@@henntan5979 great question. It depends on the application but most of the time I do it with the system running. If you are doing commercial AC with a tandem set of compressor shut it down for a few minutes and check the level. and definitely do a shut down on uneven tandem or check if one oil sight glass in the tandem set has more in one compressor vs the other.
