Some tracks in wii games are sequenced. That's because these tracks are (in most of the cases ) adaptive music, that means that the music changes based on the situation. In particular, in Mario Galaxy the Slider theme, the Star ball music, the gliding and surfing minigames and even some bossfights (like King Kaliente) the music can go faster or slower, or even "add" new layers when you perform some actions (in King Kaliente battle, when you hit him orchestra hits are played in tune with the music). Many other games do this, from older games (ocarina of time, wind waker, dk jungle beat...) to newer games (even in zelda botw the battle music is adaptive, adding piano flourishes when you hit the enemy)
Is there a video or an article out there showcasing the evolution of sequenced and streamed music on Nintendo consoles? That would be awesome. I know nothing about this subject but it sounds fascinating.
I'm not familiar with the Zeldas or DK but I can add that in Xenoblade 3 (and, IIRC, modern Fire Emblem) there's a bunch of adaptive music, such as one track transitioning into the equivalent section of a remixed version of the same track when battle initiates, and back again when battle concludes. In XC3's case, though, it's not done with sequencing AFAIK - instead, the music engine actually transitions from one music file to another. (I don't know about how FE implements it.)
@@Pikmaniac_le_vrai Scruffy makes some phenomenal videos about nintendo music, not exactly an evolution video but lots of creative things like sound effects and other things
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat also uses the same exact adaptive music similarly to Super Mario Galaxy, In boss fights (such as an Hog or Tusk) or even Performing an combo the music "add" new layers when Donkey Kong performs some actions (In a Hog, Roc or Tusk battles and even the final boss when they're stunned, synth notes are played along the music, if Cactus / Ghastly King Health is low, an crowd cheering "DK!" can be heard in the music).

Mario Galaxy 2 feels like a fever dream. I remember as a kid seeing a lot of fake Mario 64 sequel videos and thinking this was the same. But then I got it and thought it was super fun and really hard. This song was one that caught me off guard hearing it for the first time but damn, what a throwback (galaxy). Sadly no whistle.
When I was playing Mario Galaxy, I naturally thought all the songs were orchestral recordings. Considering the game's interactive music system, it is only natural that the songs are made with a midi-like system, but it is amazing that they do not sound out of place when listened to with other orchestral recordings.
These deconstructions always make me better appreciate the thought that went into making these songs sound the way they do. Thanks for doing such cool stuff like this for us!
now i really wanna see some barn-band perform their usual hits until suddenly for their next song the banjo player just starts absolutely fucking shredding like in the third chapter, miscieviously looking around through the crowd, and after a while, with a loud "HEY" (or "HAY" if you may), the rest of the group joins in

Even modern Nintendo games still tend to use sequenced tracks here and there. Plenty of examples on the 3DS, and even the Wii U and Switch in some cases (example: _Super Mario 3D World_ -- both the original _and_ the port)
Oh boy, this opens the door for so many songs! I assumed the all theme that sped up and slowed down accordingly was still a recording, but it's been a while since I heard it
Yes! You made it! Now I hope you can do Kirby Return to Dreamland! If it's not possible, I want you to know that : some music from the final version of the game have beta versions in the files. These bêta music were originally planned for Kirby GCN but he never came out and became Kirby Wii. So maybe you can deconstruct these, idk.
Hey there, I don’t know if you’ll do more deconstructing music from Wii games, but do you think it’s possible if you can do the Hammer event music from the first Mario and Sonic game?
@@mariomaniac581 So, some songs, such as the Slider theme, are sequenced, in that they're basically instructions, kind of like sheet music, with instruments, saved separately, assigned to each. It saves a lot of space. It's also easily modifiable - tempo of the stage or sound effects or taking damage can alter the sequence instructions if set up to do so, so some games, despite bigger file space, will make use of the technique still. Most music in Galaxy/2 however is streamed - sort of like just an mp3 in the game that's playing back. You can't really break apart the separate instruments or instructions or mute anything or rip the soundfont because it's all one file that's playing, especially when it's a recording (like orchestra stuff). So some songs you can make these breakdown videos on, but a lot of them in newer games cannot.
I hate to ask in a RUclips comment section but I am SO desperate lmao. Could you please provide me with the Galaxy1/2 midi and soundfonts you have? I've tried absolutely everything and cannot get any sound information out, just sequence information (albeit in the wrong format) Would really appreciate it.
So for this one, were the instruments used in the original song all found, or is there a special file type that some Wii tracks used that can be deconstructed?
@@SmaIlHumyeah there’s some sequenced tracks on there too, but it also doesn’t matter if the instrument quality is basically the same as cd quality. They use sequenced music in order to make things like syncing the music to a certain scene or changing tempos easier.
