- Dakota Williams was lying on her bed in her basement rental apartment when something suspicious caught her eye. The 23-year-old said, “I noticed there were actually two smoke detectors in the room. I started to kind of fidget with it and my stomach dropped, my heart sank.” She found that the smoke detector above her bed wasn’t a smoke detector at all. It was a hidden camera. Inside Edition’s Lisa Guerrero reports.

The fact men like this take women off the market for the rest of us. I saw one of the people who bullied me in September at a bar with a girl that wasn't his girlfriend of 3+ years. Situations like that take 2 good women off the market.

It disgusts me that this guy is only getting community service, which is basically a slap on the wrist. He thinks that he can get off easy because of his rank in power. No job should make you feel like you're above the law. I feel like he should demoted, or at the very least court-martialed.

The judge only gave him community service. There was no justice served. The judge is just as bad as this guy for not doing his job. The judge should be removed from his position and the guy should have gone to prison.

This has been a huge problem ever since they micronized the cameras. Be cautious in hotels, airbnbs, public restrooms, and even contractors that come into your homes for repairs. Anyone can put a spy camera in your home.
There was one story I saw some years ago, a couple found a hidden camera in their bedroom, and the culprit turned out to be their neighbor who they were close with.

My manager put 2 diff smoke detectors in each of my rooms and I've thought that was strange too when he came back and said we also have to install these carbon detectors too or something like that I cover mines with hats and for the ones facing my bed I took them down when he put them up
Actually insurance companies do require the owner to install a carbon monoxide detector as well. If you want to make sure it's not a spy camera just ask a friend to check it for you if you're not familiar with taking it out of the wall/ceiling.

@@Applep1esandfrenchfr1es you should have a smoke detector in every room besides the bathrooms. But it can't hurt to check, shine a flashlight in the detectors and look for a reflection that a lense would give back, then investigate if you don't feel sure.
This is pretty disturbing bc my rental property just (unannounced) installed 2 more smoke alarms in residents bedrooms when we already had 2 installed in the apartments! I've asked if there was an increase in fires or if it was discussed with the community for thoughts/ approval and the answers were no. I saw that they're smart/wifi capable and just wondr but why do we need all that? Especially with so many budget cuts happening.

That poor girl! Nothing happened to me, but yet every time I’m in a place where I am going to be changing and sleeping in like a hotel, or a friends house or a motel. Any kind of place that you would stay at, I always check every nook and cranny throughout the whole house to make sure that there’s no hidden cameras just because I’m paranoid and suspicious of everybody. I bet this chick will be doing the same thing the rest of her life. Damn…….😅

WOW! Violation of Privacy is the #1 tenant complaint. If this leads to tenants generally distrusting their detectors, rental housing just became a whole lot less safe.

I always have a funny feeling about smoke detectors and mirrors.i check them, even when my house was being reconstructed.

Flash your phone light up at it. If something reflects, it's the camera lens reflecting the light.

A camera lens in a fake one will reflect a flashlight. The reflection will come off as purple or blue. And you want the room to be as dark as possible before shining the light.
And yeah you can take detectors apart just to be sure.
Some will say on the back, that it’s not a smoke detector and that is just used for video purposes

Makes you think twice about staying in an air B&B…I bet thousands of them have spy cameras in areas they shouldn’t be, and I bet a lot of that footage is shared or sold online. I’m old, overweight and wrinkled now, so most would be grossed out by my naked body 😂 but it’s very concerning about how much footage is probably taken of young children, and that thought makes me sick. I urge everyone I know, who rents private short term accommodation, to at least search the rooms and bathrooms their children use, all the light fittings, mirrors, electrical outlets, smoke detectors etc. You can’t trust anyone these days, not with the technology available now.
You make a good point. I was always suspicious of AirBnB's. They may be more conducive, but I'll keep taking my chances with hotels. Just sad the world we live in.

I've suspected that about fire alarms for about a decade now. Good to know to check those when staying in unfamiliar places. It was also good on her instincts to check those two alarms--that is incredibly suspicious, as it's only required to have one per bedroom, even if there is an attached bathroom. She did the smart thing by listening to herself and investigating. It sucks if he has visuals of her hidden somewhere. Unfortunately, more than her have had that happen, and it sucks that it does; it's incredibly violating. I hope it never comes back to harm her. I'm glad she's safe for now, but it's horrible that even happened.
