Cleaning and reassembling a B.T. 7 Motor from an early model Singer 99 sewing machine...
You didn't put the wire retainer back on the speed controller wire inside the base of the motor. If the wire is yanked it can pull the connections loose and if it touches the metal bracket that fastens to the machine, it can energize the body/frame of the machine which is dangerous.
What a great ride to the very end! ❤ I purchased a $9.99 Singer 99K---rusted to get all get out--for experimentation--never intending that it could be rescued. I followed along EACH step of the way. I played your videos on a tripod, listened on a speaker, and virtually worked alongside you. What a great experience. Thank you! You're so knowledgeable, experienced, and furthermore skilled in audio and skilled production. I have never ventured into disassembling the underbed linkage, but I followed you through the wilderness. "My Singer 99 sews and my confidence grows." Thank you so much for the inspiration that you are! ❤👏 🏆
My 99 must be a transition one. I have to watch both the early and later model videos to figure it out! 😂
There were a few different versions of them. I tried to choose the most common ones but I couldn’t cover all of them. I hope you find at least some of the videos helpful!
@ Absolutely! Your videos are great! Thanks again!
Excellent! Thank you❤❤❤
You’re very welcome!
I just found you....Your videos are so clear and detailed. Some of the gentlemen I have watched and learned a lot but not always clear view. My question is can I follow the videos for the 99 if I have the Spartan version. I was given one and have gone through and cleaned her up (not totally taken apart like you) Now she makes a great stitch but sounds loud near the flywheel area. Not the motor. New motor.
I think the late 99 series will help you with your Spartan. Without seeing the machine it is hard for me to diagnose what the sound could be. You can email video to jen@sewingmachinerehab.com if you would like!
Hi Jen! I’m looking at a 301a for a friend. She doesn’t like how the two-prong plug for the foot pedal doesn’t fit snug in its’ outlet on the side of the machine. I bought a new replacement electronic foot pedal that has two-prongs at the end. It still fits loose. So, I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do about the outlet it goes into. Thx.
Hi! How nice of you to help your friend! Hm, I haven’t had a loose plug like that. I’d need to look at it myself. It may be that there is a way to compress the female part of the plug so that it fits snug again but I am not sure. I will have to get out one of my 301’s and look!
My top thread is getting all caught up in the hook 😭 I’ve re threaded and completely taken apart and reinstalled the hook again. Nothing is striking. It didn’t do this when I tested the machine when I first got it so I don’t think the hook is broken. Any ideas? EDIT: well I have to have been threading it wrong because one more go and it seems to be working ok now 😹
Oh my! I am so glad you figured it out! Good job! I hope you can just enjoy sewing now. 😊
Just got a 66K as a treadle-in-a-cabinet and using this as a starting off point for getting it into perfect running order. Do you have any suggestions for a non-mechanical / treadle restauration?
Hi! Well the 99 is the mini version of the 66 so you will find a lot of mechanical similarities. If you are looking for more treadle info you may find it on my friend Marie’s channel, Promethean Sewing Machines. She is the treadle queen! I hope that helps!
Thank you 🙏🙌
You’re very welcome!
So very grateful for this channel!! I just took apart my 99 motor and foot pedal. I couldn't have done it without you!! Any idea where I can source the little felt washer and the corresponding teeny metal washer from inside the motor? Mine were crushed to pieces. Neither are functional. 😳 Thank you so much for your videos!
This is next for me! Great explanation and excellent camera work! What type of penetrating oil are you using? WD-40? PB blaster? Or something else? Thanks again for these videos, I really appreciate it!
Hi! I use Kroil, nothing else. Once you find “the one” you stop trying new products. 😊 Of course I use regular sewing machine oil for just standard lubrication. Glad you are enjoying the videos!
@ Thanks!
You make everything look so easy! But I still have a problem with my bobbin that it fills really messy, not nice and evenly wound. Any thoughts?
Besides removing the motor and the tiny screw on the knob is there anything else I need to remove to get the hand wheel off? I was trying to adjust the clutch to wind a bobbin and the stop washer fell out from the hand wheel. I am trying tor remove the hand wheel to get the washer back in place. Any suggestions?
What is the difference between 201-2 and 301-?
Thanks for the video! Any other recommendations for getting the gear bar to move while holding the hand wheel? I’ve tried penetrating oil on area 24+hrs and a little heat. No go.
Thank you for these videos. I have a late model 99k that I want to restore.
Absolutely fantastic lessons! My Mum was a professional dressmaker in Dundee when I was a child in the 1950's and I grew up in her sewing room, getting to know all her customers with time and watching her sewing and tuning up her machine. When I was in my twenties I bought an old Singer Jack-in-the box machine, and luckily for me it ran well from the start and i used it often until I was in my sixties. A year ago I bought a 1944 Singer 99K early model but it never ran well and I didn't succeed in trying to get it working properly. Two weeks ago I decided to see if I could get help via RUclips and I saw your first video. I have now watched them all - many congratulations, you really deserve them and not only because they are extremely educational! For the first time I now know how a sewing machine actually works, thank you! I have stripped and cleaned and reassembled my 99K and it sings and flies like a bird. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I needed this so much! I’ve been fussing and fussing and fussing with the timing on one of my featherweights. Thank you so much. I’ll let you know how it goes.
The white light you have clipped to the sewing machine table.?? Where might I purchase one please?
I think I answered your other comment but just in case you need it again, amzn.to/4g8prti that is where I got it!
I am new to your channel. Please tell me where you get your light bar table clamped light. Thanks Ellen
Hi! I love my Neatfi light! My husband had to rig my bench so I could clamp it. They sell one with a base as well but the surface of my bench is prime real estate and I didn’t want to give up space for a base. This is where I got it off of amazon: amzn.to/4g8prti I am thinking of doing a review of the light, it has been a game changer and really great for filming, it doesn’t strobe on the camera. A little pricey but really saves my eyes and lights up my workspace!
@ 👍❤️
I just put it into my cart. Thank you ❤
The absolute best videos of their kind on RUclips, thanks so much for the work that must go into creating, editing, and uploading them. Much appreciated.
Aw, thanks! I just love to do it and so glad that it has helped so many people! Thanks for watching!
This series is excellent as are your other ones I have watched. I need to know what length the carbon brushes should be to warrant replacement. I've never seen a new one so don't know how long they are when new. Mine from my 301 are slightly over 3/8" long. Are all carbon brushes the same length?
Hi! The singer featherweight shop sells the carbon brushes for the 301. If you search “301 brushes” they will come up. I think when new they are around a half an inch or maybe a bit longer. If yours are 3/8” now I would probably replace them while you have the motor apart and then you won’t have to worry about them for a very long time! I hope that helps!
My 99K still works great ...thanks for the presentation again..
That’s great! Keep sewing!
Cute!
Thanks for all the awesome videos! I’m on my first restoration and your videos are immensely appreciated! I purchased zymol and it’s amazing! 😊
You are very welcome! Glad you’ve found them helpful and yes, love the Zymol!
Thanks
You are very welcome!
Would i be able to use this video to time a 222 or does the dropping feed dogs make it different?
Your videos are amazingly well done. Subject matter aside, any "how to" videographer would be well advised to use you as a model. LW
Wow, thank you so much!
What a beauty, the machine paints and decals still shine.
This featherweight has just been painted back to the original style. It was in sad shape. Not anymore!
Hi, I just purchased a singer 221 and decided to oil it. When I turned it upside down to oil the bottom part, I noticed several drops of oil on the floor. Probably from the top part that I oiled ? I only applied a drop of oil on every oiling point.. but alot more came out than what I applied.
Hm, not sure without seeing the machine. It is possible that it was heavily oiled before you got it. Just make sure you wipe up any extra and move forward. Oil should't be on the gears or in the motor. Otherwise, oil won't hurt your machine. Good luck with your new to you Featherweight!
@@SewingMachineRehabThank you
Really cool part about the enamel finishes on those old machines is that most solvent will not harm them. We're not talking about traditional paint here so it's nice to see somebody actually recommending a good quick drying solvent. Alcoholic 90% or better is recommended if you want to remove the old varnished oil.
Never use alcohol on the paint surface .It will destroy the decals. Use machine oil on the surface.
@ good information. I've never had any decal damage, but I'll keep that in mind. If it's even possible, I wouldn't want to take the chance.
As long as you keep the alcohol off the clear coat. Even fast drying will hurt it if it sits there more than a second or two. But on all the stainless parts, for sure! Great cleaner.
Exactly. Oil or kerosene will be a safe option for the painted surfaces. The cleaner wax I use is also safe. I hope I was clear in the video, I do not recommend putting alcohol on the painted surfaces.
You are an excellent teacher
Thank you!
I’ve been following along with a tan singer 301. I’m SOOOOO delighted running it for the first time! I can’t believe I did this! Thanks for this series!!
You’re welcome! So glad you found the series helpful! So happy for you, great job!
Jenn The link to the full, 301 restoration series all together is a handy very nice option thank you Bob-T
You are welcome Bob T!
Would you share the part number for the knee bar controller?
I will look into it. I already sent the machine back to the customer, so I don't have it anymore to check. I'll let you know if I find it!
I love this series! Just reinstalled. the hook assembly and am having trouble getting the timing right. I think you said you might make a video to help with this. Is it out there?
I found the answer in another viewer's comments! Thank you for this wonderful series of videos. On to the 301 next!
The video is up! ruclips.net/video/IjA4RdmJyDc/видео.html Hope it helps!
I removed the upper tension mechanism to clean. I had no problem removing thumb screw. I did nothing that would have damaged the threads on end. I have reassembled with no problems, but I can not thread the thumb screw on. It is like the treads are damaged. They don't look damaged, but not able to start it, it goes on crooked. I am careful not to force it. I know it is aluminum, so could be easily damaged. Any suggestions. I enjoy and have learned much from your tutorial.
Thank you for your great videos. This is my first restoration and it turned out beautifully. Love how it stitches!
Very good except that at 18:20 you are talking about grease wicks. Those are oil wicks and must not be used with grease. Grease wicks are spring loaded and touch the rotating shaft causing friction that melts the grease allowing it to flow whereas oil wicks discharge oil onto the outside of the bearing. If you use grease in an oil motor the grease will go nowhere as it requires movement to melt and spread but the bearing is stationary so no lubrication happens.
Very well done video with great how to steps. Thank You Jenn ( Bob-T West Coast)
Awesome video!
I didn’t have a washer either, I feel a little better now 😹 I’m restoring a tan machine. This is my first time trying anything like this!
I have a 99k 1950,s and my motor and foot peddle get very hot is this normal ? thank you
I spent 6 hours with Jen today in my workshop. Don’t tell her husband! OK…OK… more accurately…Jen’s videos 9:36 and her voice came across a blue-tooth, external speaker. Meanwhile, I hung on every word and clear instruction as I executed each step of re-assembly. She is a MASTERFUL COMMUNICATOR. I just finished the re-assembly step of the bobbin winder. It’s been 30 hours of disassembly, de-greasing, de-rusting, and polishing Almost to the finish line…more to come on the amazing experience and guidance that she has brought to the table…. Overwhelmed with gratitude. 👏👏👏
Hi! Thanks for all the great videos! I am re-wiring a foot controller to a female plug. I watched a video where you showed how and mentioned which terminal to add the ribbed wire. I can’t for the life of me find it again! Do you remember which video it is? Thanks!
Hi! I think it is the last video in the series. Hope you found it!
@ Thanks for the reply, I didn’t find it yet, but I’ll keep looking! I found other people’s videos, but they never mentioned polarity.
JUST READ THROUGH ALL THE COMMENTS. AMAZED THAT YOU ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS!!!!!
Aw, I always try to if I can. Sometimes I am a little late but I appreciate everyone watching and it’s the least I can do!
Best help on cleaning up a vintage sewing machine! Your voice is clear and focused on the job. Love how you complete each task as you talk about what you are doing. GREAT!!!!!
