I can't believe Sony had their premier developer waste 5 years on a multiplayer title that never came, and a remake of a game that was just remastered... that is like 8 years of dev time just lost. At least we are getting a new IP, but they could have had 2 new ips and a smaller Jak 4.

@@mianlo2624its most likely the lack of game engine development.
This has caused the issue of unused hardware/software on pc and consoles. Ps5 has been running with purely raw power and not with its intended custom hardware advancements.
Also with pc, since no game has ever ran better using DX12 or DX12 ultimate, it’s factual that hardware all the way bad to the rx6000s and rtx2000 series cards haven’t been taken advantage of properly.

@@detritiv0re144 I am hobby dev on Unity and want to eventually live of it. He is right though. There is this feature of Unity engine that lets you program in so called Data Oriented programming mode compared to Object Oriented Programming which everyone programs in. To explain in layman terms, DOP is more complicated but far more performant because you are actually, as the name suggests, taking into account the type of data you are working on and its less understandable to read. While OOP, is what everyone uses almost in all software development, deals more with abstraction and you dont think of hardware at all, its all left to the compiler to try to optimize your code as much as possible. This is why for example PS2 had to so many mind blowing games for its relatively underpowered hardware because devs had to actually code to the metal as they call it in assembly literally writing instructions for cpu and gpu. There is some clear issue today with devs becoming not only less skilled but also not even have access to code as best as they could even if they knew. Jonathan Blow talks about this aswell.

A lot of the issue is the current poly counts and level of detail in textures are to demanding for good anti aliasing tech, and the amount of time wasted prebaking fake lighting effects. Like fake baked in bounce lighting, fake screen space reflections, fake hand placed shadows. If PSSR is on par with DLSS it will fix the anti aliasing issue. And better RT performance could let more devs go the Avatar route and save a ton of time with lighting by using RT instead of hand crafting all the faking it methods.

I think the PS5 Pro is actually being underestimated if anything. People are looking at the spec sheets of base PS5 vs PS5 Pro, but if the PSSR upscaling solution is a strong technology, and I expect it to be if they're basing a machine around it, the Pro is going to outperform current expectations quite a bit. In addition, I think people are thinking back to the PS4 Pro being heavily CPU limited, but that CPU was weak in 2013. The PS5 was a much more balanced machine and has far more room to scale up with a Ryzen chip (even if it's getting dated now compared to when it was released) than was the case for the PS4 Pro.

part of it is where the players are... you can't just say a game needs 8 cpu cores at 4GHz and a RTX4080 or better to play it... most of the PC crowd are on laptops or some crappy tower they bought from Walmart or Best Buy.
There are two typical resolutions that console makers are targeting... 1080p( PS4, Xbox One, Xbox series S... and maybe a future hanheld)
and 4k where PS5 and Series X tried to get too... but they really are running way short of that, maybe 1440p upscaled.
Developers might want to abandon the 1080p crowd, but there is still a lot of gamers stuck with those sort of devices.
Microsoft probably has a pro chip in the works... The chips they use in the Xbox are the same chips they use in Azure for various tasks including gamepass and Xbox live servers. They'll probably focus heavily on TOPS performance along with something similar to PS5 pro... allegedly Microsoft might not be held back by which version of Zen they use so they could really get some performance gains

Everyone needs to stop looking at the base specs. We all should know that consoles are never designed to have raw power not only because it’s expensive, but because it’s possible to get equivalent or even better performance with custom hardware.
This is proven by the custom ps5 FLASH CONTROLLER. I can’t believe even YOU DF don’t remember this thing. Sony stated it themselves that it takes away a ton of tasks a CPU traditionally would do, in which in the ps5s case the flash controller tasks would need 9 available cpu cores to run. That’s actually insane.
Plus, ps5 literally has the possibility for the best video game audio experience ever. With the tempest engine that would need 3 cpu cores to run, whilst videos games have only ever gotten a fraction of a single core for audio.

Jumping to 4K native is a massive drain on the gpu but if using FSR you would upscale to 4K and probably hit 60 on some games, it’s so smooth you really wouldn’t know it’s not 4K native
