Just to point out a bit more about the story, the reason Timber writes to Diddy for help is because his parents are vacationing on DK isle and the reason that the cast is racing is that Wizpig will only leave if someone manages to beat him and it just so happens Timber’s island is renowned for its racing tracks, leading to Drumstick (the island’s champion racer) to challenge Wizpig and just.. disappear before the events of the game, hence why Diddy (and by extension, Banjo, Conker, Dixie and Tiny) are called in to help. Krunch tags along to hopefully spy on the group for K. Rool.
Come on man, the hidden key behind the bridge in Boulder Canyon was pretty genious - to me this is a pretty memorable moment in the game, took me ages to find as a kid :D
As an obsessive fan of this game who's been speedrunning it for years, I love getting these fresh, casual-play perspectives into the tracks. There's a lot of takes that I can follow and others that totally blindsided me, and I think it's a more fun video for it. In speedrunning, you can get so focused on mechanics and speed that it's easy to take the level design and "fun factor" for granted, which changes the list a lot over the years. My personal favourite track is Jungle Falls, and, contrary to the hot taker critics, I agree that Boulder Canyon deserves its spot ;) (or at least close to it)
While you described the pirate ships in Treasure Caves, I was reminded of that Strong Bad E-mail where he made fun of mini-golf tropes, like the "there is a statue several feet away outside the field of play" course
Seeing Hot Top Volcano so high on the list gives me joy as I am very nostalgic for that course. It being a lava level, the great paths for the plane, the music for the track.
3:43 There’s more! In diddy Kong racing DS, there’s special coins you can collect to upgrade your item even further! The oil slicks give you fake rare coins that act as mines, your one missile becomes 3 homing missiles, with the boost it puts you in autopilot and basically has you do a QTE that will give you 3 huge boosts… and I’m still not sure what the upgraded magnet does!
Boulder Canyon would be so much better with players and CPUs opening drawbridges, but unfortunately everything in DKR only happens in your vision. That's why NPCs can't spin on oil or get stuck in bubbles, you have to turn around and put them on your vision. One thing Mario Kart 64 was better.
It more or less evens out. Sure Mario Kart 64 will slow down the AI when they hit obstacles. But because of memory limitations, much like Diddy Kong Racing, if you don't witness it happen, the effects on them will not be nearly as pronounced. And because of Mario Kart 64's rubber banding, they'll get an immediate speed boost to catch up to you pretty quickly. So basically, in both games, blasting AI opponents with projectiles while they're in your sight is going to give you the best advantage.
I'm glad I didn't have to scroll too far to see this. Isn't it kind of silly that you make a short stereotypical Italian man, who loves pasta and has an extremely cartoonish Italian accent. Timeless, video game icon. Make a Indian elephant and give him an exaggerated, but comparatively less cartoonish, Indian accent. Disgusting, dated racism.
That's the exact video I was wishing to see here! By the way. you can use airplanes in Darkmoon Cavers if I'm not mistaken and you just fly trough the loops to the end of the loop ^^
Honestly, Tricky used to anger me so much, but once I figured out his pattern, he wasn't so bad. Bubbler, on the other hand, was the bane of my childhood, and it astounds me how so many call Bluey the harder boss when he's too slow to be a genuine challenge. You pass him once and he'll likely never be ahead of you again.
Some characters are really bad on the hovercraft, and Bluey really punishes that. His second race with Pipsy is probably the second worst I can think of (first clearly being Krunch Wizpig 1)
I'll be the lighter with Boulder Canyon. It's by far the best Hover Track precisely because of the logs and the bridge. Even the music changes depending on which section of the level you're at, great design over all. That said, my personal ranking: Battle Tracks: 1. Fire Mountain 2. Icicle Pyramid 3. Darkwater Beach 4. Smokey Castle The first three are all almost as equally good IMO, but the Castle is simply bad. Boss Tracks: 1. Wizpig 1 - likely the most memorable race in the game. Truly a shame it's not available in multiplayer. 2. Wizpig 2. 3. Bluey (seriously, beating Bluey with Pipsy is absolutely hardcore) 4. Smokey 5. Ahoho or however the octopus thing is called 6. Tricky. Standard Tracks: 1. Haunted Woods 2. Spacedust Alley 3. Star City 4. Spaceport Alpha 5. Jungle Falls 6. Windmill Plains 7. Boulder Canyon 8. Hot Top Volcano 9. Darkmoon Caverns 10. Walrus Cove 11. Everfrost Peak 12. Greenwood Village 13. Frosty Village 14. Crescent Island 15. Fossil Canyon 16. Pirate Lagoon 17. Treasure Caves 18. Ancient Lake 19. Snowball Valley 20. Whale Bay
I loved this game back in the day. I really liked the concept of having some kind of story mode. Graphics where so much better than Mario Kart 64 (I played DKR before MK64, so my disappointment ended up being even bigger). Music was so on point, with catchy tunes that would keep you on a high pace.
Well, I can't say I completely agree with the ranking and some of the criteria used but hey, the space levels do indeed deliver interesting track layouts and great references to what would come two years later: Jet Force Gemini, one of the best N64 games Rare could deliver (Perfect Dark >>> Goldeneye)!
Regardless of the track’s quality, we all agree that the soundtrack is amazing right? And considering that Conker and Banjo star their own games, I wonder how a conversation between them and Cranky Kong would go. Anyways, I’ve always had this dumb thought of a Diddy Kong Racing sequel where Kirby and some anime and cartoon characters join in.
Supposedly, the story goes the Tiger owns the island. Drumstick the champion of the time gets challenged by wiz pig. Unfortunately, he loses wiz becomes champion the guardians, regardless of the champions intentions they are loyal.
Sorry to make a second comment but there’s 2 things that I think are interesting based on your comments. 1) The star fox adventures jab is funnier when you find out that it initially was supposed to be a sequel to Diddy Kong racing with Timber as the protagonist traveling to a mysterious Dinosaur island, traveling back in time and teaming up with a younger version of Tricky. Hence the name of the Triceratops character in both Dinosaur planet and Star Fox adventures was later called Prince Tricky. 2) Your Disney park comparisons are pretty accurate as that was the original inspiration for the games artstyle with the characters (Outside of Diddy. Banjo, Conker and to a lesser extent Pipsy due to her being a rework of a canceled rare n64 game) being based on the mascots at said parks. Anyways good luck with the DK64 ranking!
Meandering mountain's "trap tunnels" literally have X's marked above them to indicate that you SHOULDN'T go in there because these are the exits of the actual shortcuts. Also, the way you describe most tracks as mid or underwhelming makes it sound like you don't actually like the game that much. I get that this isn't your actual opinion on the game and you're only ranking them relative to the quality of the game as a whole, but if you think about it, none of these tracks are objectively "bad", even boulder canyon, it's still enjoyable.
He's also not sharp turning, which would likely explain why he struggles using the objective best (base roster) character in the game. I'm thinking he's not very good at this game...Which makes me wonder how he beat Wizpig if he doesn't drop boost or sharp turn... Mind, that doesn't mean he can't have an opinion on the game. Just sayin.
@@TheDapperDragon Yea I'll admit I'm not an expert on this game. But oddly enough? Doing the whole 'let go of acceleration before boost' trick on Wiz Pig didn't work too good for me? Like I didn't see much difference between Green and Purple Boosts. I know the trick but it didn't actually do much for me? Which either means I'm so bad at this game it's somehow an equalizing force or there's an additional trick I didn't pick up on. The lack of sharp turns meanwhile yea that's me not getting the tech down good.
@@Man-A-T No stress. I know the tone is terrible, but I meant what I said. You could be terrible, and you'd still have every right to have your opinion. And you're clearly not. You finished the game, after all
Okay so to clarify, Taj does a miserable job explaining how the boost trick works. While the part about letting go of the acceleration is true, he fails to mention that you also need to keep holding off the button to get the full effect of the boost. You need to hold off until you see the smoke trails, then you can press the gas again. Also he fails to mention that this trick works for any boost, not just the zippers. For example you can do the same thing with the boost power-up obtained by the blue balloons.
I agree that the hovercraft is REALLY finicky to play with, and yeah, Diddy Kong Racing has the Disney inspiration, which is why most of the musical tracks has that vibe, the characters that were created when it was called PRO AM 64, etc. The DS-exclusive tracks should have portraits of the Kong family all over the place, which would be the only way to distinguish them over the other tracks, but I guess emulation issues happen, but yeah boring set which could've been placed as the super secret 6th world hub Kongo Resort and have Funky Kong in his Plane Barrel as a boss around Kongo Island WITH a remix of Funky Kong's plane travel from DKC (that would've been cool)

To be honest I don’t think Taj is that racist, he’s an Indian Elephant it’s a neat idea to make him a genie, and he gives me the same vibes as apu so what’s wrong with a thick accent and usage of tropes and homages of Indian culture
The only incentive you have to play Mario Kart singleplayer is to unlock cups, racers and cars, if there even are unlockables. I aprpeciate how you weave in bewteen positive and negative criticism pretty early on. Plenty of rankings solely focus on what is lacking about what is being ranked until the very end of the list and that can give the impression that the person doing the ranking think 80% of the game is bad which is more tedious than fun to listen to.

Yeah, I believe the reason they're racing _each other_ is to determine who among them is the best racer, so they can send THEM to challenge Wizpig.
