@@fallenarchangel7317 let's keep it totally real: they both influenced each other and had their own signature styles but Madlib's influence on J Dilla made him make Donuts. it's very evident. i'm sure if Jay Dee was still here today it would b different but Madlib's discography to date is so prolific, varied, & vast-- it screams legendary and that's what makes him #1 in my book
I don't think it's that mysterious. He's dropped enough hints in interviews to get the gist of it. He says he digs for records and chooses based off intuition. Brings em home, listens, finds a vibe, samples and chops it up, and maybe overdub some live instruments. He's also said multiple times that he primarily is making music that he wants to hear, and if other people like it, then cool. Basically, his process is trusting his intuition, his instincts, and his curiosity. He also says he's a student of the Music, so he knows his history, and digs deeper into the records and the artist than most would probably care to. He understands that what he's doing is part of a bigger continuum. It's about a pure Love for Music, and keeping it alive. It's not about being a rockstar.
