Probably should mention, that if Sony actually produced a console with 2x cpu power, you would probably stop seeing 60fps on the base machine and potentially segmenting their own market and development.

Seriously it only seems like yesterday I was watching Rich talking about how Ryzen being in consoles was a big upgrade and how it should hopefully allow for different game experiences/better simulation, saying how the 16x memory increase in PS4 gen paired with decent GPUs was the reason we saw huge graphically impressive games but not much changed in terms of physics and simulation from the prior gen thanks to the Jaguar CPUs, I was hoping Zen CPUs wouldn't just give us better FPS but actually allow for better enemy and NPC AI, better physics and better overall world simulation and I don't think weve seen that at all so far! Unfortunately game development techniques don't scale with hardware. Most triple AAA games are made on unreal or some other engine where many aspects of code will never be touched. The irony is that we can push game engines further and further to eventually produce life like simulations of physics, allowing an inherent complexity in games without additional cost to software development, however as already mentioned, at the cost of needing to stay on the bleeding edge to maintain decent fps with ever advancing engine tech. Or you could go with the Nintendo/first party approach and make games like Breath of the Wild that is an example of what can be done when a game is hand crafted. It was made on ps3 era hardware whilst featuring a fleshed out physics engine and while utilising an absolute butt tonne of carefully curated shaders and particle effects, in addition to heavily pre-baked lighting that frankly results in a game that wouldn't feel out of place in the current generation.
So I conclude that we will forever be hitting that 30fps wall on consoles because most game developers first instinct is to hand off games to non-bespoke game engines who's goal is to increasingly simulate reality at the cost of clever and frugal programming.

But when my pc game starts choking because 1 core is at 100% and the others are all below 20% with most at 0%, I don't think the problem lies with the fundamental limitations of the hardware.

  • @AKSBSU

The main flaw in this debate is people don't seem to be realizing how much more balanced the PS5 is then the PS4. True, the Zen 2 chip is not exactly cutting edge at this point and will lead to some compromises and tweaks, but it's a decent and solid chip, whereas the Jaguar was considered weak even when it was first put into previous gen consoles in 2013. PS4 started with a huge CPU bottleneck that remained quite prominent in the PS4 Pro, whereas the PS5 CPU was an absolutely massive upgrade over the previous generation with far more room to scale up than the previous generation. There are limitations, but they are being grossly exaggerated as though a strong AI upscaling technique plus a massive GPU upgrade will be barely noticeable. I'm expecting a substantial improvement, and optimization on average is far more thorough on console than PC games (and I mostly game on PC; have a 5800x and 7900 XTX Nitro, 240 Hz G9 ultrawide monitor, superlight Logitech mouse, SkyPad glass mouse pad, the whole deal). Sony's first party developers in particular are going to get quite a lot out of those hardware upgrades. Imagine what Insomniac will do with that much more power.

This! Many reveal trailers for PS4 had simulations and destruction that wasn’t possible on the console. You're spot on, this generation of consoles were LEAPS & BOUNDS ahead of last gen. So much so that it'll take a while for studios to really squeeze them for the last bit of performance.
Everyone is talking about the PS5 Pro being a side grade at best, but that's not what I see. The PS5 Pro is about to shatter expectations and those who understand tech can see it coming.
It's not even about being a fanboy or anything like that, as I don't own either console. It's just about understanding that Sony is about to bring their own A.I driven upscaling solution like DLSS to an RTX 3080~3080 Ti class GPU console, and most likely framegen as well.

Again, the CPU situation that DF are describing is not situation we find ourselves in working with Xbox and PS5 consoles. Dragon's Dogma 2 is the exception not the rule and it is broken on the most powerful CPUs available. You are creating a situation where you are creating a false expectation that the Pro will not fix framerates when it absolutely will in most cases.

GPU performance is clearly lacking in these boxes and the informed media is sandbagging a possible Pro launch over the CPU performance... Boggles the mind.
The goal is to go from 30hz to 60hz or so... it's not going to be some 480hz machine.
Zen 2 is a very recent iteration, Sony is handcuffed to zen 2 allegedly because of some optimizations they made in the past with the architecture.
Consoles do gaming a service by forcing innovation in programming. clearly some developers need to better optimize or avoid the console space altogether. Brute forcing the games we play with 4090s is not the answer going forward. Most people are utilizing hardware that is objectively worse than 9th gen gaming consoles.

I remember buying NBA 2k17 for Xbox 360 but I never played it because I ended up getting it on PC. PS2 was still releasing games in 2014. We have short memories when it comes to these things. Dear Digital Foundry,
I’m starting to lose faith on your ability to provide an objective analysis on upcoming hardware without painting them as negative, disinteresting, or unnecessary.
Since the first rumors of ps5 pro emerged, there’s been strong resistance to the fact that new Sony hardware is coming.
Particularly Alex really hates the idea of a pro and professes it to be nothing but a marginal upgrade. He keeps not recommending it without really talking about the enhancements it could bring forth to ps5 games.
When optimized, Sony first party games like demon souls, Spider Man 2, the last of us part 1 and any first party game that comes out (with a 60fps mode) this generation should theoretically run at pssr-4k at 60fps on the pro.
In your last video you painted the pro as being a disappointment because of the assumption that GTA 6 wouldn’t likely have a 60fps mode. As if Rockstar doesn’t have the budget, manpower and experience to include 60fps in their the most anticipated game of all time. Much like EA, Ubisoft, Sony and others have included 60fps modes in their games. This gen 60fps modes are the norm rather than the exception.
Why not talk about the potential benefits based on the features of the ps5 pro and what it could bring to ps5 games rather than being dismissive? Could it play first party games at 4k fidelity?
Alex is always so quick to deny and dismiss the pro’s existence he had no clue it would have custom upscale hardware. Just a few weeks ago he was so surprised to learn about pssr. Surely he must know optimization on a fixed console architecture is much different than developing for different pc builds.
We have to wait and see the design behind the pro before we talk about what it can or cannot do. If the design and philosophy of ps5 extends to the pro, then the system is designed to maximize efficiency in all aspects focusing on performance and resolution.
We don’t know what this system will be able to do until we see how optimized games run on it. Higher performance, more efficient ray tracing, custom pssr, and other custom features can extract much more performance when optimizing for a fixed console architecture.
We can have a more productive discussion when we are more objective and less emotional when talking about console hardware

It is not that complicated: Framerate is often presented as averages, meaning 30 fps are 30 frames a second.
Frametimes are the time used to present frames, a second has 1,000 miliseconds, which is the basis for calculating frametimes. When you have 30 fps, a frame takes 33 ms average.
But having 30 fps and a single one taking 150 ms leads to a stutter. When the remaining 29 frames are rendered fast enough, you can still have 33 ms in average, but not a fluid experience.

You’ve all been spoiled due to covid and the sky high tech prices 4 years ago. You got last gen games (on both last gen and current), marketed as current gen on current gen platforms, with 60 fps quality and 120 fps performance modes. Now that there’s some real current gen games coming out (unreal engine 5, nanite, lumen, path tracing, etc.) it’s baffling how ppl think that 30 FPS isn’t going to be the norm. Tekken 8 just came out recently. It’s an unreal engine 5 game. In order for it to reach 60 fps. They had to turn nanite and lumen off, then use upscalers from lower resolution to make a fake, higher res image, with obvious ghosting. It barely achieves 60 FPS and keep in mind it doesn’t have huge open worlds, but rather small stages where things don’t have to be rendered as much. Now look at all of the other unreal engine 5 games that do utilize those features (think there’s about 20 games out so far) and you’ll see those games struggling on current gen. And if all PS5 pro is going to to do is raise the CPU wattage by 10% that’s not going to somehow double the performance to reach 60fps. It’s going to be more like how boost mode worked in PS4 pro. So you may see a few games uncap their frame rates, like bloodborne did to get an unstable 45ish fps, that would dip when you turned the camera. But that’s a far cry from a steady 60.

The reality is simple-CPU’s are typically not the bottleneck in current gen games. I don’t know if GTA VI will struggle to reach 60fps or 30 or 45, but I will say that if it does it’s very unlikely to be because of the CPU.
There isn’t a perfect comp for this game, but you can EASILY hit 60fps with a 4090 and a zen 2 cpu with plenty of room to spare with modern games (Cyberpunk is an ok comp).
I just hope that Rockstar gives us the choice to pick our preferred frame rate and fidelity, because I would expect that you should be able to get a really good balance on the ps5 pro of frame rate and nearly the same level of detail as the quality mode on base ps5. The ray tracing usually clobbers the current gen, but it should be much easier for the pro version to handle without significantly hamstringing general performance given the use of additional dedicated hardware for it compared to base ps5.
Still, just try to remember that GTA V originally came out for the Xbox 360, ran on an actual DVD disc, and used less than a half gig of ram. They squeezed every drop out of that box, and I’m excited to see what they can do with about 100x the hardware

But the TurboGrafx-16 had an 8-bit CPU with a 16-bit GPU. Wasn’t exactly up to par with the Super NES. Vita = Portable PS1/PS2 that can also emulate NES, Genesis, Super NES, 16-bit MAME, and 32X. Can also play every PSP game. Has an SoC of the iPhone 4S which puts it as a souped up 6th gen console like the original Xbox and Wii (a 7th gen console with 6th gen specs).
Switch = Has an SoC more powerful than the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U. Is essentially the Wii U controller but turning into a full fledged handheld. Can handle many of the 7th gen classics that are being rereleased like Red Dead Redemption. Nintendo’s GOAT console. Love the size for a 7th generation spec’d handheld. Less than 300 g while PS3 fat weighs 11 lbs (5 kg).
Steam Deck: Is my portable PC/Xbone, and a little bit of the PS4. Has 1.6 teraflops or 0.2 less than the base PS4. Big and very wide but extremely comfortable. Can emulate way more than a Vita, Switch, or any powerful Android smartphone can do since OG Xbox, PS3, and Wii U emulation is not common for Android users. I can live with 30 fps for the rest of my life.
I believe Julien Melnick is correct that we’re at the forefront of this new PC handheld revolution. I think this is the future of gaming. I believe PlayStation 6 needs to be a hybrid like the Switch in order to succeed. This is how home consoles will be from now on. They NEED to be portable. These companies needs to give an option to that user/owner. Everything needs to go mobile.
PC handhelds is merging the home console AAA experience with portability. Back then, we had a home console and a handheld. But the handheld always got the worst ports. Think how amazing it was to play Golden Abyss on a Vita about 12 years ago? People were saying they couldn’t believe they could play Uncharted on a handheld. Now I can play Uncharted 4 on my Deck without any graphical and budget compromise the Vita had.
I play my Steam Deck every single day. As Julien said, the Deck makes you want to play video games. It’s a bad analogy but it’s like comparing the Deck to laxatives. Laxatives makes you want to shit, right? That’s the Steam Deck when it comes to playing video games. I’m 43 going to turn 44 in December. From 2007-2017, I really didn’t game much. I became a casual gamer. I became more focused in the cell phone industry by 2004. I missed out on most of Gen 7.
I too have the TomToc case. Mine is black as I hear the gray one is a little loose at the top while the black and white ones are snug fit. But I do prefer the gray’s design and material used more. The TomToc is about 30%-40% thinner than the Deck case it came with. Each time I walk out with it, it’s almost like I’m carrying this mini briefcase before heading to work.
Is the Steam Deck perfect? Hell no. Yesterday after finishing Chapter 13 of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the thing just froze. Couldn’t bring up the quick menu. Had to hold the power button for quite a bit to reboot it. I get issues like this quite frequently. It still is a PC and it’s going to have PC errors and glitches. Let’s just say it’s not as stable as a Switch.
I’ve rebooted my cheapo 512 LCD Deck quite a number of times. Sometimes I worry if the screen will never turn back on. Been several times when I charge it and then I try to wake it and it remains a black screen. Some issue with the update overnight. Sometimes the keyboard won’t always pop up and then it’s quite laggy with the touchscreen that I have to use the controller to go to each letter.
Linux also reads a different extension as Windows and macOS. Inserted my Deck’s microSD into an SD converter to put into my old MacBook Air and my Mac couldn’t read the contents. And of course the main issue for a lot of Deck owners is when certain games won’t launch and the anticheat software.
Even with all that negativity, I still consider the Steam Deck the greatest gaming device I’ve ever owned. It’s so comfortable to play games on. I don’t really feel the weight until 2 straight hours into a game. The LCD one is supposed to be 250 g heavier than the Switch OLED and it feels that they’re the same weight.
Of course just like in all of tech, there will be a successor. We’ll praise the Steam Deck now, but once a better one comes out, we’ll be selling our old ones because what’s the point? Valve handhelds don’t need to be backwards compatible. Valve doesn’t sell physical games. So your Deck will be sold like people selling their DS and PSP before the 3DS and Vita came out.
I do question myself and wonder if I will continue to play video games in my 50s and 60s? Or will I be more like my stepdad who watches Netflix and my mom who watches a lot of RUclips? Will the Steam Deck be my final gaming purchase? Hasn’t games peaked? Only differences is coming from having better graphics.
I’m not sure Switch 2 is going to be mind-blowing. If it’s only on par to the Deck’s power (or base model PS4) and costs $400, then I’m not sure I’ll sell my Switch Lite at all. And Nintendo being assholes with emulation, I’m not sure I want to support them ever again. Nintendo makes sure for you to equally hate them as much as you love them. They portray both the good cop and bad cop parent when it comes to raising us when we were children.
I’ve known how ruthless Nintendo has always been way before I got the internet. I would read articles about them from GamePro, EGM, and Next Generation. They’ve always been assholes since the 80s. Back in 1993, they pissed a lot of us off when refusing to put the blood in Mortal Kombat. Perhaps I should stick to Valve and tell Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft to go F themselves. I’m personally not even excited for an Xbox handheld either. I’ve never enjoyed their library.
I’m generally a Sony PlayStation fanboy and I’m not excited for another Sony handheld either. Sony has their own issues like digital games disappearing from people’s accounts. Final Fantasy, God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Grand Theft Auto, and Tekken have gotten stale and most of those IPs are no longer exclusive to Sony like year’s past. Most of the best gaming IPs were born in the 80s. I feel a Steam Deck is all I’ll ever need. It’s the greatest gaming device ever made.
I’m off to playing FF7 Remake again. I’m doing some meaningless sidequests to take a break from the main story. Then hopefully we Steam users gets Rebirth a lot sooner on Steam than the 2.5 years when it got Remake in 2022. I got another comment coming up all about Final Fantasy VII, my favorite video game of all-time. Gawd, I love Tifa. I’ve always loved her since 1997 but she’s even more badass in Remake. I love her attacks in this one. Tifa Lockhart will always be my waifu.

The main difference between Valve and the other 3 constructors is they don't have shareholders so they don't need to do "evil" things.
But they never communicate on their strategy so they will never take risks.

Vita definitely sits above the 6th gen consoles and was doing a lot of effects the OG Xbox, PS2, GameCube, and Dreamcast couldn’t do. It’s two launch games, uncharted Golden Abyss and Assassin’s creed liberation shared far more in common visually with its 7th gen games than 6th gen games. More dynamic lighting and other effects not common during that era

My question would be is what are the recommended specs for 4K/60 for GTA6? I think maybe the PS5 pro Ai chip and PSSR should upscale it to a 4k/60 performance and maybe just leave any type of ray-tracing out for a 4K/60 performance mode.

4k/60 on console won't be possible. Think of it like GTAV. Even on a PS4 Pro you weren't doing 4k/60. Like they said these games target 30fps and visuals and animations and the world first. I've become a convert to 40 FPS - at least when implemented well. It's the perfect sweet spot between fidelity and performance (if 60 FPS comes at too much of a cost to fidelity). Secondly, not all 30 FPS games are alike - compare Witcher 3 @ 30FPS vs. RDR2. The former is noticeably choppy (unless you ramp motion blur to the point the game is a smear), whereas the latter is very easy on the eyes.

I’m not so sure. Depends on how CPU-bound is the game. Also, Depending on how good PSSR, internal resolution could be very low and upscaled to 1440p or maybe 1800p. This way it could potentially hit 60fps.

    • @crestofhonor2349
      @crestofhonor2349 4 месяца назад +1

To think that games are going to now run at 60fps all the time is not realistic. The more advanced and realistic our games become the more taxing they are. A huge CPU bump for the PS5 Pro would demolish performance for the base model, as that's going to be neglected by game devs then. Many games nowadays lack optimization more than anything else. If you can't push past 30fps on a console platform plus low level graphics API with a Zen2 CPU while providing mediocre visuals, the issue does not lie with the hardware! The publishers have become too greedy and they refuse to invest into proper technical and engine development. Sony's in-house titles like Ratchet and Clank show what's possible.
