My personal story: As a teenager, I spent my time digging through old records in search of samples to make beats, only to end up, as an adult, preferring jazz, funk, soul, world music, prog rock, and even classical music over hip-hop lol. Beat-making turned me into a music lover.
Back in my case, making beats as a teenager in the ’90s straight up led me to learning piano and guitar so I could play the music I was hearing on those old records I used to sample. For almost 10 years, I wasn’t making beats at all-just instrumental music. It’s only been a few years since I got back into messing with an MPC, probably out of nostalgia. But I gotta admit, I’m way better on the piano than I am at chopping samples. Back then it was just a loop and a beat; now the techniques have evolved, and I’m out of practice. I’d rather spend my time hunting down complex chords on the guitar. Lol.
When you’re listening and you hear a sample. And then you make a beat with it and you love it. Precious moments. After years of doing it, you listen to the sample and the beats composes itself in your mind. It’s an incredible feeling that makes you feel rich inside. People like Alchemist operate at that level all the time.
This is so helpful. Tons of videos out there showing the "beat making" process, but not enough about the listening process. Thank you for this absolute gem of inspiration.
That's the part of beatmaking I'm most eager to share with people on my channel, my process of finding and flipping samples. Glad to know that people appreciate that part!
As an old school B-Boy 5:48 is sweet nectar to my ears. And as a massive soul music head the tune that starts at 6:04 is soul fulfilling. My massive record collection is full of gems and a samplers paradise. I've been a crate digger for decades, loved watch this. Big respect, peace and love!
Oh man, thats whats up! I could get lost in there for days! So cool to see the process in action, Alchemist makes so many dope beats! And ya'll are so correct you can own an album for years and then listen through again a find so much you had not heard years prior. Facts! Keep diggin' in them creates fellas!

This joint is a sample oasis. Every album got super rare gems. It aint even fair. These bammas inside a old 80's apartment building in cuba somewhere. This spot dont even show up on google earth. Blessings!!!!!
i prefer dolo digging missions but digging with Al in whatever part of the world he’s in would be dope, although i’d still be in my own little corner minding my business looking for heat myself. dope vid.
so if im trying to go for this type of vibe at the record store , what year or genre would i go for to hear this ... the dark guitar/ mellow/ yet smooth flow ?? i usually go for jazz 1970s vinyle and sometimes jappanese jazz/1970s
I found out that it might be Sayuri Nonaka, but I didn't manage to find which one it is from her and also it's not really available on youtube or spotify. It seems to be available on some japanese websites that does not accept people outside of Japan to visit the website.
Ĺets Make digging popular again that 90s and 2000s vibe can come back all it takes is passion and drive for what one does . Hip hop and good music is always ready to be made and discovered
With stem separation now available do you guys still look for open notes grooves ect or does that change how you dig now? For me so much stuff I wanted to use but was too cluttered sonically is now usable material.
Record shopping in the early 2010’s was cheap as hell. I had a spot that I could get records from that had crates and crates and crates of gems for only a dollar a piece. That was around 11-12. Went back one day around winter 2014 and used records were $20-25 a piece. That’s when I knew the spot had been blown up
I think the track at 13:00 minutes got sampled for one of the beats off that Mike x Wiki project. I'll look up the name later and edit my comment if I figure out for sure
I’m a licensed psychologist and I officially declare this video to be better than therapy

Me too I think this is the common journey of all diggers even tough we can dig in our brain now that we have a real knowledge
i know i feel like a lotof producers dont listen to any hip hop; at least i know i dont lol not on the daily at least
Beats and hip hop are a gateway music to more music.

hip hop is still my favorite cus the open structure allows you to put all of those together more cohesively than you can with any other genre

The art of listening.
with all due respect, at a certain point you need to follow your heart, you shouldn't need tips on listening lol
this needs to be a series.
I would just like to have a homie to go digging with in general…
I would, but the chances are unlikely.
Ever in bismarck North Dakota,we have tons of untapped resources up here. Dont tell no one though
who wouldn't
homie? slows you down and the homie rips off your jams. always go solo into the wild unless it's a guy that contracted you to find beats for his flow
