I hade other plans for this week but a nasty accident prevented me from doing what I had planned. I rarely cut myself with knives but when I do, I make sure it counts ;) This time I didn't exactly cut myself. I stabbed the palm of my right hand with my Mora classic No1. How the hell did I do that? Well, it slipped a little as I was trying to put it back in the sheath and my reflexes were faster than rational though. Obviously. That's what reflexes are for - to be fast. This time, however, it didn't work very well, as I went for a falling knife. If that wasn't enough, the butt of the knife got stuck in my jumper and the knife turned tip up as I was swatting it.
Long story short, severed something in my right hand (most likely just a muscle) and ended up a bit crippled as I'm right handed. That left me useless with knives for some time and the only thing I could shoot this week was an overview of part of my Mora collection.
Here we have Mora 731 high carbon, 711, a single edged crooked knife, Mora 106, Classic No1, No2, The new Mora Robust Pro, Old Mora High Q Robust, Mora Flex Knife, Companion Stainless Black, Q 511 and Companion Serrated or diving knife, which BTW is in very High Vis orange.
Why do I have so many of those knives? First of all, they'e good. Not just for the price. Many, much more expensive knives don't stand a chance agains Moras. Second, they are very inexpensive. I like that combination.
So here's what Morakniv of Sweden have to say about their products and company.
"Mora of Sweden was formed in 2005 through the merger of Frosts Knivfabrik and KJ Eriksson. The name reflects the important link between our products, the town of Mora and its Swedish origin. A Morakniv (Mora knife) is always a knife from Mora of Sweden. The company is still family-owned and developes and manufactures knives which are delivered to all parts of the world."
I recommend the Mora 2000 too. Yes; there were several knifemanufacturers in the village of Östnor (my mothers birthvillage, Selja, is just across the Österdal-river btw) back in the 18-hundreds, but in the later 19-hundreds there was only KJ Eriksson and Frost. They merged into the Mora of Sweden brand some years ago.
Tomas Sandberg Thanks for the info and for watching.
Bardzo fajnie, że są napisy po Polsku. Czegoś takiego szukałem. Leci Sub.
That a fine collection Szymon. I spent my afternoon with a stump full of Moras and a piece of cedar.
I hope your hand heals soon!
Congratulations on all the new subscribers!
Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors That cedar... It's something special. Thanks. I really appreciate you watching.
Fantastic Video Simon. Really Good & Cool Knives. Keep up the great work. Nick.
+Nicholas Aarons (Nick Mini) Thanks. I'll do my best :)
The orange serrated one from the older Clipper series (preceding the series designated 'Companion', as in your example?) is billed as a 'Rescue' knife, though having a regular Mora point, not a blunted one. I just got one despite their getting scarce since being discontinued. Mine is the Clipper 861F Rescue knife; for these uses -- kayaking, and sailing, maybe... + food prep, bread knife wielding, & miscellaneous, obviously useful for line cutting. There's slightly over 1-1/2 inches of non-serrated edge on mine, enough to be more broadly useful as an EDC knife complement in my daily pack or messenger bag.
This one beats the current offerings in having the thinner circa 2 mm blade stock -- more slicey, less woodsy; which is what I needed.
Thanks for the helpful, though painful, video survey + tips.
Nice collection of Mora's Simon. Hope your hand heels up quick
Gary Lawson Thank you. I hope so too. I hate being immobilised like that.
a lot of times for utility, the serrated edge is used to cut rope more efficiently or when you need to bite into something instead of using pressure to force the cut(like a fruit or tomato).
I love the HQ robust and am so glad I found one before they disappear forever. I thought I liked the new one better but after getting used to the HQ it's awesome.
I ended up melting my New Robust sheath and bending it in just enough that the finger guard catches the inside better, it works great.
That's a good idea with the sheath.
Can you do a review on the Mora Bushcraft series knives?
The Mora Companion fully serrated is for cutting rope. Its intended for marine life as far as I know. And its good to use to cut shavings of off fatwood. A tak apropo fajny filmik. :)
+jakubatube Dzięki :)
cheers mate great recipe simple pure as it should be
doug bulldog Thanks. Glad you liked it :)
Hey Simon, just came across your channel, very nice. Hope you get better and fully function with your hand, better luck next time. where do you live in Poland?
Hi. Thank you. Yes, I almost completely recovered, given the time ;) I don't live in Poland nor England anymore though.
I've gotta 30+ yr ole GI issue companion only other one I desire is the Original 2 looks so well made other than that big fan 4ever just abt good video very informative TY
serrations are good for cutting fabrics and ropes. I think they may be good for cutting sinew that might dull a razor when dressing game.
Paloma Monteleone That's what I've been told. I will test this myself soon. Thanks for watching.
This isn't my own idea (saw on you tube Cliff Stamp??? I think) but, the serrated blades work well for slicing soft vegetables and fruits like tomatoes without having to be kept razor sharp. So it should make a good companion to a regular knife for food prep in the kitchen or for camping.
John Madden I'll have to try it then. Thanks :)
Hey Simon I figured out a better way to fix those Pro sheaths, I bought the new 511 green and the sheath was horrible the knife just falls out. I ended up boiling the sheath on high for 5 minutes, take it out and use a wet towel under cold water and press it inward not super hard. Anyways it now locks in with a nice click, its the best way IMO to fix the issue.
Thanks. I didn't realize bending that plastic would be so easy. It may have to be done to any Mora sheath, new or old, after some time as they're inevitably gonna get looser over time.
Simon's Discoveries Yep true, try out the Cold Steel Finn Hawk fixed blade Puukko knife. I think you would like it, its a great knife for $20, the sheath is crazy tight a perfect neck knife.
I think I've seen it somewher but decided I had too many knives anyway :)
That serrated blade is useful for people who need to cut ropes often or in emergencies.
Simon. I just batoned a brand new stainless companion through seasoned cherry about wrist thick. Did a one stick fire with it so there was batoning and carving. It suffered absolutely zero damage even with the knots throughout the wood. I'd say you may have gotten a bad heat treat on your stainless. Contact mora. I'm sure they'll send you a new knife
It's probably a bit too late now as it's been about two years since I bought it. It takes batoning like a champ. It's the heavy carving that damages it. But it's ok for pretty much everything else. Thanks.
That may be true however they do offer a lifetime warranty. And from what I heard they do cover heavy out door use on all their companions, companion HD, and bushcraft series models. Might be a good topic for a video- testing out the mora warranty and posting your thoughts and opinions.
Best regards.
E
Erick Ohmstede I did not expect a $15 knife to be covered by a lifetime warranty LOL That's awesome. Thanks.
Yep. I was shocked too when I heard that but have since confirmed it through the mora website.
Same here. I have (or had, I just keep losing them) several Moras in Stainless Steel (Sandvik 12C27), never had a single problem with them. In fact, I feel like they hold up better to batoning than the Carbon Steel ones.
try using the serrated knife for feather sticks. also you can use it to cut your steak
+dragon3831 Cutting steaks is probably a better idea. No control when feathersticking. I know you can make a lot of accidental curls but that's now my style :) Thanks for watching.
yellow mora (serated) is for cutting rope.
Frank Furt That's what they say but I bet it can be useful in other 'departments' as well. Thanks for watching.
I like that even though you were injured, you still wanted to fiddle with your knives. I also found the flex knife to be a nice surprise. It's unfortunate that your stainless companion seems to have a bad edge temper. I've got a couple of those, as well as the Top Q Allround, which is pretty much the same. After numerous trysticks, firestarting, wood carving & batonning, they have given me nothing but exceptional performance. I've drilled holes through everything from fresh pine & cedar to seasoned oak, with no issues. In comparison to a stainless Hultafors, which did fold & chip. I hope your viewers aren't discouraged from trying the stainless Moras. Thanks very much.
redpanda1971 Thanks. Yeah, I just told myself it was my fault and not the knife's :) I had another stainless mora that broke but that was after a torture test so that might be the reason. However, the stainless hultafors received the same amount of abuse and I still have it. It's still fine :)
Thanks for watching.
Simon's Discoveries That's a shame about your experience with the stainless Mora. Now you have a decent loaner knife, at least.
Would you consider making a video, using the flex knife on a fish? I have a bad habit of buying multiples of knives I like, so I have 3 flex knives. It replaced my stainless Opinel#6, as my fruit knife in my lunch bag. Another one is in my kitchen, with the paring knives. I'm now thinking that the last one will be thrown in my tackle box, thanks to you. Cheers.
redpanda1971 Yes, I was going to shoot something like that at some point. But it'll have to wait since I'm in Poland now and the knife's in England :)
Simon's Discoveries Are there any Polish companies like Mora/Hultafors? In Canada, the closest we have, is Grohmann.
redpanda1971 Hm... Not really. Although... There is Gerlach - a very old cutlery company. They do all sorts of knives and I'm sure almost every one here has at least one of their knives. Sometimes not even knowing it.
I have a bushcraft orange with the same issue as your companion. Having several mora knives with stainless and the hardness vary. Mora doesnt keep this a secret but I do believe that blades that are too soft slip through their qc from time to time. Get another companion and youll most likely understand what I mean.
where in uk do u camp and practice usually?
I don't live in the UK anymore. This was shot at Camley Street Natural Park in London.
OK :)
Hello mate, I think the orange knife is a rescue knife, built to cut rope, leather, clothes netting that sort of thing, a serrated knife will cut rope far better than a plain edge, nice collection by the way.
joeboxer216 Thanks. I thought it might be for that too. The problem is, it's a bit too pointy for me. I probably wouldn't wanna play around my chest with a point like that. Especially when all shaken up and in a hurry ;) But yeah, it'll probably be good for cutting rope and such.
Hi! I am a Pole and i am curious why you say in Poland you have the greatest time outdoors. The nature in England is similar and also interesting I guess. Best regards :-)
Hi. Well, I have different experiences with what's left of nature in England. Maybe it's just my high expectations ;)
super knives.
+SURVIVE IN NORWAY They are. Thanks :)
The Orange serrated one is specifically for rope. meant for boatmen and fishermen
DoctorGibbon I've heard some people use it while diving too. Rope cutting seems like the most likely intended purpose.
Did you healed?
+Weta In a way I did. But the dexterity in my right index finger is slightly limited.
The serrated knife is for search and rescue when cutting rope.
HI SIMON. PLEASE LET ME IF IT WORKS. I HAVE A KNIFE ITS A FISHER MAN IT HAS A SIMILAR BLADE.
+Lynn West Sure. I'll let you know how it works for me. Thanks.
I like that flex knife
Joshuah Moran Me too. It's good for filleting fish. In fact, it's the best of all knives I've used for this task.
Sporo tych "Morek". Też mam kilka. Ciężko z numerami. Robust wiadomo. Dostajemy takie do pracy. W rękawicy dodatkowo, to jeszcze ciężej działać.
Bizon MG Jak czerwona rękojeść, to powinna być węglówka. Chyba, że taka bardziej pomarańczowa? Pacnij ją kilka razy ostrym krzemieniem. Jak iskrzy, to węglowa. Ta niebieska, to na pewno nierdzewka. Złamała mi się taka podczas testowania i porównania węglowych z nierdzewnymi.
Simon's Discoveries Wykopałem z szafy i sprawdziłem. I czerwona i granatowa to stainless steel.
Mój adres to bizion@op.pl Jak coś to daj namiar, odeślę zdjęcia. Albo daj znać gdzie tu mogę wrzucić te zdjęcia, bo noga jestem w tych sprawach :)
Simon's Discoveries Pracuję w kopalni ZG "Rudna" w Polkowicach k. Lubina (w którym mieszkam :-) )
Say Heah and Happy New Years, I got a Mora, it's thicker and a nice rounded spine, it has a hand gaurd and a Curly Birch handle, but the pommel is covered with a metal, the sheath is leather and nice quality, and has a metal trim, there is a crown and a big "A" with Mora typed across the "A is centered, I heard it was a army issue, do you know any info on it, please lemme know.
+paulie 4x Sounds very unusual. I'm afraid, I've never come across a Mora Knife like that. But it seems like a very nice piece. Unless it's something like this
www.moraofsweden.se/20.0.0.0/771/cache/771_b0181806f23c7345c71c336d0f0031f7.jpg
In that case I could tell you what it is :)
It's a little similar, but mine looks alittle better made, and on the pommel instead of wood it's got a metal and the sheath as a metal trim , But Thank You
chesch hello there I have just found your channel. Haw long have you been recording for youtube.
Hi. Oh, I'm not sure. I've been casually uploading videos for years.
I put clear fingernail polish between the bolster and the blade , which seals the opening ! A lacquer !
Sounds like a good idea.
Yes Frost merged with Mora Knives, I guess Mora is a area over there but I do have a vintage Frost (Mora) Clipper and it's still in great condition, I like it but not so much their sheaths, handles are OK, but I like a full tang, but Mora's are pretty strong for partial tanged knives as I'm sure you know, that's why I posted the other text, if you compared your Mora's to a Stromeng especially in the 5" Leuku tell me what you thought between the two.
paulie 4x Yup, Mora is a Swedish town which used to contained numerous knife-making companies. Mora swallowed them and gave them all one name.
ręka już sprawna? :)
HI SIMON. THE SERRATED KNIFE IS GREAT FOR DESCALING FISH. GOOD VIDEO.
+Lynn West Thanks. I've got to try that.
Simon you have to change that typo in the third sentence in the description if you can, I don't know if that means the same thing in British english but it's a slang word in America that made me laugh very hard when I read it. I think you meant to say "cut myself".
Yeah, it was supposed to read 'cut' :) Thanks. I don't know how that happened since 't' isn't even remotely close to 'm' on the keyboard lol Anyway... I'm glad I made you laugh :)
Have you looked at their homepage?
www.moraofsweden.se/home-1.0.115.2
Construction, Craft & Adventure knifes is most common among bushcrafters.
It' depends what you need it for though.
Outsider I have. I even cited a few sentences about their history in the description. Some people say the orange one is a diving or sailing knife. Nothing I do, but who knows ;)
I appreciate you're watching. See you.
no beard today Simon?
Sadly it came off in the shower that day ;)
Do you speak Polish ? :D
+MrKondzio1021 Oczywiście :)
Jesteś Polakiem czy Amerykaninem :d :p ??
MrKondzio1021 Polakiem. Jeszcze nie byłem w Ameryce :)
Wybacz za źle skonstruowane pytanie :)
MrKondzio1021 Nie ma sprawy :)
That is one beautiful knife. Excellent video you have here. I also made a video on MoraKniv. check it out
Say Heah Simon, The Vintage Mora I have was a Military Issue, I could understand why it's a very strongly made knife the seal on the sheath has the Swiss Crown and there's a big A in the middle of Mora, But y new Mora is my Mora Forest Exclusive #277 which is a beautiful handmade laminated blade with brass hardware and the stick tang goes all the way through. A absolutely great carver and I use it as a neck knife, I made a Trio using the Mora #277 with my Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor Hatchet and either my Wicked Tough Saw or my Bacho Laplander Saw, Usually when I scout my southern part of my state, I take my Rodent Rucki as my Summer Long Knife to clear the brambles. Infact I could leave my Hatchet behind, But I don't baton with this knife so I use y Hatchet to make my kindling and to process my firewood using the Mora #277 as a neck knife. I also made a great Trio with my Mora 2000 and teamed it with my Mora Hatchet and I added my Bacho Laplander I carry the Mora 2000 on person the rest fit into my Haversack including my other C's. A strong functioning lite Trio that brings alot of joy using it.
Oh man, I wish I could see that collection :)
Who knows, One day we could meet with Bozhia, Everything is possible.
Bardszo Dzignkuyiam, I always wanted a Leuku, so when I finally pulled the trigger on the Leuku (even though their Not a set), I bought my Stromeng's as a set, I got the KS 9, KS 5, and the Buhku STAK which is a Puukku but one of the lightest knives I own, the whole set is light, but I don't carry all of them together, I usually carry the KS 9 and the Bhuku together with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw, I know the KS 9 is a 9" blade, but the Saame People carried their Leuku as a 1knife carry, it's not that heavy for a large knife but with practice it's very managable and now I can use it in alot of ways as a 1knife use, and the Bhuku as my neck knife, which is the lightest knife I own and a good one and the handles on it are fancier then the other two. The tang is a full tang and looks like a file's tang thicker towards the blade and thinner towards the pommel, it also has a brass sleeve on the front of a plain birch handle that is getting darker with use, and a brass swell pommel so you can hold on to it better and I think the sleeve actually makes them stronger (I light baton with mine) and also a cap on the tang that's peened and soldered, lately I've been using my KS 5 which remind me of the Mora's I guess similar to the 731 Mora, but in stainless steel (12C27), I use that size as a camp knife although it's sold as a Leuku for children and women and hunting but they warn you it comes with a finger gaurd also so you don't slip with fat and blood on your hands, I don't use it for that and besides I like choking on my knife so I got all without a finger gaurd (some styles come with finger gaurds), I noticed you have alot of Mora's, have you ever have a chance to compare them to a 5" Leuku, I was just wondering because there is a significant price difference, any imput would be gratefully appreciated, Bardzso Dzignkuyiam
paulie 4x :) Thanks. Yes, I have one proper 5" leuku from Wood Jewel. I haven't really used it too much because it's very pretty and I just don't want to mess it up :) I have plenty of work-horse knives and haven't had to put the leuku to work. It's hard to judge by only one blade but it seems very usable. The handle isn't the most ergonomic though. It's a bit too thick for me. But that can be fixed. I just don't want to ruin the knife and haven't really touched it. It's one of those collectable knives I save for special occasions.
Hmmmmmm, I was just wondering if I continue to light baton if that will weaken my Stromeng, so far it's sound, and I'm not getting down on it, it's very light knife and that worries me too. Thanx Simon.
paulie 4x I have one large 5" ahti puukko and it did loosen from batoning. But the thing is, it's made from stainless steel. Now, what's the difference, I hear you ask ;) The difference is, most proper puukkos are selectively heat treated which makes their tangs very soft and tough. Their pins are also easy to flatten at the butt end and they'll stay like this for ever. Stainless is strange. It's equally hard throughout and seems a bit too hard where it's not supposed to. It was very difficult to re-flatten the pin and it still doesn't feel right. I think carbon steel leuku should do much better at batoning.
Good point, Thanx M8
toilet paper roll + duct tape = genius.
It works. I still use it :)
just bought a 164, and wondered how to take it along. I can't find a tutorial on making this. I doubt you're short on video ideas, but you defo should do one. great channel btw. rich no nonsense content. keep up!
Challenge accepted :) Thanks. I just need to fond some time.
