The wonderful thing is that Aang is the only one who could’ve taken Ozai’s bending away, if you remember the Lionturtle said that one unbending in spirit could bend someone’s spirit. All the previous avatars advices Aang to go against his beliefs, to bend his spirit for the world’s needs. By refusing and staying true to himself he could bend the fire lords spirit!

This is why I'm always annoyed that people complain about the ending because it "Comes out of nowhere". Which I guess is TECHNICALLY true, but I feel like that's the entire point. The Lionturtle chose to teach Aang something that literally no one else knows/thinks exists. Aang is the only person trying to think of a solution that doesn't involve killing. Aang truly believes all life is sacred and that he doesn't have the right to end someone's life, even someone as terrible as the Firelord. I feel like if the Energy Bending were ever even hinted at, people would basically be able to see the ending coming from a mile away. Keeping it a secret keeps us the audience on our toes. Ideally none of us should WANT Aang to have to go through with killing the Firelord. Even if (Like many other characters) we think it's necessary, Aang is a 12 year old kid and we know the kind of anguish this act would inflict upon him. It keeps us in suspense about whether or not he's going to go through with it.

Also, it's way more intimidating. As one of the reactors said, taking bending away from a bender is more devastating than killing them. It's like ripping a part of their soul from them. And, it sends a message to every other person on the planet. I will ffft you up and make you live with it. It's like cutting off a warrior's dominant hand.

in an interview the voice actress for Azula , the ever talented Grey De Lisle, said that for that breakdown scene she had to pull from some very traumatic memories and very deep pain and just allow her self to just let go and just fully feel it to get that take. To this day she has a hard time rewatching the scene because of it, That is a freaking artist right there lol She did not have to go that hard but she did, and I think thats what sets this show apart from others of its time, every single person who worked on this show gave 110% to it because they loved the story and knew how important it was to get it told and have its message resonate. So, that scene where Azula is tied up and crying has an interesting bit of trivia. The voice actress who did Azula, had to dig deep into some dark, personal trauma to be able to make those cries sound realistic. Apparently, the studio crew put her in the sound booth, turned on the recorders and everyone left, giving her privacy so she could do that scene. I have serious respect for anyone who is, not only, able but willing to do that to themselves for their art.

During firebending training, Zuko told Aang to roar like a tigerdillo, which I believe was seen as a show of strength in the Fire Nation. In the first instance, Aang's was puny, and then it was fierce enough to intimidate Momo. Firelord Ozai did the same roar but to a much more threatening degree it got Aang shook, and finally Aang in full Avatar State was the highest level of strength a firebender could achieve, a long call back to the Winter Solstice where the Fire Sage stated only a fully realized Avatar can open the door needing five simultaneous fire blasts, showing Aang himself is now fully realized. And yall pointed out something I never realized; the parallel between the way Azula was defeated and the way Ozai was defeated. What a show man.

It's my headcanon that energy bending is not a 5th type of bending, instead it's all the types of bending (and everything in nature) combined. When you think about it all 4 elements are nothing else but energy in different forms. That can also be seen from the very first episode when Iroh said "the breath becomes energy in the body, the energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire". Also the energy beam when aang takes the firelords bending away looks exactly the same as the beam in the first episode when aang comes out of the iceberg. That would mean Aang possessed this power from the beginning, explaining how he could use the roots of the tree in the swamp to find katara and sokka. The lionturtle just made him see how to use this power. Like Guru Pathik said that nothing is separate, it makes sense to say that energy is what connects everything (especially the 4 elements)

Azula is one of my 3 fav characters of this show and i really wanted a redemption for her ! Cause if u think about it she is the one who suffered the most, yeah there is zuko but zuko had iroh azula was alone she felt alone there r moment when she shows pain like in the beach or at the end when saw her mom she cared about their friends but she fed the friendship with fear instead of love because she believe is the only ways people wont betray you cause all she learned was from his father and when her friends betray her all she believe fall apart imagine if that happens to you in the most important day the day u have to be perfect the day u have to show u r strong, thats why she break at the end she is really strong but after defeat she just breaks plus u can see the demage her father did to her when said to zuko “the duel that was meant to be” like from kids that was they were taught to compete each other to fight each other to gain everything thru fight or kill each other and she has this idea of being strong so wrong even when she is fighting and she is losing against zuko we can finally se fear in her eyes in a battle thats why it hit me really hard when she breaks n im not talking this happens to her at 14 !!! We need a redemption for her maybe not becoming good but some kind of anti hero maybe like she wanting like “peace” but has another vision it would be cool

The problem with getting advice from the other Avatars, is that none of them had to face being the last of their people. Yangchen said that it was Aang's sole duty to protect the balance of the world. But Aang is the last of the Air Nomads. The world cannot fall back into balance without the Air Nomads, and if Aang doesn't carry on their teachings of peace, who will?
Aang refusing to kill Ozai was his way of restoring balance.

I remember catching The Last Airbender while surfing on cable and I was hooked. I kept recommending this to my friends that even though it was on Nickolodeon, it was no kids' animation. The story arcs, the depth of character development, the amazing voice acting, the fight scenes, the emotional roller coaster this animation puts you through...absolute perfection! Decades later, I still laugh, get teary eyed and chills watching this. Thank you to everyone who worked on this masterpiece!

Aang becoming the Avatar State was not a coincidence or lucky circumstances. It was a response by the universe to Aang's request and dedication to defeat Fire Lord Ozai while still upholding the Air Nomad culture of not taking the lives of living beings. The Lion Turtle and the rock were not coincidences either, but answers to the concerns of the last Airbender who happened to be the Avatar.

Kataran, Zuko, and Azula being the only ones in that fight… also, because all three of them share a similar wound with their relationships to the maternal figures in their lives- though Zuko shares a mother with Azula, his path to confronting those issues was so drastically different to his sister’s, and instead he sides with someone whose own mother was taken from her because of the agenda and conquest of his heritage 😭

I was a teenager when this show came out and it was one of the most influential shows of my entire life. To this day I rewatch it not only for nostalgia sake, but when I feel a bit lost and need Uncle Iroh's guidance. I remember being sad for like six months after the finale knowing I probably would never find a show like that again.
It was awesome to watch you guys' reaction. So many people dismiss this show initially as a "kid's show" solely because it's animated, but it is one of the most mature coming of age stories I've ever seen. The show never talks down to or treats its viewers like children who can't handle learning tough lessons, which makes me respect the creators even more.
The finale is absolute perfection to all the ATLA fans. The only thing that made the fandom mad was that they didn't give us the full resolution to Zuko's mom. The amount of anticipation and frustration that viewers felt in the span of a second when Zuko asks where his mother is and then cuts to the next scene was so palpable. On the one hand fans felt like they deserved that answer, but I also think they were just mad for Zuko in that moment. He had gone through so much trauma and put in so much work to get past it that he deserved to be able to find her.
Fortunately, the creators had multiple graphic novels written on what the Gaang does after the show, and one of them titled "The Search" goes into that plot point and resolves it. I highly recommend all of them, not just to have more adventures with the characters, but also helps put a lot of things in context for what happened between the end of this show and the beginning of Legend of Korra.

A lot of stories are continued or expanded upon, including what happened to Zuko's mother and Azula's continuing fate, in the comic series. I really recommend you check them out. There are a bunch of different series, but the main line you want to get is The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South, and Imbalance. They also lay the groundwork for a lot of what you see in Korra.

Many reactors I've seen also didn't completely understand what happens. One of the things that made Avatar so great was that the writers were amazing, they helped immensely in shaping the vision of the creators into what we have. I've seen accounts say they would also need to reel the creators back at times, when they'd have ideas that are cool and interesting, but potentially over the top and would overall hurt the story more than help it.
Those writers were not involved in LoK, and I personally feel it shows in the final result like white on rice.

One really cool deep thing I forgot to point out when it happened is when aang and zuko learned true fire bending and the purest from of it being dancing which is true expression of oneself. However the fire benders don't even acknowledge dancing and look down upon it it's ironic and heartbreaking how culture can be corrupted all stemming from one man's ego (sozin) in order to fit his ideology only anger and no varried expression when fire bending this show is so great. It was a pleasure watching all your videos on avatar and the journey been here since the first episode great work guys hope you keep doing your thing.

The story of Zuko's mother appears in the comic "The Search". If you don't wish to read it and would rather "watch" it: here on RUclips, the official Avatar channel has the three main comics (that one included) in a motion picture format. While they aren't read word for word, the narrator does a pretty good in summarizing each panel/page, and features dialogue and other sounds from the show. The comics take place not long after this finale.

Energy/Spirit bending is the 5th element. If all the elements were on a diagram, it would be at the centre and all the other elements originate from it
