I use my ATV to replenish my feeder. Usually an hour or two after i see deer come in on my trail cam. It's almost like ringing the dinner bell. Of course , i don't use it while i'm hunting only to retrieve a deer i may have shot but i do think they get used to certain sounds over a period of times. Also, the big matures won't come back around until a day or two after i fill up my feeder. They didn't get that old from being stupid. lol. Great info. I enjoyed the video. Happy hunting !

The coughing issues has never given me a problem while hunting. I, like the old man, cover my mouth and cough threw my nose actually. And Ive had deer at 25 30 yards when this has happened and yes they might look up but then go back to feeding or whatever they were doing.

My neighbor is a lifetime hunter and bags a buck every year with an unorthodox approach. He says to walk normally in the bush as deer are not quiet themselves. He pretends he’s a buck himself making their sounds and leaving behind the same signs and he’s consistently successful. Interesting approach but it doesn’t work for me. I’m more along your approach. Whatever works and there’s more than one way to do it.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Always more than 1 way for sure, but you always have to grade a hunting approach by the track record of shooting the oldest bucks in the neighborhood...not just any buck. Big difference!

I normally walk to my stands but some areas are quite a distance up and down some pretty steep hills. What about a truck (no aftermarket/loud exhaust systems)? The area in question I would classify as sub-rural, so they’re not unused to people and vehicles.

Ok so I have a question regarding atvs, our property is a lot of steep inclines and rough terrain and most us have bad joints and long term injuries. And the distance, walking really isn’t a viable option for the first part of the entrance in. And a battery operated golf cart say just doesn’t have the power to climb some of the hills…. What’s out best way to address this. Once we hit a certain spot we can walk cuz it’s relatively flat again. But will going in part way and walking a half mile into the stand. It’s almost a one and a half mile ride just to that spot

Because of my disability’s… I have no choice but to use my ATV… and I have a permit to shoot out of it…
I know it effects my Hunt… but my choices are limited… in low light conditions I have a balance problem…
Add uneven ground and I’m really screwed. I try to get in hours before shooting times… and try to stay all day,
So I don’t get to the field as often as I would like… spreading hunts out every three to four days instead of everyday…
I wish I could change it… I wish i didn’t suffer injuries from the Global Was On Terrorism… but I always enjoy my time in the field,
Successful or not… it’s a slice of the great outdoors… and for that I am thankful 👍

My neighbors blew my chance at a mature 10 point last night by coming out of the bush with 2 vehicles just roaring through the bush AN HOUR BEFORE SUNSET!!!!!! It was a perfect set up and opportunity thanks to your tips Jeff and another 10 minutes he woulda be down. He circled from a bedding area up on a pine ridge south down a bottom (which is an extremely thick mess of ironwood and maple saplings flanked by white pines) inbetween that ridge and a hill that leads up to a pasture last night. My scent was blowing northwest (SE wind) into one of my pastures so he couldn't get downwind of me unless he climbed the hill and went out into open pasture. He was 5 yards from where I could shoot him and these guys came flying out of the bush and by the time the 2nd vehicle passed through the small timber cut regeneration on the neighboring land he took off like a bat out of hell crashing through that thick bottom and all I could see was white. I'm still fighting mad about it. This wasn't a one off either. Every evening I've sat in that stand those guys have come out of the bush in 2 or 3 vehicles 30 mins to 1 hr before sunset. Last week some of them were staying in a cabin back in the middle of their parcel running a generator from an hour before dark until dawn. Opening morning they were out walking the bush with several guys banging something in sequence that can only be described as sounding like pots and pans. The entire 2 weeks of gun season (2 days left as of tonigjt) has been messed right up. I've been deer hunting since I was 10 years old (22 seasons) and I've seen some stupid things but I've never seen anything as ridiculous as this crew. They were back there in the middle of their parcel the 3 days leading up to season opener sighting in their rifles. This is my first season since moving onto this homestead in big woods up here off the opeongo mountains in ontario canada and had I known or been able to see the grass Laneway into the bush running where it is I never would have set up in that spot. Though it's an amazing location. At least they don't bow hunt lol. At least I have till the end of December for that

My area I'm hunting has a busy ATV trail... there are 2 bedding areas within 200 yards of it. A highway and 2 busy roads boarder the area. See deer from the road all the time. Got within 50 yards of 3 deer late this summer on my dirt bike in the same area. The deer just don't care, otherwise they would be running scared all the time.
All the noise is great, covers up any noise I make sneaking in and out.
In an area where ATVs are rare, or only out during hunting season, I agree they would spook em.

The buck creeped up on me. Came from behind me and to the left. Then he stared at me about 15 feet away. I thought he might charge me when he put his head down. He jump back. Then doe walked by. He backed up about 30 yards then followed doe. The doe came around the bog out into the clearing. She took about a minute to cross. Gave me lots of nice shoot chances. Then buck came across. I barely had time for a shot. Try a yell but didn't slow down. Next day fawn came up 5 feet away. I then said to fawn "What are you doing?" It looked at me funny and walked away. Then bedded down 15 feet away along side driveway. Yesterday a doe spotted me across bog in the brush. She kept bobbing her head at me then walked off and never came across the clearing. I am just old guy hunting. Red flannel sitting on a log. I am quiet. I watch a musk rat and play on phone. The buck I call Sassy because he is in woods snorting at me and kids when we are outside. I thought Sassy was the doe until I heard him snort at me. I am hunting on small parcel with lots of cover and good food sources. And the deer are used to seeing humans. Sassy scares the kids at the bus stop in the mornings. Up north on the U.p. property deer never see humans, so 200 yards and they are running.

Totally agree your access to your stand is the #1 way to spook deer. I have a stand that is located in such a good spot, that I can hunt it as often as I like, as long as there is a N NW wind. Its a thin strip of public that starts down in a canyon and ends way up top and butts up to a neighborhood of half million dollar homes.
I park at the bottom and make the exhausting 40 minute hike to the top in the dark. there is a trail that hikers and tourists use to view the beautiful canyon. The trail intersects with an old logging road, that I follow for awhile, then I shift to the canyon edge and go another few hundred yards to my changing spot.
The hardest part is packing all the extra clothes and heavy jacket and bibs. I tried hunting with the sweaty base layers once, but got cold 3 hours into the hunt. Once I have changed I hike straight up and climb into my stand. The buck I killed in there last season took a few hours to recover, I used my game cart and the logging road.
This is my second year hunting this jem, and still no sign of another bowhunter! There is the occasional dog walker that comes from the houses, but they don't even spook the deer much. Out of my 10 stand locations, this is my favorite due to the fact that a buck can easily reach maturity here!

I know your not supposed to walk through food in the dark, but what do you do in a situation coming off a afternoon hunt when most of your bucks are nocturnal and wont be in the food till after dark. If you circle around the woods you can be bumping out and spooking bucks taking there time getting to the food. This always bothers me and I usually leave my stands 15min early trying to beat everybody to the fields. I still wind up putting out a few tails in the grey light, but I feel I have no other options.

Great point about the smaller parcels. I shot 3 nice bucks 3 years in a row in wood lots smaller than 10 acres in northern Ohio. This years buck came into a 5 acre woods, he was the 7th buck I saw that morning in that tiny woods. If you’re on them you’re on them and people who own tons and tons of acres that try and hunt like the guys on tv make small neighboring properties all the better.

Agree, most of the time. Just got back from SE Ohio with more poison ivy than when I went down there. All scraped and bruised, humbling. When your gps doesn’t work because of all the tight deep canyons in Appalachia that you use reliably every year in Idaho and the Midwest the walk out can be frustrating! Also, my second biggest buck this year, from central WI, came on a morning below freezing a mile in (hour and forty five minute walk). I filled my rubber boots with water after falling through a bog, and the log broke crossing the creek, sending me falling 5 ft down into 18inches of water. Phone got wet too. I would of called the hunt early because I was so cold but kept seeing deer! Going back in later this week with the rifle, lol. 130am wake up and waders this time

True! The adventure of the hunt and the feeling of being more alive is what I always tell people. I also feel more in tuned with myself, others and the Creator. I don’t care about the trophies anymore, although the goal is to shoot mature animals. I enjoy the challenge. I’ve been on plenty of easy hunts and saw a ton of animals on premier private land but my favorite hunting includes camping, a loaded heavy pack and a long walk in the dark x2 at least lol! I'm in year 2 of hunting a crown grazing lease. This one has strict access control. No ATV allowed. No more than 2 guys on the 3 quarter section lease at one time. I was assigned Nov 6&7 this year.
Couldn't scout before access so I planned based on last year's doe movements. I sat for the early morning. Then at 10:30 I got up and walked the ridge to see any recent scat. NADA! At the end of the ridge I walked down to the small lake. I then walked the cattle trail along the lake to find current routes to water and make a plan for the afternoon. As I walked that trail I saw a white flash about 60 yards up hill. HELLO 5X4 BUCK! Up here in Alberta they are fat this year. Bang! 😁
I've filled my mulie and whitetail tags now. Next mission after butchering tomorrow is to help them fill their tags. We all work together.

Hi Jeff. Better to access through on open field after first light or walk 400 yards through the woods to access a stand? Not blowing scent into a bedding area of course.

I've learned that when it comes to your land that the less you do to it the better. Learn the deer movement patterns and set up accordingly. Also the biggest thing you can do it play the wind. Always make sure its blowing away from where the deer will be walking. If the wind is not right for your stand either go to a different stand or don't hunt. Another thing I would add to your list is using flashlights when walking into your stands. Since I have learned to walk in the dark the number of deer I see has increased. Last weekend I had a doe standing very close to my stand as I walked in(trail cam alerted me). I was very close to that deer but I never spoked it. I couldn't see it and I don't think she could see me ether. I was able to climb into my stand and sit down and she was still very close and slowly walked away. If you can learn to walk in the dark it will pay off.

Yep (walking in the dark), just started doing that this year. I must say it is a little spooky at times though.

@@Kraig5821 haha you got that right. When I had a deer under my stand last weekend the thought crossed my mind what would happen if this thing charged me? What if it was buck that wanted to fight? Luckily that didn't happen. I dont have any bears or wolfs where I hunt so I know I'm good haha.

All good advice !! I use electric golf cart when I can, biggest issue I have the way my private small plot,50acres,is access without spooking, it's so diverse the deer love it ,all of it, the does bed all around the perimeter, biggest problem, I have one access point that works best on my eve stand, kill bucks every year but so far nothing bigger than an 8, I've seen up to 16 pointers on it down in the bottom swampy area's, thicker type cover, what I did this year I know it not be the best thing short term, took a,dozer and cleared out the old logging roads so I can stalk and get to my better morning stands easier

Has anyone ever used natural smoke from leaves to help with scent? My family has done this for a generation and has been proven to work in some instances. No matter what if it’s downwind it will spook, but to eliminate scent in the area. If anyone has any knowledge or opinion on this I’d love to hear it. Almost nothing can be found on the internet of this being used.

Ive used an atv when the the spot is 2+ miles back but id stop and park couple 100 yards away and walked the rest. Also i ride recreationally and pass a bunch of deer along the way and they dont spook. I think the difference is if nobody rides that woods unless hunting or if people ride all the time deer just get used to it.

I have ag fields below and above the woods. I continually spook deer in the morning or when I leave at night. Any way to get around them and not spook them?

  • @whisperingoutdoors
    @whisperingoutdoors 3 года назад

Yes I muffle my coughs, asphalt smoke is bad for you and I smoke also...... I use an inhaler and if I breathe steady without getting worked up too much I can keep it under control but yes, coughing in the woods will spook em for sure! Question, have you ever heard a deer cough cause I have and it sounds like clearing your throat or something like that?

Thanks for being real about scent. Ive worked with a K9 bloodhound handler several times and have picked his brain. Your person is always generating what he calls a scent cloud just staying in one place. Everything has a scent. From what ive read deer can smell better than a blood hound.

Sometimes deer ARE used to ATVs. They can see them and know where they are because they are noisey. If someone drops you off, they watch the ATV arrive, and then leave. Same with a vehicle, or a combine. Or you can walk through them, maybe they won't run far.

I love the videos, they are usually spot on. I do disagree somewhat on the issue of coughing. I have watched numerous deer when I could not keep from coughing and they actually didn't pay much attention to it, not to mention the countless times I've sat over deer feeding and heard them cough, sneeze, or fart, sometimes all 3, and it doesn't sound noticeably different than a human. I do try my best to muffle it when I absolutely can't stop a cough, but I'm not leaving the stand because of it. I do keep something in my pack for it if I have been coughing. Of course I'm just talking about the occasional cough, not one that is continuous.

Man, so true on the ATV’s. I was in a turkey club on the Cumberland plateau, and they had a rule, no ATV’s in the bottom during turkey season. 1200 acres of land. Inevitably, the fat lazy old guys would eventually drive into your midday setup on the road ignoring the rules. One day my son and I hiked halfway up the mountain on a bird only to have someone crank up an ATV to leave at 9am!! and spook them off. So frustrating!!!

So what about those spots where there are lots of people And the deer Like to camp out right there when there's tons a human Sent lingering around The place I am talking about is in Maine it is aShipping company so there's lots of workers coming in-and-out of a parking lot lots of truckers coming in-and-out of the parking lot But the amount of deer is crazy So they're cohabitating with humans Must be thinking it is a safe zone But my 25 acres but to rate up against it not not so safe on the other side of that fence what are your thoughts

Okay I have a question. I live in southern Indiana and I live on a 200 acre farm. My neighbors also farm but we do have a lot of wooded areas around us and also 20 acres of woods in my land. Deer hear the engine noise 10 months out of the year. My question is do you think that engine noise will scare them or do you think they get over it and accept it?

It's such information overload for a new hunter without any hunting buddies to help. Every spot I come up with is either bad access, bad wind, no way to get there without spooking deer. It seems like I'll never find a slot. Been out 8x this year and have yet to see a deer. It's frustrating and humbling.

dude just sit as close to the road or backyard as you legally can and wait for the deer to come down or attract them with food plots. sounds ridiculous but you wont leave scent in the actual woods or field and you wont make noise much outside normal human range
