Yeah - just what I was looking for - just bought this machine - my mom had one and sewed all my clothes till high school - I learned on this machine - My mom passed in 2018 at 101 and I am so happy to have this machine it reminds me of her - Lake June Eversole❤😊
I absolutely love my 301! I have several featherweights and try to use them all but find myself going back to my 301 over and over. I even took it to my last retreat for piecing. Just a great machine. I’ve just never used the feed dog knob so thank you for this video.
Hi Jen, I appreciate your channel. I like that you are clear and calm as you teach us. My husband gave me a 301 for Christmas in 2022. I love it. And I have used it to free motion quilt a lap quilt. I just bought a Kenmore 158.1940. It has a belt. There are internal cams. There are two gears near the cams. I have the manual. It says to oil the front gear.(?) I have always heard that you lubricate the gears. The manual says nothing about greasing any part. (?) I can see some old grease on these gears. I cleaned and oiled the machine, the best I could. I don’t dare to put oil or grease on this front gear, which is why I am writing to you. I would be grateful for any guidance. Many thanks, Chandra Keep on shining! ☀️☀️☀️
Hi! I am not sure about that gear, is it plastic or metal? You can email me a picture of it to jen@sewingmachinerehab.com if you want. I would guess that if you cleaned old grease off it wouldn’t hurt to put fresh grease there. But…that is just a guess without seeing the machine myself. I think when these were made they didn’t consider how long the life of the machine would end up being and so they thought the grease applied at the factory would be sufficient forever. They were made to last, now they are made to break down. Sad reality but so glad we can keep using these old girls!
Thank you SO much for this video, after my request, just like you said you would. You are a person of your word. You are the best. Now maybe I can figure mine out. ❣ I will let you know how it turns out.
Thank you for doing video about the 301. It’s my favorite sewing machine I have two, I have one in the cabinet and another one with a cabinet and a long bed extra. I like using the king bed in my gazebo in the summer. I also have a lot more of sewing machines
You are so welcome! I have heard of quite a few people who sew on their 301’s outside, so great that they are portable! Good to hear that you enjoy your vintage machines!
Thank you for the video! Worth the wait. Any suggestions on what to do if the feed dogs do not lower on their own? Have to use a screwdriver to persuade them down. Thanks
Hi! My best suggestion is to take those parts off and clean them. Brush the threads on that long screw with a wire brush and clean out the threaded hole that the screw goes into. Then oil the screw before you reinstall it. That should make it easier to turn for you moving forward. I really hope that helps!
Well, my friend Marie from Promethean Sewing Machines painted this machine for me. I asked her for a tropical machine. She used water slide decals that she printed herself. I later sold it to a customer in Florida who is very acquainted with the tropics. Very fitting! It was a memorable machine for sure!
Hi! I use alcohol to clean some parts, not the body of the machine though. Any paint shouldn’t get alcohol on it. Parts that are not painted…alcohol is ok. For oil, just any sewing machine oil. Singer, Lily White…all of those work fine.
Hi! I haven’t ever heard that theory before, how interesting. I would say that it is no more dangerous than breaking a needle on any other type of machine. Best practice is to not push whatever machine you are sewing on past its capabilities. That’s when accidents happen. But as far as a 301 being less safe…I would say that is not the case! I hope that helps!
Hi! Yes, it is still on the list, it will be next after the 99’s. It is just taking me way longer to finish this series than I expected. A lot of customer machines on my bench at the moment. But yes, the 201 will be next and I can’t wait!! Hope you are doing well!
Hi Jen, Just to let you know youtube is including me in yet another trial of the layout that messes with the layout of comments etc. It may well see me leaving youtube once-and-for all as I'm sick of paying a youtube Premium subscription fee for them to treat me like this repeatedly. And youtube is unbearable with the ads. So if that happens rest assured it won't be because I don't love your channel. I really do and I've never seen a video of yours I wasn't eager to watch and glad I did. It's the same with Bob and Marie's channels. But some reason youtube is hellbent on pushing 'suggested videos' and making the comments difficult to find, read and interact with as they are including me in trials again and again - each with a different layout - but that achieves that end one way or another. The video and the comments from people in our community is what youtube is all about for me and if youtube wrecks that experience... I'll tell Marie and Bob about it too.
Hi Megan! Wow, how frustrating! I haven’t heard of this before but I can only imagine how annoying it would be. You would be missed in our little community but I understand why you are considering stepping away. I always look forward to your comments and input! You ask great questions as well! Take care and hope to see you around!
If it’s stuck that means someone upset their husband and he tightened it too much to force his wife to talk to him and ask for help to get it working. Or so I hear.

Aw. I am sorry for your loss. I think your new machine will bring back some special memories for you. Good luck with your new purchase!

They are sturdy and the handle is nice. Love the motors in them too! The Featherweights big sister!
@@SewingMachineRehab yes! Happy sewing. 🧵 🪡
I learned something new!!! I prefer my 301 over my Featherweight 😊
I just checked- mine is stuck, but now I know what to do!! Thank you!!
That is great! Good luck getting it unstuck!

Thank you for this video! My friend told me about the knob but I couldn’t twist it at all! I am grateful for your tutorials!
You are so welcome!

Oups not king but long bed

You can also remove the feed dogs on most machines. Thanks for the video!! I love the stickers!!
Yes you can! But thankfully on the 301 it is so much simpler to lower them! I think the decals on this machine are so much fun, it is one of a kind!
Thanks so much for this! I just picked up a beautiful black short bed today. I had no idea the feed dogs could be lowered.
Nice! You are going to love it!
I love my 301 and sew on it the most. Love piecing my quilt tops on it. It has beautiful stitches.❤❤
Hi again, actually it is a Kenmore 158.19410.
I totally agree!
Wonderful video!
Great maintenance tip as usual!
Thank you!
O my. What a beautiful machine. ❤
I think so too!
You can darn just using the reverse and moving the fabric left and right slightly then turn one quarter and repeat till satisfied!
True! I wonder how many people darn things anymore? I feel like it’s becoming a lost remedy for fixing holes in our clothing…
I love your videos! You do a great job!
Thank you so much!
Very useful video, thank you so much.
You are welcome!
Love it Jen! Nice demo!
Thank you Bob!
VERY HELPFUL
Glad it was helpful!
I’m learning so much 😊
Yay! So glad to hear that!

How do you think the previous owner put the leaves & flowers on that machine - it doesn’t look like decals -it’s quite lovely 🎉

I later sold it to a customer in Florida who is very acquainted with the tropics. Very fitting! It was a memorable machine for sure!
Do you use alcohol to clean it and what kind of oil😊

Is it hard to find feet for a slant needle( side question?) thx- kate
Hi again! No, not at all. You should be able to find vintage ones as well as modern ones.
Does anyone know if it’s true that slant shank can be dangerous if the needle breaks?
Never heard this before, I have many slant machines and never had a problem.
@@CraigSewTalkthanks!
