    When I was a kid my mother got me a hermit crab at the local mall. I loved him, but we didn't know how to look after him properly. My mom threw him in the trash when his molt fell out of his shell. I had no idea until years later that he wasn't dead when she threw him away, still upset to this day.

    I think hamsters are the most neglected pets; people buy them cages that are way too small, and use them as decorations. My brother has a Robo hamster, and ignores him! No wonder he’s so mean. I have to feed him, and water him. My brother also has tiny cage for him. I beg him to let me take care of him but he declines. Sometimes I put him in my hamster’s larger cage and take out my hamster so he can play with his toys.

    • @jessephillips2328
      @jessephillips2328 5 лет назад +101

      Late, but I think hermit crabs take the cake for most neglected pet. Not only are they never captive bred, but literally EVERY SINGLE ITEM in the hermit crab section is dangerous for them and will kill them. Hamsters are definitely up there in the list but hermit crabs basically have no chance for a good life when they are sold.

    If you think your hermit crab is molting: please please DO NOT TOUCH IT! do not try and remove it no matter how "careful" you do it. If it hasn't shed completely you could quite literally pull its legs off. They also NEED to eat their old exoskeleton do not remove/ throw it away. It is super important to regain their strength after molting. The best and only sure way to know if it is dead: is it smells, REALLY bad. Basically don't touch the hermit crab (like ever they are prey animals) unless it literally smells like death, and in that case, you can remove it. (Also I thumbed up because this was mostly accurate, but I wanted to add this bit of info)

    • @arieltran8335
      @arieltran8335 6 лет назад +1

      Freckles 24 based off my research I thought that most of the time you won't even see their exoskeleton because they are underground and that it's extremely stressful for them to have to molt on the surface just wanted to add that or maybe someone could correct. I don't have hermits of my own so I don't have an real experience. I do agree with everything you said though.

    • @jacieshockney6201
      @jacieshockney6201 6 лет назад

      You are correct they molt underground but sometimes an unknowning owner will dig them up or if the substrate isn't deep enough and they surface molt then you might see the exoskeleton. But if they are surface molting it means something is very wrong with their conditions.

    I have 15 hermit crabs in a 150 gallon aquarium. Temp is steady at 78-80 degrees. Humidity stays at around 90-100%. 10-12inches of eco earth mixed with high grade play sand. They have two 7 inch deep pools 1 salt water 1 fresh water with bubblers to keep the water circulated. I also have over 100 beautiful shells in a bunch of different sizes. I feed them shrimp, eggs, bugs, organic baby food, apples etc. Their tank has A LOT of drift wood and hides to keep them entertained.They are awesome pets if you treat them right and the tanks are beautiful to look at. Don't buy them for your kids and if you do please do the research.

    When I was 12 I wanted a hamster so bad, so to prove my responsibility to my parents I asked for hermit crabs. My dad did hours and hours of research, got me an exoterra, a heat lamp and mat, thermometer/ humidity measurer, no painted shells, etc etc to make sure everything was okay. I did research too and took care of my two crabs every day and misted them, had salt and fresh water, etc. we put so much effort into them, spending tons of time and money on them. We had a molt / quarantine tank. Having all these resources on how to adequately care for these crabs from such a young age, I still don’t recommend them as pets. I especially don’t recommend them for someone looking for an interactive pet, because all they really do is crawl and climb.
    I still think they’re great creatures, but I don’t think I’d buy any again anytime soon. Unless I can find captive bred, which is unlikely.

    you should make a video about pets that could be good for kids/ families, i am not a kid nor do i have a family of my own but i think it would be helpful to give some suggestions for families that do want pets. you always suggest what not to get but i think it would be interesting to hear about the opposite situation:) just a thought. i love u and i love how you're informing people about the truth of responsible pet owning❤️❤️

    • @azuradawn5683

      IMO adopt a dog. As long as the kid is capable of feeding a pet and taking it outside and won't be aggressive/abusive to it... a dog is a pretty foolproof family pet. They're going to let you know when something is wrong a lot more than most animals will so that takes out a lot of the guesswork of "is my pet happy/well-fed/doing okay" and it's easier to find a vet that takes care of dogs than any other pet. Dogs also typically only live ~15 years so you're not signing up for a lifetime commitment in the way that you are with a turtle or bird. Dogs are also going to be so much more of what a kid wants in a pet than anything else is. Kids want something they can play with - cats and snakes and some fish are easy enough to care for that they would fit that part, but they're not fun. Small mammals are a popular option for kids because they seem easy, but they aren't and they end up dying super early and if they do survive for more than a few months, kids get sick of taking care of them because they "don't do anything". I don't have (nor want) children but based on my childhood with pets and having a decent understanding of animals in general, I'd seriously say that a dog is the only real option for most kids.

    • @spacepooch8265

      Melissa Michael I wouldn't say that dog is a 'foolproof' pet. Feeding and walking it are not the only thing you have to do. I wouldn't get a any pet just for a kid. My family had 3 dogs when I was a kid, and got my own at the age of 15. I had no idea that the dog would take so my time. Also, the dogs breed really matters.
      (I don't know what kind of cats you have seen, but the ones we have love playing with kids, and love sitting on kids laps when they are watching television.)

    • @obsessedme5484
      @obsessedme5484 6 лет назад +4

      a dog is good for people who don't go on holiday/can go with a dog/have someone to take care of it while they're gone/have the money to put it in a "center" while they're gone. I always wanted a dog but my parents always refused because of that. The problem with dog is that they're "big" animals, they can't stay in a cage/tank for most of the day like a hamster or a fish. I think hamsters or bunnies are good because they can stay in a big cage for several hours and then go out everyday to play with the kids. They're not too hard to feed and the cage is easy to clean up. OF COURSE the parents must do good research and always be with the kids to educate them properly on how to take good care of their pets, but they're easy pets so yeah.

    when i was uh.... i'm gonna say about 7 years old, i was at the beach with my mum having a normal day. i will never forget this.
    there is a huge pile of thousands of rocks at the beach near my house. they (the rocks) are normally about halfway in the water.
    my cousins and I liked to go search for crabs and hermit crabs in the rocks because there was and still is a large population of them in there. so when we were looking for them one day (we always put them temporarily in a beach bucket to look at the for about 30 seconds then release them.) one of them, when it had been in the bucket for i'm gonna say about 10 seconds, it actually came out of its shell and was completely naked. we were like "OMG WHAT DO WE DO" so we brought it back near our beach towels and stuff where we were sitting and go some water, rocks, and sand in the bucket. we then rushed to get some bigger shells than the size of the old one. we got about 5 shells and placed them in the water with it. it actually liked one and got into it. i was so extremely happy that i almost started crying because i knew we had just probably saved the little guy's life.
    p.s. thx for reading my crazy long comment xD

    Thank you for saying this. My ex bought crabs for our kids. After two deaths I took them over, and managed to keep them alive for several years. I still have one.... I've had it for about 5 years. There isn't much reward in keeping them after the novelty wears off, but i have taken it on as a quest because its not their little bug eyed fault they wound up here. You have to buy or get different shells, feed them, manage their environment, etc. One way I used to enjoy them was I had a webcam running on the tank 24/7 that was recording. If you take the recordings and watch them at X16 speed the little buggers perk right up and do all sorts of stuff.

    I can 100% confirm this, when I was like 7 I BEGGED for a hermit crab and at that time I was getting all of my information from petsmart who told me that they lived 5 years and didn’t need anything bigger than a 10 gallon so I managed to convince my mother that these were low maintenance little things and I got two...
    big mistake, one died a couple of years later and the one that lived got very depressed so I got another crab, well my original one killed it so I was very confused at that point and just let it live on it’s own. Fast forward to like 5 years ago I finally got it a bigger tank, 40 gallons with ample space to climb and explore; I tried getting another hermit crab and it got killed, then I tried again and it got killed so at this point I just haven’t bothered trying again (if anyone has advice I’d appreciate it because I don’t want the crab to be lonely but she will literally rip up the other crab). I love her, I feed her well (new mixture every day with a few added commercial pellets) and she molts regularly and has the right conditions to live long but if I had to do it again I definitely would not have gotten her. These are NOT pets for kids and aren’t even good pets for most adults.

      (I know there's a chance you could've already solved this or the crab's dead but)
      You might be getting female crabs. Try getting a male.
      If this doesn't work,you could put muiltple food bowls or water bowls across the tank, so they won't compete. And get a lot of new shells each time,too.

    I had two hermit crabs when I was a teenager and I hated them so much. I bought them at this gift shop from this tourist trap area in Florida, and I did not expect all the work they would take. I hated the coconut stuff they were in, it's the only time I've ever had bugs grow in my pets substrate, I hated handling them because they pinched, I hated how much work they were (because I hadn't expected it). They were really neat little guys, but dang. After my research I tried my best to make a good home for them, and they lived for a little over a year, and then one day ( I had been gone for a few days and my dad was supposed to be in charge) I take off the lid to change food/water etc. and found that one of my crabs had apparently torn the other out of his shell, and then crawled naked into the corner and died anyway. I figured I didn't have the right shell sizes and they ended up fighting over them (I had a few in the enclosure, but it was getting hard for me to find shells that would work for them, since I knew painted shells could have toxic flakes peel off that they could eat and so I wouldn't buy them). It was gross and horrifying and disturbing and they look like aliens when they're naked and in conclusion, while I loved my individual pets it was pretty much the worst pet experience I've ever had (and I've had dogs,cats,fish,lizards,snakes,birds,ferrets,etc, so I'm familiar with pet care). Also in conclusion, never ever ever trust the person your buying your new pet from to know what's good for them and don't ever buy something your not already familiar with the care of. Impulse buys are exciting, but ultimately you'll always regret jumping into the work without thinking it through.

      Well, I mean... If you want ratS you should maybe do some more research from trusted sources (theratguru in youtube is recommended often). Because you should definitely NOT get one rat, but two or more because they are highly social and need the company of other rats :)
      What if you start hating your rats? :) Everyone takes great care of their new pets, but as time goes past and the pet(s) are not as interesting anymore the care can get annoying to do etc which causes some people to neglect their pet.
      I understand your parents - you didnt take your responsibility of your previous pets, why should they get you a new pet? Most likely they are worried that you will once again not take good care of your pet(s) (and rats usually are not pets that parents favor).

    • @Cleptrio
      @Cleptrio 6 лет назад +3

      NOAHSWIFE2007 maybe, but I honestly don't think he could have done anything differently. My mom was the one that bought them for me, and I was a stupid teen who didn't do any real research before buying and just listened to what the seller told me about them for a while. When I did realize how much they needed I did my best to provide for them, but honestly there was probably some sort of environmental problem that I hadn't addressed that stressed them out. I'll admit that they were not my proudest moment as a pet owner. I definitely learned a lesson about impulse buys and borderline evil pet sellers.

      K1w1 Crush if you want rats like the other comment said you can’t simply just buy one. i personally own 4 ratties and there is a whole lot of care that needs to be put into them you can’t just get bored of them and let them sit in the cage just feeding and watering them. they MUST be taken out every day to exercise and keep them from feeling bored. if your rats get bored they’ll get depressed and they won’t want you to play with them. there highly intelligent animals and they make good pets for a person who has the time for them. but you need to remember they are needy and need lots of attention

      Don't feel badly for having a hermit crab that you love/like and care for. Just because someone else doesn't have one or agree with others having them, doesn't mean you can't. I had them growing up and they were always taken care of. Just because she hated the experience, doesn't mean others can't enjoy it. She also has 30 or 40 freaking animals at the same time (which is going to become stressful). She admittedly has gotten animals that came from the wild, the ocean. And, obviously, she had a hermit crab herself (that went thru that same, exact process). Sooooo.... yep. Don't feel bad. 😁

I had no interest in them before but I like caring for animals & I’m committed to Poncho & Lefty for the long haul. I’m quite proud of their 25 gallon tank, burrow-worthy substrate, varieties of food/minerals/water, and enrichment. I find the hardest thing is to find natural turbo shells that are large enough for these guys. My best recommendation for pre-made food and other resources is The Hermit Crab Patch - they are wonderful & have great customer service!

      I am a kid and my hermit crab just died 2 days ago after 3 years. I feel like I should have known more about him. I think he died because he got out of his cage and got himself stuck on an air vent. He meant so much to me. 😓

      humidifiers can actually cause floods over a period of time and aren't recommended. I think what Tori Mcginnis was trying to say is don't get pets *you* can't care for. If you have to depend on mom/dad/whoever to get things best not get the animal until you're fully educated and able to care for it yourself in all aspects.

    Hermit crabs are fantastic pets, but they are for advanced keepers only. One should always read up on what animal you're keeping, whether it is a hermit crab, a tarantula, fish, or a cat. The information pet stores give out can't be trusted, and you should always do your own research.

    One of my friends moved and gave my sister her hermit crab for her birthday. My sister never took care of it so it became mine. I loved him so much I took him to class every Friday and let the kids in the class look at him. He was my personal pet and it freaked me out the first time he "molted" I thought he had died (don't worry I didn't throw him away). I had him for two years, I don't know how long my friend had him. One day my family went out of town so we got a friend to babysit him and that day he decided to climb out and look for me so we called him Houdini. He passed less than a year ago and I would just like to say.. Rest In Peace Lil Bud I Still miss you but I know somewhere you are out enjoying the beach... RIP Houdini ????-2016

The thing is he buries himself all the time and im scared that im like disturbing him, By putting him on top of his food. I rescued both my hermit crabs from the county fair in a game, unknowing of anything about them, their care, or what the process of bringing them into captivity was. I immediately went home and began researching everything I could find to make sure I gave my little buds the best care I could provide. Sadly, I had absolutely no idea how long they lived or how truly complicated their care was. It's truly interesting, and it hasn't in the slightest deterred me from giving them proper care, but its quite sad considering just how little of information people know about them. Luckily though, my boyfriend had an extra 10gal glass enclosure so I was able to very quickly put them in a proper environment. I would never knowingly purchase them again, however I'm looking forward to seeing these guys hopefully grow into content little buddies. (defo would upgrade tanks once they get bigger, right now theyre barely bigger than quarters)

    When I was about 6 years old my mom for two hermit crabs. We both had no idea how to take care of them, they had painted shells and I kept them in one of the small plastic containers that they sell with them on our patio with some sand from the beach and a water dish. That was all. One day, months later, I went to look at the cage and one was gone. To this day I have no idea what happened to him, but my mom decided to just let the other one free in our backyard. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I am now so sad as I realize how terribly taken care of they were, and I hope new hermit crab owners can learn from my mistakes.

      Actually I have had my shortest lifespan for a hermit crab be 4 years... and that was one with a painted shell when I bought it. (The only one I got with a painted shell). I also just recently lost another one at 6-7 years of age at least (kinda lost count). If your hermit crabs are only living 2 years, then something is wrong with the way you are taking care of them.

    I had one as a child that someone pre owned that was roughly 5 years old, and he lived to be ROUGHLY 16/17.
    I honestly loved mine, and I didn’t have the BEST conditions for mine, but i had the right food, water, shelter, heat source, and cage.
    I had him out often and he would take food directly from my hand.
    This was also YEARS ago, and we only had the information the owner of the pet store gave us. Internet wasn’t THRIVING every answer then, and we didn’t even have it without going to the library at certain times.
    I want to have another enclosure eventually with a good lil society of hermit crabs when I am financially able and can give them EVERYTHING they need. Like an 80 gallon or something for 6 or 7 lil crabs.

    I feel so guilty because after my hamster died my mom wanted to have a “easy” pet to care for, so we went to pet smart and got a hermit crab.
    When we got him the employee only told us that we needed a sponge in his water bowl to drink from. He lived in a smallish cage and of course we didn’t know anything that you told us. We had no idea he needed a heated light, and that he needed a huge cage with 6 inches of dirt. No wonder after 3 days he died... (btw I know we was fully dead and was not shedding because his body was not in the shell)

      You're*
      Also, please don't call them retarded. You are just being rude for no reason in particular. It was not their fault since they were a child. It was most likely the employees fault (and a bit of the moms fault).

    I have a problem my parents don't seem to listen to me when I say that our 2 hermit crabs need a bigger tank,heat lamp,humidifier,and more sand they don't seem to care I try to explain to them that their conditions aren't acceptable

      They actually really don't need a heat lamp, or a humidifier. As long as you get a solid glass top or cover the metal mesh top with plastic wrap the humidity generated from the water pools should be plenty. If not just mist it down lightly a couple times. A humidifier for the tank (like the kind of reptiles) would likely flood the tank. A heat lamp isn't ideal, try a heat pad on the back of the tank instead. It should go above the substrate line

      Beatriz Simental you need to give your hermits away ASAP, or get enough money for their things. Honestly, you shouldn't be owning them.

      I heard that heat lamps are not good for hermit crabs because it will dry them out

      Yea I would give them to someone who can take care of them.. They dont really need a heat lamp or humidifier. You can mist them with a spray bottle of water but you have to let the water sit a couple of days first to purify it.. If you can put some rocks and sticks in the tank or whatever u have him in and try to get some sand. Make sure its not stuff that has been fumigated before by the insect guy :/ you can bake the sand to kill any bugs or bacteria in it and sift it also to get any foreign objects out of it. You also need salt water for him which you will need to buy at a pet store.. Or if you live near salt water ponds or a beach you can grab some out until you can buy it but other than that u dont need a lot of stuff.. I hope u can find them a good home if your parents can't help you with that bud :/

    I felt really bad going into this video because my family used to keep hermit crabs when I was little, and I had to check with my mom after watching this and I am very relieved to say that we never threw away live crabs as none of them "died" in their shells and were actually molting. Now that I'm learning more about them I can tell we didn't raise them perfectly, but they were never alone and never attacked each other... or us for that matter. Even though I'm not planning on getting hermit crabs any time soon, I'm glad to have learned quite a few new things from this.

    It comes down to parents thinking their children are little angels and just giving them a pet cause their cute. A half a year to a year later they end up getting rid of the pet/ or it dies do to the stress the child/family puts on it.

      I was one of those weird kids that legitimately took good care of their pets, but I'd get horrified when my friends at school would get a pet, and they'd treat it horribly, or ignore it because it wasn't 'interesting'. Whereas I played with my pets for hours at a time and never lost interest. Course my mother also had a policy of 'you don't get to eat until you feed your animals'. Loads of parents don't teach their kids responsibility, even though kids are fully capable of it if they are properly taught from day one.

      No, I think it's a matter of buying less high-maintenance pets if the ownership goes solely to the child. I think pets can be great responsibility training with supervision, I've had friends that has taken care of cats since elementary school. Of course this is helped by parents who give a shit.

      It's also a good idea to make sure your kids actually want a pet too, my mum just forced animals on me like she did after-school classes without bothering to see if I was interested. When I was 7 I fed two gerbils to our cat because they kept me up at night chewing the bars on their cage. I love animals now but I think handing them to young children willy nilly is irresponsible.

      I was taught respectfor animals at a very young age. I absolutely hated when others abused them...weather a little crab or spider or kitten... Broke my heart

      Not really... it comes down to teaching your child responsibility and care. My son has had his hermit crabs for two years. After this video I will not purchase more for him, but we're giving them great lives. I had pets growing up. All exceeded their life span and were very happy.

    I used to have them as a 7 year old and took them from my beach. I had mine up to 6 years, and so I believe they're well taken care of. They were already old when I got them. I take care of them *very* seriously, did research, etc. I loved them a lot.
