    from the article it sounds like game preservation is a broader scope of back compact. it says one of the reasons why backward compatibility was shut down was due to it was hard legally to keep doing backward compatibility due to expired licensing and studio ownership. some of the devs might be InCharge of securing licensing rights for some games or the games they lost licensing rights too.

    Given how Microsoft are the most aggressive with DRM, have discontinued their backwards-compatibility program, physical releases possess incomplete disc builds w/ Smart Delivery & are going as far as pushing digital only releases for their 1st party lineup, I don't trust shit from them, not when we know especially in regards to physical media, we're in the potentially last generation as far as the Xbox is concerned.

    Backwards compatibility mainly by downloading from their servers and with DRM. Better than having no backwards compatibility or stripping it out like Sony did with the PS3? Yes. Game preservation? No. If they really cared about game preservation, they would create some kind of archive for old games so they are not completely lost. This is like calling the Windows compatibility modes software preservation. Like most companies nowadays, Microsoft is clearly shifting towards digital subscription models, which are not good for preservation. Until I see some additional actions by them, this is just marketing BS.

    *x86-> ARM code...*
    MACHINE LEARNING might be involved here as well. Intel bought a company who did a lot of work on creating a HARDWARE processor that could actually break apart SINGLE threaded code to process some of it in PARALLEL. So that part CAN be done in hardware and/or software. We might see TWO different things happen->
    #1) Custom "Emulation" hardware in the CPU, and/or
    #2) ML done to the older game code (XBSX and previous) to run efficiently on an ARM CPU
    I assume they'd want the code to run on other ARM devices (i.e. laptops) as well, so if they do ANY of this I'm not sure how they'd do it specifically. Or could they create a CUSTOM area that just converts some of the code on-the-fly? I'm not sure if they'd want to be recompiling old code as unexpected things can happen, although maybe the ML process could actually make things more stable. In theory, it's possible to IMPROVE the code (i.e. built-in diagnostic to verify passed arguments are valid and correct code that is faulty). In practise, probably difficult.

    Love the idea of preservation of gaming. It lets us all enjoy our older games at higher framerates and adds value to the Xbox brand for people who are essentially broke. Let's be honest here: the economy is not doing well and people want to go back to the older classic games they liked and re-experience them again. It also allows younger gamers to buy older games that they missed because they were not even born when the games were around at the time. Why is that important? Because you may want to binge game through a series of games where it's a long running series; starting from the first game all the way up to the current sequel. I bought an Xbox One mostly so I can play my old 360 games in enhanced form. It's a fact that people have libraries that are massive and in the long run, people will want to be able to access things with ease all in one box. Cloud gaming can also add extra frames to older titles by playing your games on console, then having the cloud draw in-between frames and send them to your console so you get a smoother feel. (on top of AI assisting)

    Both would prepare us for a future where there are no longer an XBox Version and a PC version of a game, but only a (insert cool name here that says windows and xbox and everything) version. This can potentially put Microsoft into a highly advantageous position vs Sony as it would allow Microsoft to leverage their software prowess to gain a massive hardware advantage on the new gen by not having to stay into the easy hardware path to backwards compatibility with AMD. Certainly team Xbox has been unable to differentiate their current hardware from the PS5 as both consoles run pretty well the same hardware and I have the feeling that Sony would be unable to do a drastic switch like this without losing their existing digital library. That's what happened with the PS2 and PS3, they couldn't do software emulation of those 2 gens at all when they switched to different hardware platforms each gen. Looking at what Apple has been able to do with custom ARM-based chips in a highly portable format certainly makes this look very, very promising for getting some insane handhelds as well. All of this makes me quite excited about what the future holds for high end gaming in the console and handheld space.

    • @G360LIVE
      @G360LIVE 4 месяца назад +4

      What's highly advantageous? Without exclusive games, the next Xbox won't sell very well, and that's a fact. The vast majority of people don't buy next gen consoles to play past gen games. In our hardcore gamer bubble, we think that kind of thing matters to a lot of people, but it really doesn't.

    • @AlDim000
      @AlDim000 4 месяца назад +1

      @@G360LIVE Yeah, no. One of the main reasons for the PS5's decent success is the major back catalog advantage Sony had thanks to the PS4.
      The whole old-school exclusives game is very much played out for everyone except Nintendo. Sony is already putting all of their top "exclusives" on PC with a slight delay and have stated they will continue to do that. If Microsoft manages to execute some blended Xbox-PC ARM-powered play right, they'll be in a really good spot. Sony are not that strong of a software company, so chances are that they will be unable to compete with a potential highly innovative new console tech from Microsoft as they would have to stay with AMD for that easy hardware compatibility with the vast digital libraries that their customers have built up over two gens. Simply dropping your old store and moving on like in the old days is not an option.
      Regardless, even if you assume that the only thing that affects the console market are exclusives, MS is one of the biggest publishers in the world, so if they felt this was the play, they would absolutely go for it. However, Microsoft will do what they think will get them the most money, not what fanboys in either camp are ranting about. There is zero chance they will suddenly pivot back towards the aging exclusives-first closed platform business model.

  • @cargorunner9960
    @cargorunner9960 4 месяца назад +1

    "Forward Compatibility" is just another word for "Sell the same digital games forever". With the xbox one Microsoft only preserved the games they could sell. Less than half of the xbox 360 games were made backwards compatible and very few xbox OG games. It's more about making money than preservation. They could have used their tech on all games and just sold some of those games digitally. But they didn't, there is no money in preserving games you can't sell. But I still really appreciate them deciding to invest in the technology & they got some great results. If they did not take people's digital libraries forward to the next console then there would be a massive backlash destroying the brand. There would also be a massive backlash from all the studios & publishers if suddenly their products could not be sold on the new xbox (or needed a lot of rework and retesting). Can you imagine Amazon selling a new Kindle and saying sorry only 10 books are compatible on the new Kindle? Should we celebrate Amazon investing in forward compatibility? Maintaining their massive digital stores is now critical for these organisations. It is just a case where the goals of the corporation are aligned with the desires of the customer.
    Selling old games is big business which has been proven by Steam. Gamers are notorious for buying too many old games in the steam sales and having backlogs that are too big for one lifetime. We are now at a stage where AI can upscale without developer work and soon AI will be able to translate in real time so even old games that never left Japan can be played around the world. So old games are just getting more and more valuable. And with the move to digital only consoles... "Game Preservation" means re-buying all your favourite physical games digitally. Putting old games on sale is the perfect way of getting more money out of your existing customer base.
    Preservartion on xbox has not been based on popularity, or historical importance, or quality, or any such preservation criteria. Even Halo & Halo 2 were NOT backwards compatible as they wanted to sell remakes instead. But basically, If xbox could sell it, then it was made backwards compatible. They stated that this was because of licensing.They had to get new licenses to make xbox one execulatables. If there is a hardware shift and they need to create new executables again. Then will we have the same licensing issues? Will "Forward Preservation" again be strictly limited to just the games that xbox can still sell? Maybe only part of your current digital library will play on the new generation....

      That's not really true, they did make some games BC that they could not sell. The best example is Too Human, a game that is legally forbidden to be sold by anyone. I believe you can still download it for free, and it's BC.
      There are certainly limitations to the way that MS managed to achieve (partial) BC on Xbox One and Series consoles (which was a huge achievement nevertheless, something that basically nobody thought was possible before MS went ahead and did it anyway), some technical, and some legal. As making games BC in this system hinges on developers and publishers both giving their approval, it's usually aligned with the ability for them (and thus also MS, considering the cut they get from each sale) to make money off of it. Achieving more general emulation that would make everything BC would be the next step, and something that I hope MS (and other platform holders) do manage to achieve in the future. As DF mention, that might (or might not) be something that's a part of the reason for formation of this new team within MS.

The bottom line is, even with just Too Human, it's obvious that making more money (for both themselves, but also their publishing partners who at the end of the day decide what gets the approval for BC, which is a part that often gets forgotten when people put all the blame on Microsoft) was not their only motivation there.

      @@uglyenoughtobewise I do 100% really appreciate that xbox made some games backwards compatible. After all Sony wanted you to buy new games and made ZERO PS3 games backwards compatible. Even for the special playstation celebration consoles Sony did NOT add any backwards compatibility. I have bought xbox consoles ONLY because they added some backwards compatility. BUT this was the 1st time a platform holder added partial backwards compatibility based on what it could sell. Xbox to 360, PS1 to PS2, GBA to DS, DS to 3DS, gamecube to wii, etc. This is backwards compatility for as many games as possible to encourage customer loyalty. The xbox one was a terrible launch. The xbox digital store had few xbox exlclusives. Backwards compatibility was great for them as they desperately needed customer loyalty & exlcusives. They needed more games in their digital store. The resolution & frame rate improvements helped make old games more relevant & sellable. But for preservation it is the lowest backwards compatibity % we have ever seen.

    • @uglyenoughtobewise
      @uglyenoughtobewise 4 месяца назад

      @@cargorunner9960 And again, it's primarily to do with what was actually possible given the hardware. To run PowerPC code on AMD chips, and to do it on a console with the specs that the base Xbox One had was nearly magic. General BC emulation of Xbox 360 software was not possible on that hardware, not with consistent and satisfactory performance. It was either the solution that they've chosen or nothing (or including Xbox 360 chips in Xbox One, which would increase the price at the very least). Unfortunately, that also meant that they had to repackage and redistribute each game over their store. Just putting a 360 disc into your Xbox One or downloading a 360 package and running it directly from that is something that might have been possible with a general emulation solution, but it was NOT possible with the solution that they had to use. So licensing had to be sorted out for each and every game that was to be made BC, because it needed to be repackaged and redistributed under different terms. And once you'd sorted that out and the game is already on the store - because it has to be for their BC solution to work - why not offer it for sale again? It benefits everyone, most of all people who didn't get to buy it and play it before. While you seem to see it as MS only made compatible those games that it could sell, the truth is a bit different - they HAD to have licensing sorted out in order to make them BC, and at that point it would have benefitted no one if they didn't offer them for sale as well.
      Then there were other hurdles, like licensing for songs or video clips that some games used. Like it was explained to us at some point, most games that used licensed music only had the license for personal use, because the broadcasting license was more expensive, and back when those games were made there was no real use for that. But on Xbox One every game could be broadcast over Twitch or Mixer or whatever, and suddenly the personal license was legally not enough. That all had to renenegotiated, and that cost publishers actual additional money. They hoped to offset that by selling more copies.
      Finally, there were technical difficulties regarding the performance, which I already touched upon. Which begs the question - and I'd like to see DF tackle that - if Xbox One support gets dropped at some point, could MS bring forward more BC games, those that would not hit satisfactory performance target on Xbox One, but could on Series consoles and beyond? But of course, since that's presumably also what's holding back a more general emulation solution, there might be no need for that at that point.

    i say ita digital rights locker, similar to movies anywhere. moviesanywhere allows you to share your digital film rights across various connected digital libraries. such as apple tv, vudu, youtube movies etc..., the idea being when you purchase a movie that participates in the movies anywhere program its available across all your connected platforms. xbox needs to ensure our libraries and cloud storage in the event that they were to go bust by having seamless integration with platforms like playstation and steam.

    For me Forward compatibility would be to design games with available but currently impossible to run settings.
    There is a lot of older games that I missed and that it would be lovely for em to know I have there to play , but I don’t because graphics just look old and I don’t like that. For some of us it’s hard to revert to outdated graphics once our eyes got used to playing games with better graphics.
    This would have 2 benefits, 1) newer consoles could make actual noticeable image differences running old games, aside from just higher res and higher fps.
    2)Enthusiast level OC gamers with high end pcs , could get access to settings consoles can’t run

      @gothpunkboy89 4 месяца назад

      The people that have that problem with older games can probably be counted with one hand. That said your idea would be incredibly difficult to actually pull off. Simply because there would be no way to test it on the current system and no way to know how powerful the next gen system would be. Let alone trying to predict 2 or 3 gens from then.

      @@gothpunkboy89 man , what are you talking about. It isn’t hard at all. Just look at Cyberoubk with Path tracing. It looks amazing but even a 4090 can’t do 30fps at native 4k with it enabled.
      S couple generations in the future it will be possible, the game is future proofed.
      Crysis, another future proofed game.
      Avatar frontiers of Pandora even has hidden settings that you can unlock through a command.
      There is nothing hard about future proofing graphics , you really just made a nonsense comment no offense intended!
      Making games optimized is what’s hard , but getting amazing visuals isn’t.
      That’s why even 15 year ago , we could see mind blowing ultra life like graphics on pre-rendered scenes , technology to achieve those graphics already existed , what we didn’t had was the hardware to run them in real time at acceptable frame rates.
      There is nothing “hard” about making games that have an “ultra graphic settings” or even “beyond ultra” settings , that even a 4090 can’t run currently but that future gpus will , keeping the game relevant.
      What’s harder though, is actually making those settings worth it, there’s no point of having a “future proof” ultra settings preset if it looks 2% better than the easy to run high settings.

      @@lawyerlawyer1215 CP 2077 isn't future proofing as you say you want. The game already comes with 4k graphics and ray tracing. That isn't future proofing. You will have the same old graphics today as you will in 10 years. Unless CDPR updates the game.
      If you can't run the game with current systems then how do you expect to bug fix them if there is an issue? Do you expect a studio to go back to a 10 year old game and start releasing updates when the new RTX7000 series is finally able to run the game? Why would they do that?
      Also you mention Crysis but you forget the max resolution from launch is 1080p. The biggest issue with running that game in the original release version is how single core it is focused. Because it was created when people thought there would simply be one single massive core. And we went down the other path of multiple cores and multiple threads.

    I know this is an Xbox aimed video, but i am a lover of all games, no matter the platform, and i wish all this console war and console v PC war would just stop.
    But it has been shown, that gamer's today, are playing older games.
    I for one, on PC, i am playing through all the old Delta Force games, Phantasmagoria, Alone In The Dark and they are so great.
    But i tell ya, if Xbox and PS just LISTENED too fans and remade or polished older games, it would boost moral so much.
    I mean imagine, if the treatment that the recent Tomb Raider games got, was put on too
    Project Gotham Racing, Destruction Derby, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, Fear Effect, SOCOM NAVY SEALS, Original Rainbow 6, Medal Of Honour, Medal Of Honour 2, Nuclear Strike, Soviet Strike..... Right there, if those games alone were released with a touch of love and polish, it would be amazing.
    Instead we just get this crap.
    Bring back some classic games across all platforms.

    to DF Clips ..or whoever... any idea on specs for ps6 .. seems to me just some of the games are on disc and from what i heard even having a game disc you still have to download the game to console ..is every ps5 and potential ps6 game going ot be all digital and few disc based? i havnt bought a ps5 yet and i was wondering if near everyone has a digital game library for ps5 then use those games onto ps6 library ..i read a game studio literally made a racing game to be played online only then when they stopped having the game on a server they literally removed the game that was bought by thousands of players. with crunchroll removing paid digital online anime from customers it just seems iffy time for customers when it comes to digital fronier i hope a lot of games are on disc
