When I was a kid my mother got me a hermit crab at the local mall. I loved him, but we didn't know how to look after him properly. My mom threw him in the trash when his molt fell out of his shell. I had no idea until years later that he wasn't dead when she threw him away, still upset to this day.

@@Sassy_Witch so true Karen mom: OH HE'LL BE FINE
Once when I was little I went to the beach and one of those gift shops sold hermit crabs so I got him and I loved him I think he lived a few months after I got him but he died
Dang that is sad
I think hamsters are the most neglected pets; people buy them cages that are way too small, and use them as decorations. My brother has a Robo hamster, and ignores him! No wonder he’s so mean. I have to feed him, and water him. My brother also has tiny cage for him. I beg him to let me take care of him but he declines. Sometimes I put him in my hamster’s larger cage and take out my hamster so he can play with his toys.
Late, but I think hermit crabs take the cake for most neglected pet. Not only are they never captive bred, but literally EVERY SINGLE ITEM in the hermit crab section is dangerous for them and will kill them. Hamsters are definitely up there in the list but hermit crabs basically have no chance for a good life when they are sold.
The playing with toys part at the end is making me bubble up

"No animal is simple"
So true and yet marketing has taught us otherwise. But think about it. Any pet is a product of millennia of evolution. Of course it isn't simple!
Except basic bitches
rememberjuly bacteria is simple
The simplist pet I can think of is bettas. Lowest maintenance fish I have owned (don't worry, I actually know how to take care of them. I don't keep them in a half liter tank in a corner). Even they require some work if you want them to be happy and their healthiest
Dzulfiqar Bagas Tito everyone had pet bacteria though they digest stuff in your gut.
If you think your hermit crab is molting: please please DO NOT TOUCH IT! do not try and remove it no matter how "careful" you do it. If it hasn't shed completely you could quite literally pull its legs off. They also NEED to eat their old exoskeleton do not remove/ throw it away. It is super important to regain their strength after molting. The best and only sure way to know if it is dead: is it smells, REALLY bad. Basically don't touch the hermit crab (like ever they are prey animals) unless it literally smells like death, and in that case, you can remove it. (Also I thumbed up because this was mostly accurate, but I wanted to add this bit of info)
Freckles 24 based off my research I thought that most of the time you won't even see their exoskeleton because they are underground and that it's extremely stressful for them to have to molt on the surface just wanted to add that or maybe someone could correct. I don't have hermits of my own so I don't have an real experience. I do agree with everything you said though.
You are correct they molt underground but sometimes an unknowning owner will dig them up or if the substrate isn't deep enough and they surface molt then you might see the exoskeleton. But if they are surface molting it means something is very wrong with their conditions.
Why am I watching this? I've never had a hermit crab and I'm never gonna own one... But it was quite informative

I'm 13, I have two crab and they both have painted shells. Once I found out they were bad for the crabs I replaced the empty shells with natrual shells. Now they molted into there new healthy shells
So you shouldn’t paint their shells or put on painted shells?
Johniyah Animates well as long as the paint is safe...but it’s preferred for you to NOT paint them
@@needledbugs a large part of this video was dedicated to painted shells and why you SHOULD NOT have them in painted shells regardless of the paint.
BijooHere that’s why I said it’s preferred not to paint the shells
@@needledbugs I know but it is better to be definite and say don't because idiots hear preferred and think preference and end up killing them or have them stuck in one shell for as long as they do last

KitLy yeah can't they just paint their first shells?!?
you risk the crab being painted and dying. which is also bad.

Crab legs are sooooo good.
Chain stores are the worst... before I moved across the country we had a little local NON-CHAIN pet store near our house. They had hermit crabs with NATURAL shells, and HUGE enclosures for their animals, and employees were constantly refilling water bowls, misting reptile tanks and cleaning fish tanks ect.
ChickenLife awh. It warms my heart to hear that :) glad there's still some good pet stores out there. In Canada every chain pet store I go to (petland/petsmart) the crabs have natural shells too!
there's a beach store called surf style and it's soooo bad at keeping their crabs, i don't know anything about them and even i can tell that they suck at it, only that but they accused my best friend of trespassing for being in the changing room for 20-30min. anyway, crappy store, if you're in florida don't go there.
May I ask the conditions of the betta fish? I want to know how they were kept in the store 😃
i go to an awesome local store in south Florida called wild cargo
Unfortunately, where I live in MO, there aren’t any Non-Chain pet stores. :(
I have 2 hermit crabs, and they both are opposite genders...
We are now expeting the probobility of having over 800 baby hermits....
Fun
Wow can you give us an update
Oh,don't worry! They can't breed captive (normally) because you have to have actual salt water from the oceans in their tank for them to be able to breed together.
@@soulkeeper9523 thank God bc I have no idea what my gender of crabs r
LOL i was scared for that
I have 15 hermit crabs in a 150 gallon aquarium. Temp is steady at 78-80 degrees. Humidity stays at around 90-100%. 10-12inches of eco earth mixed with high grade play sand. They have two 7 inch deep pools 1 salt water 1 fresh water with bubblers to keep the water circulated. I also have over 100 beautiful shells in a bunch of different sizes. I feed them shrimp, eggs, bugs, organic baby food, apples etc. Their tank has A LOT of drift wood and hides to keep them entertained. They are awesome pets if you treat them right and the tanks are beautiful to look at. Don't buy them for your kids and if you do please do the research.
CakeyChaos Hhh since you are clearly very experienced with hermit crabs I want to ask you what your opinion as a hermit crab owner is about the fact that they are all from the wild. I personally have not decided whether I should get one or not because of the whole wild caught thing. I grew very interested in them and did my research properly but it's the the one issue about wild captures. Did it discourage you or are you ok with by knowing that you are providing a better home than the pet stores could ever give?
Ariel Tran It was definitely discouraging. I bought my first 2 and the rest I adopted/rescued from Craigslist so I guess it isn't AS bad.
CakeyChaos Hhh I
Ariel Tran Also, join the Facebook group "Hermit Crab Owners" they will inform you of everything you will need and such. They even sometimes have people adopting out their crabs or you can just look on Craigslist for people giving theirs away instead of giving pet stores profit.

My cousin had a *bunch* of hermit crabs when he was ten. He had like 12 and his tank took up almost half the room. They never fought and they lived for about 21 to 23 years (they were healthy and well fed and they had natural shells (except for Sunny, may he rest in pepperoni))

When I was 12 I wanted a hamster so bad, so to prove my responsibility to my parents I asked for hermit crabs. My dad did hours and hours of research, got me an exoterra, a heat lamp and mat, thermometer/ humidity measurer, no painted shells, etc etc to make sure everything was okay. I did research too and took care of my two crabs every day and misted them, had salt and fresh water, etc. we put so much effort into them, spending tons of time and money on them. We had a molt / quarantine tank. Having all these resources on how to adequately care for these crabs from such a young age, I still don’t recommend them as pets. I especially don’t recommend them for someone looking for an interactive pet, because all they really do is crawl and climb.
I still think they’re great creatures, but I don’t think I’d buy any again anytime soon. Unless I can find captive bred, which is unlikely.
I think owning a hamster is way easier than a crab. As long as their cage is the right size and you remember to change food/water and change out their bedding once a week then they're pretty happy
@@Firenzell01 DO NOT change your hamsters bedding once a week they only need spot cleaning every other day and a half clean every month or two because since their smell is still there, they won't freak out

i was at my local fair and noticed a herm with a broken off leg. i took him home with me and due to me providing the right conditions he had a successful molt and his leg was repaired :) he's been living with me for about 6 months or so! he's my first time having them but i made sure to do my research and i keep his enclosure's humidity at the right levels as well as the correct temperature and he's been doing well. edit: i got him because i wanted to give him the chance to fix his leg. the enclosure at the fair had no sand or anything to burrow into to molt and he would have no chance to fix it, and i wanted to provide a safe environment :)

I was terrified of him and did not want it in my home. It has been well over a year, his name is Zoidberg. He’s got moss and dirt to dig around, a heating pat, 5 empty shells to pick out from, a spray bottle to moisten up the environment, 2 little dishes: one bottled water, and the other is special salts for his exoskeleton. Which animals are still wild caught?
@@ivygarcia6878 I was reading up on it, and a website said petco captive breeds budgies at mills or captures them from the wild.
If there's anything I've learned from being the animal/pet lover I am, it's probably NEVER. ASSUME. Always do a shit ton of reading/research, you can never know too much about what to do for critters, at LEAST to have all the basic needs down! Heck D:
yes! And give yourself some time to think about it as well, am I responsible enough, do I really feel like putting that much effort into something, can I actually afford getting the necessary stuff etc. for the animal. I love animals, always have and my mom raised me in a way where she said that if I wanted an animal, i need to do proper research, go to certain exhibitions etc. and really put some thought into it and if you pull through all that only then should you be getting the animal, after all they`re no less than us!
i had a hermit crab called peanut when i was 10 and he died 2 weeks after i got him. i remember getting a weird feeling when i saw him sitting in his tank. he seemed miserable and the whole thing felt off to me. to be fair we had no clue about any of this and all we knew was what the pet shop told us, but i feel so bad after watching this video :( i hope peanut is in hermit crab heaven having a beautiful life. it's what he deserved

Omg just found this video. My son "won" 2 at the carnival. They have quickly became mine once I realize all they need. Join groups on FB. I learned SO much!! Everything related to Hermit Crabs at pet stores is wrong, I wasted so much money 😩
you should make a video about pets that could be good for kids/ families, i am not a kid nor do i have a family of my own but i think it would be helpful to give some suggestions for families that do want pets. you always suggest what not to get but i think it would be interesting to hear about the opposite situation:) just a thought. i love u and i love how you're informing people about the truth of responsible pet owning❤️❤️
IMO adopt a dog. As long as the kid is capable of feeding a pet and taking it outside and won't be aggressive/abusive to it... a dog is a pretty foolproof family pet. They're going to let you know when something is wrong a lot more than most animals will so that takes out a lot of the guesswork of "is my pet happy/well-fed/doing okay" and it's easier to find a vet that takes care of dogs than any other pet. Dogs also typically only live ~15 years so you're not signing up for a lifetime commitment in the way that you are with a turtle or bird. Dogs are also going to be so much more of what a kid wants in a pet than anything else is. Kids want something they can play with - cats and snakes and some fish are easy enough to care for that they would fit that part, but they're not fun. Small mammals are a popular option for kids because they seem easy, but they aren't and they end up dying super early and if they do survive for more than a few months, kids get sick of taking care of them because they "don't do anything". I don't have (nor want) children but based on my childhood with pets and having a decent understanding of animals in general, I'd seriously say that a dog is the only real option for most kids.
Jazzie Delgadillo Great idea!
Melissa Michael I wouldn't say that dog is a 'foolproof' pet. Feeding and walking it are not the only thing you have to do. I wouldn't get a any pet just for a kid. My family had 3 dogs when I was a kid, and got my own at the age of 15. I had no idea that the dog would take so my time. Also, the dogs breed really matters.
(I don't know what kind of cats you have seen, but the ones we have love playing with kids, and love sitting on kids laps when they are watching television.)
a dog is good for people who don't go on holiday/can go with a dog/have someone to take care of it while they're gone/have the money to put it in a "center" while they're gone. I always wanted a dog but my parents always refused because of that. The problem with dog is that they're "big" animals, they can't stay in a cage/tank for most of the day like a hamster or a fish. I think hamsters or bunnies are good because they can stay in a big cage for several hours and then go out everyday to play with the kids. They're not too hard to feed and the cage is easy to clean up. OF COURSE the parents must do good research and always be with the kids to educate them properly on how to take good care of their pets, but they're easy pets so yeah.
Jazzie Delgadillo Russian tortoise? I've got one, he's very friendly and he lives in a extra large tub with a log, heat lamp, UV light, rocks, and a water dish. We feed him lettuce and when we take him to wander around outside, he nibbles on tortoise-safe plants!
when i was uh.... i'm gonna say about 7 years old, i was at the beach with my mum having a normal day. i will never forget this.
there is a huge pile of thousands of rocks at the beach near my house. they (the rocks) are normally about halfway in the water.
my cousins and I liked to go search for crabs and hermit crabs in the rocks because there was and still is a large population of them in there. so when we were looking for them one day (we always put them temporarily in a beach bucket to look at the for about 30 seconds then release them.) one of them, when it had been in the bucket for i'm gonna say about 10 seconds, it actually came out of its shell and was completely naked. we were like "OMG WHAT DO WE DO" so we brought it back near our beach towels and stuff where we were sitting and go some water, rocks, and sand in the bucket. we then rushed to get some bigger shells than the size of the old one. we got about 5 shells and placed them in the water with it. it actually liked one and got into it. i was so extremely happy that i almost started crying because i knew we had just probably saved the little guy's life.
p.s. thx for reading my crazy long comment xD
p.p.s. ik im super late to comment.

eggroll cause if they released it back into he wild without a shell it would no longer have a hide so of danger came it wouldn’t have any protection from predators
@@caitybritt5610 hermit crabs can find shells themselves. That's how they have survived. What if those shells weren't big enough so it just had to stick with one even though it was not satisfactory? Thank you for saying this. My ex bought crabs for our kids. After two deaths I took them over, and managed to keep them alive for several years. I still have one.... I've had it for about 5 years. There isn't much reward in keeping them after the novelty wears off, but i have taken it on as a quest because its not their little bug eyed fault they wound up here. You have to buy or get different shells, feed them, manage their environment, etc. One way I used to enjoy them was I had a webcam running on the tank 24/7 that was recording. If you take the recordings and watch them at X16 speed the little buggers perk right up and do all sorts of stuff.

Their setups aren't very optimal. They even have painted shells on some of them.
It's 2021 now and I've not seen any hermit crabs at Petco in such a long time

Homey Animals well i have ten and i do my best to take care of them some of us buy them to keep them safe and if they are sick i try to heal them back to health and keep them safe from were they used to be tortured and my tank looks exactly like there natrual habitait and i have all there needs and one of my hermit crabs have a painted shell so i am trying to get her out as soon as i can i am trying to peel the iratating paint.
Homey Animals I don't
I can 100% confirm this, when I was like 7 I BEGGED for a hermit crab and at that time I was getting all of my information from petsmart who told me that they lived 5 years and didn’t need anything bigger than a 10 gallon so I managed to convince my mother that these were low maintenance little things and I got two...
big mistake, one died a couple of years later and the one that lived got very depressed so I got another crab, well my original one killed it so I was very confused at that point and just let it live on it’s own. Fast forward to like 5 years ago I finally got it a bigger tank, 40 gallons with ample space to climb and explore; I tried getting another hermit crab and it got killed, then I tried again and it got killed so at this point I just haven’t bothered trying again (if anyone has advice I’d appreciate it because I don’t want the crab to be lonely but she will literally rip up the other crab). I love her, I feed her well (new mixture every day with a few added commercial pellets) and she molts regularly and has the right conditions to live long but if I had to do it again I definitely would not have gotten her. These are NOT pets for kids and aren’t even good pets for most adults.
(I know there's a chance you could've already solved this or the crab's dead but)
You might be getting female crabs. Try getting a male.
If this doesn't work, you could put muiltple food bowls or water bowls across the tank, so they won't compete. And get a lot of new shells each time, too.
I have hermit crabs and this video is the main reason I realized maybe I can take proper care of them. It’s worked so far. Thanks Taylor!
My hermit crabs have completely natural shells.

The normal shells are the best for them
I had two hermit crabs when I was a teenager and I hated them so much. I bought them at this gift shop from this tourist trap area in Florida, and I did not expect all the work they would take. I hated the coconut stuff they were in, it's the only time I've ever had bugs grow in my pets substrate, I hated handling them because they pinched, I hated how much work they were (because I hadn't expected it). They were really neat little guys, but dang. After my research I tried my best to make a good home for them, and they lived for a little over a year, and then one day ( I had been gone for a few days and my dad was supposed to be in charge) I take off the lid to change food/water etc. and found that one of my crabs had apparently torn the other out of his shell, and then crawled naked into the corner and died anyway. I figured I didn't have the right shell sizes and they ended up fighting over them (I had a few in the enclosure, but it was getting hard for me to find shells that would work for them, since I knew painted shells could have toxic flakes peel off that they could eat and so I wouldn't buy them). It was gross and horrifying and disturbing and they look like aliens when they're naked and in conclusion, while I loved my individual pets it was pretty much the worst pet experience I've ever had (and I've had dogs, cats, fish, lizards, snakes, birds, ferrets, etc, so I'm familiar with pet care). Also in conclusion, never ever ever trust the person your buying your new pet from to know what's good for them and don't ever buy something your not already familiar with the care of. Impulse buys are exciting, but ultimately you'll always regret jumping into the work without thinking it through.
Cleptrio I did terrible taking care of mine because I hated mine- and now my parents won't let me get a new pet
Even though I did a ton of research on rats and want one
I know I'd be great at taking care of one and I give my parents lots of reason to take care of one but they don't trust me with one
Cleptrio maybe it's ur dads fault.
Well, I mean... If you want ratS you should maybe do some more research from trusted sources (theratguru in youtube is recommended often). Because you should definitely NOT get one rat, but two or more because they are highly social and need the company of other rats :)
What if you start hating your rats? :) Everyone takes great care of their new pets, but as time goes past and the pet(s) are not as interesting anymore the care can get annoying to do etc which causes some people to neglect their pet.
I understand your parents - you didnt take your responsibility of your previous pets, why should they get you a new pet? Most likely they are worried that you will once again not take good care of your pet(s) (and rats usually are not pets that parents favor).
NOAHSWIFE2007 maybe, but I honestly don't think he could have done anything differently. My mom was the one that bought them for me, and I was a stupid teen who didn't do any real research before buying and just listened to what the seller told me about them for a while. When I did realize how much they needed I did my best to provide for them, but honestly there was probably some sort of environmental problem that I hadn't addressed that stressed them out. I'll admit that they were not my proudest moment as a pet owner. I definitely learned a lesson about impulse buys and borderline evil pet sellers.
K1w1 Crush if you want rats like the other comment said you can’t simply just buy one. i personally own 4 ratties and there is a whole lot of care that needs to be put into them you can’t just get bored of them and let them sit in the cage just feeding and watering them. they MUST be taken out every day to exercise and keep them from feeling bored. if your rats get bored they’ll get depressed and they won’t want you to play with them. there highly intelligent animals and they make good pets for a person who has the time for them. but you need to remember they are needy and need lots of attention
I GOT A CRAB FEST AD BEFORE THIS VIDEO💀💀💀
Yanille Colon lol
Yanille Colon dood I got a red lobster ad 😂
Yanille Colon sameeee
Yanille Colon same
Yanille Colon I got ziplog
Thank you so much Taylor. I have a hermit crab and im 12. I never knew about this. It really helps me. I knew it was troublesome to care for one. Again thank you, he is doing so much better now.
this helped me so much and i was going to get some hermit crabs then i wached this vid and i learnde so much from it...thank u and keep posting more vids
You should make a video educating people about buying bunnies at Easter. I used to work at a rescue and the amount of abandoned bunnies we got right after Easter would quadruple! Most people don't realize the care that goes into looking after a rabbit.
No lie my son wants a pacman frog and i told him lets just get a hermit crab. Thank you for enlightening me.
About the pacman frog 2
god bless
Pac man frogs die to quick
wow great mom (sarcastic)
What is a Pacman frog
She opened my eyes. Thank u
“You see hermit crabs all the time in painted shells at the store”

I THOUGHT THE TITLE SAID "Stop Bullying Your Children Hermit Crabs"
Bella Molina same😅
Bella Molina But what does it say then?
😂😂😂
i only thought it said stop bullying your children lmao
Well don't do that either
I saw the title
My reaction: CRAP I HAVE A HERMIT CRAB
Edit*** I'm watching the vid rn and mine has a natural shell not painted**
Liz Sweeney check out hermit crab groups on Facebook. They can give you a lot of good information on your cool pets
Don't feel badly for having a hermit crab that you love/like and care for. Just because someone else doesn't have one or agree with others having them, doesn't mean you can't. I had them growing up and they were always taken care of. Just because she hated the experience, doesn't mean others can't enjoy it. She also has 30 or 40 freaking animals at the same time (which is going to become stressful). She admittedly has gotten animals that came from the wild, the ocean. And, obviously, she had a hermit crab herself (that went thru that same, exact process). Sooooo.... yep. Don't feel bad. 😁
Your easy on the eyes and I learned a lot. Really good video and I learned allot. Thanks.
I’m late to the game here, but I just randomly came across this video...I inherited two hermits (purple pinchers) in 2013. I had no interest in them before but I like caring for animals & I’m committed to Poncho & Lefty for the long haul. I’m quite proud of their 25 gallon tank, burrow-worthy substrate, varieties of food/minerals/water, and enrichment. I find the hardest thing is to find natural turbo shells that are large enough for these guys. My best recommendation for pre-made food and other resources is The Hermit Crab Patch - they are wonderful & have great customer service!
My parents got me a hermit crab when I was a kid and it died within a few months. NEVER GET YOUR KID A PET AND EXPECT THEM TO TAKE CARE OF THEM! I NEGLECTED MY CRAB AND NOW I FEEL AWFUL!
I Only Comment Things That I Said Outloud It's not your fault! You were a kid and didn't know any better.
I did the same thing when I got one in grade school (the lower grades)
I did the same thing when I was about ten years old. I still feel kind of bad about it. At least now I know better and my current crabs are living in a great home.
I am a kid and my hermit crab just died 2 days ago after 3 years. I feel like I should have known more about him. I think he died because he got out of his cage and got himself stuck on an air vent. He meant so much to me. 😓
It's not your fault you were young and didn't know what to do with it they should feel guilty
My sister and I had two little hermit crabs and I kept telling my mom we needed a humidifier and a heat source but she wouldn't buy us one ): We got the perfect habitat and everything for them, but they died after a week because of the lack of heat ):
Don't get pets you can't care for!! I am kinda being hypocritical because the same thing happened to me a few years ago with mine.. Except they didn't die. You learn from your mistakes, right?
Tori Mcginnis Well we *were* able to care for them, but at the last minute my mom dropped out on us lol.
Its hard when your parents don't listen about stuff like that, my dad got me a monitor lizard (a huge responsibility!) And I had a hell of a time getting him what he needed because dad didn't understand how important it was and I was only 16.
Jess Yeah. It really sucks ):
humidifiers can actually cause floods over a period of time and aren't recommended. I think what Tori Mcginnis was trying to say is don't get pets *you* can't care for. If you have to depend on mom/dad/whoever to get things best not get the animal until you're fully educated and able to care for it yourself in all aspects.
I bought some today and I did so to rescue them. I've done so much research on them. I've been up all night just cheaking the temp and hum on the tank.
"One of the most neglected pets" spiders: allow me to introduce myself
I had hermit crabs growing up, now I feel horrible 😭
Its okay... because you didnt know this at that time
You should definitely be ashamed 😑should have gotten a Scorpion instead . They don't even need shells
I did too. They somehow got out all the time and one even got to the floor. Scared the shit out of me XD

Hermit crabs are fantastic pets, but they are for advanced keepers only. One should always read up on what animal you're keeping, whether it is a hermit crab, a tarantula, fish, or a cat. The information pet stores give out can't be trusted, and you should always do your own research.
Oliver P, i completely agree, i do that as well, but the internet is not always 100 percent accurate.
My friend had the cutest hermit crabs when I was in middle school and they're still alive today after 10 years. I'm surprised about how much my friend knew now back when we were 12. But I'm glad you made this video.
I have three crabs in a big tank with natural stuff. i=I take them out and play. They are loved and cared for
when i read Take them out and play im imagining you putting your crabs on a mini leash and walking them around😂
im a male same
@@botagozmh dats so cute im immagining them going on a mini slide and mini swings heheh

Wow. I didn't know ANY of this! Great info!
I love your video’s!! Very informational. I love the video of you saving the turtles. Your videos are inspirational and have me trying to make videos also!
Fully support the PETA dislike, they run high-kill pet shelters and have done some really shitty things for 'animal rights'. A lot of the things even include HURTING them.
Counter-productive, really, donate to Vet Ranch if you want to support something good.
nice icon
I couldn't have anyone accidentally take me seriously now, could I?
burninginhell yooo vet ranch is the bomb
burninginhell VetRanch is the best!!
I like vet ranch. ☺ I don't like peta, their creepy and all the stories I have heard about what they do is too crazy for me to support.
Omfg I love hermit crabs but right before this video there was a red lobster “crab fest” add smh
Taygan Rogers the ad i got was about this game about playing as marine life, i don't think she chooses the ads she just monotizes them and they choose the ads for her.
Taygan Rogers that is of course just if you're implying she did that on purpose which im not saying you are*
Two very different crabs.
"that is of course just if you're implying she did that on purpose which im not saying you are" like... what did you even say anything then? :'D
... that's if we assume you did this but you did not do this but i have to say something anyway.
ahahahahaha wtf :D
OFMG what a karma the girl I was with last night had crabs ! Not hermit crabs or lobster either if you know what I mean ! lol I hate crabs !
I have had my hermit crabs for a little while now and I am now rlly regretting buying one. But there was very good informative in this video
when she’s thanking everyone for 700k but it’s almost 3 yrs later and she’s almost at 2 mil. such a legend
And she is never active anymore i think she quit
Honestly, The crabs aren't bad pets, The people that handle them are.
Cadence Krieg so true
Cadence Krieg I agree. People make horrible pets.
Corrine Wang in fifth grade we had hermit crabs and at the end of the year everyone who wanted one got to take one home and oh god... why would my fifth grade teacher trust a bunch of 10 year old kids with hermit crabs.
Cadence Krieg I agree I had my hermit crab for 7 years. It lived longer because I feed real food not that fake crap. I just recently lost it.
Cadence Krieg agree
One of my friends moved and gave my sister her hermit crab for her birthday. My sister never took care of it so it became mine. I loved him so much I took him to class every Friday and let the kids in the class look at him. He was my personal pet and it freaked me out the first time he "molted" I thought he had died (don't worry I didn't throw him away). I had him for two years, I don't know how long my friend had him. One day my family went out of town so we got a friend to babysit him and that day he decided to climb out and look for me so we called him Houdini. He passed less than a year ago and I would just like to say.. Rest In Peace Lil Bud I Still miss you but I know somewhere you are out enjoying the beach... RIP Houdini ????-2016
Edit:don't worry he didn't have a painted shell
Amelie Johnston
aww.... r.i.p...
Wait what I didn't know that hermit crabs molted and I thought mine died and threw it away...I thought my hermit crab killed itself...
royaling thank you :( --> :)
THANK YOU! THIS NEVER GETS TALKED ABOUT! I got a hermit crab when I was 4 and I’m 14 now! He lives in An over 40 gallon tank and he eats fruits and veggies and meat and grains everyday with Hugh humidity heat and 7 inches of bedding to dig in and a lot of hides and both salt and fresh water and plenty natural shells (he doesn’t live with others because he tries to ate them I know they are communal) if I get more ever I will adopt because the trade is awful!
Hi yeah, I know its been a year but I have questions, If your willing to answer them, Im scared that my hermit crab is molting but I cant tell whether he s or isnt, ive been doing research and it tells me that they bury themselves when they molt. The thing is he buries himself all the time and im scared that im like disturbing him, By putting him on top of his food. I want him to live and be happy so i know you might not answer, but if you could answer that would be nice.
I didn’t know any of this, thank you for all the tips to take care of mine :)
My hermit crab ate his brother...
Im a vegan
My hermit crab wasn't...
Michaela Wright omg lmao
she mentioned that in the video at like 9:35
I will be working at petsmart and I will make sure people have the right place for there animals
Mehs can you let us know if petsmart really treats animals wrong?
Abbey Houston yeye
Abbey Houston I worked at petsmsrt and my petsmsrt loved their animals and treated them well , the controversy they had was mostly due to the breeders they were getting their pets from , when they learned of the cruelty they switched to different ones.
why would you support the evil organization you pet hating bigot?
Abbey Houston - There are already a bunch of videos on this topic if you're looking to learn.
Hello! I'm actually planning on getting hermit crabs and this was very informational. If I do end up getting them I will make sure to follow this to a T.
I had wanted one as a kid. They were always available in the mall and around China town in plastic containers for $5. I’m happy I’ve never got one. I’ve learned so much from this video. Thank you.
Finally someone who can understand and relate to my dislike of peta.
Feline Factor357 I hate their methods so much... They've been known to flour bomb and throw paint on those wearing fur(one huge issue I have with this is you can't tell the difference between real fur and faux fur just by looking so they could be punishing somebody who isn't even wearing real fur).... They also tried to make up this story of supposed abuse during the making of "a dogs purpose" that was completely disproven... I'm all for animal rights advocation. But peta can eat a bag of dicks for all I care.
Feline Factor357 I agree I hate pita
Lily Eberhard the bread ? Jks
peta supporting BSL laws is a deal breaker for me
I'm yet to meet someone that *likes* PETA lol.
I'm vegan and a huge supporter of animals rights and I dislike them, a lot.
that moment when i finally got a mastercard and i am supper happy the merch is back so i can finally buy a cheese shirt. i click on the link, pick the shirt and start filling out the customer information and than i get to the part where it says "country". i start scrolling and scrolling and after a few seconds i realize my country is not on the list... and now i am seriously considering moving to a different county for like a month just so i can buy this shirt.
and the saddest/funniest thing is that they ship to all four of my neighboring countries..
Where do you live? Do you know if they ship to Denmark?
who can say where the road goes
i live in Slovenia. And yes i think they do ship to Denmark
Take a blank shirt, print out picture of cheese on transfer paper, iron on the transfer to the plain shirt, and BOOM! You now have a cheese shirt without needing to leave your country. :p
I rescued both my hermit crabs from the county fair in a game, unknowing of anything about them, their care, or what the process of bringing them into captivity was. I immediately went home and began researching everything I could find to make sure I gave my little buds the best care I could provide. Sadly, I had absolutely no idea how long they lived or how truly complicated their care was. It's truly interesting, and it hasn't in the slightest deterred me from giving them proper care, but its quite sad considering just how little of information people know about them. Luckily though, my boyfriend had an extra 10gal glass enclosure so I was able to very quickly put them in a proper environment. I would never knowingly purchase them again, however I'm looking forward to seeing these guys hopefully grow into content little buddies. (defo would upgrade tanks once they get bigger, right now theyre barely bigger than quarters)
When I was about 6 years old my mom for two hermit crabs. We both had no idea how to take care of them, they had painted shells and I kept them in one of the small plastic containers that they sell with them on our patio with some sand from the beach and a water dish. That was all. One day, months later, I went to look at the cage and one was gone. To this day I have no idea what happened to him, but my mom decided to just let the other one free in our backyard. 🤦🏼♀️ I am now so sad as I realize how terribly taken care of they were, and I hope new hermit crab owners can learn from my mistakes.
I have two pet rats, could you please make a video of how to take care of pet rats??? They are wonderful unappreciated animals and so much stigma surrounds them. It hurts me when I see rat traps and rat poison and rat chew toys for sale in shops, when they are actually so loving and intelligent and the best pets I ever had.
Lili Koch my neighbor has rats. but they ain't pets. my dogs keep them away. so we don't have to trap. but they do need to be killed sometimes (hawks, cats, owls, and other animals do that) or other wise our house will also become infested. Don't k ow of you heard but there rats are getting alot bigger. my dad found a dead one as big as his forearm.
oh I'm not disagreeing they are probably great pets
Lili Koch I have 7 rats and I love them so much
Lili Koch I have rats too
nicky Alexandre you are gross and diseased you uneducated piece of shit
I had a hermit crab and I regret getting it. Once I brought it home I hated it and never really took care of it. I mean I obviously fed it, but I didn't really like it and I never really payed attention to it. It died and I honestly think it killed itself as ridiculous as that sounds. I think parents should stop buying their children hermit crabs and I honestly regret getting a hermit crab.
Couldn't come up with a username At least your honest 😭
i think mine killed itself too??? it crawled out of its shell and stayed out even though we had empty extras about 2-3 inches away from it
Grace Dean same
Couldn't come up with a username I highly doubt it killed itself, you just took bad care of him and accidentally murdered him
Oceania HD EVERY year?? They can live for 30 years in the wild and in great care.
I’m 18 and have only ever had a dog (she’s 6 right now 😊), I’m about to get two hermit crabs to legit take care of and do everything they need and give them natural shells to choose from as well, I’m not about to treat them like crap. I want to take care of them and watch them grow and be there for them. I’m super excited to mother some (: and I remembered you made this video on them so I’ll definitely be following your advice!
loving your videos just started watching thanks for your awesome advice #loving your animals
You know the drill
But do u know that with geico u can save 15% or more on car insurance
Lol!
Shuyi Xu that's a good one lol
Shuyi Xu that's different
Shuyi Xu X3
Wtf
Fun fact: Hermit Crabs can live up to 30 years in their natural habitat, but at most 2 years if kept in captivity
Edit: I just wanna say that I'm so glad all of you guys truly take care of your hermit crabs😊! And this is just a fact I heard on the internet and yah know "the internet is always true"😂
Did you mean 20 years in captivity?
Mimi Frogbutt sadly no, once hermit crabs are kept as pets, there life span decreases a lot, it is possible for them to live a bit longer but that's very unlikely
Actually I have had my shortest lifespan for a hermit crab be 4 years... and that was one with a painted shell when I bought it. (The only one I got with a painted shell). I also just recently lost another one at 6-7 years of age at least (kinda lost count). If your hermit crabs are only living 2 years, then something is wrong with the way you are taking care of them.
Caroline Quinn I have hermit crabs that are over 10 years old. There's people in my hermit crab group that have a 30 year old crab! While they can die quickly in captivity if you give them the proper environment they can live for a long, long time
Does a 30 year old crab end up huge?
I had one as a child that someone pre owned that was roughly 5 years old, and he lived to be ROUGHLY 16/17.
I honestly loved mine, and I didn’t have the BEST conditions for mine, but i had the right food, water, shelter, heat source, and cage.
I had him out often and he would take food directly from my hand.
This was also YEARS ago, and we only had the information the owner of the pet store gave us. Internet wasn’t THRIVING every answer then, and we didn’t even have it without going to the library at certain times.
I want to have another enclosure eventually with a good lil society of hermit crabs when I am financially able and can give them EVERYTHING they need. Like an 80 gallon or something for 6 or 7 lil crabs.
Loved it. thank you so very much for the video.
I feel so guilty because after my hamster died my mom wanted to have a “easy” pet to care for, so we went to pet smart and got a hermit crab.
When we got him the employee only told us that we needed a sponge in his water bowl to drink from. He lived in a smallish cage and of course we didn’t know anything that you told us. We had no idea he needed a heated light, and that he needed a huge cage with 6 inches of dirt. No wonder after 3 days he died... (btw I know we was fully dead and was not shedding because his body was not in the shell)
Hate to be that guy but,
You're*
Also, please don't call them retarded. You are just being rude for no reason in particular. It was not their fault since they were a child. It was most likely the employees fault (and a bit of the moms fault).
I have a problem my parents don't seem to listen to me when I say that our 2 hermit crabs need a bigger tank, heat lamp, humidifier, and more sand they don't seem to care I try to explain to them that their conditions aren't acceptable
They actually really don't need a heat lamp, or a humidifier. As long as you get a solid glass top or cover the metal mesh top with plastic wrap the humidity generated from the water pools should be plenty. If not just mist it down lightly a couple times. A humidifier for the tank (like the kind of reptiles) would likely flood the tank. A heat lamp isn't ideal, try a heat pad on the back of the tank instead. It should go above the substrate line
Beatriz Simental you need to give your hermits away ASAP, or get enough money for their things. Honestly, you shouldn't be owning them.
I heard that heat lamps are not good for hermit crabs because it will dry them out
Ariana Smith it isnt their fault
Yea I would give them to someone who can take care of them.. They dont really need a heat lamp or humidifier. You can mist them with a spray bottle of water but you have to let the water sit a couple of days first to purify it.. If you can put some rocks and sticks in the tank or whatever u have him in and try to get some sand. Make sure its not stuff that has been fumigated before by the insect guy :/ you can bake the sand to kill any bugs or bacteria in it and sift it also to get any foreign objects out of it. You also need salt water for him which you will need to buy at a pet store.. Or if you live near salt water ponds or a beach you can grab some out until you can buy it but other than that u dont need a lot of stuff.. I hope u can find them a good home if your parents can't help you with that bud :/
I saw a hermit crab get ran over by a bus and......
IT SOME HOW LIVED THERE SO STRONG
Um woah
I felt really bad going into this video because my family used to keep hermit crabs when I was little, and I had to check with my mom after watching this and I am very relieved to say that we never threw away live crabs as none of them "died" in their shells and were actually molting. Now that I'm learning more about them I can tell we didn't raise them perfectly, but they were never alone and never attacked each other... or us for that matter. Even though I'm not planning on getting hermit crabs any time soon, I'm glad to have learned quite a few new things from this.
I don't have hermet crabs. I don't know what hermet crabs are. I don't know why I'm here.
It comes down to parents thinking their children are little angels and just giving them a pet cause their cute. A half a year to a year later they end up getting rid of the pet/ or it dies do to the stress the child/family puts on it.
I was one of those weird kids that legitimately took good care of their pets, but I'd get horrified when my friends at school would get a pet, and they'd treat it horribly, or ignore it because it wasn't 'interesting'. Whereas I played with my pets for hours at a time and never lost interest. Course my mother also had a policy of 'you don't get to eat until you feed your animals'. Loads of parents don't teach their kids responsibility, even though kids are fully capable of it if they are properly taught from day one.
No, I think it's a matter of buying less high-maintenance pets if the ownership goes solely to the child. I think pets can be great responsibility training with supervision, I've had friends that has taken care of cats since elementary school. Of course this is helped by parents who give a shit.
It's also a good idea to make sure your kids actually want a pet too, my mum just forced animals on me like she did after-school classes without bothering to see if I was interested. When I was 7 I fed two gerbils to our cat because they kept me up at night chewing the bars on their cage. I love animals now but I think handing them to young children willy nilly is irresponsible.
I was taught respectfor animals at a very young age. I absolutely hated when others abused them...weather a little crab or spider or kitten... Broke my heart
Not really... it comes down to teaching your child responsibility and care. My son has had his hermit crabs for two years. After this video I will not purchase more for him, but we're giving them great lives. I had pets growing up. All exceeded their life span and were very happy.
The beginning is a mood.
I used to have them as a 7 year old and took them from my beach. I had mine up to 6 years, and so I believe they're well taken care of. They were already old when I got them. I take care of them *very* seriously, did research, etc. I loved them a lot.
