I started hunting smarter not harder about 5 years ago. Locking onto high value days by watching weather patterns, I'm hunting less time and shooting bigger deer. I have 4 provincial record book bucks in 5 years and a doe that ranked 4th in the province by weight in those 5 years. 🇨🇦

I want to thank you for sharing actual knowledge and wisdom. It’s very valuable to people like me that didn’t learn to hunt growing up and have to start from scratch. Iv been able to supply my family with very good venison and it’s an amazing feeling to be successful.

I shot a monster 9 point 3 days into the PA archery season. He followed a decent 8 in to my spot. I'm assuming he used him like bait to make sure there wasn't danger. Scored just under 140. His antlers were extremely dark and heavy. He was 255 pounds live weight. I literally could not drag him. I think he was very reclusive. My best guess is 4-5 years old. (What's really crazy is both of my trail cams broke so I had no idea what bucks were even in my area) This is very good info for the future.

I shot my first buck on opening day this year in Michigan. A nice 4-5 year old 10 point. The exchange was less than 15 seconds and I only had time to see the body really. I passed on many deer for a few seasons. I have followed your videos and also subscribed on huntwise. The property I hunt is in a backyard only 4 acres but I was able to create a funnel with food plots and trails. Thank you for educating this community to have better hunts and make the most out of a harvest.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 This info helps a lot. For the past 2 years I have been trying to follow your advice as much as possible. Most of what I do is try to stay out of the woods and only go in and hunt stands on high percentage days. It has yielded many more buck sightings and my first buck in 16 years last year. So far this year on 2 sits I have seen 3 what I would consider shooters for where I hunt. And I will hopefully get my first archery buck in the next couple of weeks.

This was SUPER helpful. I have one picture of a target buck who showed up on October 3rd. I have a couple of night pictures since then. But he s my target buck for this year! I am judging him to be 4 years old this year using the info you have provided. I will continue using your information to develop my little 28 acres. Hopefully I will get to the point where I have a mature buck selecting my place as his home turf. Apparently, I am not there yet. If either of you want to visit eastern PA after the season is done I would welcome the opportunity.

Jeff, I agree with one of your first points. A few years ago I let a nice 3 year old 8 point walk, hoping he would make it through the season to harvest the following year. 45 minutes after I let him walk, a hunter I keep in touch with on the neighboring property, roughly a half mile away, texted me a picture of the buck he just shot. It was the 8 point I let walk 45 minutes earlier. Lesson learned for me.

I love watching your videos can't argue about anything, but talking about antler color I sure could argue that the color of the antler depends on what forest they live in, and rubbing makes a huge difference in color... because truly an antler is a white bone. If you ever see them starting to rub there velvet off you can see how white it is, in deer elk moose etc. And then they get there color working on trees..

    Great information to consider.
My first choice is body. This video didn't really cover it much though.
    Context is king.
If you're just hunting, antlers are a fine method. Some states/counties have antler restrictions and it's paramount to get a very good look at them.
Management is a little different. Here's why... Plenty of 2-1/2 year old deer out there with 10-12 points and nice beams in some areas. I think the Milo Hansen buck is claimed to be 3-1/2 (not sure if I agree that young). Who care if it's 3, 4, or 5? If you're trying to allow that type to reproduce as much as possible, you might. You also might be scoring racks on the hoof.
If you're just looking to fill a tag late in season, your biggest buck is a 10 point, and a 12 point walks out with tall tines, how much does all of this matter? Probably doesn't.

Our camp shot two bucks opening day of gun deer season last year. One was a spike and one was a 6-pointer. The spike had a much larger body and when looking at his teeth, they were broken and ground down to almost nothing. The 6-pointer had perfect teeth. Your "hammer" must be glowing - you NAILED this age thing! Be it in the Midwest, East, chasing those HUGE Ontario monsters, or even the teenie weenie Blacktails I'm stuck with in Oregon right now, it's those sway back acorn munching attitude exuding "smart guys" who will ALWAYS be on MY hit list.

Personally I struggle the most with distinguishing 3 vs 4yo bucks in areas with high quality food sources. I’ve always tried to judge deer off body first then use antlers mostly mass as a secondary. Some of these 3yo can be very deceiving just based off having high quality nutrition their entire lives. I realized years ago if I’m not 100% it’s fully mature it’s probably not. You usually know instantly when you see a 4+ buck and like you said at that point it doesn’t matter they’re all shooters.

Not really related to the video but you make a lot of great videos on water tanks/water holes. We added 100gal tank on our property this year and it has really help bring deer in to locations we want! But my question is we had a deer that we are positive had CWD, luckily my dad shoot him last week. Looking for advice on what to do about the water holes see as he drank out of them. Have not done anything with them and obviously lots of deer have drank out of them but just feel bad if it’s a source where the deer in our area can catch it. I know the videos you make in the past talk about all the different way they can catch CWD or EHD but in my specific case seems like lots of deer could potentially catch it. Any advice would be appreciated thank you!

With this video, I'm pretty sure it's a 3 1/2 yr old. (problem is, I doubt it'll make it to four with the hunting pressure around here). Great video. Thanks, again! I remember a long time ago my dad shot a giant Boone and Crockett deer, huge mass, huge body, they aged it at 2 ½ years. We all got a laugh at that

Does this vary by region? In Central Texas the deer are the same species, but way different behaviors and body size.

I live in the Twin Cities, but hunt down in SE MN. With all of the CWD "management" there's seemingly fewer deer in general now and even fewer mature 4yo + out there. Opening weekend with temps in the 60's was horrible. Now temps have dropped. Any advice on where the mature deer may be hanging out? What types of cover?

Any soil test kit you would recommend for a food plot? I've used one for a lawn, but wasn't sure if the same one would be okay for a food plot

What are you looking to check? If you just want to check the ph then those will do fine. If you want to see individual nutrient rates such as phosphorous levels then you will have to take a core and have it tested. If you live in an area that has farmers stop in and ask them what tests they use.... farmers man. They are the key bro they know quite a bit about the land specially if you find a good one

Never thought of the color of antlers, along with the cover, I'm very fortunate where I'm at, close to 2 national forests, but my main hunting is a,small 75 acre private, I'm the only one who hunts it, very diverse plot, clear cuts, swamps, briers, brush, drag roads, several ponds, and smack dab on the center a major thicket, I've been hunting for 40 years , I have 3 stands on it, and will take that place anyday over big woods , it has several small ponds , thanks for what you do for the hunters sir, you have already showed me several myths I was following, I have decent success, best rack so far ha been a10, but I've seen 12,and 14on the property, been soaking up your info in Hope's of bagging a real monster!!

You are dead on about the antler color. I raise Whitetails and I obviously get some huge ones. My pens are built in all day direct sunlight to help promote green growth all year. My yearling and my giant oldies all have nearly bone white antlers as a result of being bleached all year by sunlight. UV rays bleach them and that’s the bottom line. You are correct that if you get a trail cam of a blond rack, that deer probably beds in sunlight and the dark racks will be found bedded in deep woods and swamps.
