  • Brusho Crystal Colors Review/Demo & DIY Comparison
I was requested to review the Brusho Crystal Colors so I bought 3 vials to try in Rose Red, Yellow and Turquoise. They are a dry pigment that you can sprinkle on dry paper them mist or sprinkle on wet paper or even mix them on a palette. They are fun and very bright. I wanted to compare them to other products that I had to see if a DIY subsitute could be found.
    I tried:
    Powder fabric dye
    Grated inktense blocks
    Grated chalk pastels
    Grated watercolor pencils (woodless creatacolor)
I used a file (rasp) from a hardware store to easily grate the dry media.
The Brusho colors were more vibrant han my DIY versions wiht the tie-dye powder being a close second (the rit dye was not good)
The Inktense also performed pretty well. It was a fun experiment and I will probably pick up a few more colors of brusho to play with too! Hope you found this demo helpful! Happy crafting!

My friend gave me some left over gouache she had for a class a while ago and a few of the tubes were dried out so I cut into it and pulled the packaging away and it created a lot of powder which looks very similar to brusho. I did grind it finer and also used it coarse. So fun experimenting!!

It is used as a watercolour in the UK. You put a little powder in a little pot and mix with a little water and use like watercolour. The bun containers that have about 6 spaces for cooking small muffins or similar are probably best then you can mix a few colours. Once made up, you can mix colours just as you would with watercolour. There are people who use them regular who state there are no lightfast issues. I would treat them exactly as artist quality watercolour. Hope that helps.

Lindsay I really appreciate you doing this video, I planned to buy a few of the Brushos next week at my local craft store and I think I will definitely be getting a few to play with after seeing the results. Have fun at the Stamp Show this weekend. Hugz, Anne

I bought a color set earlier this year. One really cool thing to do is tape a piece of watercolor to a waterproof board and sprinkle a bit then put it outside while it's raining. The kids like to watch the colors bounce around. If you leave it out too long you'll have mud, but I've gotten some fun backgrounds from that method during these last rainstorms. Fun to experiment with my children too. Thanks for making a video, it was interesting to see a comparison. I also really like the tip about poking a hole in the top. I ALWAYS get too much out when I open the lid.

I have some Brusho colours and just love them! I love putting 2 or 3 colours on the paper, spraying and then using a straw to "blow" the colours every which way! Love your ideas and "playtime" videos......... Keep 'em coming!

I love playing with my Brusho's. The Black esp is made of so many different colors that when you spritz it it explodes into all sorts of colors. The trick is enough water, but not to much so you lose the individual colors. It's also fun to then blow it around with either a straw or a color spritzer (the kind meant to be used with markers) So much fun to play with! And no 2 pieces will ever be the same.

Very interesting review. You have shown us how to use so many things to make terrific backgrounds I don't think I need any more products like that, but it is good to see what this product can be used for. There doesn't seem to be much control in how bright the colors come out or where they go. The info on Blick said it has been manufactured for 35 years. I wonder what they use it for in England? Maybe for a fabric dye? It said it could be used on paper, fabric and wood, and added to other mediums. Thanks for comparing the Inktense sticks. I have grated them and applied with a brush like paint. It is fun to think now I can sprinkle them too.

OMG I used to use those in College (UK) I didn't know what they were called, thank you for reminding me of these. We used to have this metal science-y stick to get the powder out... poking the hole on top is a lot more practical XD

Hi, Lindsay,You really need to try the black, it's awesome when you spray the water on it as it's not just black, it has purples and oranges amongst other colours in it. I managed to get the 12 pack a while back and now I want the 8 pack for the other colours lol.Bejay x

Lindsay, make sure you get the black Brusho cuz it has so many colors within it, making the black, and the crystals spread, allowing you to see all the different colors. I was given the 12 set for my birthday last month, a d I habe been experimenting with them. They are so much fun. Definitely get the black, k? You will love it. I love how you try different media, for those whose don't habe these magical pigments. Nice tutorial, as usual. I am so excited to,finally be coming to Maine in August. I will be thinking of you. Enjoy your summer with the family.

Thanks for the great video, you always inspire me! I just ordered a set earlier this week and was excited to see you reviewed them. From my research, Brusho is moderately light fast. I imagine it is best to use UV protection on any project that is to endure the test of time. I can't wait to play with mine!
