I had a wonderful time playing the cornet on this album. Robert and the rest of the crew there were such an awesome group to be around. Being able to feature on an album created by rock legends was an experience I will never forget.
Wow, that's great to hear. Some of the musicians collaborating with Fripp around this time actually said it was an extremely unpleasant experience, some of them were reportedly disinterested, angry or even crying...
This album is my Favorite Crimson album, it was arguably their most experimental period and I think that's was so unique about them throughout their career constantly morphing into different musical areas and this album is the pure essence of King Crimson...I LOVE IT
I am a 70 year old grandmother and I have been a fan of the King Crimson since they first formed. You guys are the best rockers since sliced bread! Yahoo! :)
i’m really glad to see original KC fans in these comments. amidst all the “jojo” talk, it’s a refresher to see the REAL fans. long live the best prog band in the world 🤘🏻
@@firebrand4074 the kind with stars and nebulas in it yes, what do you have against it? (Jokes aside, i was talking about the wine like color of the cover and the stars reminded me of light being reflected on wine.)
The implied context of the song combined with the album artwork and the gigantic atmosphere always gave me a feeling of sailing through deep space with this song
I went through high school with King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Yes, and of course the Beatles. Oh wow those were heady days! A nice doobie, and I would lay awake on school nights with my headphones on. One of the best bedtime treats you could ever ask for.
The first time I heard this album we had just split some blotter acid 4 ways and it did not take long to feel this happy vibes. By the time we got to this song, we were flying! I remember how the ending crescendo sent us to the moon. We followed up Islands with The 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus and then Meddle by Pink Floyd. I don't remember anything about the rest of the trip other than having a great time. Music was more than just a 3 minute pop hit that is quickly forgotten now a days, then it was meant to really get into it, revisit whole albums and debate their place in music. Great tune from King Crimson, one of many. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Did you know that the official King Crimson website, DGM Records, are selling a CD recording of the concert in Detroit you attended back in 1971? It's sold thru the Collector's Club feature.
Absolutely my favourite King Crimson album. Love the bass and vocals, Mel Collins brings the jazz, tremendous drumming and then Fripp applying scintillating genius guitar. Shout out to the great lyrics (I won't hear a word against Ladies of The Road - it's documentary!). And then you have the classical players on top. Truly a fantastic album
One of my favourite KC tracks. Listening to this band is always a trip into another headspace. The last minute or so has a clear through-line from KC / 1971 to a band like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 30 or so years later.
This track kills me every time I listen to, no matter the time... The mellotron (I guess is that) in 3:00, and how increases volume at 3:36, while that crazy chords still hit. And, of course, the climax in 4:20-4:26, one of the best music moments I've ever heard. The key note in 4:27 is simply crushing, and how comes the drums and mellotron. Simply no words. The word masterpiece doesn't do enough justice here.
Islands is a flawed album, but the title track is a rare moment of blissed-out beauty from this normally tense, coiled band, and this instrumental points ominously to the improvisational aggression of the Wetton era (from 'Larks Tongues In Aspic' through to 'Red'). Brilliant!
Really? I think it's that breadth of styles that makes this album so good - dirty funk and semi- classical thrown into the mix - it's so unlike anything that was around at the time
I can't put in to words how great this song is. In the beginning when Ian Wallace tapped the ride symbol, is simply impeccable, along with how his drums are throughout the entirety of the song. The drumming, it's simply amazing. Boz Burrell's bassline in this song is very great, I am glad he was a member of King Crimson for this album. The first beat drop is simply incredible and how it melds into a chord solo from Robert Fripp, very unique and great. Eventually it transitions something else entirely. The haunting, HAUNTING organ playing in the background gives an ethereal feel to the song. And after the song seems to end that organ still continues. It feels like something that would give me nightmares as a kid. Simply put, it's one of their best songs, for sure definitely the best off this album. King Crimson is disgustingly underrated and this is just another example of why.
Robert Fripp is the first Guitar player that I ever heard make his Guitar say.... "ouch, ouch ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch, ouch!" I like Robert's style. 😎
The thing I love most about KC is the fact that its music defies categorization, even the commonly attached label of prog rock failes to express the pure uniqueness expressed in their music, instead of taking a pre existing musical structure and reinterpretating it in their own way, they create their own structure, the sum of their influences infused with their creative drive. Art.
Actually it was put under a definitive genre that defines and expresses all of their sound: King Crimson. It might be controversial but that's the truth

Trance rock, jazz rock, metal, prog? An instrumental that transcends categories and hasn't aged a day ... bitter-sweet and good for the soul.
There’s a folk n ethnic element to the prog fusion…feels like roaming through indigenous indian desert and it’s almost sunset
The Godfathers of Math-Rock
