  • My first assignment as a travel NP was to Prince of Wales Island in beautiful Southeast Alaska. Probably one of the most remote places I've ever visited. This video documents my experience working as a travel nurse practitioner in remote Alaska. If you've ever considered working in Alaska, have a look! Comment below and let me know what you think! Thanks for stopping by!

    AK resident here 🙌🏼 born and raised. Have loved watching your videos in regards to the career path itself and your thoughts, as I’m currently an Aspiring nurse practitioner with hopes of specialty care in geriatric memory care. In Alaska this is a high concern, especially those in remote areas where access is limited and providers in this area are slim. Taking more into consideration after watching your recent videos regarding the field. Do you think Alaska could have the same effects as you’ve mentioned in the DWF area ? Thanks for the great content !

    I currently live in Anchorage and work in the PICU at ANMC. We get patients medevac'd to us from all over the state: Nome, Kotz, Bethel, Barrow, Dillingham to name a few. We get A LOT of respiratory kids. We also get traumas, kids on snow machines or four wheelers not wearing a helmet. Occasionally we'll transfer to Seattle Children's, but it's pretty rare. There are some surgical specialties for peds that aren't available in Anchorage, like a complicated cardiac or neuro case for example. We don't run ECMO, but that's is coming soon. We commonly have kids intubated on the vent, or ocsillator.
    Alaska is a great place to live and work in nursing/medicine. Our travel nurses usually love it so much they extend a couple of times before moving on. We've had a couple stay as long as a year. I'm actually looking at applying to NP school and was wondering what specialty would best be suited for traveling? Thanks!

      @DavidWarrenNP  5 лет назад +1

      I love that! How cool! I started my career in the peds ED- so kiddos hold a special place with me.
      I’ve transferred tons of patients down to ANMC while working in Alaska. Funny though, I’ve never been to Anchorage! Would love to visit sometime. Thanks for checking out my channel!

      What specialty do recommend for traveling as an NP? I guess working in remote Alaska requires a much different skill set than traveling elsewhere. I’m currently looking at options to get back to school. Thanks! You really do need to come visit this area of Alaska sometime! Pretty amazing here!

I can attest for sure, there's not hardly a chance I will ever work a full time job again. Having complete control of my schedule, time, freedom, and making a business out of it was the best decision I ever made.

    How is EMS for helping out? I work solo coverage in ND. We do have a true ED with CT and a small inpatient area but its just me and an RN. Nothing like this but still kinda scary. Our EMS is good about hanging around for codes and traumas to lend a hand.

      Hey~ thanks for watching! This was one of my first videos I ever posted haha. So to answer your question- EMS will hang around to help out, especially if there is a critical situation. As you well know, it's always nice to have an extra set of hands in rural area emergencies.

    Did you travel as an RN as well? I'm currently a RN in the ER and I want to travel nurse, but I'm in the MSN-FNP program online with a post-grad certification plan for Acute care so I can still do ER. I don't have the ENP option at my college, and I didn't want to switch colleges right away. My end goal is to travel NP, but I'm not for sure if I should try to travel RN while doing my online classes to get experience? Especially when clinicals start, I don' t think it would be feasible to travel RN... any suggestions?
