Ridley is like that grumpy and funny but professional teacher who has been in school almost all his life, he ends up becoming a figure of presence and respect, but fun and knowledge, almost 90 years old and he still has the energy to continue with this, he is very admirable
This is the first director round table where the artists are actually engaging with each other and having a genuine conversation. Definitely helps that Galloway isn’t here interrupting them. This is definitely one of my favorite roundtables!
How is Dennis Villeneuve not getting buzz for best director in Dune 2 ? best movie in the time frame of the awards, insane in scale and scope, crazy cinematography and one of the adaptations that was thought of never possible.
100% agree!! I think dune 2 was the best movie of 2024, but I think that since it came out so early in the year it’s slowly been pushed out of the spotlight which is very sad because it’s an incredible film
It's not just a great movie, the directing is phenomenal. He absolutely should be a front runner in the director category. But I guess if Nolan didn't even get a nod until Dunkirk, after things like The Prestige, TDK, Interstellar and Inception, I'm not holding my breath for Dp2.
From all I've heard about Nickel Boys, it just seems like a very intimate and inventive film. The director himself feels so sincere and empathetic. Definitely the kind of film I wish got more shine in awards season. Hopefully it will be released in my country.
quite opposite imho. she was asking these generic question like from "how was Denzel to work with" straight from press junket instead following and steering the conversation. questions were completely detached. the other lady moderator is so much better at this
What an incredible lineup of visionary directors! 🤩 Hearing their insights and experiences is a masterclass in filmmaking itself. Denis Villeneuve, Ridley Scott, and the others sharing their perspectives on storytelling, creativity, and the industry is truly fascinating! 🎥👏
Dune 2 made me understand the term "you have to see it in cinema." I've heard it, never really agreed. But I watched Dune 1 and it was okay, I literally only watched it because I was going to see the second in the cinema. I watched 2 and I was BLOWN AWAY. Not often I've been blown away but I was genuinely in awe.
Ridley and Denis are so different. It is very interesting to put them together! I am glad Ridley got out of Denis’s way for Blade Runner 2049 because I love the authenticity of the movie and Denis’s signature touch!
Just saw the behind the scenes of THE SUBSTANCE, and Coralie being here is so deserved🙏🙏🙏 for anyone who hasn’t watched it WATCH IT, I’d didn’t know I could love the movie more than I already do until I watched the BTS
Fascinating round table. All directors offered very interesting opinions and insights into the film making business. I wish them all the greatest of success for their future films.
I hope Denis and Coralie can work together on something at some point. They both have such clear visions and seem to have a consistent well thought working technique
Keegan did an excellent job. She always gave opportunities for everyone to speak up and let the conversation flow naturally, didn't abruptly switch gears right after directors giving their points, and also asked interesting follow ups. Great work!
Why isn't Robert Eggers here? Btw, you can feel the mood with directors is totally different as compared to actors. With actors they're somewhat low-key and give off that aura of humility and shyness. But directors, they're more flamboyant (if I could call it that). Even cocky.
As they should be 😂 actors have talked about the best directors are the ones who know what they want. That is gonna come with a level of cockiness but it just makes them better at their job.
I'm a fan of all of these directors (Ramell Ross would get my vote this year, if I was in the Academy), but Edward Berger just seems like an absolute class act. Really enjoyed his presence here.
Ridley Scott is an absolute legend. At 87 years old, he pumps out films that are so intense and energetic one could only wonder how does he do it... like I've said, an absolute legend and Gladiator 2 was awesome! He is definitely in my top 5 favorite directors of all time, not only he makes great films but his versatility is remarkable. Denis Villeneuve is another master of his craft and ,The Substance'' is one of the best movies of the year.
I didn't new Brady Corbet before and he seems like a such sweet and intersting person, always complementing and giving people nice comments, I love conclave even more now
I'll never understand why there is any sort of awards hype for Edward Berger and none for Denis Villeneuve. These two are not even in the same universe directing and film wise.
It's from this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_for_Night_(film), it's a comedy about the romaticism of making films and Ridley is clearly touched by the fact that he sees the process of making film as romantic when Ridley considers himself the technical master who doesn't romanticize the process (even though he secretly does, you don't keep doing it in your 80s unless you deeply love film making). Clearly one of the reasons he trusted the man to make Blade Runner 2049. The song in question is here ruclips.net/video/9cAJd82SB00/видео.html
8:48 So disappointing that for a film that took everything from Body Melt, Rejuvinator, Tetsuo the iron man, Basket Case 3, Toxic Avenger and everything Cronenberg, it is very disappointing that director Coralie Fargeat doesn't embrace Horror, she hasn't even mentioned B movies or Exploitation films on any interviews. Sad.
I love The Substance, too, but the sheer amount of borrowing from other films for her visual aesthetic sours me a touch on the actual directing of The Substance. It seems like an assemblage of the greatest visual hits of too many other filmmakers. 🤷♂️
@ I think it’s well-directed; I just don’t think its direction is as much Coralie Fargeat as it is Kubrick, Lynch, Hitchcock and others. She borrowed beautifully, but there isn’t enough *her* in the shot choices to warrant a Best Director award.
RaMell Ross, I really wanted him to be able to speak more on the fact that unlike the other men at the table, he really does have the perspective of a film maker of color coming up & being scared that he will only have one chance to make it right. He doesn't have the luxury of play around & find out that these older, white, and more experienced directors have. I wish they wouldn't have cut him off when he was speaking about something that they know nothing about or at least care about at this time.
Lady In The Lake (1947) Dir. Robert Montgomery. The first film to be shown almost entirely from the perspective of the main character, Christopher Marlowe.

except the funny part
The director of Blade Runner sitting next to the director of Blade Runner 2049
Cool detail
Coincidence or intentional seating arrangement🤔
yeah it’s a full circle moment
Denis is my man Ridley is that curmudgeon you can never deny
And we know which Bladerunner is better.
Ridley and Dennis are so different, yet they both clearly respect each other's talent. It's very sweet to watch.
Ridley I think is Denis’ biggest idol and he’s always expressed that love throughout the years, and Ridley probably knows that
Denis is like "Sir Ridley, please behave..." 😂
It’s the unc-nephew dynamic at play.
This is the first director round table where the artists are actually engaging with each other and having a genuine conversation. Definitely helps that Galloway isn’t here interrupting them. This is definitely one of my favorite roundtables!
All hail THR for finally removing that annoying man from moderating these roundtables
Galloway is such a bore. They probably all requested he not be there 😂😂😊
Where’s Galloway by the way?
she’s my favorite moderator by far
@@kingoftheseamusic I hope that’s true
I love how the host just takes a step back and lets the directors run the conversation
as opposed to the previous host who'd interrupt them to ask them their favourite cat in a move
Agreed…100%. She sets the template beautifully and lets them engage. Probably one of THR’s strongest hosts.
She is definitively an improvement
Yes, but also keeps the conversation going and changes topic at the right moments.
How is Dennis Villeneuve not getting buzz for best director in Dune 2 ? best movie in the time frame of the awards, insane in scale and scope, crazy cinematography and one of the adaptations that was thought of never possible.

He's a stud!!!!
They're going to pull a LOTR and give the 3rd movie all the awards.
Coralie being there means everything to me
Agreed - saw The Substance just a couple of days ago and it completely blew me away.
Coralie deserves to be there. The Substance is a groundbreaking movie and hope more horror movies get nominated for large awards.
Best film I've seen all year
😮
In what universe does she deserve to be there after one “hit”
Ridley and Denis do big movies, but you can see that they are sooooo different, it's funny.
One is brutal the other is gentil.
From all I've heard about Nickel Boys, it just seems like a very intimate and inventive film. The director himself feels so sincere and empathetic. Definitely the kind of film I wish got more shine in awards season. Hopefully it will be released in my country.
Ridley Scott is 87 years old and still have all that energy. Seems like keeping busy is the secret to staying fit and healthy.
This. We need to know his secret.
wish he could have the energy to make better movies
His secret is intense creative restlessness. Staying fit and healthy is only half the picture.
Yeah he lost most of his quality tho
And desire for more i would imagine forces your positive progression rather than negative
RaMell Ross has such a great energy. I never heard of him before this but I'll follow him closely from now on
Ridley scott is a big fan of ridley scott
Ahahahahhah so true.
Well, to be honest... everyone else is also a fan of Ridley Scott. Man changed Cinema.

Perfectly moderated. I love the interviews she does. AMAZING PANEL of talented directors who genuinely like and support one another.

If Sean Baker were added this lineup would be perfection
And Robert Eggers
Both would be great.
Interesting conversation and a great moderator. Nice to see Coralie Fargeat at the table - She did a great job with The Substance.
as a Canadian, I simply cannot imagine Denis saying "tabarnak" lol he seems so calm and kind
Canadian here too
Québécois here, and yeah... I can't either lol
Ramell and Coralie held their own. I really like them
On t'aime, Denis! Merci de faire briller le Québec ❤🔥
i could listen to all of them talking for 10 hours straight, absolutely mesmerizing
It's hilarious how Ridley doesn't give a f and just casually exposes corruption in the Cannes🤣🤣
Legend
Well the film doing the bribing still didn't win, so I guess that means it wasn't actually corrupted
What an incredible lineup of visionary directors! 🤩 Hearing their insights and experiences is a masterclass in filmmaking itself. Denis Villeneuve, Ridley Scott, and the others sharing their perspectives on storytelling, creativity, and the industry is truly fascinating! 🎥👏

The host had such great topical technical questions. Great job
Denis must've just been geeking out sitting next to Ridley

They've already worked together on Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve told Scott to leave the set lol
@@KPlaysSports123 lol yeah. I’ve heard he was intimidated by him or something
