The Coconut Crab is the biggest Hermit Crab there is. It's a species of terrestrial hermit crab sometimes referred to as robber crab or palm thief. The coconut crab is the biggest arthropod on earth.
They can weight up to nine pounds (4.1 kg) and can grow up to 3 feet (1m) in diameter!
I had hermit crabs as a kid, but definitely nothing like this!

The Coconut crab is also a hermit crab but its so huge that it rarely finds a shell capable of fitting it so they just wear a coconut. They are also land hermit crabs.

Yup. As it turns out, there are hundreds of other species, too, belonging to the hermit crab family. (I also thought it's just one species, due to all the nature films we saw, but it isn't.)

It uses a shell during juvenile stages, but eventually grows too big for any shell. This results in a hardened abdomen and a very large crab. So it uses shells for a small part of life :P
