I do think it’s funny that this is the last game where DK Jr. was relevant like afterwards he and Cranky were basically succeeded by the modern Donkey Kong, I like to think he’s enjoying his retirement. 15:24 you see him toss away mushrooms before the fight implying he’s chowing down on them to grow giant, this is supported by the cutscene afterwards where Pauline, Mario, Donkey Kong and Jr. end up in the mushroom kingdom afterwards.
This is some super high quality stuff! Your channel definitely deserves more attention, and I think you’ve inspired me to make some Donkey Kong content of my own at some point; I adore the series
The twist at the end of the opening stages where you realize this is only the beginning is so great and the game design, by and large, is exceptional for this title. It's one of the 10 best Game Boy games.
This game was such a treasure finding as a kid! I legit thought it was only the first 4 levels mimicing the arcade game only to find it's one of the best action puzzle games ever! Also, really love your thumbnail artist. Chef's kiss~
This game could be considered the Spiritual Predescessor to the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. I mean, that series uses a lot of mechanics and ideas that premiered here.
funny cause the bit in the intro is actually the exact opposite to how I hear people talk about these games nowadays; DK94 is hailed as an absolute grandclass masterpiece and one of the best gameboy games (I agree), whereas the donkey kong land games are generally seen as lesser more forgettable titles compared to their bigboy home console counterparts lol
So we’re not expecting any Donkey Kong Land lists then? I found the first DKL more memorable than its sequels, so if you don’t have much to say about the first in the series then DKL2 and 3 are probably not going to be included either
Yes. I sadly will not be looking at DK Land. I might look at the trilogy as part of a short general video but the important thing to know is: I didn't grow up with them so I don't have much nostalgia or any strong opinions on them either.
that's cause dkc2 and 3 are near direct ports of the snes games, only thing they significantly change to my knowledge is Bleak the Snowman actually having a proper platforming boss fight in land 3 instead of the shooting gallery thing in the snes and gba versions with that goofy-ass jazz-hand seizure animation lol. Donkey Kong land 1, on the other hand, is actually an original uniquely crafted experience made for the Gameboy's hardware.
Apologies in advance. This is gonna be a long one, but it took me forever to figure out what was going on and almost no one talks about it, so I wanted to make sure the info got out there! One bit of caution to anyone looking to visit the game, now, since you can't get it through legitimate channels, anyone attempting... other means need to consider _how_ you're emulating it. You either need to play it through a SNES emulator replicating the Super Game Boy functionality (very tricky to set up but doable) or ensure your Game Boy Emulator is NOT trying to emulate a Super Game Boy. You absolutely want to ensure it's in classic GB or GBC mode though most will try to run it in SGB mode if you let them. The thing is, being one of a handful of games specifically designed with built-in SGB functionality, it includes some extra functionality that takes advantage of the SNES hardware, if it's available. For the most part it's just a few extra soundbites, like Pauline actually crying out for "Help!" at the start of a level, but the thing that makes this so critical is the ending. The credits song actually has a remixed version that uses the SNES sound chip. Obviously, a GB emulator isn't set up to do that, so if it's running in SGB mode, when you beat the game, you get to watch the credits roll in complete silence. Anyone who's played the game on original hardware knows that's an absolute crime! The credits music is an absolute bop, so make sure you don't miss out! Either make certain you're emulating proper Game Boy hardware, or figure out how to get a SNES emulator to handle the Super Game Boy functionality for you. (Personally, I genuinely prefer the original GB music, but that might just be familiarity bias. Having grown up playing the hell out of that game on that gray brick, that's the version I know and love, and as much as I love the SNES sound chip and the ear candy it's capable of, I think the Super Game Boy credit's music is actually a step backwards.)
How are you counting 105 levels? Construction Site - 4 Big City - 8 Forest - 12 Ship - 8 Jungle - 12 Desert - 12 Airplane - 8 Iceberg - 12 Rocky Valley - 16 Tower - 8 That equals 96!!!
From the title I thought it was gonna be ranking the Worlds of all three Land games together😂, since the levels are so tiny it might as well be worth ranking them as a collective To be honest, I'd love if you could tackle the Land games like that? I think you could get more out of a video by ranking all three of them together
Donkey Kong Land 3 Colour version is great to play especially. But, considering it mirrors the original quite a bit. It may not be necessary to do a video for that or it's predecessor.
The DK Land games would’ve benefited from being more unique than the Country games, much like how the Mario Land games were clearly different entries than the NES and SNES Mario games
When I first played Mario vs Donkey Kong on the Switch, I was thinking, “Why is the soundtrack so underwhelming and forgettable for a Mario game?” DK on Game Boy nails it in this aspect.
But there is 3 DK’s Cranky was always meant to be the modern Donkey Kong’s grandfather and the modern Donkey Kong is supposed to be a separate character from the arcade days. The only game that contradicts this is DK64 but it’s ignored afterwards for the Grandfather story.
@smashers6971 you're wrong there are just two Donkey Kong the father Donkey Kong Jr the current Donkey Kong the son and there is a holy ghost that's wrinkly kong
This game is the stuff of dreams. I can't believe such a quality game released on the lil' ol' Gameboy
I do think it’s funny that this is the last game where DK Jr. was relevant like afterwards he and Cranky were basically succeeded by the modern Donkey Kong, I like to think he’s enjoying his retirement.

15:23 nah man he got his potential unlocked by super kong guru.

"... and be sure to join us next time, when we take a look back at a kart game and trigger silver coin challenge PTSD in the 'Over 30' demographic."
I don't know why the intro animation of grandpa dk hitting dk Jr. has me rofling, and I haven't rofled in a long time. Lol

Rocky Valley dragging mirrors Krem Cauldron dragging.
That's all.
#1: The DK Cooper (Kongper?) reference was right there
I've been stuck on the Jungle for the last few months I really wanna play Airplane, good vid!
How are you counting 105 levels?
Construction Site - 4
Big City - 8
Forest - 12
Ship - 8
Jungle - 12
Desert - 12
Airplane - 8
Iceberg - 12
Rocky Valley - 16
Tower - 8
That equals 96!!!
... that equals 100? Even missing Tower 9.
Like you're right I was wrong but so are you.
@Man-A-T ok. I didn't realize 9-9 was a separate stage. But using my calculator, it says 99.
@@michaelhockaday7426Literally impossible seen as you’re just adding even numbers and managed to get an odd number.
@Perceptive-Abyss apparently the tower, world 9, has 9 levels if you include the boss fight. That's 99.
Yeah you're both wrong, there are actually 101 levels in total
You can pick up the chicken enemies and throw them into each other to kill the first two making it way easier
5-11 has a fun glitch where Mario can fall forever if you put two blocks with a gap between them
I'd personally put the Pyramid world at the top. I just dig it's main theme song.
From the title I thought it was gonna be ranking the Worlds of all three Land games together😂, since the levels are so tiny it might as well be worth ranking them as a collective
To be honest, I'd love if you could tackle the Land games like that? I think you could get more out of a video by ranking all three of them together
@Man-A-T
I know you're only doing rankings for (the Donkey Kong Country) games, but would also rank the episodes from the cartoon? Just curious...
Donkey Kong Land 3 Colour version is great to play especially. But, considering it mirrors the original quite a bit. It may not be necessary to do a video for that or it's predecessor.
Cranky Kong: I can be big if I want, but I don't wanna
The DK Land games would’ve benefited from being more unique than the Country games, much like how the Mario Land games were clearly different entries than the NES and SNES Mario games
So when will you rank dkl levels
17:45 you are supposed to just... pick them up and throw one to another.....like super mario bros 2...
fun fact, theres synthesized voices if you put this thing in a super game boy. pauline sounds… really weird.
Plane is like the worst one lol
When I first played Mario vs Donkey Kong on the Switch, I was thinking, “Why is the soundtrack so underwhelming and forgettable for a Mario game?” DK on Game Boy nails it in this aspect.
Here to see whether you're a 3 DK heathen or a proper two DK believer.
EDIt: Good man
But there is 3 DK’s Cranky was always meant to be the modern Donkey Kong’s grandfather and the modern Donkey Kong is supposed to be a separate character from the arcade days. The only game that contradicts this is DK64 but it’s ignored afterwards for the Grandfather story.

@@orsonzeddnope, you’re wrong there’s 3 DK’s and you can never change that. Rare attempted to make it 2 in 64 but it never played out
I don't care DK is DK regardless. and cranky says bullshit
@Saetta06 he also says smfoght my son in the ring of kong
also play Donkey Kong Land: New Color Version
