Not sure which "military bases" were around back in the 1930s. But I'm pretty sure Sandy Hook CG station was in operation back then. And they would have been the closest "major" CG command for that area. And you could also be talking about Atlantic City CG station. I was stationed at Base Gloucester NJ (Philly COTP) and there many photos on the hallway walls of various rescues/assistance the base was involved with. I loved hearing about each story, being 18 and fresh from boot.

These last few months, Mr Brady, yourself and your team have emerged from a healthy but hard-fought lead over the chasing pack of maritime RUclips channels, to assume a place entirely your own in the pantheon of the greats. Your dedication to duty is second to none, your skill in conveying the horrors of a tragedy equally so; the deep-felt empathy woven into each carefully-placed moment of footage or voiceover is so very clear for all to sense - and, through you therefore, we too hold the victims and survivors in our hearts. Those who never left ship, you bring back to life; those whose voyage continued long after their rescue, you humanise, because they were human. Those responsible, you give the treatment they deserved but may not have received in life, and in this way, we all feel as if something, at least, has been put right. You're not half-bad, old bean! Full ahead, aye aye...
I've been hoping that you would do a video about her. I first heard about the Morro Castle from a show called Shipwreck, I think it was. They did an episode about her and interviewed survivors. This was before arson became the accepted theory, and the show discussed other potential causes, including overheat from the updates and electrical short. Years later, I still find her story chilling, especially since the FCC has refused to give her callsign to anyone else. If you look it up, it's still assigned to SS Morro Castle. Another completely random, but interesting fact, because I am FULL of those and have nothing else better to do. The Morro Castle held the speed record for the New York to Havana run - until Cunard put the Mauretania on that same route at the end of her life. Yeah, poor Morro Castle lost that record REAL quick once the Maury came on scene. On Maury's last voyage before retirement, she was returning to New York from Havana and passed the Morro Castle's burned out wreck. Since the Maury had burned herself years earlier, only saved by the heroic actions of her crew, part of me likes to think if she understood how lucky she'd been then.

You might consider covering the SS Yarmouth Castle whose loss in a disastrous fire in 1965 prompted new laws regarding safety at sea and was immortalized in a song by Gordon Lightfoot.
Gordon Lightfoot's ballad, which IMO is one of his best works, is where I first learned about the tragedy. Fun fact: Lightfoot never made a studio version of the song. Ballad of The Yarmouth Castle and a number of his other songs were recorded during a live performance in 1968 at Massey Hall in Toronto, which were subsequently released as the album Sunday Concert in 1969.

Thanks for featuring the SS Morro Castle! Been fascinated by this tragic fire for years, especially the haunting photographs of the gutted hulk washed up at Asbury Park. Well done as always!
Great Video. So way back when.....(As I've been a liner enthusiast my entire life)....in High School I used to give lectures on the history of the ocean liners. One day in my senior year I did one on the "Morro Castle"......after reading "Shipwreck: the strange fate of the Morro Castle".....and the interest in the story amongst otherwise uninterested teenagers in Laguna Beach, Ca back then was amazing. I think it was because of the George White Rogers angle, and particularly his life of crime after the disaster.......Anyway, "When the dancing stopped" was also another good read. Cheers, mate!

Awesome. My father saw the MORRO CASTLE when it beached at Asbury Park. He lived in NJ, and his father and mother decided to hop in the car and go see it. I can't help but think that somewhere in those photos of the crowds with "morbid curiosity" are my father and grandparents. I had a cousin through marriage (who had big BIG bucks) who was fascinated by the tragedy, and collected many artifacts from that ill fated ship... I have also found it fascinating, and have a water line model of that ship and several books.

I do believe Oceanliner Designs, 'SS Morro Castle' documentary has surpassed it's usual high journalistic standards and artistic brilliance, yet again! Meticulous research, top quality production values, and sublime storytelling combined for an enthralling ride. The attention to detail is remarkable, the archive and period music selections were perfection. The passengers playing deck games in stylish, 1930s leisurewear brought to mind my late Grannie (born 1909), and photos of her as an elegant young woman of those times dressed similarly in wide brimmed hats, halternecks, and Mary Jane shoes. I loved every minute, BRAVO! Bring on Part 2 - Asap, please! 👏👏👏👏👏
What a great video.. Talk about a forgotten ship.. No one really remembers her, except in the conversation of Fireproof requirements. It was great to see you in Asbury... We used to hang out there in our teens and twenties... It was dodgey back then, but still fun. Interestingly, my grandfather, who was a longshoreman, took my mom and two of my uncles down to Asbury Park to see the ship when she washed up and was smoldering.. Because of my brother's and my love of ships, she often recounted the story of how horrible the ship looked and how the burning scent was present on the beach.. Loved seeing you connect with Caitlin... she is another favorite.. It's Thanksgiving here in the USA, so let me say I'm so grateful for you and your team that produce these videos. They are my go to, to take my mind off the other crappy situations in the USA... Still waiting for the next installment in the history of the ships.... We are up to the 30's... A great decade... The bright sun was extinguished, and the stars

Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air;
Morn came and went-and came, and brought no day,
And men forgot their passions in the dread
Of this their desolation; and all hearts
Were chilled into a selfish prayer for light:
And they did live by watchfires-and the thrones,
The palaces of crownéd kings-the huts,
The habitations of all things which dwell,
Were burnt for beacons; cities were consumed,
And men were gathered round their blazing homes
To look once more into each other's face;
Happy were those who dwelt within the eye
Of the volcanos, and their mountain-torch:
A fearful hope was all the World contained;
Forests were set on fire-but hour by hour
They fell and faded-and the crackling trunks
Extinguished with a crash-and all was black.

@@lsswappedcessna As I noted, it's on the album Sunday Concert. It's one of his earliest works, and is generally unknown by most outside of serious Gordon Lightfoot fans and/or those who have studied the Yarmouth Castle disaster.
I've been so looking forward to this video, the intro was beautifully done, very intense. Much appreciation for our friend Mike Brady from Oceanliner Designs.
Great to see Caitlin having an input in this one. Her video on the SS Eastland disaster was brilliant
Been a long time fan of my friend Mike Brady and I just wanted to tell you how awesome it’s been to watch your growth as a creator. The quality of your writing and production has gotten better and more sophisticated year over year, and it’s been so much fun to observe it in real time; one video after another. Keep up the fantastic work, friend. You’ve built something very interesting, educational, and impressive.
Just replied with exactly the same thoughts but without your quality! I was also going to write that it feels like the Beatles improving on every album...
I have LONG waited for a quality feature length documentary on the Morro Castle disaster. Thanks Mike, for giving me it.
Excellent, when I saw the Ask A Mortician video I wasn’t expecting a crossover!!! What an amazing collaboration between 2 of my favourite channels 🎉
Mike, your channel just gets better and better. Thanks for all this outstanding maritime history.
Mike, my friend from Oceanliner Designs, you’ve truly outdone yourself with this episode. The writing, the narration, the mood, storytelling, visuals, and more were on point. Thank you and honestly can’t wait for part 2!
Having read "Fire at Sea" by Thomas Gallagher years ago I was very impressed with your presentation of this disaster. I look forward to Part 2!
collab of the oceanliner designs and the order of the good death? absolutely amazing
The Yarmouth Castle suffered a similar fate just 30+ years later. Gordon Lightfoot wrote a song about the sad event long before the Edmund Fitzgerald. (The Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle)
Been following Oceanliner designs since the start and my god he has grown into something truly unique and special, honoring the people who have or are treading the ocean. CHEERS to you Mike🎉🎉🎉
I live 15 minutes from where this happened. Last year they discovered the Anchor not too far from where she beached. There is a also plaque commemorating the incident. Thank you for covering a part of our local NJ history. Thank you from across both the Atlantic and Pacific
My family had a house in the town just south of Asbury Park. The Morro Castle is large in our family history. I was just talkìng to my sister aboit this the other day. So thank you for the complete story
I cannot wait for part 2! This is a fascinating story and having two of my favorite You Tubers in the same episode is the icing on the cake! Mike and Caitlin in the same video is gonna be amazing!
Looking forward to the second part, with Caitlin! Excellent so far! Horrible tragedy! 😢
The production of your videos is just on the next level!!! Can't wait for part 2 and Caitlin's input, such a fantastic crossover!!! 👏☺
These videos are becoming more and more like documentaries, and I am SO pumped for it!
I loved your collab on Caitlin Doughty's channel! I knew it was your work immediately.
Mike Brady and Caitlin Doughty is a collab I wasn't expecting to see but I'm sure it's going to be an incredible one! Now if Ti's Hot Mess History joins in to make a complete deep dive series about the social scene of the Titanic/Gilded Age, followed by the tragic outcome of the sinking and the later life of some of the survivors, that will be one for the ages!
Me watching any movie in a theater: 😴
Me watching a documentary by Oceanliner Designs, Shipwreck Sunday, etc.: 😀
The production quality of this channel never ceases to amaze me, honestly. Love it!
Mike, this is fantastic mate. Great video, got a real feel for the journey and atmosphere. Great job. Lee UK
Looks like our friend Mike Brady has done it again, another great Oceanliner Designs adventure. This video is fantastic compared to how I first heard of the Morro Castle reading about it back in the 1970s. How fortunate this new generation of disaster at Sea enthusiasts are to have a friend like you taking them on these epic adventures. Your friend, Duane Barbic
Great video. Not just a repeat of general facts but an in depth dive into the facts and the people involved. It is also presented with an obvious love of the sea, the ships and the people.
wow! Caitling is here too! great, first Caitlin´s video about the party ship in London and your help with the animation and now she is here... two of my favourite youtube people. thanks!
Superb video, Mike. Morro Castle has mostly been forgotten in favor of larger, more iconic ship disasters and I admit I didn't realize how much more there was to her story, her line, and her crew. Your 3D graphics brought her to life like NO ONE has ever done before; simply amazing. I can't wait for the next part!
Mike AND Caitlin?! No way!! The collab we didn’t know we needed.
When your RUclips channels Collide! I love Caitlin! I was excited in her latest video to hear her say she had the help of Oceanliner Designs for the ship graphics, I had been wondering if that's where she got the footage. Love a collab from great creators!
This is some pro level stuff! Looking forward to the next episode!
The production quality of this channel is just a thing to behold. It’s a shame programming like this isn’t more mainstream or on television nowadays
Talk about a dream team with you and Caitlin. Very excited to watch part two!
Great jobs as always!
Thanks for the new video Mike!
As a senior merchant Marine chief engineer, I am amazed every time with the quality of the videos of this channel and the amazing work, of our friend Mr Brady!
Aaah i saw your shoutout on Caitlin's video Friday.... this is INCREDIBLE!
Do you think you could make a real time animation of the Wilhelm Gustloff sinking?
YES
A collab between two of my favourite channels?? I'm stoked.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN HYPED FOR A CROSSOVER MORE IN MY LIFE
Hi Mike, really enjoyed this. I’d never heard of the Morro Castle, so great to learn about her. I watched the documentary “Titanic in Colour” recently on Channel 4 (I live in the UK), and I was delighted to see you were interviewed on the documentary. Great work as always!
Mike, you’re a fabulous story teller. I’ll bet you’d be a great audio book reader.
I found the first part about the SS Morro Castle disaster very interesting and very informative, thank you very much
I love Caitlin Doughty!! I saw the animation you did for her channel and it was fantastic! I'm so glad she's going to be on your channel!!!
Great video and looking forward to the Caitlin interview. I saw on her channel that you guys did the scenes for thatferry that sank on the River Thames, top quality stuff as always!
One of the things that always makes me excited for a new ocean liner designs upload is the production quality, with each upload I still get impressed how it gets better and better. Never stop!
Thank you so much for this, Mike . Very professional and moving. Looking forward to part 2. 👏 👌
Wow, fantastic, gripping opener that brought these historic people and events vividly to life.
Wait, Mike Brady was 10 miles from my house and I didn't get to meet him??? That sucks. Awesome video as usual, can't wait for part 2.
Stay well mate..
For fire fighter training they use the Morro Castle as an example of having the sufficient fire stations but the fire pump not having enough psi to run more than 1 hydrant at once
I squealed when Caitlin from Ask a Mortician said your name in her video! and omg i'm so hype for the next one!
Full agreement! Ms. Doughty is amazingly knowledgeable. I, myself, have benefited from the information she shares. R.A.N. Admiral of the Fleet Brady always insists on the best for his videos. Thank You for allowing us to view the work of your superior skills, SIR!
Iv been waiting for this!!!! I came across a photo album in my local historical society eith pictures if the ship washed ashore. It was incredible to see!!!!
No ones helps us to see these events quite like you videos and words do! So stoked for part 2!
Caitlin!!!! This was fantastic, as always! Thanks so much! Can’t wait for part 2. :3
