  • I tend not to do videos like this, partly because I generally don't pay attention to the news or mainstream media, and partly because I am very a blunt person with somewhat colourful opinions at times so it's often best to keep my thoughts to myself. But this story about Charlotte Dujardin abusing a horse just kept invading my online spaces, I literally couldn't avoid seeing it. And after watching it I remembered exactly why I no longer work within the equestrian industry. I should point out that not all of my experiences in the industry have been negative, I have worked for and with some genuinely nice people, and have met some very talented horse trainers who never behaved in the ways shown in that video ... but unfortunately I have also met plenty of people who treat their horses (and students... and staff!) like crap!
    I myself have been on a bit of a journey wrestling with this over the years. I'm ashamed to say that in my eagerness to be a 'better rider', I started going down the same road as some of these questionable individuals. Thankfully I finally woke up to it all and stopped perusing training and having lessons with people who's solution to every problem was to 'give it a smack with the stick'.

    I am in your camp, I love my ponies too much to hurt them. We are living in an age, where, we have natural horsemanship to understand how a horse thinks and how it will respond. Why resort to violence to ask them to do what we want? I stopped watching 'professional' horse sports a long time ago. I will start watching when horses tongues stop turning blue with bits, where they are whipped and have them not enjoy what they are doing because of repercussions. They are amazing creatures, and, to truly earn the love of one, is priceless. Unfortunately to some, they are commodities for big earnings or glory. Show me more natural riders in sports, where it is all about the horse. Plus, if us 'normal' equestrians, would just stop all the negativity to one another, what a wonderful life this could be. You are right to speak up about this, and plus nothing beats Nelly and her zoomies up that hill ❤

      I'm the same as you, haven't really watched equestrian sports for years now. It's funny coz people always ask me if I go to Cheltenham races or Badminton and my response is always a complete lack of interest which confuses them. But that kind of thing just doesn't really interest me, it all feels so high pressure and everyone is so serious and it's all big stakes big money. And like you said, it is just about making money for a lot of them .... I wonder how many big name equestrians would keep on riding if they stopped getting paid? 🤔 And I think that's where a lot of the mistrestment comes in. I think people make promises that can't be kept, claim they can get a horse doing x/y/z in 6 weeks and then realise the animal can't do it. And instead of risking their reputation or losing money they start to increase the pressure on the horse to perform, when maybe it isn't even capable of doing what's asked of it.

    What makes me sick is people like Pammy Hutton & Carl pretending like they didn't know it goes on . THEY made me sick to my stomach for acting so innocent.
    Also it's NOT the norm. There are plenty of accomplished riders ( like Boyd Martin for example) that would NEVER do that. True horseman/ women don't do that.
    Yes I've been guilty of it in Showjumping. Once or twice. But never again.
    Also all the big U tubers calling Charlotte a mum/ daughter & we should leave her alone. They make me sick too.

    Your thoughts echo a lot of what I have heard and seen from other select You Tubers I watch in that there's a sense of yeh no surprise it's endemic in the industry to behave like that. I don't have horses but I used to really enjoy watching Equestrian sport but have gradually come to the realisation that that perceived partnership of horse and person is a lot of the time based on abuse and fear. And I think you are right. Its become normalised and it isn't penalised by the governing bodies even when their own rules on welfare are being broken. There's a culture of abuse. So I just watch people like you now who have a partnership with their horses built on respect for another living being. And actually I find it a lot more inspirational to learn how a proper partnership between horse and person can be developed with empathy. So, well said.

      @@keithsimpson2697 so many bad practices have been normalised sadly. It's not everyone though, I think I have been quite unlucky with some of the individuals I've met, but I do think the whole industry needs overhauling and mindsets need to change. Especially within governing bodies!!

    I felt very disappointed too, and was most upset with the person heard laughing. I do wonder why that video emerged when it did though. Why wasn’t it reported at the time of the incident, why wait until the start of the Olympics?. Raises more questions than it answers (-: Marion

    • @raversmead
      @raversmead  2 месяца назад

      @@marionwigzell7334 I asked this too. Apparently it was to do with the rider being under aged at the time this happened. And there were afraid of victim blaming etc. Which I kinda get (There is a statement from the rider's lawyer floating around on the internet now, answering a lot of these questions) I think we can all agree that calling out someone as prestigious as Charlotte takes a lot of guts, and from my personal experience I can say that people aren't usually interested in doing anything about this kind of behaviour, even when people do report these things, so again, I do kinda get it. But on the flip side ... They had a video of it! Most people don't have video evidence of their encounters with this behaviour, so it's always a 'your word against mine' kind of situation. I am still a little baffled as to why, given the video evidence, they didn't just blow it up then and there! 🤷 But perhaps that goes back to the previous points. Who knows.
      As for the video being released when it was ... coincidence? Perhaps. But unlikely in my opinion. I think it was very calculated, and released at a time that would cause the most damage, get the most media coverage, and ensure that Charlotte would be out of the Olympics.
      I must say though, the fact that a lawyer is involved suggests there is a much greater game afoot that none of us are aware of yet! I'm sure it'll all come out in the end.

    I’ve learned I will not trust many people with my horse and personally want to always be present to some degree visiting my horse at least twice a week whenever he is getting ridden. You have to see someone upset with a horse to know how they will treat it when they are upset. I judge them literally by how they treated my horse when my horse was being “bad”. Honestly I think most people are “rough” with their horse… and their dogs. I also don’t need to make the horse do whatever whim I have. I want to work with my horse at the pace they learn at (as with humans) that works best for them and as long as we are taking steps forward I’m happy. I am also comfortable taking a break or switching discipline. Often a teacher would tell me to wack them with a stick, where in fact I was not kicking hard enough or squeezing hard enough because I didn’t want to go as fast as she wanted me to go. She was pushing me hard and I was not asking the horse to go fast. When that same horse was occasionally naughty for me I would simply take my crop and tap the horse on the shoulder and she always corrected and did what I asked. I never ever had to hit her with it even tho I was instructed to give her a pop. I just used it to tap her and it always worked. I agree in schools I went in kids were told to kick hard. Vs hey wait a second the kid is probably scared and not squeezing well enough due to not having the leg strength yet anyway.

    • @raversmead
      @raversmead  2 месяца назад

      That last statement ... 100% agree with this!!! And horses are NOT stupid. If their rider is unbalanced or unsure of themselves, they often will not do anything that might harm their rider. SO MANY HORSES DO THIS! It is the sweetest thing, to watch a horse go from 'dope on a rope' to racehorse, just with a change of rider on its back. They know. And it saddens me that so many instructors push people to nag at the horses to go faster and do more when it's clear that the rider can not handle more. The horse knows this, so why don't we see it too? It's such a strange world to be in

    I couldn’t agree more but I was so shocked to see CDJ in that situation. I genuinely thought she was so much better than that as a person. I’ve recently too heard the rumours that she is rude…. But what she has done to god knows how many horses is beyond fixable. The only saving grace is this is a win for horses. Hopefully expositions like that will make other so called equestrians think twice! But it does go without saying that this and much worse happens in the horsey world and it’s simply unacceptable.
    I always used to be proud to be an equestrian, but I realise I have been naive. Even when like you having questionable (at best) experiences in the horse world, seeing owners and professionals treat their horses like dirt, using equipment to abuse and control, not to communicate be kind with. I always thought that the majority of equestrians only want what is best for their four legged best friends. But it’s simply not true. I now believe wherever there is income/financial gain associated with an animal the abuse will always be there. I am a lover of thoroughbreds and rehoming them but the racing industry is so hard on them from so young and nothing is done about it. I think the horse world is well overdue a lot of changes and for horse welfare to be more important than money, for once!
