  • I am now a tinsel expert ! This is my journey on figuring out how to use this tinsel inspired by images of old fashioned christmas trees on Pinterest. It is called Lametta tinsel, but also sometimes referred to as icicles, foil tinsel, lead tinsel or draped tinsel. I ended up using 20 sheets of tinsel on my 6ft christmas tree and honestly, I would have kept adding more if I didn't run out of tinsel!

My grandmother has a box of REAL silver tinsel from the 1920s. She’s 86 and it was her mother’s. She’s used it annually on the tree in her home for 65 years. Each single strand goes on one by one. And each single strand goes back in the box one by one. Every Christmas. For 65 Years. The result is _STUNNING_ but oh dear sweet God …

This brought back so MANY memories. My mother thought a tre wasn't complete without icicles. She was METICULOUS about how she put them on. She had a technique to putting them on. I will admit it brought the tree to life with a beautiful glow, but it was such a pain to keep them on the tree. Also, we always put them on last.

I have been wanting to do an icicle themed Christmas tree or something different and this is simply beautiful!! It's a breath of fresh air compared to how everyone is doing the overly done same trees. They are pretty but yes starting to get boring.. I think you just brought back an old trend that people will start doing again.

I'm glad youtube suggested this video, I think your tree looks great 👍 I only find pictures of trees like this already made up so I really enjoyed watching the process. I have a small tree Im going to do this to. Thank you for sharing and the inspiration.

I'm a senior. We had real metal tinsel we used years after year. We took about 6 strands, folded onto a hook. The trick to the beauty is having it hang straight and have REAL tinsel

Mom decorated from the bottom up . She would use 2 strands per limb. And we kids helped she made sure we did the edges of the libs. 2 strands only. . Tinsel was the last thing to go on the tree.

My mom would use tinsel after she has decorated the tree with lights, ornaments and garland. It would be her finishing touch. She didn’t do one strand at a time. She would take several (about 6 or ten) and drape the bunch on the top end of each branch and it looked amazing. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood 🎉

in America, this tinsel comes, or used to come in boxes of like 150 or more individual pieces, not strips or clumps, per box. i havent used it in years, but i have always liked it when its done well. when using this type of tinsel, start at the bottom, making sure you use enough, and work your way up the tree. when using any kind of hanging decor like this or long ornaments, always start at the bottom and work your way up. that way the tinsel or ornaments on the upper part will not get in the way of decorating the bottom. i used to decorate trees for a living and you live and learn !!!!!!

WELL DONE YOU Tinsel Expert! Never having exposure to tinsel you did a SMASHING job. I think you broke the tinsel code-stroke the tip of the branch and pull inward. PS. PLEASE make a short, reel of your discovery. It is that epic and will be traffic generating-viral.
My understanding is: The reason it went out of vogue is it was actually METAL. We didn't have mylar then. People would discard their live tree without removing the tinsel on the curb for the trash collection. It became a nightmare for the environment. Wildlife would swallow it and as you can imagine that metal balls up fills up tummies and no space for food as it never passes.
In my home only skilled installers were permitted to attach it to the tree. IE: my older brother. I still have issues over that. He got to touch everything delicate and valuable, and I could only watch. "you are a girl and you aren't old enough". Arrrggggh. FUN fact: many would just stand back and TOSS the tinsel in the air, allow it to land come what may.😮(SHOCKING isn't it?) XO

I love the way Lametta looks on Christmas trees. It's strange, I grew up throughout the late 70's, 80's, and 90's, but I don't remember ever seeing Lametta.
The first time I remember seeing it was just a few weeks ago when I was looking for old photos of Christmas trees in the 80's on Google, and saw loads of trees covered in it, I think mainly it was an American thing?
So when looking on ebay and Amazon I was really surprised at how much of it is being sold over here in the UK right now, as though it's as popular as regular tinsel.
I'm going to get some but I've got no idea of how many packets I should buy, and what length to go for.
Great tips on how to put it on the branches, thanks!

In NZ, they grow and sell bushy pine trees for xmas trees which I have never liked, whereas in Europe and America they have lovely shapely fir trees which shows off the tinsel to good effect. I've noticed lately that the artificial trees they now sell here are looking more like fir trees which I might invest in because I like tinsel on a tree too. I've tried twice in my lifetime to decorate a tree with tinsel but failed to get the desired effect so gave up on the idea. After watching a video of xmas trees in the 50's with tinsel and your video and comments, has made me realise that it is a bit of an art-form. You've inspired me to give it another crack. May I wish you a merry Christmas. Cheers!

If you have pets, I don’t recommend, putting tinsel on your tree, because they will eat it. My dog Did 🤷🏻‍♀️

My new Christmas tree theme is ugly Christmas tree. The uglier the better. I hate how people like to show off with their Christmas tree. Everyone posting them on FB IG and they host parties to show them off and how women judge you for how cheap your tree is or if you use plastic ornaments etc. pathetic

I miss doing the tinsel on the tree. It was the on every tree growing up. We started off with the heavier metal tinsel and were so thrilled when the lighter tinsel hit the market. We added the lights and ornaments to our live tree, then at last we added the tinsel. I keep wondering if I could add tinsel again and thought I might try the curtain tinsel used for backdrops, tucking the end up under my tree topper and draping the long strands down the tree. Sadly, the strands on the curtains appear to be fairly wide and I don't think it will offer the same appearance. In the past, we pretty much left the tinsel on the trees and stacks of tinsel covered nearly needless trees would pile up to be hauled off or farmers would burn them in their back yards. We would see tinsel strands in bird nests and tinsel was often carried off by the wind. Thinking back, I'm not sure this was good for our planet. So I did a little research and came up with this (hope it helps): www.dailysabah.com/life/environment/forgo-tinsel-on-your-christmas-tree-if-you-want-to-be-green

I admire anyone who has the patience to add tinsel and the fortitude to remove every strand. It was backbreaking work when I was young.

I have done another video about taking down the tinsel, I saved almost all of it so I can reuse it for future years and it’s not so wasteful 😊
