’m waiting on MJ to take Spider-Man’s powers next.. I guess I’m biased against trinity bc Hollywood movies are doing this to damn much.. I don’t mind when women have super powers or are strong leads, but don’t take all my male superhero’s damn!!
Agreed! I don’t mind them being equally powerful but it’s a shame how they did Neo dirty. Emasculated. I also hated that the Merovingian only got 1 scene blabbing for few seconds and theeenn gone. I liked the Merovingian in the first 2 sequels.
Because both Neo and Trinity died at the end of the trilogy, Resurrections needed to open showing more of their resurrection by the machines. Similarly, a more fleshed-out depiction of the 'Machine civil war' that happened between Revolutions and Resurrections would have added the much-needed context that the current film was so obviously lacking. Not having more of the original actors or its original darker cyberpunk feel to instead replace it with a campy atmosphere throughout, led to that feeling we're all having over what was a landmark example of film making turned corporate mess, the very thing the original film stood against. Heard there's a sequel. Maybe we’ll eventually discover the entire Resurrections film was just another one of Neo’s dreams from safe within his pod. That would explain the disjointed, dream-like campy theme to Resurrections and allow the next film to be the real Matrix outside of the modal that was created not by Neo, but the (original) Architect. The line in Resurrections where Neo says "I've had dreams that weren't just dreams," as well as what the Analyst tells him about his current "reality" are strong clues. This would also mean Lana played with all our minds. It’s we that were in the Matrix within a Matrix in Resurrections. We dreamt Neo's dream. By the next film, I fully expect Neo to wake up from that dream to again become the One he still is and is still becoming....
I was one of those who felt this movie should not get made. However, after the first trailer dropped I was super excited. After seeing a couple of reviews I am not too stoked anymore. Obviously it seems it's not great. I just hope it's not as bad as some have said. Also, it seems to me that folks who didn't have high expectations generally are ok with it.
Accidentally watched the trilogy yesterday, and I’m kinda excited to see it Wednesday. 2 & 3 just a bit too confusing and muddled but I think there’s so much more in today’s society that they could dig into for this movie.
Even though I have HBO Max I was going to see it in the theaters. But my wife and I both got Covid. So HBO Max it is. The sad thing is this was my second most anticipated movie of the year after Dune
Hearing that one critic say, "Haters gonna Hate." Worries me that they'll Luke Skywalker Neo. Meaning that they kill him off or he's not gonna be part or the final battle that much and have Jessica Henwick be the lead and not feel earned.
@@DakodBleu I don't mind it, if it feels earned like how Ripley became the lead of the first Alien after the first half. But nowadays it just doesn't feel earned.
How does anyone who claim to have watched and understood the Matrix think they are going to see something new? In the original trilogy they mentioned that everything Neo did and experienced had happened millions of times before. The film isn't about the audience, or todays techology improvements the film is about the story being told.
Going to watch with my mom on Christmas on HBOMax. Best format for movies. Poor lady would never get to see a movie again because of being COPD and Covid.
I have to be honest and say I have heard this so many times before now someone saying how they are not excited for the matrix resurrections but then say they are going to see it on opening day and then saying how when they first saw the trailer it didn't make them want to go see it but then continue to talk about how amazing and terrific the trailer looks... Kind of confusing so is this one of those movies that no matter what you have to see it or is it just the fact that you want it to be so good but don't think it will meet expectations?
I don't think the movie looks bad or anything but I haven't been that excited for it myself. I feel like the Wachowskis ( edit: just Lana Wachowski actually) are only doing another one because of how bad their last few films have done and/or have been received. If it had to happen, it should've been sooner maybe.
It was INDEED poorly directed and executed. I’m so heartbrokenly disappointed. Still love the matrix franchise though. I’ll give it another watch just for its lore. Story was great BUT the execution was POORLY done.
I still think WB should of done a February release or March December Xmas break No way home, West Side story & sing 2 will overtake the box office Sure people are interested M4 but no way home will draw families over Xmas day and weekend So M4 will take a hit but slightly
Just saw it. This neither felt like a sequel or a reboot. Makes Reloaded/Revolutions look like classics. Action scenes were sooooo bad. And to top it all, bad cover of a great RATM song.
I don’t really know how I feel when I think about what seeing this movie will be like, because the first Matrix is one of my all time favorite movies, but I to this day have never seen Reloaded or Revolutions, they’re on my watch list but since I’ve been so preoccupied with watching my Christmas movies I just wasn’t able to get around to them in time, so I’m actually kinda thinking that I’m gonna be pretty lost when I see this movie, I guess there’s a chance I’ll like it more because I don’t have the supposed stench of the second and third movie and only have the memories of the awesome first movie but there’s also a part of me that thinks I skipped out on a necessity and so it’s gonna muddy my knowledge of what’s going on, so I really don’t know what to expect when I go into this movie
The thing I hate most, hearing about this film is that it's trying to be ''funny''. I think about a lot of things when I think about the The Matrix films, but funny ain't really one of them. And that's not a complained. In facts, that's what I love about them, that they DO take themselves seriously. But now in this marvel era of film making, everyone is waaay too afraid to take themselves seriously and always need to make a little wink to the audience to let them know they are ''in on the joke as well''. I absolutely HATE that sh*t. Just make movies that have passion and care behind them and take your own film seriously, stop this making everything needs to be a comedy now. Also, sure the second and third film might not be as good, but I still love them and reloaded has some of the best action scenes ever put on film. That car chase alone is an event, and that Burly Brawl is absolutely insane. And the music in those films as well... amazing. Also people love to shit on the CGI in 2 and 3, but compare them to most films around that era, they hold up so much better.
@@wadewilson8924 He didnt blame MCU, he blames Hollywood way of thinking that because comedy, horrible comedy i must say, in MCU works, that means that every franchise now has to be silly and full of jokes, which is really bad way of thinking
@@wadewilson8924 it seemed the OP was more having a dig at todays movies in general. It’s not Marvel’s fault that they’re giving audiences what they want. They’ve become incredibly average and generic but it’s easy watching and families laugh at it. Yet a film like blade runner 2049 which is pretty far from the marvel type but it absolutely bombs at box office. So really it’s the audience that have told film studios that we want more Marvel types and less of the serious and adult driven storytelling films.
Keanu & Henwick are both great. First half set up interesting ideas although the action, climax and reliance on old story beats ultimately left me feeling a little let down. That said, the queue starts behind me for number 5.
If matrix isn’t getting amazing reviews then I think that’ll affect box office, with Spider-Man getting INSANE reviews they’ll make a ton of money in their second week
Spider-Man was honestly really good, but you can’t deny movie/marketing politics. You notice how Shang-Chi and Eternals, not terrible films, but still fade away quickly. They get a time tested franchise title like Spider-Man, and everyone is 1,000% on board with their reviews before it even comes out to general audiences. I’m not saying Matrix will be good or bad, I’m just saying only certain folks have pull like that.
I liked it. I Braved Omicron with 2 masks to watch at IMAX. There was nothing ground-breaking. It was not novel. It did not, like the first, change everything. The visuals, the fight scenes are unabashedly Matrix but Matrix after 2 decades in which all major blockbusters have built on the novelty till it is no longer novel but expected. What it was, was a revisit to characters cherished. Trinity still kicks butt & Neo still questions his reality. For those of us who did not like the ending 2decades ago it was an alternate reality that we desired. Both characters have aged like a fine Kentucky Bourbon, with a flavor for the few not the many. I once again differ with "consensus" of the majority of reviews, but then I am a fan who always wanted one more.
So sad that so many commenters have already made up their mind without even seeing it yet, or at least waiting for real reviews from people who actually watched it. This tribalism that exists in social media now is killing the movie industry.
The Wachowski Brothers went balls out on the 1st Matrix and made a glorious movie.. the sisters haven't made anything good since.. the reviews sound like it should have been released Star Network rather a theatrical release...
I dont think people realize the studios pay people to write flowery positive reviews online via tweets, posts and whatnot. Its shameless marketing tactics. This film was insufferably bad for reasons too numerous to even mention.

I really don't see why people are calling it "woke", or someone can give me a good argument for it to change my mind. I'm aware of what Hollywood is doing to films, such as Last Jedi, but to compare it to this new Matrix movie? Stretch. My only issue with the movie is that it feels rushed.
@@TimothyMorigeau Probably because people like this water the term down to being meaningless, like calling things racist at the drop of a hat when it's not.
My guess is they are just using the term woke to describe a more female impowered version of the Matrix like how in this movie Trinity is the key and can like fly and carry Neo as he is dumbed down in this movie and women kinda carry the plot and are more the main characters and roles in this movie suggesting its solely to fill a Hollywood agenda.
The trailers made me think it was going to be awesome but it's a far cry from the other Matrix movies. Everything is worse than the original Matrix. The negative reviews are spot on as it's too meta, choppy action scenes, dumbed down versions of the characters, and the story is kinda lame and resolves blandly in a low budget film way while being disguised as a big budget blockbuster.

ok - just got back from IMAX - and I had a blast - yes there was a lot of poking fun and meta, but I had fun - the Agent Smith twist... I literally jumped up and yelled "yes!!!" So much fun :)!!!
Dune is my favourite film of the year and got mixed reviews, from critics and moviegoers alike. So Matrix Resurrections reviews mean nothing to me. I'll form my own opinion when I see it.
83% Rotten Tomatoes, 8.2/10 on IMDb from user ratings making it one of the highest rated films of the year... Where the hell are these "mixed" reviews you're talking about?
5:49 I disagree with Kimberly. From these reviews, the mind-bending stuff wasn't the stuff people had a problem with. These reviewers criticized the heavy use of exposition, rapid cutting in action sequences, nostalgia, being "too meta," and having unclear stakes. From what you guys showed, the mind-bending stuff was the things people did like. Being meta and being mind-bending are not necessarily the same thing.
Its not a slick philosophical action movie.. its a commentary on how the banality of life can drive you mad if you focus on it (which neo cant stop doing) and how we tend to just want to consume the same predictable art over and over again even though we know its stale. Idk why ppl talk so much shit about Matrix 2, thats one of the best......the action in that movie is arguably better than the first...and the story is what it should be a middle point in the plot to stop the machines complete takeover of the known world and human consciousness.
I'm in the minority of folks that liked Cloud Atlas.....so I may actually like the film 😫🤣🤣
Preach!
The Matrix Reloaded is freaking amazing! I just didn’t like the last Matrix movie. I fell asleep I was kind of bored. But the first and second Matrix movies are awesome! The freeway scene alone is AMAZING!
I would argue that Matrix Reloaded is definitely the greatest of the 4
The Wachowskis weren't responsible for The Animatrix though.
@@zuriyel5368 They didn't direct it, but they partially wrote & oversaw it (like they did with V for Vendetta as well)
Don’t forget: a lot of the original Matrix aesthetic was lifted from Steve Norrington’s BLADE (1997). Like: whole shots ‘borrowed’. And Michel Gondry and Guy Ritchie had both used bullet-time previously….
This movie its so bad. Im just gonna pretend that it doesn't exist for the rest of my life cause i really like the matrix
What a disappointing ride Matrix Resurrection was 😞 But The Matrix can never be topped unless they invent something better than Bullet Time.

I've seen it. Should rename it the MEHtrix. It's not great.
The Wachowski brothers made 3 really good films the first time out. The brothers should have worked together again on this one.
Ok sooo who wants to tell this guy about the Wachowski Sisters?

Most of the reviews I have seen have said the movie is mediocre, which is why they have put an review embargo to less than 24 hours from the film being released in cinemas. That is a huge clue that the movie is bad. Which probably explains why Weaver and Fishburn didn't come back for this movie. They should have never given the new movie back to the Wachowskis again because they have kinda proved they were mediocre directors with bad Matrix sequels, Speedracer, Cloud Atlas and the awful Jupiter Ascending. They should of got new better directors to bring something fresh and innovative to the new movie.
6:07 Actually Matrix ripped off Ghost in a Shell.
I really liked the movie. It was basically everything I wanted it to be.
Released here in Japan last Friday.
I hated it, its so bad... I cant wait for Red Letter Media to review it hahaha
I hate the fact that trinity is now more powerful than neo!!! I loved this movie bc of neo and now he is taking a back seat 😩😩😩
@@steazy45jug69 I would be ok if trinity is now as powerful as Neo, but they did Neo dirty. There is a certain atmosphere in the matrix movies, this one is all wrong.

M1 iconic, M2 great, M3 good… M4 i felt like crying with massive disappointment
At what point are we going to accept these directors stole the original story for the 1st movie. Everything else they have made has been terrible.
Reloaded and revolutions were 10/10 resurrections was an 8/10

The sad thing is this was my second most anticipated movie of the year after Dune
Hearing that one critic say, "Haters gonna Hate." Worries me that they'll Luke Skywalker Neo. Meaning that they kill him off or he's not gonna be part or the final battle that much and have Jessica Henwick be the lead and not feel earned.

Kind of confusing so is this one of those movies that no matter what you have to see it or is it just the fact that you want it to be so good but don't think it will meet expectations?
this movie is basically two decade late 2 and a half hour long epilogue to the trilogy
I don't think the movie looks bad or anything but I haven't been that excited for it myself. I feel like the Wachowskis ( edit: just Lana Wachowski actually) are only doing another one because of how bad their last few films have done and/or have been received. If it had to happen, it should've been sooner maybe.

Having seen the film, I will say some will love it, some really won’t. But my take is it’s bonkers in the best ways possible.
I guess this will be the Last Jedi of the Matrix franchise
I'm starting to think it's an oppinion and preference thing: like it, don't like it or "it was okay". I'm still exited to watch Matrix resurrections
71% on Rotten Tomatoes from 102 reviews at time of writing. And the positive reviews are _effusive_ 💪😎
I think it could have done without the constant callbacks, but still, I enjoyed it
The thing I hate most, hearing about this film is that it's trying to be ''funny''.
Blaming this more than likely shitty movie on marvel is just childish

@@wadewilson8924 it seemed the OP was more having a dig at todays movies in general. It’s not Marvel’s fault that they’re giving audiences what they want. They’ve become incredibly average and generic but it’s easy watching and families laugh at it. It's fucking garbage. I passed out more than once watching it. It was like a bad WB TV series about the matrix universe.
If matrix isn’t getting amazing reviews then I think that’ll affect box office, with Spider-Man getting INSANE reviews they’ll make a ton of money in their second week
Luckily it's day and day on HBO max.
My friend saw the premiere in SF the other day, they still haven’t mentioned a single thing about the movie. I don’t see that as a good sign.
its not a slick action movie at all... so its not what people will be expecting.
It makes some good points about banality of life and art.
I hope the Matrix is good, but get the feeling it is just going to be OK.
