A lot of praise for the boys in Asia and Keith Emerson - quite rightly - but let us not forget we wouldn't have this wonderful piece of music without Aaron Copland.
If I had listend just to Carl Palmer's drumming, this piece would have been worth my money. What a fantastic drummer!

Steve Howe is often very "in his own world", not really showing much emotion on stage, but here he is clearly loving it and you can even see him smiling. He rocks it - good to see him driving his guitar nicely and attacking it. Great guitarist and a bit different to most of his contemporaries. Nice! Carl's fills at the end are totally cool. Nailed it.

No por nada esta banda fue conformada por lo más "granado" del prog setentero: John Wetton (King Crimson), Steve Howe (Yes), Geoff Downes (Yes) y Carl Palmer (ELP). Curiosamente esta versión del tema se asemeja a varias de las versiones en vivo que tocó ELP por el hecho de que era en términos generales más una "jam session" que una interpretación del tema como tal (y en ambos casos, lo que más hubo fueron "salidas de libreto").

When you hear Downes on the keyboards you realize just how brilliant Keith Emerson was.
And Rick Wakeman, he must have been busy with his own gigs when this was scheduled. 😅
Not to say Downes isn’t in the same league as these guys, but there’s a reason why Wakeman could book a concert with his own band, in various places around the world, (including Cuba), and produce live albums, with excellent performances from them. After all, Bowie chose Rick to play piano for the recording of ‘Life on Mars,’ and that’s just one of Wakeman’s earlier credits.
Downs not even in the same. League as Wakeman or Emerson. My God I played better keyboards when I was 16

Some parts are difficult to play, and jams like this are needed to check if a band works, but musically, it's on the level of an etude = nothing much.

Greg did some electric guitar as well with ELP. First tune on first album and Karn Evil 9 I think.
When putting the band together, Keith wanted to have Jimi endrix in the band but that never happened.
Geoff Downes plays the intro solo in PLAYBACK! The following fanfare with the band is in another tune! But the arrangement is excellent!

This is better than several live versions from ELP I know of.
To me, many ELP live versions suffer from Mr. Emerson rushing to quick over the keyboard. He seems forgetting speed has not necessarily something to do with virtuoso music.

I have to agree, though I kind of was grossed about the way you explained it. But you're right, when they dropped the music in the beginning, you wanted the rest, not this new much less classy rendition.

Yes, this was the original line up. I saw them on their first tour in 1982.

Wakeman was part of a project that contributed to the creation of Asia, but he was never a member.

Powerfactorguy I don't know how exact that is. I know at one point Wakeman, Palmer and Wetton were tossed around as forming a group but I have never heard how serious that was. I do know Howe and Wetton was the original members of Asia. Palmer was pulled in and Howe recommended Geoff Downes after doing the Yes Drama album. Travor Rabin was auditioned as a second singer and guitarist. There is a version of him singing Asia's Only Time Will Tell with Wetton singing backing vocals. It is obvious he doesn't fit the material and they decided to remain a 4 piece.
Steve Nelson I know it was BRUFORD, Wakeman, and Wetton who got together--Beelzebub from Bruford's debut was one result.

It is a good version with the great John Wetton on bass (what a nice solo!) but Downes' sounds are f-in Roland shit! Can't the dude get some decent synth and organ sounds?
