Very nice build! Your aileron servos seem to operate very smoothly. I very much look forward to seeing your flight video. I would like to see an assembly video of this build if you made one, I just recently subscribed, so I am not sure if you did post one or not, I have only seen the B-17 video, so far. I have a Guillow’s P-51 kit that I also plan to build for RC flight. I would also like to install retractable landing gear, flaps, and a lighting kit, as well. I know of a guy that built a P-51 Mustang with all of these features on a scratch built 6” inch wingspan model, but I never did see a video of it flying. I have two different foam P-51’s, one is a Parkzone with a 16” inch wingspan, and the other is an Eflite with a 19” inch wingspan and it runs on a 2S battery, while the Parkzone runs on a 1S battery, but I have gotten a lot of good flights out of it, and have extended the flight times to over 15 minutes with a larger 1S battery, however, the motor is not designed to run much longer than that without being replaced often without the addition of a heat sink. The brushless motors are definitely the way to go. Your plane looks great! Happy flying! Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨✈️
I may do a build video in the future as there have been a few requests with these builds. I put my build link for this model @ rc groups in the video description . also included the test flight link as well. Thanks for your comment!
how did you do the elevator and rudder, i don't see how i can have enough meat for hinge tape. i got the ailerons they were easy but the tail is so small i'm not sure what ill do......
thanks for all these uploads. I'm gradually being inspired to build one with my son (sure, with your son haha....). Pretty much looking at what you've added with description, I would be able to use these items if I did a similar scaled Guillow kit? They're the parts that are giving me the willies.. I don't want to cock it up and have it not fly... Wouldn't care if I flew it and destroyed it into a wall, as long as it's able to fly it would be great
Hi, I loved your video and was planning on using the same electronics as you for my model. I have never converted constructed an r/c model before, but I am quite well versed in Guillows models. I was wondering if you could tell me what type of controller (transmitter) you used, and if you did not mention any "obvious" parts that more experienced r/c modelers would know of. Thanks!
hi Aditya, i use the spektrun DX9 for these models. it is just so affordable and easy to buy a RX and servos and bind and program . if you look in the video description there is a link to the build log for this model @ the rc groups. check it out , im sure it will explain alot =D
Congratulations on this excellent build. 100Watts, eh? I wonder how many Watts the rubber motor would have put out? I´d also be interested to know how much this model would weigh if built for F/F with the rubber motor, and how much this R/C equipped model weighs. Is it still around?
thanks ! if you look in the video description there is a link to my build log @ the rc groups. build that avenger! they are really good flyers from what ive seen..
hi, it has been a long time since i did any free flight guillows but when i was a boy in the 70's and i had a rubber powered model that was too beat up to fly on rubber power it would get the .049 treatment.an .049 is allot of motor for this model and you would be better off with an .020 so with that said it's on to a story that you brought to mind. as a young man all i had was an .049 to send my models to their demise. i had a spitfire with the .049 that i sent off from a hill side. away it flew gently climbing away. we were excited to see this smiling away when suddenly to my horror the spit dropped a wing and went straight down the center of a large poplar tree wide open hitting every branch on the way down. the spit was truly blown into hundreds of pieces. i still have that .049 and it saw many other control line and free flight models. Thanks for your comment.
jagdpanther9 Thanks for the info! D: that story about your spitfire is very sad :'(... i recently had my hawker hurricane fly insanely fast and it flew over my fence, hit a tree and knocked the whole tail assembly off.. i was able to retrieve the plane but no tail was found...i plan on rebuilding it but i only have a spare rudder so i will have to fabricate a new elevator. Thanks for sharing your story!
that's amazing! I recently decided to re-attempt to build the guillows lancer and was thinking of converting to rc. Do you have to reinforce areas with parts excluded from the kit? I just want to be sure to get the right plane that can handle a conversion :/ thanks for sharing your work and the tips!
+DjKidChameleon hi, usually there is enough spare balsa from the parts sheets to make gussets or extra parts. I would think that the lancer would fly great.
Hello. I am building the same kit. However I'm making mine with only rudder and elevator. I'm building mine super light for indoor flight. My question to you is what motor should I use to achieve this while still having enough power to do a scale loop. Thanks!
hi and thanks, this is a balsa and tissue kit. I used parklite iron covering instead of tissue.the frame is balsa and 1/16 balsa stringers sanded down with a sanding block and other tools. also this is a laser cut kit. guillows used razor dies to cut out their parts for years that sometimes could be hard to trim off. the laser cut kits are much easier to build as the parts are cut out perfectly and really fit perfectly in the p-51 kit.
Hi, Thank you for your answer, i want it to built with a retractable landing Gear too, my taxable tailwheele goes well, but fitting a retractable landing Gear is not easy. You need a thin Mainweel, which size has yours?
Hi from the UK! I'm planning a similar project - did you hinge the surfaces using the cloth strips from the kit, or some other method such as the covering material itself? Many thanks from Dave :-)
+David Mason hi david, for the control surfaces i made slots with an xacto knife and glued very thin slivers 1/32x 3/8 of hinge material into them with ca.you can buy a sheet of glue in hinge material for just a few dollars and make hinges to whatever size you like. if you look in the video description there is a link to the build log @ rc groups and it explains it better. enjoy your build =D
hi, i used sullivan golden cable and a central mounted servo for the ailerons. if you look in the video description there is a link to the build log @ the r/c groups =D
I have one of these models, and in the r/c conversion instructions I did not notice where they discussed adding ailerons. Did I mess up big-time or did you add them yourself?
+Jacob S hi, I added the ailerons and they are a little bigger than scale. if you look in the video description there is a link to the build log @ the rc groups and you can see how I did it. =D
Thanks! i recently gave this model new vinyl graphics from callie as the water slide decals dried up and flaked away. actually the proper way to pronounce guillows is gwillows. i have always said gillows as that is how the hobby shop pronounced it when i was a little kid in the 70S =D
+Riley James hi,i like to use hangar9 park lite covering but monokote will work as well. tissue will be lightest but not very durable. you will be glad that you used iron on covering as it is much more durable than tissue and you can paint over it without any problems.
it's not the best. they would buzz every other time back when I filmed this.since then I readjusted the retract linkage and they don't buzz anymore.with these little servos it dosent take much to make them bind up and buzz a little.like Bjork said a 9 gram servo would make the retracts work better but I opted to save a little weight and used a 5 gram servo.
look in the video description and there is a link to the build log @ the rc groups. when you get there look @ the guillows list of rc conversions and there is tonnes of info ! have fun with your build =D
hi, if you look in the video description there is a link to the build log @ the rc groups. on the first page of the build log i have all of the parts i used listed. i believe everything came from value hobby. this model is still flying =D.
Love all your conversions, really impressive work. What size sullivans cable did you use on the P-51? I have several Guillows I am looking to convert, I've done two so far, the Arrow was my first and Aeronca Champion 85. The Champion had bad tendencies and the maiden did not fair as well as the arrow. Now the champion is a shelf queen of sorts. I will try my hand at converting the piper cub next. Please make some more build/ build update videos I really enjoy learning from a talented builder as yourself. www.virtualaerodrome.com/image_browser.html?p_user_id=1128
hi,the cables are the #577 or the #507 sullivan golden cables, i used the threaded clevis on the servo control horn and made a z bend wire that i shrink tube and glued to the aileron control horn end. if you make the control horn holes tight enough there will be no play in the controls. i like the aerodrome!!
Nice package to fit. Guillows planes have flown for years. Nice it still alive👍
One of the nicest P-51's I ever built. I modified the rubber-band prop to a four blade.... this was back in the mid-80's.
Very nice build!
Your aileron servos seem to operate very smoothly. I very much look forward to seeing your flight video.

☀️✨✈️
The finish on this model is fantastic looking.
You should add a small drone camera inside the cockpit and make in flight combat videos what it looks like on camera
You should do a build video including how you converted it
I may do a build video in the future as there have been a few requests with these builds.
I put my build link for this model @ rc groups in the video description . also included the test flight link as well.
Thanks for your comment!
Very cool, I have this same kit and plan to convert mine to electric R/C also, very inspiring, thanks for sharing
Does anybody know any alternative options for the retracting landing gear?
you are very welcome. i should have flight footage soon.
Sweet! I built a guillows P-51 as a kid, but I think it was smaller? Maybe a different or earlier version that they put out in the 70's.
how did you do the elevator and rudder, i don't see how i can have enough meat for hinge tape. i got the ailerons they were easy but the tail is so small i'm not sure what ill do......
hi tyler, just go to the video description and there is a link to the build log @ the rc groups. that should explain everything =D
How did you put retractable landing gear on it
There is a build link to r/c groups in the video description that shows how.
Nice conversion, retracts are awesome.

your very welcome Michael. this set up should fly any of the 400 series guillows kits.same setup is in my bf109.

What coating is on that, doesn't look like tissue

do you have any step by step instructions?? Right now I am working on the TBF Avenger Kit 509. Your conversion are perfect.
thanks ! if you look in the video description there is a link to my build log @ the rc groups. build that avenger! they are really good flyers from what ive seen..
would you recommend a diesel cox .049 for this plane for free flight
hi, it has been a long time since i did any free flight guillows but when i was a boy in the 70's and i had a rubber powered model that was too beat up to fly on rubber power it would get the .049 treatment.an .049 is allot of motor for this model and you would be better off with an .020 so with that said it's on to a story that you brought to mind.

*DEAR BROTHER* please say what was the mAh of the battery
800mah 25c 2s. =D
@@jagdpanther9 will a 600 mAh battery work out for the same aircraft??
is the entire structure made of balsa? it looks awesome and so precisely defined
hi and thanks, this is a balsa and tissue kit. Hello, what a nice job. i have a Question: What kind of cover did you used for the P51?. Maybe usual oracover can do the job.
thanks! i used hangar9 parklite covering on almost all of my stick and tissue conversions. i would bet oracover will work as well.
Thank you
How to you add control surfaces onto the model?
How much money is it
Hi, Thank you for your answer, i want it to built with a retractable landing Gear too, my taxable tailwheele goes well, but fitting a retractable landing Gear is not easy. You need a thin Mainweel, which size has yours?

I'm starting on this build. How thick are your torque rods for the ailerons? First time building anything quite like this.

I'm doing the exact same plane right now do u think I could monokote it or should I just tissue it ?
+Riley James hi,i like to use hangar9 park lite covering but monokote will work as well. tissue will be lightest but not very durable. you will be glad that you used iron on covering as it is much more durable than tissue and you can paint over it without any problems.
is the buzzing sound from the servos normal or is that bad? mine aircraft do it as well.

will it cause them to burn out?
no, it will maybe draw a little more current.
Nice build!
Hey man, what electronic are you using. I am having trouble finding micro electronics for my guillows Cherokee 140 brushless conversion. Thanks
look in the video description and there is a link to the build log @ the rc groups. when you get there look @ the guillows list of rc conversions and there is tonnes of info ! have fun with your build =D
hi im thinking of building the same rc conversion could you send me some links to all the parts
hi, if you look in the video description there is a link to the build log @ the rc groups. on the first page of the build log i have all of the parts i used listed. i believe everything came from value hobby. this model is still flying =D.
Great plane!!!
Really? A 10 oz (280g) battery? That seems a bit heavy for such a small model.
+Mostyn Gale 10 oz is the auw/ total weight of the model the battery weighs 47g. I will edit my description.
+jagdpanther9 phew! Thanks for your videos they're very inspirational :)
A 9 gram servo would make the retracts work better
sweet
