    ISLANDS
    (Fripp, Sinfield)
Earth, stream and tree encircled by sea
Waves sweep the sand from my island.
    My sunsets fade,
Field and glade wait only for rain
Grain after grain love erodes my
High weathered walls which fend off the tide
    Cradle the wind
    to my island.
Gaunt granite climbs where gulls wheel and glide
    Mournfully cry o'er my island.
My dawn bride's veil, damp and pale,
    Dissolves in the sun.
Love's web is spun - cats prowl, mice run
Wreathe snatch-hand briars where owls know my eyes
    Violet skies
    Touch my island, touch me.
    Beneath the wind turned wave
    Infinite peace
    Islands join hands
    'Neath heaven's sea.
Dark harbour quays like fingers of stone
    Hungrily reach from my island.
Clutch sailors' words, pearls and gourds
    Are strewn on my shore.
Equal in love, bound in circles.
Earth, stream and tree return to the sea
Waves sweep the sand from my island,
    from me.

"Always has been." We are all little connected islands, sharing the birds and winds with each other while trying to make sense of this fantastic experience that is life itself.
It is a rare thing to be aware of, how small and fast our time here is, and how it makes all our life even more amazing because of it.
I cherish you. Because you know this better\closer than a lot of people. You have known what it is to accept your end, to really know every day is a gift. Not in the sense that you can always do more
each higher, but in the sense that every small gesture is beautiful in its significance (personally, I've always believed the greatest, divine good is hidden in the smallest gesture of kindness, and it always puts a smile on my face), that the fact that every interaction could be your last and as such should be done as if it were, and that at the end, you are your own judge, and as long as you've lived true to yourself and your loves, you will forgive and accept your end (no one is clear of guilts and regrets., but that is\was part of the journey that is human life, it is about learning after all).

Fripp turns his gaze towards the Trifid Nebula of Sagittarius, and recalls that story he read in his youth, about some monks who in their monastery observed, one night a thousand years ago, how particles were released from the moon that originated new stars in the sky. Evokes the metaphor of stars, islands scattered across the sky, and gives name to the fourth King Crimson album.

This song is another level of beauty...

  •  3 года назад +53

Fifty years have passed since the creation of this song (1971) and which I heard for the first time when I was sixteen in 1975, at the premises of the mythical record store “Showco”, which was in one of the commercial galleries in Buenos Aires in the Belgrano neighborhood.
His owner, Juanjo Fernández Padrón, was always there with several of his friends listening to “strange things” that came on vinyl from Europe, Japan and the US. There, I also heard for the first time Peter Hamill's Van der Graaf Generator, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Premiata Forneria Marconi, and Pink Floyd.
But it was King Crimson who blew my mind.
The lyrics of the poet Peter Sinfield, the incredible guitar of Robert Fripp and the melodies and voice of John Wetton, made something change in me forever. Because not only had he discovered music, he had also discovered poetry.
Happy 50 years, Islands! And thank you.

Mark Charigs cornet solo makes me cry (from 6:05 to 8:55) ...
It draws a distinct story in my head; a person, who lived a sad and lonely life, finds true love in the autumn of their life, which makes them happy and full of joy. But there's great tragedy in this, because their life is damn near over, and it took them so long to realize the beauty of it - but in the moment, the fact is lost on them, or they just don't care. And when they die, there is a smile on their face, because they have lived a great life.

Sublime to its core and deeply moving a song that succeeds on every level, not an easy thing to do. Poland in the middle of communist rule with no perspective of seeing the world and feeling free... Not liking this album is an admission of ignorance. It is thematically very integrated.
Formentera is in the Balearics and was a hippy Mecca in the sixties and seventies.
Odysseus is reputed to have landed in Menorca on his travels. Menorca was famous in ancient times for its slingsmen and they were recruited as mercenaries in several campaigns.
The Sailors Tale is about riding a terrible storm in a boat at the mercy of the gods as depicted in the Odyssey.
I know those Islands and this album is one of the most richly evocative bodies of work I know.

yeah I agree, taken in context too, we know that Boz was a rockanroll type dude, so likely not prepared to put in the effort for Crimson, but ill-prepared bandmates considered, this album has excellent tunes, and is definitely as much the product of its members' interests (to me this must be COLLINS' album!) as any other

I love this album and it's my second favourite from KC. But I couldn't disagree more with your first afirmation. Not liking one or another piece of music doesn't make anyone ignorant. And honestly that goes for any album in this wide world. Knowing that music is subjective and each has a different relation with music itself.
Aside from that, your comment was really interesting, thanks for sharing it with us.

    • @gobbiprimus8167
      @gobbiprimus8167 2 года назад +1

While this song in particular is exquisite and quite serene. There are a couple of issues I have with the overall album. For one, with the exception of the title track, I never found myself really engaged with it. And Boz's vocals just don't do it for me. I personally prefer Jakko's live version of this song to the studio release.
Finally, I think your comment is interesting, but whether or not someone likes a song/album has nothing to do with ignorance. Music taste is subjective after all.
