- To celebrate their 50th anniversary, King Crimson are releasing 50 rare or unusual tracks from the archives. Starting on 13th January, the date the band was formed in the Fulham Palace Café in 1969, these tracks will be released one a week for the remaining 50 weeks of 2019. Each track will be introduced by a commentary from David Singleton, King Crimson manager and producer.
King Crimson will also be performing 50 concerts in their 2019 Celebration tour - playing in the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Mexico, USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile. Tickets available from www.dgmlive.com. www.dgmlive.co....

Long live Ian Wallace! My drum teacher and friend for many years. He was indeed very proud of this piece.
Wow! a legend. Absolutely love his playing, particularly on the bootleg album 'Live at the Summit', 'Sailors Tale' obviously, but also in fantastic versions of 'Pictures of a City' and 'Schizoid' - that incarnation of Crimson was FIRE. In the studio version, I love how he works the ride cymbal for a while before the solo kicks in, love the more downtempo-like second part with the rim shot and the ghost notes - and the main groove is legendary (I wonder if it was ever sampled for a hip hop record - if not, it ought to be). I believe he's done much work after Crimson, including some jazz albums? I really need to check out these
I think Neil Peart was a fan. I wonder if he had this in mind when crafting the more subtler moments of Rush’s ‘La Villa Strangiato’.
Am I the only one who thinks Song of Gulls is Vastly underrated?

The prototype for Song of Gulls is heard in the second section of Suite No. 1 by Giles Giles and Fripp. Also some ungodly incredible guitar playing in the rest of the track.
Islands is my personal favourite KC album. It's so diverse! Great alt take!
Islands is a KC Jewel... I have heard a couple of versions of Sailor Tale, but I really love the ones live who started with the drum intro (excellent drums performance). The guitar sólo on this One sounds raw and it gives an amazing feelling. Great take... Ohh By the Way... Song of Goulls is an outstanding pice of Art.
Actually the first KC I heard, full album, out in my bass player's garage.

one of my favorite albums of all time. I wore out the original vinyl when it came out (I'm old), and I'm still listening to it all these years later. I love every minute of it and the 40th Anniv version of Islands (the song) will be played at my wake. It was a privilege (and an unexpected one that that) to see KC play Islands live at the Ryman Auditorium on Sept 27, 2019. :-)
In addition, on the album, Formentera Lady serves as an intro to Sailor's Tale. The theme of the latter song is repeated multiple times in the former, especially during the dream sequence, when the strings foreshadow the opening notes of Sailor's Tale. I do think Sailor's Tale played by itself suffers in the absence of its companion piece.

Used to own every KC album on vinyl (with the Peter Sinfield painting of off-white with coloured "islands") until they were lost in 1992; I subsequently acquired many CD releases, but still don't have Islands. I miss the magical gestalt of the FL - ST suite, w the double bass, the beautiful haunting vocals by Paulina Lucas and the fun percussion flourishes. 'Sailors Tale' is an intense piece on its own, but I find the hypnotic FT intro ups the intensity by contrast, lulling the listener in before the jam - the last great album jam of the Sinfield era.
@@GeorgePiazza totally agree. the 40th anniv edition of islands is absolutely worth the money. The new mix of islands omits the high pitch squeal that the harmonium made at the end during the cornet solo, too. One of my top 5 albums of all time
A me tutto l' insieme faceva sempre molto pensare all' Odissea (le Sirene, Scilla e Cariddi ecc...). Per me Sailor's tale è sempre stata la continuazione di Formentera lady: esci da un'avventura, superi un pericolo e ne incontri subito un altro magari opposto

An interesting RF work-out version, but glad the album track included Mel Collins and mellotron sections to produce a much more dynamically diverse piece. The Islands stand-out track for me

Absolutely unhinged madness as only Fripp could summon up. Loved the "banjo" sound he used for his chordal solo and the Mellotron "Brass From Hell". That was achieved by recording the Mellotron brass at double tape speed, and when the tape was played at normal speed, the result was that ominous sound.
Is that what he used in the live version of Cirkus (Islands tour, with Boz on vocals)? It's the most wonderfully MANIC use of Mellotron I've ever heard. Also, I think Fripp's Mellotron use is the single most underrated thing about Crimson in general. In this song, for instance, A Sailor's Tale - (where it's actually a Strings patch and not Brass, if I'm not mistaken) especially the second 'downtempo' part, raw and grounded and groovy, the Mellotron strings washes are like, idk, adding sky to the canvas where you already have the ground (sounds like quite a rocky landscape to me) :) Definitely an inspiration for Yes' Heart of the Sunrise!
Later on where he unleashes madness, the strings are different, super ominous (similar sound to the Devil's Triangle), so the treatment you mention might be there. I wonder if the same thing was done with the sound used in Epitaph, In the Court, Starless?

RIP Ian McDonald, ("military band of the british armyW, "Giles, Giles and Fripp", "King Crimson", "In the court of the crimson king", 1969 etc.), alto sax player and "Foreigner" co-Founder (75) ;-( Ian also performed as a session saxist on "T. Rex"’s classic 1971 album, "Electric warrior" and later reunited with part of the original Crimson lineup as a member of the "21st century schizoid cand", his final major project was the rootsy rock band "Honey West" etc. ! he alternatve, progressive, strange, obscure, diy etc. music world lost some outstanding, groundbreaking talent, gute Reise, Ian ;-(

This does sound pretty undercooked, but I love this kind of stuff, it gives some insight into how music evolves in the studio setting.
Once again, I like it. These alternate takes are a goldmine and I'm glad that we get to hear them. I'm just sad the year is about spent.

This music to me is always searching for an escape its imprisoned in a locked room and is forever wailing for someone to give it its freedom. DREADFULL

Well, that's what it sounds like to me.
I know this, it used to scar.the crap out of my kids listening to that sea monster rore at the end. Although maybe it was a good idea since years later ( now ) my daughter is a psychiatrist and my son is going to teach biology. I think listening to crim expanded their minds.
The monster as you call it sounds to me as the ship horns that I once heard at new year. When all ships in the harbour blow their horns you get this dark low ambient music. Wonderful. Sailors Tale has always been one of my favorite KC songs. It’s takes you by the throat and bangs you around.
To me it always sounded like the breath of universe maybe due to the cover picture, who knows. Islands great underrated record. Prefer studio version of ST.

I've always loved that really tinny sounding effect Fripp uses throughout the latter half of the piece (and also at the very end of Starless.)

That would have consisted of Fripp strumming very quickly, the output being fed through the mixing board and treated with what they called "spring reverb" & a slight millisecond analog delay. ("they" being co-producers Fripp and Sinfield)

The subtle nuance differences (IE at 4:45) are definitely worthwhile, but the original album version is superior. The entire Islands album is excellent, although thematicly and musically far less unified than the three prior KC albums. Sailors Tale is by far the best cut on the album, forging a course into the deep uncharted waters of jazz-rock fusion in 1971, and briefly sailing off the end of the earth during a guitar solo unlike any that has been recored before or since. I have always wondered what this LP would have been like if entire release was a jazz-rock fusion album in the vein of Sailor's Tale.

I prefer the album version, more Mel and a restrained Robert. Playing the bass line gave my fingers one heck of a workout when the band I was with rehearsed this piece. Never played it out in public - no sax, but we had a mellotron.

Who's that screaming at 6:02? Always loved that banjo-like sound of Fripp's - never had that same sound after that. As for "Gulls", I saw Fripp perform here in Rochester in 1979 and asked him a question regarding the recording. He looked back on it in disgust along with much of the music of the period. Recently he seems to have come to terms with it considering half of "Islands" has been covered in these last five years. Be nice if they added "Ladies of the Road" just to hear Mel Collins roar his solo again.

This a really interesting alternative textural take, but the album version rocks a bit better.

Some speculation: I'd guess the piano was part of a kind of guide track never intended to be included in the final cut. The single line guitar track, while good and interesting, was replaced by the more thematically focused one over which Mel Collins improvises in the album version. The chordal solo, as we know, was multi-tracked. What is heard here is (part of?) the lower component of the multi-tracked version. Part of it, at least, I believe, survived into the final mix - or else it was redone nearly literally. Once again, this is all rank speculation on my part.
I think you're 100% right. The album track is far superior to this version, but I love putting the evolution of these things together like this. Sometimes I get the notion that these songs just sprang fully formed from RF's forehead like Kronos...cool to see they had to work stuff out like everyone else (well, not like anyone else, really, but you know what I mean)
Agree completely. While this is interesting it is a cake without the icing and decorations. The more I hear Fripp playing the more I figure out the minimal touches he adds at exactly the right place. This is laying the groundwork of the canvas.

I've just read in a book on KC that Fripp would play this song on stage with Blondie (as a guest), segueing into a cover of Iggy's 'Sister Midnight'! Sounds like a very unusal combination. Anyone knows if any recordings of that exist? Can't find anything on RUclips.

Nice....as much as I like outtakes....I'm moving away from buying them.....just bought the Steven Wilson remix of ISLANDS on vinyl.....that is good enough for me....new Fripp soloing is always a treat....but the other inclusions here are....ok...
If I had to speculate on the piano I'd guess it was a early attempt for kieth to add something to the song. This being the first pass through where he just learnt the melody.

So, why was this not included on the 40th Anniversary Surround Mix of Islands? Some sections of this mix are a bit too 'busy', in the jazz sense of that word. Too much going on at once. The released take has a certain minimal quality that keeps the focus directly on each instrument's singular contribution to the greater theme. The theme here, however, tends to become a little lost/buried. Still, though, this is pure solid gold, ... Uhh, I mean Crimson.
