That's a bold claim considering he doesn't even seem to know the full titles of both the sequels to DKC. He gets it wrong multiple times. Pretty sloppy. He also makes alot of assumptions. Feels like there's something wrong with the video. Perhaps (over-)use of AI? The Gaming Historian is much better and factual imo.
I love his bold claim! I know the full titles but I cut it short so I don’t stutter all over myself and do 20 takes when recording. There is zero AI in any of my videos. No wiki either. It’s all pulled from original magazines and videos from the time. Yes assumptions! Opinion pieces have that. Maybe you would be better over at that other channel I’m sure the 23 videos he made this year were much better than the 23 I’ve made so far this year and next year he will make another 20 that are far far better than the 20 I’ll make.
This is exactly the type of context-setting coverage I want DKC to get! It's such a shame that so many half-hearted retrospectives fail to paint the whole picture of where Nintendo was in 1994 and why the big ape was such an industry-changing deal.

Hey my man! I’m doing fine don’t worry! Yes 94 was great for music. The whole run 90-97 was!! That started my media career because I wanted to be in the radio playing those songs so bad!
I still have my promotional VHS tape Nintendo sent me in the mail (I believe a few weeks before launch) and it completely sold me on asking for it that Christmas. I believe I found all or almost all the secrets and it was one of those truly special games at the time and all these years later. I know the majority prefer DKC2 as the best in the series (and you’re not wrong), but DKC is still my favorite by a small margin and will be timeless to me for the rest of my life and in my top favorites for SNES. I still get goosebumps playing the “Snow Barrel Blast” stage with the snow continuously getting more intense accompanied with the music and those barrels you had to get down with near perfection.
With the Gaming Historian on at least a temporary hiatus, GTV Japan is my nomination to assume the lead role in You Tube based video game retrospectives. I enjoyed both, and Gaming Historian may have had a larger audience, but I see no loss in the quality, depth or painstaking care with which these retrospectives are done if GTV Japan is the one leading the way with them. This was another EXCELLENT addition.
The 1990s was one of the greatest decades for video games. The great 16-bit wars, Playstation coming on the rise, new franchises like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Gran Turismo, Nintendo 64 taking Mario, and The Legend of Zelda to 3D.
The 1990's isn't one of... it's THE best decade for gaming of all time. You can rifle off a list longer than You Tube will allow of the franchises just knocking grand slam after grand slam out of the park. Sonic, Mario, DK, Star Fox, F-Zero, Mortal Kombat, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Toe Jam and Earl, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, TMNT the list goes on and on and on and on... The games weren't 90 hour long slogs with tons of filler, they weren't broken with day 1 patches and 15 Gb downloads, they hit the PERFECT balance of Quality AND Quantity of games across the board and I don't think we'll EVER see another decade in gaming like it again. If you lived it, consider yourself lucky. It was the best time to be alive as a gamer.
This was a wild time to be alive... I still remember how absolutely blown away on one of DKC's snow levels - the one where a blizzard slowly washes over the stage as you progress through it. Nothing like that had even been done before. It was incredible!
Man I remember the " 'tude " era of gaming. Seems like we got a new anthropomorphic mascot with an attitude monthly back then and only a few of them actually worked.

The original DKC is one of my favorite games ever, but the fact that we got 3 DKC's 3 years straight and never a proper sequel to Super Mario World in all the years of the system has always been mind boggling to me.

It's the 90's and you are eating a Lunchable, drinking a Capri Sun, and watching The Adventures Of Pete & Pete. During the commercial break, an ad for this masterpiece comes on. You run to your land-line telephone and call your friend to ask if he saw it to. You beg your parents to take you to the local video rental store and pray that they still have a copy in stock. On the way home, you stop and get some of that good, good 90's Pizza Hut. Simpler times. Better times.
Dude. Kind of off topic a bit at first. I’m 35 and have cancer and going through chemo. It’s fucking killing me. Sometimes it’s so bad I go into a euphoric state and I go down in memories. Strong. I think about watching are you afraid of the dark, Pete and Pete, salute your shorts…eating McDonald’s and Pizza Hut. Going to blockbuster…playing NES/SNES, Sega…it’s like I can actually relive those memories for a bit. This shit really makes me miss the 90s. Hope you’re well.
Great video. For someone who lived through that era it truly was a golden age. Just hearing that music brings back so many memories. I remember watching the promotional VHS a million times before Christmas and my Dad commenting that it can't look that good on the snes. That video also had a KI teaser at the end i remember. Funny thing about hubris is that its cyclical. Whoever gets on top one generation then screws it up the next generation.
I remember 1994 so well,, especially the "fight" between my neighbor and I. We were both huge fans of RPGs and pretty much any first party Nintendo/Sega title that would come out. According to him I was supposed to ask for Final Fantasy 3/6 while he would ask for Donkey Kong Country for Christmas that year, that way we could swap games or head to the other's house to play. Well the big day comes around and we both got DKC! Turns out my parents figured I really wanted it because they saw the promotional VHS tape I had got along with the whole t-shirt mentioned in the opening text (which I definitely wore a ton, most memorably during a field trip to Niagra Falls). We both did get Final Fantasy a few months later for our respective birthdays but it caused a rift between us for a week or two, being 10/11 years old and video games being the height of our pre-teen drama.
Aw man! That’s worse than the time I let my friend borrow the Genesis and he rented a game for it and then my mom insisted we take it back and he was mad by he didn’t want to waste $2!
I still have my (clean) DKC T-shirt from Babbage's, thank you very much! I got the game, the shirt, and the DKC Nintendo guide all on Christmas '94. I'm a true believer!
Fall of 94 is one of my favorite gaming times from my teenage years. My birthday is in November and all I wanted in 1994 was Final Fantasy 3 (6) and DKC. My dad got me both of them and after I unwrapped them he told me the guy at Software Etc. broke the street date by selling him DKC early so I could have it for my birthday. I'm sure retailers didn't care as much about breaking street dates back then as long as it was sort of close. But either way, that was some of the most fun I'd ever had gaming. It was overwhelming getting both of those games at the same time and I'd stay up late playing both of them back in '94. Thirty years later, I still fire them up regularly

9:40 I am 37 years old so I'm old enough to remember how mind blowing graphics like these were, especially on a cartridge based system. FX chip be damned, THAT was possible on the SNES? We were wowed. Great video man
It's important to understand that while Sega had the lead in the early years of the 16-bit generation, it was because for one to two of those years it didn't even have any 16-bit competition, and the rest was largely Nintendo closing the gap with SNES until it naturally took the lead and I think kept it thereafter. I think there were still some months the Genesis outsold the SNES when both systems were on the market at the same time, but it certainly wasn't just a case of the Genesis always outselling the SNES every month of every year until Donkey Kong Country came along and changed the game. It makes you wonder what the situation would have been like if the Genesis hadn't had that one to two year head start to build up a lead of multiple millions of units before the SNES even entered the market. PS. Man, I reckon that 1994 CES must have been dang exciting.
Genesis didn't even sell 2M units before the release of the Snes in North America. The Snes stayed in the 16-bit market at the end to make up for Genesis early start. 1993 was the best-selling year of the 16-bit era in North America. It was also the year with the biggest discrepancy in market share between the two companies. 1992 4.5M Genesis to 4.9M Snes 1993 5.9M Genesis to 4.4M Snes 1994 4M Genesis to 3.7M Snes 1995 2.1M Genesis to 2.7M Snes
I Iived back then, no one knew what a Genesis was until sonic 1 came out. Sega of America’s 2nd ceo tom kalinsk was able to get it into major retailers and break the video console hate, once that happened people started to buy it and it started to be seen as another Nintendo, before that it was just the nes.
@@dcboys4195 Yeah, 1993 was the year Mortal Kombat released for the two systems. And we all know what that did for Genesis and what it didn't do for SNES. And I can imagine a world where things would have been very different if that first Mortal Kombat game on SNES had included all the blood, gore and fatalities. But what ifs, eh. Also, America is not the only place these two systems sold.
I remember when this game came out. Best Buy used to have a bunch of TVs bundled together to make a large display that hovered over the center of the show floor. The game was like nothing we'd seen at that point. There was even a raffle to win a huge, life-size DK plush. Man, it was so cool.

This is the best DKC retrospective I've seen. Great job! Small correction tho - Rare developed the GBA DKC ports as they still made and released GBA and DS games as Microsoft allowed them to since they weren't competing in the handheld business.
i just thought about it today.. this might be my fav game of all time. im 41 but i rememeber being 12 playing DK DK2 and DK3 and its the only game my mom liked to play with me
I like DK Country but never thought it was in the same league as Sonic. I like Donkey Kong JR, so I enjoyed seeing him grow up and be the main character.
That Act 4 title is wild... lol... anyways, DKC was one of the first games I bought for the SNES when I first moved to the US back in '95... such a great game! I got all the sequels and player's guide as well.. and even participated in the Blockbuster competition... sigh... fun times... lol
'Total Magazine' wasn't the only Nintendo Magazine in the UK at the time, I remember there being other ones such as 'N-Force' and 'Super Play'. I only bring this up because 'Nintendo Magazine System' (which I used to get every month) had a massive 32 page DKC review, which they also gave a score of 97%. It's mostly just screenshots, but I can remember as a kid looking over them again and again for like a month and a half until I finally got the game for Christmas. I'd read it so much that some of the pages in the mag had started to come loose.
Great video! Thank you for making. Only one minor correction is that Rare did make the DKC ports to GBA. Microsoft let them work on GBA games since they didn’t consider the GBA competition.
That was an exceptional retrospective. Man, you are really on the top tier of RUclips retro gaming content. I had a ZX Spectrum when I was a child, and the Stamper brother's games on the system were impressive even back then. They were always two and a half steps ahead of almost everyone else. Heck, for my money, Jet Pac is as good as Pac-Man, Galaga or Donkey Kong. I remember when DKC was announced. I was (and I still am) a Sega guy, but the images of the game made me realize that the SNES was really ahead of the Genny in the graphics department. Luckily, when Toy Story and Sonic 3D Blast were released, the Genny showed the world that pre-rendered graphics were possible on the system, so my Sega fan pride was somewhat restored. The gameplay of DKC was really good, but not to the level of awesomeness of Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, or other first-party Nintendo Games. I played the heck out of the game, though. Your conclusion to the video was awesome: We were really the winners of the greatest Console War of all, no doubt about that. We got amazing games on both systems, and you could usually play SNES at a friend's house if you were a Sega kid, and vice versa. Amazing times, really. Great video, man. You deserve a heck of a lot more viewers and subs.
I really would have liked to talk more about Rare, this video would have gone out of control, It was all over the place already. It was 12000 words and I cut it down to about 7500 but maybe next time. They literally made more NES games than Nintendo! And I guess they had a separate company that did those ZX games, I'm not so familiar with them, but people loved them! 🍌
@@GTV-Japan Dude, you could have made a killer two-parter! Back in the ZX Spectrum days, the Stampers founded Ultimate Play The Game and made some amazing games. They must have been in their late teens or early twenties. Then, they sold Ultimate and created Rare. Those early Ultimate games, especially Jet Pac and Pssst would have been a great success if released in the arcades. The Speccy, the Famicom and the Genesis are the systems that created and cemented my love for gaming, and most Ultimate games were my favorites on the Spectrum. You should try them via emulation; it is really great stuff.
Excellent documentary. Really takes me back to that time and my youth. How lucky we were to grow up with such games and innovation. This video kept me glued throughout. Well made and well done.❤

Actually it was the Sonic 3 video that said that, but I have been talking about it for a while now. I thought it would be cool to have a part one and then a long wait for part two and three to give people something to look forward to. Maybe like, oh what a bad day I had, but its ok because in 2 months that Sonic video is coming out!

It is VERY Sonic-like! The barrels are like the loops and they're are several paths along the way, it is super fast and you lose a lot of lives but its not frustrating as you learn how to go. I'd say its more like Sonic than Mario.
The development of DKC is one of those topics that there is a lot of material about, and for good reason, because at the time it was a massive hit, I personally love the topic and have seen many, and some very good videos about it, but it is always a pleasure to see a subject treat with your personal touch. I remember that the first one I played was DKC 2, which is my favorite of the entire series, and one of my favorite SNES games of all time.
1994 was such a spectacular year for Nintendo, that it was already turning the tides even before Donkey Kong Country shook the entire landscape of console gaming. We saw the likes of Mega Man X, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III, Street Fighter II: Turbo, Super Bomberman 2, etc.
Another incredible and fantastic retrospective. Lots of good memories playing DKC 1 and 2. Can't remember if I ever tried 3. Oddly enough I've never owned the original trilogy physically which I'm trying to correct now if I can get them for a good price. Rare was always such an enigma to me in the late 80s and very early 90s, there was no question their games had their own signature feeling and style. Fascinating company for sure.

Before I dig into this professional tier material done entirely at your own expense and at no financial benefit to you... to give my perspective as a dedicated Sega fan in the early 90's, I was beginning to scratch my head as to why Sega was releasing multiple expensive secondary platforms to the Genesis promising the next generation of gaming, while Nintendo was releasing games with polygonal 3D graphics and Silicon Graphics spritework without any additional hardware purchases required. The one thing I knew for sure was that Sony needed to stick to making TVs and no one would bother with a system with weird symbols on its buttons instead of sensible letters or numbers like a REAL system.
I got to say that i often read and heard complaints that Sony needs to make TVs and Walkmans instead of games. The start button looks like a play button on a VCR! Not good! Well well is Nintendo ever gonna make a TV? NO!! The sputtering was intense! A lot of people can not understand it today but I think you agree that many saw the PSX as another 3DO, a huge rich company releases this big powerful expensive thing but they have no experience in the industry and it was just junk nobody wanted. But then, we played it and saw, hey this is ok! 🍌
Once i saw the donkeykong vountry commercial on tv , i was like “nooo it can’t be that this game is for the snes” But once i realize it was the case i was like “whooaaah the snes is waaaay more advanced then my nes then i was imagine” And so i was jealous on everybody who owned a snes and so i wanted my own snes sooo bad. Then once the second hand game store came around in late 2001, i finally bought my snes and later i bought donkeykong country for it and so i felt myself to be the luckiest man in the world from that point😁
Another mega quality GTV doc! I definitely remember my first time playing DKC , it was at a local arcade chain called Boomerangs. This was right around the release of Sonic and knuckles. They did birthday parties where you could rent out their badass video games room - complete with a big screen TV, surround sound, leather couches and Snes and Genesis + a library of games you could choose to play. The 2 we picked out of course were Sonic and Knuckles and Donkey Kong country, i believe both had been freshly released and we hadnt seen them yet. We had a ton of fun checking out both and they were both so good it was hard to pick the favorite of the day. The graphics of DKC definitely blew everyones little minds though. I was the SNES kid and Birthday Boy was the Sega kid, so he got S&K while I got DKC a few months later. And later swapped snes for genesis so that we both got a chance to play through both games 😊 good times. P.s. i was hella sick with a stomach flu yesterday when this episode launched and you have no idea how much it cheered me up!
Donkey Kong Country was a great game. It had the perfect mix of fun vs challenge that was rarely achieved in the NES days but a staple of good games with the SNES and the industry going forward.
39:15 DKC2 was originally going to be on virtual boy though it was barely in production before it was cancelled so no screen shots or playable demo exist, at least to the public.
How Rare constantly experimented and pushed the limits of their hardware reminds me of how I experimented on the computer. It further motivates me to try more outlandish things, especially for my animations!
This is so incredibly informative, growing up as a kid in early 90s I had a Genesis and loved it but it was a "grass is always greener" situation where I envied people who had SNES and the cool-looking games, lol. I never considered the idea that Sega had a larger market share for a few years.
Some of it was playing fast and loose with the numbers. Sega was “leading” Nintendo in 1992 but only if you ignore the NES. I guess it’s fair. They aren’t equal machines. Also Nintendo of America never announced US revenues but Sega always did. Now it is true the genesis sold more systems every year and more cartridges, and for a long time had more games available but I guess if you only read Nintendo power and didn’t have Sega friends it looks a lot different. 🍌🐒
The thing with the dkc series is that they kept getting better, I’ll think about the music in 3 and want to go play it and experience non-stop awesomeness and design that just pulls you in and keeps you hooked.
I have to give them a lot of credit for this game. They didn't just bring back a character, they didn't just refresh a character, they gave Donkey Kong an entire world and lore that you just wouldn't expect from a franchise they didn't touch since the 80's. Sure, Mario became the breakout star of the Donkey Kong games, but DK didn't become the staple he was until DK 94 and DKC. Now he's getting a significant part of a theme park from a company that once tried to sue Nintendo for his existence. Especially when Nintendo has a LOT of IP just languishing. And I always liked the newer DQ Soft Serve Swirl haired, tie wearing, more athletic and vibrant looking DK and his ape family more than the arcade game versions of the characters.
Many that think this. Once the graphical style wears its welcome, what's left is an alright at best platformer. It's not all bad, but I didn't enjoy a single boss fight (except the last) or minecart level in DKC.
Maaaaan, to this day, I still listen to the DKC OST at least once a month. Even as a youngster, I would pause the game at the end of the minecart level just to listen to the rest of the music. David Wise was just THAT good. I don’t know what he’s doing or where he is now, but I hope he’s living a good life. Thank you, Mr. Wise.

The original DKC is one of my favorite games ever, but the fact that we got 3 DKC's 3 years straight and never a proper sequel to Super Mario World in all the years of the system has always been mind boggling to me.
Nintendo hasn’t wanted to churn out Mario games since the original system.

It's the 90's and you are eating a Lunchable, drinking a Capri Sun, and watching The Adventures Of Pete & Pete. During the commercial break, an ad for this masterpiece comes on. You run to your land-line telephone and call your friend to ask if he saw it to. You beg your parents to take you to the local video rental store and pray that they still have a copy in stock. On the way home, you stop and get some of that good, good 90's Pizza Hut. Simpler times. Better times.
Dude. Kind of off topic a bit at first. I’m 35 and have cancer and going through chemo. It’s fucking killing me. Sometimes it’s so bad I go into a euphoric state and I go down in memories. Strong. I think about watching are you afraid of the dark, Pete and Pete, salute your shorts…eating McDonald’s and Pizza Hut. Going to blockbuster…playing NES/SNES, Sega…it’s like I can actually relive those memories for a bit. This shit really makes me miss the 90s. Hope you’re well.

Great video. For someone who lived through that era it truly was a golden age. Just hearing that music brings back so many memories. I remember watching the promotional VHS a million times before Christmas and my Dad commenting that it can't look that good on the snes. That video also had a KI teaser at the end i remember.
Funny thing about hubris is that its cyclical. Whoever gets on top one generation then screws it up the next generation.

I remember 1994 so well,, especially the "fight" between my neighbor and I. We were both huge fans of RPGs and pretty much any first party Nintendo/Sega title that would come out. According to him I was supposed to ask for Final Fantasy 3/6 while he would ask for Donkey Kong Country for Christmas that year, that way we could swap games or head to the other's house to play. Well the big day comes around and we both got DKC! Turns out my parents figured I really wanted it because they saw the promotional VHS tape I had got along with the whole t-shirt mentioned in the opening text (which I definitely wore a ton, most memorably during a field trip to Niagra Falls). We both did get Final Fantasy a few months later for our respective birthdays but it caused a rift between us for a week or two, being 10/11 years old and video games being the height of our pre-teen drama.
Aw man! That’s worse than the time I let my friend borrow the Genesis and he rented a game for it and then my mom insisted we take it back and he was mad by he didn’t want to waste $2!
I still have my (clean) DKC T-shirt from Babbage's, thank you very much! I got the game, the shirt, and the DKC Nintendo guide all on Christmas '94. I'm a true believer!

Fall of 94 is one of my favorite gaming times from my teenage years. My birthday is in November and all I wanted in 1994 was Final Fantasy 3 (6) and DKC. My dad got me both of them and after I unwrapped them he told me the guy at Software Etc. broke the street date by selling him DKC early so I could have it for my birthday. I'm sure retailers didn't care as much about breaking street dates back then as long as it was sort of close. But either way, that was some of the most fun I'd ever had gaming. It was overwhelming getting both of those games at the same time and I'd stay up late playing both of them back in '94. Thirty years later, I still fire them up regularly

9:40 I am 37 years old so I'm old enough to remember how mind blowing graphics like these were, especially on a cartridge based system. FX chip be damned, THAT was possible on the SNES? We were wowed. Great video man
It's important to understand that while Sega had the lead in the early years of the 16-bit generation, it was because for one to two of those years it didn't even have any 16-bit competition, and the rest was largely Nintendo closing the gap with SNES until it naturally took the lead and I think kept it thereafter. I think there were still some months the Genesis outsold the SNES when both systems were on the market at the same time, but it certainly wasn't just a case of the Genesis always outselling the SNES every month of every year until Donkey Kong Country came along and changed the game.
It makes you wonder what the situation would have been like if the Genesis hadn't had that one to two year head start to build up a lead of multiple millions of units before the SNES even entered the market.
PS. Man, I reckon that 1994 CES must have been dang exciting.
Genesis didn't even sell 2M units before the release of the Snes in North America.
The Snes stayed in the 16-bit market at the end to make up for Genesis early start.
1993 was the best-selling year of the 16-bit era in North America. It was also the year with the biggest discrepancy in market share between the two companies.
1992 4.5M Genesis to 4.9M Snes
1993 5.9M Genesis to 4.4M Snes
1994 4M Genesis to 3.7M Snes
1995 2.1M Genesis to 2.7M Snes
I Iived back then, no one knew what a Genesis was until sonic 1 came out. Sega of America’s 2nd ceo tom kalinsk was able to get it into major retailers and break the video console hate, once that happened people started to buy it and it started to be seen as another Nintendo, before that it was just the nes.
@@dcboys4195 Yeah, 1993 was the year Mortal Kombat released for the two systems. And we all know what that did for Genesis and what it didn't do for SNES. And I can imagine a world where things would have been very different if that first Mortal Kombat game on SNES had included all the blood, gore and fatalities. But what ifs, eh.
Also, America is not the only place these two systems sold.

I remember when this game came out. Best Buy used to have a bunch of TVs bundled together to make a large display that hovered over the center of the show floor. The game was like nothing we'd seen at that point. There was even a raffle to win a huge, life-size DK plush. Man, it was so cool.

This is the best DKC retrospective I've seen. Great job! Small correction tho - Rare developed the GBA DKC ports as they still made and released GBA and DS games as Microsoft allowed them to since they weren't competing in the handheld business.

I like DK Country but never thought it was in the same league as Sonic. I like Donkey Kong JR, so I enjoyed seeing him grow up and be the main character.

That Act 4 title is wild... lol... anyways, DKC was one of the first games I bought for the SNES when I first moved to the US back in '95... such a great game! I got all the sequels and player's guide as well.. and even participated in the Blockbuster competition... sigh... fun times... lol

'Total Magazine' wasn't the only Nintendo Magazine in the UK at the time, I remember there being other ones such as 'N-Force' and 'Super Play'.
I only bring this up because 'Nintendo Magazine System' (which I used to get every month) had a massive 32 page DKC review, which they also gave a score of 97%.
It's mostly just screenshots, but I can remember as a kid looking over them again and again for like a month and a half until I finally got the game for Christmas. I'd read it so much that some of the pages in the mag had started to come loose.

That was an exceptional retrospective. Man, you are really on the top tier of RUclips retro gaming content. I had a ZX Spectrum when I was a child, and the Stamper brother's games on the system were impressive even back then. They were always two and a half steps ahead of almost everyone else. Heck, for my money, Jet Pac is as good as Pac-Man, Galaga or Donkey Kong. I remember when DKC was announced. I was (and I still am) a Sega guy, but the images of the game made me realize that the SNES was really ahead of the Genny in the graphics department. Luckily, when Toy Story and Sonic 3D Blast were released, the Genny showed the world that pre-rendered graphics were possible on the system, so my Sega fan pride was somewhat restored. The gameplay of DKC was really good, but not to the level of awesomeness of Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, or other first-party Nintendo Games. I played the heck out of the game, though. Your conclusion to the video was awesome: We were really the winners of the greatest Console War of all, no doubt about that. We got amazing games on both systems, and you could usually play SNES at a friend's house if you were a Sega kid, and vice versa. Amazing times, really. Great video, man. You deserve a heck of a lot more viewers and subs.
I really would have liked to talk more about Rare, this video would have gone out of control, It was all over the place already. It was 12000 words and I cut it down to about 7500 but maybe next time. They literally made more NES games than Nintendo! And I guess they had a separate company that did those ZX games, I'm not so familiar with them, but people loved them! 🍌
@@GTV-Japan Dude, you could have made a killer two-parter! Back in the ZX Spectrum days, the Stampers founded Ultimate Play The Game and made some amazing games. They must have been in their late teens or early twenties. Then, they sold Ultimate and created Rare. Those early Ultimate games, especially Jet Pac and Pssst would have been a great success if released in the arcades. The Speccy, the Famicom and the Genesis are the systems that created and cemented my love for gaming, and most Ultimate games were my favorites on the Spectrum. You should try them via emulation; it is really great stuff.
Excellent documentary. Really takes me back to that time and my youth. How lucky we were to grow up with such games and innovation. This video kept me glued throughout. Well made and well done.❤

It is VERY Sonic-like! The barrels are like the loops and they're are several paths along the way, it is super fast and you lose a lot of lives but its not frustrating as you learn how to go. I'd say its more like Sonic than Mario.

The development of DKC is one of those topics that there is a lot of material about, and for good reason, because at the time it was a massive hit, I personally love the topic and have seen many, and some very good videos about it, but it is always a pleasure to see a subject treat with your personal touch. I remember that the first one I played was DKC 2, which is my favorite of the entire series, and one of my favorite SNES games of all time.
Yep lots of people have said they liked the second game a lot. It’s very fun! I’ll be moving back to more obscure stuff next time though!
1994 was such a spectacular year for Nintendo, that it was already turning the tides even before Donkey Kong Country shook the entire landscape of console gaming. We saw the likes of Mega Man X, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III, Street Fighter II: Turbo, Super Bomberman 2, etc.
None of those games scratched the surface of what DK did for Snes.
Another incredible and fantastic retrospective. Lots of good memories playing DKC 1 and 2. Can't remember if I ever tried 3. Oddly enough I've never owned the original trilogy physically which I'm trying to correct now if I can get them for a good price.
Rare was always such an enigma to me in the late 80s and very early 90s, there was no question their games had their own signature feeling and style. Fascinating company for sure.

Anyone who said this game was "too easy" is a liar or a sadist. I didn't meet a single person who had beaten any of the 3 OG games when they came out.
Before I dig into this professional tier material done entirely at your own expense and at no financial benefit to you... to give my perspective as a dedicated Sega fan in the early 90's, I was beginning to scratch my head as to why Sega was releasing multiple expensive secondary platforms to the Genesis promising the next generation of gaming, while Nintendo was releasing games with polygonal 3D graphics and Silicon Graphics spritework without any additional hardware purchases required. The one thing I knew for sure was that Sony needed to stick to making TVs and no one would bother with a system with weird symbols on its buttons instead of sensible letters or numbers like a REAL system.
I got to say that i often read and heard complaints that Sony needs to make TVs and Walkmans instead of games. The start button looks like a play button on a VCR! Not good! Well well is Nintendo ever gonna make a TV? NO!!
The sputtering was intense! A lot of people can not understand it today but I think you agree that many saw the PSX as another 3DO, a huge rich company releases this big powerful expensive thing but they have no experience in the industry and it was just junk nobody wanted. But then, we played it and saw, hey this is ok! 🍌

But once i realize it was the case i was like “whooaaah the snes is waaaay more advanced then my nes then i was imagine”
And so i was jealous on everybody who owned a snes and so i wanted my own snes sooo bad.
Then once the second hand game store came around in late 2001, i finally bought my snes and later i bought donkeykong country for it and so i felt myself to be the luckiest man in the world from that point😁

I definitely remember my first time playing DKC , it was at a local arcade chain called Boomerangs. This was right around the release of Sonic and knuckles. They did birthday parties where you could rent out their badass video games room - complete with a big screen TV, surround sound, leather couches and Snes and Genesis + a library of games you could choose to play. The 2 we picked out of course were Sonic and Knuckles and Donkey Kong country, i believe both had been freshly released and we hadnt seen them yet.
We had a ton of fun checking out both and they were both so good it was hard to pick the favorite of the day. The graphics of DKC definitely blew everyones little minds though. I was the SNES kid and Birthday Boy was the Sega kid, so he got S&K while I got DKC a few months later. And later swapped snes for genesis so that we both got a chance to play through both games 😊 good times.
P.s. i was hella sick with a stomach flu yesterday when this episode launched and you have no idea how much it cheered me up!

Donkey Kong Country was a great game. It had the perfect mix of fun vs challenge that was rarely achieved in the NES days but a staple of good games with the SNES and the industry going forward.
This is why gaming wars are the only wars that I condone.
39:15 DKC2 was originally going to be on virtual boy though it was barely in production before it was cancelled so no screen shots or playable demo exist, at least to the public.
How Rare constantly experimented and pushed the limits of their hardware reminds me of how I experimented on the computer. It further motivates me to try more outlandish things, especially for my animations!

This is so incredibly informative, growing up as a kid in early 90s I had a Genesis and loved it but it was a "grass is always greener" situation where I envied people who had SNES and the cool-looking games, lol. I never considered the idea that Sega had a larger market share for a few years.
Some of it was playing fast and loose with the numbers. Sega was “leading” Nintendo in 1992 but only if you ignore the NES. I guess it’s fair. They aren’t equal machines. Also Nintendo of America never announced US revenues but Sega always did. Now it is true the genesis sold more systems every year and more cartridges, and for a long time had more games available but I guess if you only read Nintendo power and didn’t have Sega friends it looks a lot different. 🍌🐒

Ohhhhh man! Just started watching. Already know im in for a good time.
I have to give them a lot of credit for this game. They didn't just bring back a character, they didn't just refresh a character, they gave Donkey Kong an entire world and lore that you just wouldn't expect from a franchise they didn't touch since the 80's. Sure, Mario became the breakout star of the Donkey Kong games, but DK didn't become the staple he was until DK 94 and DKC. Now he's getting a significant part of a theme park from a company that once tried to sue Nintendo for his existence. Especially when Nintendo has a LOT of IP just languishing. And I always liked the newer DQ Soft Serve Swirl haired, tie wearing, more athletic and vibrant looking DK and his ape family more than the arcade game versions of the characters.
Think about the missed opprtunity!!
Unpopular opinion. Donkey Kong country is pretty meh. Graphics and music are amazing but the constant trial and error gameplay is very annoying
Many that think this. Once the graphical style wears its welcome, what's left is an alright at best platformer. It's not all bad, but I didn't enjoy a single boss fight (except the last) or minecart level in DKC.

Maaaaan, to this day, I still listen to the DKC OST at least once a month. Even as a youngster, I would pause the game at the end of the minecart level just to listen to the rest of the music. David Wise was just THAT good. I don’t know what he’s doing or where he is now, but I hope he’s living a good life.
